Delish! I had a perfect fish & chips meal here. The fish tasted fresh and was nicely fried in a fluffy batter. The fries were the "good kind," crispy on the outside but hot and soft on the inside. The only thing I would change is the portion size as the fish felt a little on the smaller side, or maybe I just wanted more because it was really good! We stopped in Coconut Joe's for a quick bite to eat since we were hungry and just arrived in Isle of Palms. It is a true southern beach bar - fried food, overly sweet drinks, and deck that over looks the beach. The food was fine, the place felt a bit dirty, they clearly need to invest in updating it. Our waited was attentive but clearly had a runny nose which made us feel like it was dirty and questionable that we may get sick. read more

What's great about this place was they have a rooftop. And apparently a DJ comes to play in the evenings which makes for a hip atmosphere. The food was pretty basic though, nothing to write home about. I ordered a lobster roll which was good and one of the frozen mango drinks which was really good cause it's blended fresh and not from a machine. read more

I was ready to give five stars until we received the bill. There was a 3.5% surcharge for ALL non-cash payments, including debit cards. Surcharging debit cards is illegal for federal law and also goes against visa and MasterCard rules. I don't remember being informed or seeing a notice beforehand, so be aware of this. That being said, the food was awesome. My wife had the shrimp tacos and I had the coconut shrimp platter with pimento cheese grits and Southern style green beans. Everything was delicious. Pretty good bar and grill in one of the best locations on Folly, although I do miss St. James Gate. It's winter so everything is a little slower, we got here around 7:30pm, thought they closed at 10, they told us 9 but I really think they were just being nice and closed at 8. Still very friendly and got our drinks and food out quickly though! Blackened catch of the day was the star of the evening, fantastic! There was nothing wrong with the scallops, they were fine, but definitely don't present as fresh local hand breaded scallops (they aren't advertised that way to be fair) but they are too uniform to not be processed. I might be wrong. Also the French fires are surprisingly delicious, don't pass them up! The only disappointing part of the meal was unfortunately the thing we went there to try, the coconut shrimp. I believe they would have had a good flavor to them but they were so far beyond overcooked it was a task to chew through them. Which is strange because it was all 16 coconut shrimp (across the table) and everything else was cooked perfectly. Oh well, you should still give this place a try and I hope your shrimp are fantastic! read more

This is a fun spot, especially for anyone on vacation who wants a good view of the beach. The restaurant is basically three levels, but I believe service is only the top two floors. Second floor, you get cover from the sun or rain with open windows for fresh breeze. Top floor is a rooftop style. I have not tried the food, just stopped in for drinks a couple times. They do all the Bahama momma type cocktails along with a good beer selection. read more

I want to start by saying Bri was amazing, especially considering it was her first day. She was kind, attentive, and clearly trying her best in a complete disaster of a restaurant. We made a reservation and showed up maybe 10 minutes early, only for the hostess to immediately tell us they were "so busy" and might not be able to seat us... meanwhile there were maybe three tables occupied in the entire restaurant at 8 p.m. They were also out of an insane amount of food. We asked for multiple items including sweet potato fries and several seafood dishes, and either weren't told they were unavailable until AFTER ordering or literally until the food came out. If half your menu is unavailable, tell people before they order. The food itself was awful. The salmon and mahi mahi were dry, bland, and overcooked. My friend's sandwich came out missing bacon because they were out, but neither we nor our server were told beforehand. The salmon was also supposed to come in a sauce and arrived completely plain. Then it somehow got worse. I told the manager, Bryce, that the bathroom toilet was covered in urine, and he laughed and said, "It's a Sunday night, that's expected," before going back to sitting at the bar vaping around the ingredients. Not once did a manager come check on our table after all the issues. While we were eating, multiple customers walked by saying things like "get us the fuck out of here," and Bryce was incredibly rude to them too. Also, the recent reviews are beyond suspicious. There is absolutely no believable reason a restaurant suddenly gets 100+ glowing reviews in 1-2 days unless there's some kind of incentive involved or they're just FAKE. People should seriously look at that before trusting the ratings. read more

I recently visited coconut Joe's Beach Grill with a group of girlfriends after being at the beach all morning. We loved the beach vibe of the restaurant immediately walking in. We were able to sit down quickly and our waitress did a pretty good job. I'm not sure how many other sections she had as the restaurant is multiple levels so we tried to give her grace as much as possible. The crab dip was not very good and tasted fishy. I've had crab dip from almost every seafood place in Charleston and never had it taste as fishy. All of the other food was excellent. I had a salad with coconut shrimp on top and the shrimp were delicious. The burger was a good size burger and had good flavor. My friend was impressed with the shrimp tacos! All in all, I would definitely eat there again but I would not recommend the crab dip. read more

