Great ambiance here and located in the heart of downtown. Another Glowbal joint I like! I went twice last week, once for happy hour and once for lunch. They feature $9.95 lunch specials with a different item everyday, so I cannot wait to try it one day. A stellar price given its prime location! Service was quick during lunch which I appreciate given the rushed timeframe. We had a server in training and were told up front; he was great and the trainer was very patient. They have an extensive wine list but I went for the safest choice - white house wine. A great pairing to my salmon, prawn and scallop lunch feature with a splattered sauce presentation. I can't recall the type of salad beneath the seafood, but it was somewhat sour and tangy presumably served with a vinaigrette sauce. For the happy hour, I tried the sangria and had a beer (I believe it was Stella). They also have quite a big happy hour menu which I like. I would strongly recommend the calamari with garlic, serrano chili, cilantro, and buttermilk aioli because it is currently my favourite in Vancouver. We enjoyed it so much we ordered two! Also had the beef carpaccio which exceeded my expectations especially with the wasabi emulsion, pickled mushrooms, garlic chili sauce and green onion croutons. For our final dish, we wanted to experiment something unique to Coast so we opted for the mushroom tempura. It is hard these days to find a fellow friend who loves mushrooms as much as I do. This dish took slightly longer to prepare (but understandable) and had prawn cream cheese stuffed, arugula, onions, spicy rosé. A perfect combination and the portion definitely surprised me, as it was a portobello mushroom cut in half as opposed to small button mushrooms. However I'm not complaining! The food was excellent. We ordered appetizers, and the torched prawn carpaccio was excellent. The oysters as usual so fresh and the quality is great. We had roasted salmon and seabass wellington as main entrees, and both were fantastic. We highly recommend the wellington - it was sublime. The service was great as well. Utterly wonderful local (although a bit heavy on one's wallet). My office chose to dine here post spa and it didnt disappoint. We enjoyed white sangrias, ceasars (virgin and not) and very satisfying brewed coffee. Our group ordered the sable fish, a variety of sushi and the ahi tuna. Based on my previous review which was about a year ago, I wasn't planning to come back but my friend had a birthday dessert from Glowbal group and there was a dessert I wanted to try at Coast so we decided to come here for a small snack a long with it. After much consideration we got the sushi tile for two (approx $40). It was horrible. The fish wasn't fresh at all. I was skeptical about getting sushi at non-japanese place and they confirmed it. The rice used for the rolls were hard. I'm not sure why this place was so full. Maybe it's just filled with tourists. Our server was ok to the point where he cleared our table but didn't bother to ask if we wanted dessert, which was a totally different treatment from what the table next to us got. I didn't bother to order mine and my friend just got hers. It was disappointing as well. Macaron tasted days old. Like I would know 'cause I ate lots of macarons and sometimes I tend to save some for the next day and it tasted better than what we were served. The cake was the only thing that was actually tasty. I gave Coast a 3 star because I actually enjoy their happy hour menu more than their regular menu. I've been to Coast a few times now for casual eats and for a party. I didn't particularly like the meal we had off the regular menu but my happy hour expensive was delightful. The restaurant itself is dimly light and has a very chic vibe to it. It's a nice restaurant don't get me wrong, but it would the one of my first choices for eats or for occasions. Off the happy hour menu, we ordered oysters, salmon flatbread, spicy salmon and albacore tuna rolls. All of which were delicious and enjoyable to eat. In my opinion, Coast is a great place to sit down with some company for drinks and light eats but if you're looking for a great meal, there are better spots in town. read more

