It was perfectly creamy and lightly lavender flavored. The latte came with a donut hole--the best I've ever had! It was like a glazed butter roll, fluffy and sweet. I also loooovvveed the old-fashioned and buttermilk donuts (which are my two favorite types of donuts). They had the perfect ratio of dough to glaze and were the perfect amount of sweetness for my taste. I was disappointed that I couldn't taste the lavender in the lavender glazed. My friend and I visited Portland last week, and while waiting for a ZipCar at 8am, wandered down Broadway. I'm so glad we did, because we found Coco Donuts! Having tasted several other cold brews in the city, Coco's was by far the best. The large ice cubes were appreciated and lasted for hours [which prevented the drink from getting watery]. And the donuts shined! My absolute favorite flavor was the maple old fashioned. A little crunch on the outside, and soft cake on the inside. I also really enjoyed the lavender. We came back 2 more times that week! It made for a memorable experience, and we felt like we had found something special [vs. going to touristy places]. We'll be back again soon! read more

Coco hype. It does not live up to its commercialism. I wonder what happened to this place. The donut selection seems to be less and less available. I came earlier and earlier and the variety was limited. What kept me coming back? I wanted to give them a fair shake. The first time I was here. The counter display was full of a large variety and so many I almost couldn't choose. The coffee was fresh and seemed to be always be made as there was a slight but moving line. Then the second and third visit. Less and less variety. Less and less selection. Now the coffee was being put in a pump carafe. It was a yeah serve yourself attitude now. Rather than a let me make and get that to you. The fourth visit was even more disappointing. Two varieties and maybe 6 donuts total to choose from. The coffee now was not made. Not in a pump carafe. I ordered it and got the attitude of why are you bothering me? Still, I wanted to believe this was an off day. I asked. What is happening here? The state has banned the type of oil they are allowed to cook the donuts in. It had something to do with the oil being rancid in California and then nobody was allowed to use it Nationwide. I googled it and sure enough. Trans Fat has been banned by the FDA and the slow ban has finally come to fruition. Well, taste has disappeared. These donuts lacked some serious flavor. It was like a piece of bread that was perfectly toasted and sprinkled with Cinamon and sugar but there was no butter on it. So, it was dry. The richness was gone. It was just dough. With icing and sprinkles and jelly. The boom was gone. I hope Coco and others can recover from this FDA ban. Maybe it will be a period of adjustment till they get it right or find a way to bring back the flavor. For now, I wouldn't even stop in for the coffee. It reminds me of when they tried to say New Coke is just as good as old coke. People actually stockpiled old coke and sold it to the highest bidder. This was before the internet was really in existence. That is how bad people missed the old. I miss the old Coco. The original Coco. read more

My girlfriend had a hankering for donuts on Saturday. We went to two separate locations at around 1:30 in the afternoon. Both locations were completely sold out for the day. What in the actual hell? You sell two things. Donuts and coffee. One of those things is literally in your name; it's what people go to your business for. And yet you sell out literally hours before you close, without any chance of making more? Absurd. Absolutely absurd. I don't expect a full selection of donuts that are constantly cranked out until the business closes, but ffs, you sell two things and I'm certainly not going out of my way to visit you for coffee. At least have a limited selection of donuts that are guaranteed to be there until closing time. If you have a random desire for a donut, call first. Or just go to Voodoo 2, where there's almost never much of a wait and they'll have donuts for you 24/7. read more

ahhhh, the best stuff ever. Good coffee, and INCREDIBLE donuts. Nothing like them. Buttermilk donuts aren't sickeningly sweet and had a balanced amount of icing on them. perfection. It also didn't dry out your mouth like a saltine haha, ive never experienced that perfect of a donut before. Even got a free donut hole with my coffee. Great staff, lots of selection.. it's really just a fight with your self control! And the pricing is so reasonable. It's nuts. Nothing like the Voodoo or Blue Star donuts. I hope it stays popular enough to make good money but doesn't too crazy popular, because we loved just waltzing in and ordering a donut with no long line or any inconveniences! The good thing is that Coco donuts makes wheat alternative donuts, mochi. There's usually just three flavors to choose from but they are nice option from the usual offerings that most donut shops have. What is odd and interesting is that, while they close at 2:00 p.m., (at least some locations) seem to have a system where they deliberately let themselves run out of inventory hours in advance. So if you were so inclined to arrive at 1:30, you may walk away with just a coffee and a pack of sugar. Not sure if it's a plot for the folks to go home early or a fear of "day olds". All the donuts I've tried have been amazing but the ones that are particular favorites are the creme filled chocolate glaze and the chocolate cake donut glazed. I love that there are now 5 locations! I dig it! Needing to grab treats for a morning meeting, I bopped into Coco Donuts today and was very impressed! The first thing I noticed was that the shop is bright, clean, and well designed. It's bright, airy and comfortable. They may have pink boxes, but that's where the similarities to Voodoo Donuts end. This place has taste... and it turns out the donuts are tasty, too! I needed to grab a dozen donuts, and as I looked through the case I noticed that Coco Donuts serves up much more traditional selections than the ultra-hyped spots in town. That being said, they also looked fresh and delicious, and were also all less than $1.50 a pop. With some sort of bulk discount, my dozen came to $12, which would buy me like 3 donuts at Blue Star. I went with very traditional styles (glazed, chocolate w/ sprinkles, cinnamon-sugar) but did also make a point to get a few topped with a lavender glaze! They were oh so good. Another thing I like about Coco Donuts is that they serve up good coffee! I was nervous about getting an espresso drink from a donut shop but still ordered my regular almond milk latte. It was VERY good! This place won't replace my go-to coffee shops any time soon, but it's nice to know that when needed, I can kill two birds with one stone. Finally, at least today the staff was super friendly. Even though it was early and none of us were properly caffeinated, we had a very pleasant interaction, with a few jokes thrown back and forth. I like these people! Coco Donuts won't satisfy the "take your tourist friends to a super weird and bougie donut shop" experience, but it's a very good choice if you want high quality donuts and coffee for your regular life. Hands down my favorite traditional donut shop in Portland. I normally swing by here after getting my haircuts down the street, and I look forward to my visits as much as my haircuts. I've even used this place as a stop on a donut crawl I started with some co-workers! Anyway, their donuts turn out so well and are fluffier than other places. The donut I use as a measuring stick is a maple ring and/or bar, and this place does it right. However, my favorite donut here is the lavender. The taste is not as strong as you would get from eating lavender in ice cream form, and that's just ok. It is a unique flavor nonetheless, and I was really impressed with how it turned out. Without fail, there's usually a family or two that's always rolling up here. I don't blame them, because the donuts here will make any kid and adult feel satisfied after eating one or two... or more. They have plenty of space for enjoying your food, which include a tall L-shaped counter, a communal table, and a few stadium style seats facing the street. Prices are very fair for each donut, and their coffee too is pretty great. Then again, we all know donuts and coffee go hand in hand. If you're from out of town, I get it if you're going to Pip's, Blue Star, or Voodoo, but I suggest coming here solely based on the lavender donut. read more

