We selected the Strawberry-Rhubarb pie and apple, blueberry, raspberry and lemon turnovers. Pie crust was light and flaky and packed full of fruit. Pie stayed together nicely when sliced and served. Fruit was natural and not overly sweetened. Pie would have been perfect with just a touch of lime zest/juice and maybe a spoonful more of sugar. The turnovers were tasty. The apple ones were pouches with a half apple in each. We've never seen one prepared like that. Prices were very reasonable in this small farmstand store. The woman behind the counter was kind and happy to help us. I was so excited when she handed the pie over and it was still warm!

I was able to sample their apple cider and it was very good. I meant to purchase a gallon of that as well but forgot. It was tasty and flavorful without being too sweet. We made pumpkin seeds from the pumpkins last night and they were very good. Even though the pumpkins weren't that large, they had lots of seeds! We also had some apples and they were crisp and juicy. I made the pie as well. The gentleman told us that the pie came cooked and ready to eat, but the crust was a little white for us and we prefer warm pie anyway, so I put it in the oven for about 20 minutes and served it up. The pie and the crust were both good and I definitely would have given browns five stars, had I not literally almost choked on a piece of plastic in my pie. (See photo) It got caught in the back of my throat and I had to pull it out with my finger. I was unable to finish my piece because of that experience, but no one else had any issue and everyone enjoyed the pie. I understand accidents happen but it was unfortunate. I would still return for for fruits and vegetables and maybe to get that cider I forgot, but I probably wouldn't buy another pie from them.

I couldn't believe it but I haven't been in the habit of stopping in Hancock. This CS though will be in my circulation :)! It's one of my favorite finds this season! Hubbard's I think appeals to visitors as well as locals bc they do have a bit of everything and a deli with super reasonable prices! It's a great place to pick up CofFeE, snacks, sandwiches, pizza, bevies, mementos, gifts etc., to your hikes or to wherever. Sara is very personable and helpful! It's conveniently located on SR125 where SR100 & SR125 meet, across from the tiny hotel restaurant. Hubbard's will soon be offering gas as well. That'll be nice to have gas on both ends of the Middlebury Gap. There are several parking spots in front of the store. Enjoy!

In Vermont corn is practically a cult. Each variety has a name -- silver queen, montauk, providence, honey select -- with a distinctive taste and look, each savored by afficionados. Everyone has their own perfect way of cooking it, which all vary by several seconds but basically follow the recipe above. There are treatises on how to store it after picking: shade, sun, room temperature, refrigerated - unwrapped or wrapped in paper or plastic? OMG... Freshness is everything. Never buy corn that wasn't picked the day you buy it. There are dozens of studies and theories as to how much sugar (ie, flavor)is lost overnight, with the consensus being about 50%. Which is irrelevant since CORN IS ALWAYS EATEN THE DAY IT IS PICKED. NO EXCEPTIONS! Day-old corn is no longer considered corn because IT HAS NO TASTE. In central Vermont, in the Lake Dunmore region near Middlebury, even though everyone and their brother sells corn, there is only one grower who consistently has perfect corn every time: Wayne Kingsley on Route 53, just north of the junction with Route 73 in Forest Dale. What sets Wayne apart is that he loves the food he grows and sells. He farms like a craftsman, using just the right fertilizer, just the right plot, planting on just the right days to sequence the different varieties so that every 3 or 4 days another type comes in, so you are always getting to taste different ones. His Providence corn had so much flavor that it made my mouth hurt. He also grows tomatoes, cukes, squash, beets, beans, all the rest, and his chosen blueberry supplier is also the best. As are his peaches. I have learned about the orgasmic joy of the natural taste of perfectly grown food from Kingsley's Farm Stand. Long may it reign. Who needs friends when there's corn?

This was going to be a very good trip. Obviously this place is a winery, but they have decided to get into beer too. I think the woman told us that they are still pretty new to brewing, but there is nothing wrong with that. They aren't even on the VT beer map. That just makes coming here that much more enjoyable. It is like you are getting in on the ground floor of a stock that you know will make you a ton of money. The setting here seemed very genteel to me. I think there might have been some doilies. If not, there should have been. They have a tasting. You can do wine, or you can do beer. Or maybe you can do both. We did beer. A few they had to taste were a Ginger Wheat (bought a growler of that), an IPA and a Double IPA. For a pretty new brewery they were all very good.