From an intimate dinner for 2 to a work party of 200, in a private room, to socializing at the bar, there is an option for everyone! This award winning restaurant has amazing wait staff, talented chefs, beautiful decor and a mouthwatering menu. My most recent visit was this past week to try their new featured items. From the drinks to the dessert, everything was delicious! We had a chance to try their Fish & Chip cones, I'm a huge fan of sushi type cones so these were right up my alley, made with tempura code and Japanese tartar sauce. Then we had some chilli garlic prawns.... oooo so good, I love prawns so these glazed wok-fried massive prawns were delicious! Then we had some interesting Polenta fries there were served as an Italian style poutine. If your a fan of lasagna and sausage then you'll love them! Followed by that delectable lamb shank, it was melt in your mouth and served with some mint, onion and tomato quinoa. My favourite, the dish to gush over was the Lobster pot pie, it was the most delicious lobster, massive, and served on a broken down pot pie mixture of carrots, potatoes, peas, a buttery cream sauce and a soft puff pastry. Lastly we had the coconut banana butter cake. Can I just say... this was amazing! Hands down a new fav dessert is Vancouver, no wonder it's been on the menu for 11 years straight! We also had a chance to try some amazing cocktails including the Alberni spritzer that was perfectly and refreshing for a hot summer day, love the St Germaine flavours that pop thru. The Sunset Beach was a delicious tropical choice with pineapple juice and Oakheart rum in a fancy coupe glass. The Vancouverite which was a play on a Chambers & gin sour, mmmm a fav for sure. Also the Thyme & Figs, loved this short glass with a mini Fentiman's tonic, pimms and fig syrup was the perfect touch! My family and I were visiting Vancouver for the weekend and were looking for some seafood/sushi dinner spots. We were greeted with such great service right when we walked in the door at COAST. Laura was our server and she was absolutely wonderful; suggested the best food choices (including things not on the menu) had such a good attitude and energy, and accommodated all our requests (including making sure all sushi and soy sauce was gluten free for our food allergies). The sushi rolls were so good we ended up getting more. The cocktails were delicious and took no time to deliver to the table. We were recently in downtown Vancouver on our way to a concert and, of course, I Yelped for "happy hours" and this place turned up. I've never even heard of it, but according to the reviews it was a must-try. So we found a parking spot (metered - and not cheap - but hey, it's downtown YVR!) and arrived at Coast just after their 2:30pm HH had begun. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, who offered us a tempting taste of their smoked salmon focaccia while we waited. We nibbled this delicious bite while finding a couple of seats at their beautiful circular bar, and were greeted by a very friendly bartender who gave us some water, took our drink orders (they have pint, wine, and cocktail specials!) while we perused the happy hour menu. We opted for the much-recommended calamari (which was divine and came with a spicy sauce) and a half dozen of their $1.50 oyster-of-the-day (a local beauty which was super fresh and served with house-made cocktail sauce, a tart mignonette, and a heap of freshly grated horseradish). By the way, just watching the dude shuck oysters was like live entertainment - he shucked 6 of those puppies in the time it would take me to jam my shucking knife into a single oyster! Coast is the type of hip sophisticated seafood restaurant that I wish that we had here in Hawaii. Living in Hawaii, we are blessed with an abundance of fresh seafood year round. However, one thing that we are a bit lacking of which I wanted to eat before I left Vancouver were fresh oysters. Thanks to my foodie friend Diane, she suggested that I check out the daily "Buck a Shuck" oyster happy hour at Coast. Available daily from 3-5 P.M., this $1/oyster special is worth 5-Stars alone in my opinion! At only $1 per oyster, my only dilemma was deciding how many oysters to order. Not wanting to be a total glutton, I settled on a dozen local oysters which normally would have set me back $33. On my weekday visit, the majority of the oysters that I ate were from Read Island in Heriot Bay with a few Royal Miyagis from the Cortes Islands thrown in to complete my delicious dozen. The Read Island oysters had a mild, fresh flavor with a touch of sweetness at the end. The Royal Miyagis were still delicious, but a bit milder in flavor. Needless to say, I was in oyster heaven and quite content. I would have been satisfied with just the fresh oysters, but the other reason that I came to Coast was to eat the B.C. Spot Prawns that were still in season in British Columbia. Since they are not a regular menu item, I was delighted to find out from my server that they still had some available. As I had just had some raw at another restaurant the night before, I decided to order the B.C. Spot Prawns steamed the classic style with chardonnay white wine, garlic, leeks, and italian parsley. Served with frites on the side, I was on a seafood high and immensely enjoyed the sweet prawn meat & flavorful juices from sucking the head. 12 must have been my lucky number since that is how many B.C. Raw bar located at the bar (see my pic) ensures a very short food commute, so you're getting your tasties on as fast as your drinkies on! Super friendly service, good-looking crowd (patrons and employees), right in the heart of a lively 'hood. Kind of reminds me of a River North (Chicago) trendy place wrt vibe and atmosphere. Sat at the bar, as I was dining solo, and had a great dinner of a mango-Cali roll (a house specialty) and 1/2 dzn oysters. Minus 1 star b/c there were no TVs at the bar (pretty minor issue but good if you're a solo diner like I was), and a huge price tag. My meal, with just 1 glass of wine, set me back over $50. So TORN! We went to Coast on Thursday and we had the best waiter ever, I mean the best! He sent us over a complimentary amuse-bouche and also recommended one of the best items we had in Vancouver, the crab cakes. My clams were good, just what I wanted but not stellar. Seriously, we talked this guy up after we left. I think his name was Sean, I'll check the card and get back to everyone. Actually it was Aaron Hutchinson. Ask for him when you make a reservation. On the other hand I stopped in on Monday and told the bartender I was here for oysters and wine. The have a $1 oyster happy hour from 3-5pm, I showed up at 3:20pm. Clearly, I am here for the oyster happy hour. However, because I didn't say, I'd like the happy hour oysters he gave me the full price oysters. What I thought was going to be a $20 meal turned into a $40+ meal and I was pissed!!! Honestly I wouldn't go back because of that stunt. Bad form, bad form. read more

