    Coco and the Director, Charlotte
    Bruce K.

Coco and the Director is tucked into the lobby of the Charlotte Marriott City Center, but absolutely don't let that be a reason to pass it by. This is a proper coffee shop, not a hotel afterthought. It offers a full spectrum of coffees from classic drip to espresso drinks with flair longside fresh-baked pastries, sandwiches, and grab-and-go snacks that feel curated rather than generic. The space itself is a pleasant surprise: warm wood tones, industrial lighting, and a mezzanine-style loft that invites lingering. There's a communal table for laptop warriors, cozy nooks for quiet chats, and even a small stage that occasionally hosts local performers or spoken word events. It's a place that feels like it belongs to the city, not just its visitors. Service is friendly and efficient, with baristas who know their beans and if it's not too busy, don't mind chatting about roast profiles or local sourcing. The vibe is relaxed but purposeful. This morning, it was ideal for some folks to have a morning meet-up at some tables. I had a comfy seat in the mezzanine area with my laptop to warm up with a drip coffee and watch the goings on. Whether you're staying at the hotel or just wandering around Uptown, Coco and the Director earns its place. [Review 1427 of 2025 - 4498 in North Carolina - 24978 overall]

My friends and I came to work. The space is big, tons of space to sit to work, study, or hang out. It was quiet. The area was clean and so was the bathroom. It was difficult for my laptop to connect to the while at the Marriot but eventually it connected. I didn't have a ton of communication with staff except when ordering my cafe. She was nice. I had a latte. It was good!

This space is amazing! It's large and well decorated and very open. It's also a market and a coffee shop. I grabbed a latte and a dark chocolate bar and both were quite delicious. Great hang out or work space. Very comfortable. Casual. Good service. Please come and create your own adventure.

The best cronut I've found in Charlotte. It's not as good as Five Daughters (Nashville/Atlanta), but it's almost on par. If you've never had one def make sure to try it out, especially one with buttercream.

I was on vacation in Charlotte and in need of a latte, and am so glad I came across Coco and the Director! The shop is attached to a hotel, but you'd never know it from the decor and the vibe. This is no boring corporate coffee shop! The employees were very friendly and helpful, and the space is big and bright and has plenty of seating across two levels. There are tables of various sizes, as well as a large stadium seating area with comfy pillows. There were several interesting drink flavors on the specials board, and it was hard to pick just one! It was also hard to pick a pastry, as everything in the bakery case looked delicious. I decided on the Love on Top Cold Brew and a Pistachio Cronut. Both were delicious! The cold brew was smooth and flavorful with a creamy cold foam and fun heart candies on top. The Cronut was flaky and fresh with a yummy pistachio cream. I wish I'd had time to make a return visit or two before I headed home. The next time I'm in town I'll definitely be back for another latte and cronut!

Came in here to grab a good cup of coffee and get some work done. The coffee is good (a bit pricey at $8). The place has a ton of seating and even a second floor (loft style). It is a bit dark however which is not ideal for getting work done.

This is a quaint little coffee shop in the heart of uptown Charlotte. Very convenient if you're working at or close to one of the banking centers. Staff could've been a little friendlier, especially when it's not as busy... But at the same time, I can't blame them for being more robotic than other coffee shops as the business gentleman in front of me was complaining about a plethora of things, and he hadn't even gotten his items yet. I am sure they deal with a good chunk of banking business people who think they are better than everyone and expect absolutely no flaws. Chai Latte was delicious and did the job! Service was quick and was super convenient for where I was. Also lots of space if you're meeting someone or needing to work remote. If you're in the uptown area, check it out!

A new coffee must try in uptown Absolutely love the vibe here. I like the concept of the sitting pillows as it gives a comfortable and cozy vibe whether you're stopping in for a coffee or looking for a place to work. They had a nice variety of fall flavors - my co worker got a snickerdoodle latte with oat milk (left) and I got a cookie butter cold brew (right) with almond milk.

Cool spot! They don't accept cash, and the heat was blasting so make sure to wear layers or bring a mini fan like I did. Iced latte is delicious and the atmosphere is cool and comfortable, lots of options for seating. Good customer service!

This place is such a vibe!! The vibe and different seating options make this a unique coffee shop that stands out amongst most in Charlotte. Coco & the Director has plenty of drink options (smoothies, celcius, coffee, beer, etc.) and food, which is hard to come by at coffee shops. The service was 10/10 and I got an iced caramel latte which was very good. Looking forward to trying some food next time I come in! my only complaint is is the parking - but I know that's not the business fault just more so uptown!

