You had me at lavender... What other city can provide a plethora of donut venues? To me, Portland is the capital of donuts and each time I visit this city I make a pilgrimage to Coco Donuts in the downtown location making this one of my top local donut shops. My five star experience always begins with their lavender raised yeast donut ($1). This masterpiece is fluffy, airy with a delicate and non-intrusive floral hint of lavender. I especially loved the faint purple hue of the glaze which covers the top of the donut so it's not overly sweet. This is definitely a crowd pleaser. For this price, I need to show resistance because I could probably eat more than one in a sitting. I've also had the pumpkin spiced cake donut ($1.10). Again, they used they fine ingredients to create a cake consistent donut with the perfect autumn blends of pumpkin, cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg. Hands down one of the best pumpkin spiced donuts on the West Coast. To wash it down, they roast their own coffee beans and have your typical cafe choices. I was tempted to try the lavender latte but declined because it might have been overboard with the floral accent. I'm a huge flower lover and might order the latte with a different flavored donut instead. I've been lucky enough to always visit while there was an amble selection (cake, yeast, twists, bars, jelly filled, old-fashions, etc.). With so many donut shops to choose from in Portland, I decided to come here because of the convenient location to my hotel. I wasn't too impressed with the flavor selection since most of their donut flavors are very standard. The only flavor that really stood out to me was the lavender glazed donut, but unfortunately they were out of the lavender flavor. I picked up a dozen assorted donuts for work, but got a strawberry glazed donut for myself. The strawberry donut was very good, not too sweet and very light and fluffy. I also picked up a lavender latte which came with a free donut hole! So nice of them! The donut hole was so fresh and soft... mmm. I took a swig of the lavender latte and the lavender flavor wasn't too overpowering. However, I thought it was going to be lavender tea + milk instead of coffee, so I tossed it because I don't drink/like coffee. I ended up purchasing the lavender hot chocolate and it was pretty good. It had a nice hint of lavender and I appreciate their spin on a classic drink, but it wasn't so amazing that I'll crave it. Lots of cheap doughnut options. It's a very small space so the way you line up can get kind of confusing. Sometimes it like goes in a weird circle. The first time I went I thought I was waiting in line but I wasn't. So there's that. The doughnuts themselves are so fluffy and delicious. They're not overly sweet and they have different variations in flavors. They have a couple of specialty drinks along with some regular cafe drinks like americanos and so on. I tried their lavender hot chocolate and that was delicious. I felt like the lavender flavoring wasn't too overpowering. I also tried the salted caramel latte and that one was my favorite. I did get it iced but the flavors were all present and worked really well together. read more

I went here and got a single glazed doughnut - first of all, I was so pleasantly surprised that a glazed doughnut is only $1 here! Such a great price! For comparison, a glazed doughnut at Starbucks is $1.75 and the doughnuts there are smaller and obviously much less fresh. The doughnut was large, but it was so, so light and fluffy. It was really a perfect glazed doughnut at an unbeatable price. Some other famous Portland doughnuts seem so overwhelmingly sweet and heavy to me - Coco Donuts were much more enjoyable. I was so frustrated at myself for not coming here before. I'm really looking forward to going back and trying the lavender latte. read more

Finally, a donut shop in downtown Portland that is not Voodoo...! I'm not a big fan of the Voodoo just because their donuts are dry and taste old (doesn't matter what time of the day I had it, it was not good). However, Coco Donuts is the opposite of that place. Coco's donuts are moist, full of flavors, delicious to the last bite. I had their Lavender donut which was amazing. Individual donuts priced between $0.90 - $1.20 ish. You can get a dozen donut for $10 and I think that's a hella of good deal. They also serve yummy Espresso drinks. To my surprise, they also give you a donut hole with your drinks. Yummmm!!! I love this place not because the color scheme is pink, but the service is also fast, friendly, and their donuts are FRESH. This is a simple cute little donut shop. I love to come here in the mornings to just pick something up quick. The donuts are simple, light, and fluffy. Glazed, powdered, jelly filled, bear clawed, twisted.. You want it? They got it! The drinks are like a warm hug for your stomach. I had the lavender latte and I thought it was slightly off, but my friend told me that it was suppose to taste like that. Drinks come with a donut hole! After a certain time they offer a dozen donuts for $6 or so. What a steal! You don't have to wait in a wretched long line for dry overpriced donuts. Portland offers a lot of donut places that seem so hyped and overrated. Maybe I'm just a plain and simple person. On a recent stop in Portland, the wife and I were looking to fill our donut fix. We had heard about and tried the famous ones (Voodoo, Blue Star) but wanted to try something different (we of course figured out afterwards this one is pretty well known too). The donuts turned out to be the best we had in the city, and maybe ever. The wife had a lavender glazed donut, I had chocolate glazed donut. Both were fantastic. Texture and icing were both great. So, donuts. I don't eat donuts on a regular basis, but my travel buddy really digs them. She looked up this spot by Pioneer Square. And I'm a better person for it. I know that Voodoo sort of holds the "donut mindshare" of Portland, but I couldn't even eat a whole one. They're just too big, and too dense, and perhaps, a touch too cloyingly sweet. Coco, on the other hand, had some of the lightest dough I've ever had in a donut. The lavender icing really is the way to go, and expertly done, with just a hint of lavender essence, and not like licking a dresser drawer satchel. The maple buttermilk donut was also nice, with a richer dough flavor (and lux texture) compared to other cake-style donuts I've had. Again, the maple flavor in the icing was just enough, and not too much. And, there was no ridiculously long line as there has been every time I've passed Voodoo. I'm a little glad I don't live in Portland because I might have become a bit of a donut addict because of this place. read more