Regrettably, Michael, our server was totally disinterested and thus we had a poor evening, worthy of giving only 2 stars for the restaurant. However, the manager made up one star by comping both of us our main entree, thus I'm awarding 3 stars. We sat upstairs, looking over the main dining room and bar below. It actually was a wonderful table. However, our waiter had an attitude, thinking he was god's gift to the customer, and as a result, came to see us when he deigned it appropriate, which was between never and seldom. The featured oyster sampler was very good. The main fish entrees, when we got them, was also tasty. The wine was overflowing based on our ordering it, as we had no food, so we had to do something.Salads were fine. This review is for their brunch, which is served on weekends. I've had their brunch before and thought it was great; they feature egg bennys with tater tots and salad for $10! I was really looking forward to coming here again for the great food, and it's nice to have a good brunch place where you don't have to wait 45 minutes for a table and that actually takes resos. Although we were able to be seated right away at 11AM they do get busy close to noontime so call ahead just in case. However this experience was a bit disappointing. We ordered a clam chowder, 6 feature oysters (buck-a-shuck), a classic breakfast and a peameal bacon eggs benny. Firstly, the food took a long time to come out. It took almost twenty minutes for our bowl of clam chowder and oysters to arrive. Then another twenty minutes before our mains arrived. (The two tables beside us that had ordered after us had finished their mains by then). The clam chowder was great like at my previous visits; it was flavourful and a big enough portion for two to share. The feature oysters were fresh too albeit a bit small. However my main was disappointing. They served under seasoned, soggy potato wedges instead of the great tater tots that I had months ago (I included an old photo). In the menu, "spiced tater tots" are still in the dish description so I feel like the restaurant should let the customers know about any substitutions. Another issue was with the hollandaise sauce; last time it was perfect but this time it was sour and had a strong vinegar taste. It also didn't help that the bowls given to us were dirty (see photos). I was really disappointed by this visit. I would've given 4 stars for my previous visits due to the great food and value but today was a let down. read more

I had a random oyster craving today, so spontaneously stopped in for the buck a shuck happy hour at Coast. Sat on the patio, which was lovely but filled with a mixture of businessmen and tourists. The white linens and service came off as a bit unauthentic and "try hard" - on an ordinary day it would not really be my scene, but ambiance was not what I was seeking on this occasion. Ordered a plate full of buck-a-shucks and a crab poutine to share, some sort of berry-gin cocktail (date had the caesar), and berry cheesecake for dessert. Not going to lie, the buck-a-shucks were pretty disappointing. They were like the tiniest most miniscule little oysters I had ever eaten. The horse radish that accompanied them was bland - not hot at all. Considering this is what I came for I was not impressed! On the plus side, the crab poutine was very good - it was covered in crab, cheese curds, bacon, and a creamy sauce - the perfect snack to share. Drinks were tasty - my date's caesar looked amazing (it was topped with scallops and bacon!) and I'm told it tasted even better than it looked. My gin berry cocktail was tasty, albeit weak for $11. Berry cheesecake was absolutely delicious. Best part of the meal was when we paid the bill and the waitress informed us that our poutine and dessert was 25% off because they were having a customer appreciation week. Score! Total for two before tax and tip was $55, not bad at all. While the rest of the meal made up for the sad little oysters (I guess you get what you pay for), I didn't really enjoy the ambiance so I probably won't be back. read more

Love the ambiance of Coast, from the moment you walk in you're greeted by high ceilings and tasteful decor. The service every time I've been here is absolutely wonderful, you train your staff well! The mussels were some of the best I've had, and that banana bread is out of this world good! However, my sablefish wasn't the best I've had - had a very overtly fishy taste which I don't usually have when I order sablefish elsewhere. Could have just been an off day for it though! All in all, I love coast and it's my go to for downtown seafood. read more