This review makes me feel like a crotchety old woman, but: great donuts, fair service. The service us the only thing that keeps this from being a five star review. I've been in there many times and the donuts are always fresh and really delicious. I love the chocolate bar and crumb coated the best. Now, for the service. Almost never a greeting, I usually have to initiate the greeting. No thanks for purchase, no smiles. Kind of a bummer and definitely makes me less excited to go in. Sometimes the staff is having their own convo and doesn't stop when you walk in... If it was just once, I'd understand: people have bad days, maybe their cat died, maybe their car broke down. But it's every time I've gone in. Still, go for the yummy donuts! And maybe the staff will learn about customer service? read more

These donuts are great! They are never dense and greasy--the apple fritter just melts in your mouth. I also really like the space: old school chairs (reminds me of one of my college lecture halls), a large barn door between the kitchen and sit down area, very clean and the staff is awesome. Most donuts are right around $1 ( $.90 for plain, most donuts are $1 or $1.10). They have lots of drink options (bottled juices and water, etc. and lots of coffee drinks). read more

So I consider myself somewhat of a donut connoisseur - I LOVE THEM. That being said, they generally aren't the healthiest option, so I try to only each the most delicious of donuts, so I'm not wasting calories on gross crap. Today I tried the glazed raised donut (my standard at each bakery), and a chocolate cake. The glazed was good! It was very fluffy and not too chewy or dense. I prefer a little denser of a dough, but this was good and very satisfying. The glaze was not too thick, and hence the donut itself wasn't too sweet. An excellent donut for those who aren't too into donuts. Some of the other flavor glazed looked more heavily frosted, if you're into that. The chocolate cake was OK. It was smaller than at other donuts, but the cake itself wasn't particularly well-flavored, it was just pretty standard. Nothing spectacular. Would I eat here again? Maybe - but I probably wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Nice donut shop! At the server's recommendation, I tried the lavender glazed (a house special, I guess) and also a chocolate with coconut. Very good. Very clean inside. Two things, though. 1. I asked if they use High Fructose Corn Syrup in their donuts. The server was completely unable to answer this question. A pretty important question to be able to answer. 2. They really need to advertise. I drive past here constantly and never noticed til I walked past it going somewhere else. I was so surprised when she told me it's been here several months. Coco Donuts has a big glass window where you can peek into their kitchen and watch everything going on, like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. You can smell the magic in the evening as the bakers get all their dough ready for the next day. Vanilla, sugar, yeast, bread. After walking by the night before, we stopped in the next morning and picked up a chocolate glazed and a lemon filled. The raised donuts were super light and fluffy, not greasy at all. I've always been a fan of Staccato Gelato and their salted caramel and french cruellers so I really didn't think I could make room for another donut spot. But I was wrong. Coco Donuts is just about perfect. The donuts are super fresh, elegantly simple masterpieces. They have that perfect airy texture to them so you don't feel like your stomach is full of rocks after eating just one, but you definitely know you're eating a donut. Great variety of classic flavors without being overwhelming, and a few unusual choices (e.g. lavender) when you want to be adventurous. The hand-crafted beverages are superb - I love that the coffee comes with a little glazed donut hole on the lid. The fiancé and I discovered the lavender hot chocolate today; it's an intriguing (and pleasant!) flavor experience you've got to try at least once in your life. Finally, the decor is so welcoming. The place is appealingly clean and uncluttered, but still homey. The only drawback is the limited number of seats. Luckily, we live close enough that we can take our treasures to go and just as happily enjoy them in our living room.