In a city with lots of great donuts (Blue Star, Voodoo), Coco Donuts pales in comparison. It's not that there's anything wrong with the donuts. It's just that nothing about them stands out. I had a chocolate, cream filled donut, as well as a glazed old fashioned. The cream filled donut was pretty standard while the glazed old fashioned was better than most - pretty light for a cake-style donut and a nice glaze that wasn't overly sweet. If you order coffee or tea, you get a free donut hole on top of your lid, so it's a nice little taste treat if you just want a bite. With just one worker the morning I checked this place out, it took a while for her to make people's coffee drinks while at the same time grabbing donuts. This morning was at least the second time in the last three weeks where I get there at opening time, see a large rack of donuts in the front of the store, which then leaves, leaving no donuts behind in the display case. The reason seems to be that the driver is running behind. While your donuts are outstanding, your attention to service fundamentals, like actually having products to sell, needs some work. Happened to be in the area, so I sought out coco donuts on a friend's suggestion after her rant on how much voodoo donuts sucks. She was right - everything was really light and crispy, and cheap. They had gotten slammed and were down to literally 1 croissant before I walked in. They had to bring in a few trays from the other store so they had something to sell. I didn't have the full selection, but what they had looked pretty good - went with buttermilk maple bar and chocolate coconut cake donut with a dark chocolate cinnamon mocha. Sounds amazing right? And it totally was. Not the mind blowing experience my friend had described, but it was comparable to my fav little hole in the wall donut shop in Vegas. I love donuts. I don't like how gross they make you feel after eating. Voodoo Donuts gives me the grossies after eating one. So I am always on a lookout for a good but not deadly donut. I tried the lavender donut out of curiosity. Great flavor and not over the top lavender. Very light and airy. I bought a regular glazed for my husband... but it didn't make it home. I devoured it with no remorse. As for selection, they have the typical run of the milll options, but the flavor is way above average. The lady that helped me was super nice too. I stayed at a hotel nearby so decided to check out Coco for breakfast one morning. It's a small shop, but I like the layout. I ordered a chocolate old fashion and a latte, and glad to say the donut was spot on. Flavor's great, and it's not too cakey. Latte was very good as well. I come to Portland every month and I absolutely love this food Mecca! Years ago, I was introduced to Voodoo donuts and while at the time, they were good, over the past couple of years my interest has waned, but their buttermilk bar and peach fritter are still amazing. After trying Blue Star a couple of times, I feel as if their donuts do not taste like their name. For example, the lemon poppyseed (my favorite) only tastes like a hint of lemon which is a bummer. However, there's a new game in town (at least in my portfolio) and it's called Coco Donuts. Coco Donuts is very small, but they do have a good selection of traditional/fancy donuts. Lavender is one of my favorite scents and this donut has now also became a favorite. The lavender glaze is just wonderful. I also got a nice selection to include sugar, old fashioned, chocolate glaze, coconut, and apple fritter. I was so excited to try the cronuts and was more than disappointed (quite pissed actually) when at 8:30am, I was told that they have already sold out and they did not plan to make any for the rest of the day, although they had HOURS before they closed for the day. If it wasn't for the super sweet cashier, I would have given them 3 stars. Unlike Voodoo's dry donuts, Coco Donuts is so far my favorite choice in Portland. read more

The first two cappuccinos made for me here were great. The first I'd even go so far to say was one of the best I've had at a micro roaster. That was within a week of when they opened. I went there next for what I thought was going to be another stellar cappuccino. Unfortunately I was just served what is without a doubt the worst cappuccino I've ever tasted. Bad to the point I thought the machine might have just malfunctioned. I went back inside to inform the staff of the mistake and mentioned that I thought it might be a machine malfunction -- and here is why they get one star -- the barista behind the counter stared at me blankly and simply offered to throw it away for me. I pre-ordered donuts for delivery for my mom's birthday several days in advance. This morning, I got a text saying the order had been cancelled - but 5 minutes later (before I had even seen the cancellation text), I received another text, saying the order was on it's way. Great little donut shop. Minus one star for their hours--would be better if they opened an hour earlier and weren't closed Sundays. But I went today and got the chocolate glazed doughnut, which was delicious, with a 12oz plain steamed milk and was really pleased. The steamed milk was a great choice for a chilly morning.