They have a fantastic bar- In fact, I wouldn't sit in the restaurant, I would choose the bar seating every time. Problem is that the quality seems to be sliding. If you see the pictures of Ceasar's from a long time ago you can see the prawns they used before were massive and the ones they use now are tiny. : ( I've also been here for buck a shuck - they rotate oysters on offer- but both times I just felt the quality of the oysters were lacking, they used very small oysters both times and given that I've been to a lot of other places to compare.. I came here during Happy Hour with a couple girl friends after checking out the Abbotsford Tulip Festival before they ended this year. Coast is one of Glowbal's restaurants and I knew I had to check it out during my visit to Vancouver! Coast is a great brunch spot with amazing happy hour and lunch specials. The servers were exceptionally nice and service was absolutely amazing. What we ordered: Drinks: -White sangria (absolutely delicious! I've always been a huge fan of sangrias and this definitely made it on the top of my list) -Lemon Drop Martini -Cosmopolitan Martini Appetizers: -Buck-A-Shuck Feature Oyster (served on half-shell w/ cocktail sauce & fresh horseradish): their oysters here were so fresh and absolutely to die for. -Crispy Calamari (scallions, garlic, serrano peppers, garlic yogurt) -Crab Dip (dungeness crab, red pepper, parmesan cheese, garlic toast): we all ended up dipping the calamari with this crab dip because it seriously complimented anything and everything! -Cup of New England Chowder (clams, smoked bacon, roasted vegetables) -Signature Brussel Sprouts (parmesan cheese, capers, lemon juice) -Miso Glazed Sablefish (seaweed salad) -Sushi Chef's Feature (toro maki -- it was tuna roll) I had an amazing time here at Coast and will definitely be checking out other Glowbal owned restaurants! read more

She was more than impressed and extremely happy with everything she tasted. Even though everything was delightful, including the service, the dessert special was the highlight. It was a freshly baked coconut banana cake served with a drizzling of caramel and a dusting of icing sugar; it's topped with fresh berries. Disappointed..... After the concierge at the Upscale hotel we were stayin at recommended them (and the lunch he recommended was GREAT!), we thought we would give them a try..... He said they had the 'vibe' and it was fusion..... We were seated promptly and service was 'ok'. Food was expensive and being from the desert we decided to try the seafood platter which the waiter recommended and said was all REALLY Fresh seafood. Turns out that does not matter if it is not prepared well. Had to send the salmon back as it was overcooked and at almost $40 a person it was more appetizer size than a meal. Then to top it off, we were charged $12 for a house wine that was $7 on the menu. If we had seen the concierge, we would have told him to STOP recommending them! read more

After a day's worth of wandering downtown, Doro and I headed to Glowbal Group's Coast Restaurant for dinner since I wanted chowder. It was actually my first time there for a meal. The new england chowder ($9) was not bad. I enjoyed the addition of bacon and the two mussels, but I couldn't find a single manila clam, which was listed on the menu. There were, however, some chewy tasteless bits that seemed to be similar to surf clams. Although it was chocked full of vegetables (namely carrots), I wish the overall viscosity was a bit thicker and richer. When we sat down, I noticed the table next to us were picking at a steamer with mysterious crunchy bits in them. Not knowing that was actually the calamari ($9), we had ordered it as well. Darn. Upon first glance it seemed okay, but the pieces of squid were quite tough. Dorothy had had this here before, but she noted she had positive experiences every time before since the bits of squid were rings rather than slices. After two pieces, the batter was falling apart every where and the squid and batter separated. We sent it back to the kitchen, and we were pleased they were pretty good about it. Since I was actually pretty full, I didn't really want any carbs and didn't feel like I could appreciate a large piece of fish. Instead, I opted for the mussels done "classic style" ($19). The mussels were huge and really quite juicy. They were also quite rich with chardonnay, which I really liked. They were good and probably even better than my favourite ones from Seasons. The fries were nothing special, but some of them were quite salty. The waiter recommended the sablefish ($36), stating it was really buttery -- which naturally makes sense due to it's high omega-3 content. Although I usually find sablefish to be a treat, I felt this piece of fish to be unexciting. The meat itself was not that smooth, with the "fibres" of the fish quite discernible upon chewing. I did like the sauce though. Dorothy agreed that it was not too buttery, but she noted it tasted better as she finished the fish. Came here with a few girlfriends for their Dine Out Vancouver menu and was so excited to be able to try this restaurant... and then so disappointed. I guess when you order off the Dine Out menu you automatically become a "less than" customer at many establishments because your bill won't be as high as some other tables - however, if you don't want people to order off the Dine Out menu why don't you just not offer it? Also, we didn't come here looking to be pampered - but the basics would have been nice. Anyways, disappointed as the service was terribly slow - we had to ask multiple times for the server to come take our order, bring our bill, take our payment... with as many staff as they had we shouldn't have had to ask to be served. Tips to the bussers though - they kept us well hydrated and our table impeccable! Other than that, the food was meh (especially considering the price). Probably would have enjoyed my entree more if it had been served hot (I assume our entrees waited for service for too long so they were cold, all 3 of them). Definitely not worth the $$$ spent or the $$$$$ they charge normally - you can find much better food and service elsewhere for a fraction of the cost. Warning: The Macaroni and Cheese can be tempting, but it's better as a side dish to share. Don't make it your main entree unless you're really into Mac and Cheese. The restaurant was very busy and I understand it's not easy getting a reservation, so get to it and call now. They had key lime pie the night we went; being from Florida it happens to be my favorite. Went with a few friends for their happy hour menu. We grabbed their cocktail special, which was a mixture of champagne and strawberry syrup (it was really good). The ambience was definitely high class and we ended up sitting in their small patio since it was such a nice day. For the food, I got the crab cake and shared the calamari with a friend. Others also got the mango California roll and a flatbread. I was very disappointed with my crab cake - the crab meat was there but I did not like the flavour. Even though it is 50% off for happy hour, I still don't think 10$ is worth it... The mango California roll was very average; it was not bad but not particularly good either. There is real crab meat in there though. The highlight for me was the calamari, which was fried nicely and tasted great. However the flavouring seemed quite Asian and I think I can find something similar at a Chinese restaurant instead. I never tried the flatbread but it seemed like a good deal if you want to be filled up quickly. The service was good in the beginning, but the waiter charged us full price for happy hour dishes and did not bother to check even when someone at our table asked about the pricing. We had to go back after we paid to get the manager to give our money back - which would have been around $60 taken away from us if we didn't read it correctly! read more

