We came here for breakfast this past Sunday and ordered a couple items- beef omelette and the cactus w/ eggs. We also got the $4 margarita wine (a bit on the sweet side) and my bf got the Michelada. Café Leon is one of my favorite childhood nostalgia restaurants growing up in Fresno. While they don't serve your typical "authentic" Mexican food, it is delicious, and very characteristic of Mexican-American cuisine and culture. I always go for the red cheese enchiladas (a great veggie option) in a combo plate, with sour cream on the side. The sauce is a little thicker than your run of the mill enchilada sauce, but delicious nonetheless. I like to go for breakfast and order the potatoes extra crispy. I had never been to Cafe Leon before. I didn't know what to expect, but I love Mexican food, so I gave it a try. Sure glad I did. Our waitress, Rosa, was the sweetest, nicest person. She also had a talent that is rare in wait staff. She didn't hover over us, but she was always there when we needed her. She really knows how to read the room. The food was also really really good. Although there were some things I liked about this place, it wasn't too noisy, no loud music, had good elbow room and decent service, my review is based on the food (the taste and the quality). With places like Las Mañanitas being off-the-charts fantastic, this cafe lives just above the other end of the spectrum. Pricing is great but I'd have been happy to pay more for better tasting food. I liked that everything did NOT have too much sodium, but... The food is like they were tasked with the following specifications: 1) Make Mexican food without much flavor. 2) Make it centenarian friendly... 3) Make the chili verde sauce like water.. 4) Don't use spices and treat them like they are rare, EXPENSIVE, elusive and must be missing... 5) Make it like Melba Toast. The chili verde/chili Colorado combo plate..., on a 1 to 10 scale was a three. It was not a good version and tasteless. There were no veggies or onion, NO heft to any of the sauces. Each bite disappoints. IF you were doing a blind taste test, you'd be hard pressed to name either. Yes, the meat was lean (perhaps too). Yes, the meat was soft, but come on... NO real flavor! Should be the opposite, one bite HOOKS you and MAKES you want to go every couple days.... Dreaming for a close place that does... I doubled the refried beans and skipped the rice. The beans were yum but the smallest part of the meal. Rats! I also ordered a chicken taco and a carne asada taco al carte. Similar experience with tastes... BORING! I ate the full chicken taco, but just ate the meat and not the tort on the asada. It was just semi hard oil dipped tortillas. I would not order either again... The one flour tortilla I ordered with the meal WAS delicious, HOT, nicely cooked! Perhaps I'll return for just that... :( No t-chips accompanied the meal. My guess is that the meats are NOT cooked in the sauces. They don't look like it or taste like it. Rather they are simply boiled/simmered in water then their tasteless sauces are added to the plate or withheld for something like a chicken taco. Okay, makes production easier but wow, kills the meal... There's nothing special here. Sure it's food and fills the stomach but it's not the kind of special feeling/excitement I would associate with eating out. I would never 'treat' a friend or family member here, either. This is one of the worst restaurants I've eaten at in Fresno, and I've eaten in dozens over the years. I ordered the Chili Verde and Chili Colorado combo plate. The verde sauce was thin, runny and had no flavor. The pork was overcooked, dry and difficult to chew. The chili Colorado sauce had the consistency of and tasted like beef gravy out of a jar. It was disgustingly awful. The beef was overcooked and hard as leather. I gave up trying to chew it. And they charge for chips and salsa. Tsk, tsk. The service was good though. read more

I have been here a few times years ago for lunch and remember it being good. For breakfast, it depends on what you order. My son got the chiliquias and thought they were tasty and well seasoned. My carne asada omelette had eggs wrapped around some meat with some cheese on it. Absolutely boring. My omelette would get a two stars but my son thought his chiliquias was worth four stars. We both agreed the potatoes were nothing. They basically throw some potatoes into a fryer and plop them on the plate. The service though was great. The ambiance of the place is fine. Nothing crazy. I came here on a weekday morning with a group of friends. Our service was fantastic, coffee refills before I realized I might even need one, no problem making adaptations to meals, and just a nostalgic diner feel. I got the chiliquiles without egg or cheese, and added veggies & guacamole. My coffee was so great... perfect diner coffee. Today we had lunch at the Cafe Leon Mexican Restaurant near Blackstone and Gettysburg. Their menu has a variety of different choices to pick from. You can choose small, medium or large meals. We chose a combination meal with a Chile Relleno and an Enchilada. It was served with rice, and refried beans. Our meal was covered with cheese. I personally do not like refried beans. The chile relleno was very small. I asked for a chicken enchilada. I was disappointed with the sauce. I'm not sure how the enchilada sauce was made. It needed more powdered California or the spicy New Mexican chile, garlic and chicken stock to give it more flavor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On a positive note, the ambience was relaxing and pleasant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waitress was outstanding, friendly and attentive. The restaurant has safe and clean. Workers are masked. There's a lot to look at! Artwork and pictures! It has two sides to eat at. One right when you walk in and one off to the left...another room. The order was ready and the worker was kind. Wished well too! The next day! I got everything ready per usual. Split the burrito. My half was delicious! Especially with the hot sauce! Since my last review, over four years ago, all I can say, is, keep up the fantastic work! This place is totally awesome. My choice, is always a #7, a Shredded Beef Taco, and Enchilada, with a very tasty bean and cheese burrito. The spicy sauce, the waitress leaves at the table, is absolutely delicious. Prices are actually cheaper than Taco Bell, or Del Taco! I eat here, 2-3 days a month, on Tuesdays. All I can say, is get here well before noon, because it gets very busy, and for good reason. This is the best Mexican food in Fresno, and there's no close second! At other Mexican Restaurants, I almost always order all beans, and no rice, with my combo, because Spanish Rice, is usually tasteless at other places. But not at Café Leon! Sometimes, I'm tempted to get all rice, but I love refried beans way too much to go that far. There's only two things that would make this wonderful place even better. If they served Pepsi products instead of Coca-Cola, but they DO have a great Iced Tea, with 8-10 Sweet and Lows in it. The second thing, is if they delivered, on Door Dash, Grubhub, or wherever. Currently, there's no delivery, which I don't understand. I'd eat here, 3 days or nights per week, if they delivered. Also, two thumbs up for using, exclusively, yellow cheese. Any place that only uses the boring, tasteless, white cheese, is not a place I would eat at. Cheddar is just better! All I ask, is to start delivering, guys. Uber Eats, Door Dash, Grubhub. Went to Cafe Leon on 2-22-25 around 9am and the place was packed. No wonder! there food and service is excellent. The food was served fresh and hot and the taste was spot on. We were greeted and sat down as we walked in, got our drinks and menu and in about 10 mins our food came. Definitely will go back. read more