Wow, what cool space! Such a great spot to work or meet a friend for a drink. They even had a table with TVs in the back perhaps to watch a game. I found this place on Yelp! I always order an iced Americano with a pump of chocolate. My drink was delicious. I will always try a cronut where I can find one and they had a key lime pie cronut. I noticed they make food to order and there was a grill in the cook was preparing pancakes. I also purchased a bag of North Carolina potato chips and popcorn that looked interesting. They have a refrigerator section with cold drinks and yogurt and fruit for sale too. I did not go to the bathroom, but I believe this is at the bottom of the Marriott. So maybe the bathrooms are in the hotel. But I love the pillows with types of seats. I would definitely recommend this cool vibe coffee shop.

This is such a cute coffee shop. While home for a week I found myself patronizing the same coffee shop. As such, my sister suggested I try another one. We stopped in after having lunch downtown. I will say that this spot is more ideal for patrons that are already downtown. If you are not, you will have to find parking on the street( which will likely have a cost!). When we walked in there were ample staff at the counter. I ordered an unsweetened matcha latte with oat milk. I love the fact that they offer both a pre- sweetened and a non sweetened option! My drink was made quickly. We opted to dine in to enjoy the unique seating options. They have a sitting area that is directly on the stairs. They have pillows out for a little extra cushion. It's such a vibe! In addition to the cute vibe, they have a small retail section. They had a number of flavored syrups for sale and popcorn. If you are in the area I would strongly suggest stopping on.

Came here for a couple of casual work meetings and the space was nice. There are two entrances (one on Tryon and one in the hotel). TL;DR: lots of seating and places to work / chat are available From the main entrance on Tryon, you'll enter and see one large group table (can fit about 8-10 people), 4 2-person tables to the left, and a large set of steps that you can sit on and lead to more tables upstairs. From the hotel entrance, there is a ton more seating from large group tables to the smaller tables (I didn't notice this entire extra area the first time I came here). TL;DR: morning hours have pastries and afternoon hours have remaining pastries and a sandwich I ordered their dirty chai (hot the first time and iced the second time) and a blueberry muffin, both being delicious.

Ask the Community - Coco and the Director

    Is there free parking?

Like the other comment, there is metered parking in the area. It is a busy area and if you'd rather not stress over finding a spot, I'd suggest parking a few blocks away and walking there. But there's also free parking after 6pm.

I had the Sakura as it came highly recommended, and my boyfriend had the Chicharron. Both were extremely tasty and unique! I've never had a sandwich quite like this. The bread is what really sends these sandwiches over the edge. My sandwich had fresh tuna and delicious sauces/toppings. Pro tip: the salsa verde is a must! It's served down by the water and is the best I've ever had. I'd love to come back and try other options. I think the prices are comparable for the fresh ingredients and the area. You'll spend about $35 for two sandwiches, so to some this may be a deterrent. Parking was easy for us, and they do validate parking for a certain garage. I highly recommend checking out this spot!

Their signature sandwiches all come with a number of their own unique ingredients but it's important to note that they have a standard blend of toppings that comes on each sandwich similar to jersey mikes and their "mikes way". I'm glad this was explained to me because I don't know how they would have possibly fit that many ingredients on my sandwich! I went with the Ellie Get In My Belly which came with some tangy honey mustard based barbecue sauce as well as their special Kicks white sauce. The sandwich was delicious although I think they may have gone a little too overboard with the sauce as the sandwich was very messy. That being said I can tolerate messy if the flavors are good and this was a very tasty sandwich and a great lunch. It's right on the way to my yoga studio, so it's perfect for a quick in-and-out lunch, but honestly, it's also the kind of place where you end up lingering longer than planned. My usual order is the ABLT on rye with Boar's Head applewood smoked bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Simple, fresh, and consistently delicious every single time. I almost always pair it with the Spinach Bacon salad loaded with spinach, cranberries, goat cheese, tomatoes, toasted pecans, and brown sugar peppered bacon. The portions are huge and definitely shareable. What makes Rhino special is that it's more than just a deli. It's part neighborhood market, part coffee shop, part beer and wine stop, and part community hangout. They've got local products, grab-and-go snacks, fresh sandwiches, beer on tap, wine, outdoor patio seating, and sometimes even live music. It reminds me of the small independent spots I used to love in the Bay Area around Burlingame, San Mateo, and Palo Alto. Relaxed, local, welcoming, and full of personality. The staff is always friendly, and the atmosphere feels genuinely Charlotte. Not overly polished. Not trying too hard. Just good food, good people, and a place that locals clearly love. And if you are visiting North Carolina, you absolutely have to try Cheerwine at least once. It's basically a Carolina rite of passage. Cherry soda lovers will probably be obsessed. Me personally? Not exactly my flavor profile, but people here drink it like water, so clearly they are onto something. Rhino Market is one of those places that makes a city feel like home. The strangest thing was, on the left side of the sandwich were several slices of deli turkey rolled up. On the right side of the sandwich were several slices of deli ham rolled up. I hadn't seen a sandwich made like that before. It felt like half of a turkey sandwich and half of a ham sandwich as opposed to a ham and turkey sandwich. Was it bad? Definitely not.