What an awful experience only partially saved by a few decent dishes. Came here with the girlfriend and two of my kids yesterday. We get seated in the downstairs patio area and it's so loud because the TVs are just BLASTING a football game we asked to be moved, we go upstairs and it's only marginally quieter. The fried pickles appetizer was tasty and promised great things. And then we waited FOREVER for food. At one point our server came over and said she would check on my girlfriend's steak & eggs (we didn't ask her to) which seemed to be the hold up. She went by a few more times with no update. Eventually she said it was almost done and we would get a discount (it was expensive at $31). I told her that was appreciated but a discount wasn't really needed, we just wanted to eat. Finally our food came out... minus the steak & eggs. The person bringing the food had his hands full with the three plates but said he would be back with the steak & eggs. We never saw him again. We sat there awkwardly staring at our food until the girlfriend told us to go ahead and eat. My Mahi BLT was pretty good. My daughter and son like their chicken tends and beach burger, and fries were appreciated. That said, our food was lukewarm at best and clearly had been sitting waiting for the steak & eggs. Then a lady shows up in a black shirt, I am assuming she was the manager? She apologizes, offers to bring my girlfriend some fries to tide her over, which we accepted. No fries show up. Eventually her steak & eggs arrive. Again, no fries, just the hash browns it was supposed to come with. The steak was ordered "medium rare" but came out more than "well done". Meanwhile the ketchup container on the table is missing, we had to ask for that and we get a backer of condiments that every other table had. Of course, the ketchup is virtually empty. Instead of trying to deal with the server anymore I swap with an empty table, the one is empty too. I check with one set on the side, also empty. This place can't even keep ketchup containers full? We got there at 12:30, there is no way all these ketchup containers got emptied... this place just doesn't remember to fill them. The lady in the black shirt (again, my suspicion is that she's the manager) comes over to check on us. My girlfriend tells her that the steak was well done and it was ordered medium rare. She literally does not say a word. Just turns around and leaves. Never saw her again either. No offer from the server for boxes even though my girlfriend still had a lot of the potatoes and my son had half a burger left. Oh, and the discount on the bill? $9. On a $31 plate that came out LONG after the rest of us ate (and our food was already cool when we got it), and not cooked to order. As far as I am concerned, they owe me $8 for the half a burger that we left behind and another $22 for the steak. Never before in my life have I been tempted to not leave a tip before (I did anyways) but no one here deserved it. This restaurant is terrible and is to be avoided at all costs. This is what I get for making a decision on the fly standing on a street corner instead of looking at reviews first. This place's 3 star average on Yelp! is extremely generous. We arrived around 1pm Christmas Day with no reservation. We were given a wait time of 45 minutes which was accurate. We were thankful for the open restaurant and had time to browse the shops while enjoying the beautiful weather. When we were seated and drink orders were taken, our waitress thanked us for our patience as there were only two waitresses working. We ordered the Island Shrimp nachos, Galapagos Island Salad and Shrimp Po'boy. It was all delicious! The portions were huge. The nachos were ordered as a meal and it was more than one person could eat! I wasn't sure about the bbq sauce on the nachos when I read the menu.....but it worked! So good! The salad, absolutely delicious! Tangy, crunchy, fresh! The best salad I've had in a while. My husband commented that his po'boy was really good. Put Coconut Joe's on your list! I pointed out that it was very bad business to call me less than 24 hours in advance to cancel such a large reservation on a Saturday night. I am having difficulty deciding on a rating for this restaurant. Our server, Kelsey, was an All-Star and deserves as many stars as humanly possible. The rooftop dining area is also deserving of five stars. Same for the food...once we received it. We were seated for 90 minutes before our entrees were served. 90 minutes!! Again, this is where Kelsey shined. She engaged with us regularly. We felt horrible for her to be in this position. We had no place to be so it was no big deal. Also, at some point, you think to yourself "how much longer can it be." Also, and I cannot emphasize this enough, do not advertise hand-cut fries on your menu to then serve pea-coated fries. They were there until 10, but I feel as though more people would have stayed and come in if the business had let them stay longer. It was really fun! Bartenders were nice. Have been a few times, most recently this holiday week, and had a good time. The male bartender/server was very energetic and friendly and was good about checking in on if we needed anything. My fried grouper sandwich was very good. Big windows all around are good for watching the world go by, and the porch out back or up top (weather permitting) are nice as well. We sat on the patio! We ordered fried pickles and the shrimp bbq nachos. The pickles were fantastic! Let's talk about it the Shrimp Nachos. They were so yummy with shrimp, jalapeños, queso, and pineapple salsa. It was drizzled with bbq sauce and sour cream. I wish there was more shrimp and more pineapple salsa. This dish was so tasty though and devoured by three people haha! It was fun here and we will definitely be back. read more

I LOVE Coconut Joe's for a fun drink stop! Different areas of the restaurant/bar you can check out seating wise - whether that be in indoors, patio, upstairs patio/deck - each offers a slightly different "vibe" which is appreciate. Unfortunately I am not the biggest fan of the food aspect. It's subpar (in my opinion) for what you're paying... and the overall quality is lacking. The Baja fish tacos (pictured) were ok... very basic, but not worth the price tag. The French fries though... spectacular! The coconut shrimp... did not taste like much at all. Service was average. Had to ask multiple times for refills on drinks. Food came out very slow. You could tell some dishes had been sitting there for a little too long under the warmer. We sat inside this instance, and it was extremely hot - might as well have been sitting outside. Finally got to come check out the new Coconut Joe's on Folly! I had a spicy margarita I got to enjoy on the rooftop. It was a Tuesday night and perfect because it wasn't crowded and we found space at the bar. I appreciated that it's pet friendly and we were able to bring our dog up. We also had our baby with us and the music wasn't too loud. I got the blackened grouper and shrimp with cole slaw and mashed potatoes and it was gooodd!