Hidden gem right in plain sight! Customer service was excellent the AC worked good for being one of the hottest days. We had n checking out all the lion decor around the restaurant it added fun conversation to our dining. My husband ordered the omelette,my son got the burrito,and I got the chili Verde and eggs we were all pleased with the food. We normally go to country fare but it was closed this day so we remembered we were told these two restaurants were related somehow so we took a chance getting the same quality of food and they didn't disappoint! My husband and I have been loyal customers to Cafe Leon for many many years. The menu is extensive, the staff is warm, friendly and attentive. Although we tend to order "our usual" we have enjoyed almost every item on the menu and have never been disappointed. Saul has purchased the Cafe and is intent on maintaining the cooks, staff, menu and the affordable prices. We along with our friends are delighted the hours have been extended and we can once again enjoy dinner as well as breakfast and lunch. Saul can accomodate large parties as well as a party for two. Honestly, this place was my least favorite Mexican restaurant ever. The young girl working there was so friendly and a nice server. However, the restaurant is dirty. Our table was dirty and we have kids so I had wipes to clean it. No biggie. But the food was bland you must pay for chips to go with your salsa. Again, no biggie, but the ambience is just sad. No one eating in the restaurant seems happy, no one working in the restaurant seems happy. The food had no flavor except for the chilaquiles picantes. Which is just spicy hot not super flavorful. It was an experience but I will be taking my business elsewhere Castillos, Carillos, or Casa Corona all stellar Mexican food. This place makes you feel uncomfortable the owner or cashier is yelling at everyone. Even rude to other customers. I should rate it one star but we did get served quickly which also makes me question the freshness of the food. Oh well we will not return. Flys everywhere dead and alive. Eww. read more

So our family has patronized this restaurant for nearly 25 years. My Uncle would go here in the late '90s after work from Sears. Since last year (after the owners retired), the quality of meat has changed as well as taste and service. Maria is always alone and moves consistently however, I feel you always have to tell her several times your order and she still gets it wrong. We have spent a lot of money here and yet theres really no hook anymore to have a customer return. It seems the owner, cook, and waitress simply don't care. What is FRUSTRATING is you have to beg for salsa, and half the time if you ask for anything she charges for it. If Im charged, I better get adequate amount for what I paid for! They have cut corners, always mess up take out- and believe me- we spend A LOT HERE. You NEVER get chips and salsa, the food has been cut down and prices have increased. One would think if you eat in you would get better service and quality of food but NOPE. Shredded beef is flavorless (and they used to be REALLY TASTY). A customer should NEVER feel as if you must "Beg" for salsa to go with your food- but it is truly an uncomfortable situation. When the guy waiter ( Saul) is there, he is friendly and warm , brings chips/salsa and makes sure customers are ok. With her, never. Again, you feel like a beggar "asking" for everything when it is customary that a waiter would know and have concern to help, but the only concern is charging extra for everything including lack of customer service skills. There are SO many Mexican restaurants that it is ridiculous to always be disappointed coming here yet we have given the opportunity to better the situation being customers for so long, yet each time we encounter issues. I feel they should fire everyone but Saul & start over with new crew including a cook and food supply chain... or perhaps get ahold of the old retired crew for advice and notes- read more

We just ate here and I wish I could give a decent review. My brother loved this place and that's why we came today. My plate had so much water in it. I'm thinking the relleno was frozen and when heated, the water was released. My enchiladas were lacking flavor. The sauce they used fell off the enchilada. So totally flavorless. Lots of cheese though. The relleno was lukewarm. The chips lacked any rich flavor. I'm sure they have delivered great meals, because it's a favorite for many I'm sure read more