Came here for a work dinner with 8 people and everything was so amazing. It was my first time trying oysters and I have to say, I am a fan! They were SO fresh and delicious, I find myself craving them again. I had a hard time deciding what to get, everything looked good but I finally settled on the scallops with pork belly and I was very satisfied with my choice. The scallops were huge and plentiful and the pork belly was crispy yet tender. We also had an array of sides including mashed potatoes, fried mushrooms, tuna poke, brussel sprouts and the chili garlic prawns. These prawns were my favourite thing we had that night, by far. So so good, with a little bit of a kick. Coast was recommended by the concierge in my hotel. This is a well-known local seafood place, however, I think it's a bit overrated. The seafood was fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. We weren't impressed. We were seated to a table with lots of traffic despite the fact that we made reservation ahead of time. The restaurant was really noisy, which was hard to talk in. Another annoyance was the waiter was bit like a salesman at a cheesy car dealership. He was eager to "sell" us certain cocktail and entrees before we even took a look at the menu. But I had to admit the crab cakes there were pretty good, the crab flavor and texture had the perfect balance. Other things we ordered such as the mussels, salmon and oysters were okay, but not impressive. IMO, Coast is "known" because of the hype of fame and its modern ambience in a seafood restaurant within the downtown area, the food there isn't really that good, we certainly had much better seafood else where in Vancouver. read more

Great customer service and really good food. I especially loved the entrance with the flames and heaters - perfect for a cold night. My fish was amazing - I highly recommend the sablefish. This was my first time trying it and I'm disappointed that I won't be able to have it again anytime soon. read more

This was our first stop in Vancouver and we decided to go because it was so close to our hotel. It was really busy so we had to wait a bit for seating, but eventually, we were able to get bar seats within 10 minutes. We went for happy hour and were impressed by the amount of choices available. Everything was pretty affordable and the food tasted great! Would recommend for happy hour - it was super filling and affordable. read more

Went to grab a quick lunch with a buddy after school yesterday, we ordered their Sushi Time for 2 for $40 -with an add on of Mango Cali roll -i love how fresh their sushi tasted, it's also been a while since we had Cali rolls with actual crab meat and not imitation crab PS I ordered a negroni and I gotta say they make a darn smooth negroni, if you're a fine fan try ordering it! read more

Love that more restaurants in vancouver are getting into happy hour! The global group is offering 50% off appys with some drink specials for $5 which is awesome deal. We ordered the buck a shuck oysters, lobster pouting and baked truffle Brie flatbread.. Normally would have a 4th dish but we were way too full. I love the lobster pontine, a little skimpy on lobster but still loaded with cheese and bacon for bacon lovers. Also love that they allow you to make reso for happy hour!
