We ordered poke bowls and were surprised that not only had they changed the recipe the serving was much smaller and more expensive. Second trip to this cafe. I had heard from someone that Coconuts had the best fish tacos on the Island. If it isn't the best, it is way up there. I had the Mahi Salad this time and it was delicious. The service is what really stood out to me. We came in for some fish tacos and coconut shrimp and we were immediately greeted with warm smiles and friendliness. Nice staff. The food was a bit bland (as expected) in taste and color. Less sauce on the potato salad would let the color of potatoes shine through. I would also suggest renaming the "fried chicken " as we were surprised it was actually popcorn chicken . The chicken looked grey and not brown. Coconut's isn't fancy, but the food is good and a good value too. My favorite is Caesar salad with grilled chicken or blackened grilled chicken, but the fish options are good too. It's nothing much to look at, but it's a good Caesar salad with a fair amount of bite to the dressing (garlic, etc.). Located on the second floor of the building in a small shopping center, things don't look all that promising, but once you get inside the dining room, it's quite pleasant, with a fresh breeze and attentive staff. There is also outdoor seating (also on the second floor at the top of the stairs) ... and if you are eating out there, they'll give you a pager to let you know when your food is ready (inside, you get a number on a stand, and they bring it to your table). The staff is helpful, and the atmosphere is informal, great for families or when coming from a beach. There is nothing pretentious about Coconut's. I will go back. read more

Yum! Coconuts is the quintessential beach tacos place. Friendly, casual, excellent tacos, and grilled fresh fish plates. We spent the day in Keihe and made our way for a simple and delicious lunch at 2 pm on a July 2nd Sunday afternoon. It's wasn't crowded as it sometimes will be in our past visits. We were greeted by cheerful and attentive host who was patient in taking our order. We ordered fish tacos, seared ahi tuna sandwich, and I got a blacken Mahi Mahi plate on brown rice and fresh slaw. It was a hot day in the 90s, so this visit we waited inside on one of their trademark surfboard tables, which add a surfers atmosphere and ambiance dude! As you can see from my posted photos, the tacos have mango, slaw, and salsa. According to my wife they are one of the best on Maui! My blacken Mahi Mahi was grilled perfectly and tasted amazing! My son gobbled up his Ahi tuna sandwich and looked incredible. The only critical feedback is this incredibly delicious fare is served on small plates and my entree would spill over the edge on the table. Also, the restrooms are awkwardly located in the back of Coconuts and you news to track outside around the building. Despite those issues the service is GREAT and food amazing! No visit to Maui is complete without hangin' loose with some wonderful fish tacos at Coconuts! read more

A mainstay of our Maui visits, Coconut's Fish Cafe (named after the owner's cat Coconut) serves a wide variety of seafood, from clam chowder to seafood pasta to fried shrimp and fish to poke. The staff is always friendly and the interior is large and spotlessly immaculate, even the outdoor seating area. They've got their own bathrooms, drink dispensers, and a self-serve station for utensils and sauces. Though they're known for their fish tacos, I think they're good but not the best I've ever had. My favorite are the fish and chips. The fish is soft and delicate, and lightly battered. While I personally think the fish is slightly underseasoned, it goes well with the tartar sauce (as do the fries). On the other hand, the clam chowder is salty, but does contain ample chunks of fish and clams, making it a pretty decent deal. Poke seems fresh. Overall, while Coconut's isn't a place I'm ever salivating after, it's a staple whenever I'm in Kihei. read more

Great place for a casual dinner or a light lunch. The fish tacos were delicious. It's kind of a fast casual feel, so don't expect fine dining experience, but the food and service is great. It's only okay... maybe they shouldn't have talked up their fish tacos so much. We found the fish they used to be too firm, and there were only a few small pieces hidden amidst the overly sauced cabbage and mango salsa. Solid lunch spot in the Kīhei area if you want a casual sit down seafood place. Coconut's focuses on healthy alternatives with light breading on the fried options, brown rice on the side, and uses coconut milk in its slaw (honestly was not have been able to tell the difference!). We shared the coconut shrimp appetizer which was indeed lightly fried and not greasy at all - it came with a sweet and mildly spicy Thai chili sauce for dipping. For entrees, I had the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi which was lightly pan fried and flavorful; part of it was topped with their homemade mango coconut sauce which gave a sweetness to the dish, but the fish was good even without the sauce. The coleslaw added a refreshing crunch to the meal. My husband had the grilled fish tacos which we were told is their most popular dish - it comes with 2 tacos with toppings of coleslaw, cheese, and salsa; they were decent but nothing out of this world. Great place that's open late near our place vacationing in Kihei. Easy to spot with their bright sign and on the second floor of a shopping plaza, it was busy but service was fast. Best fish tacos I had in Maui! Great for a quick bite near the beach and open relatively late. This restaurant is the type where you order at the front. It's pretty laid back for that reason, and I imagine great for takeaway. They have both inside and outside (covered) seating. The fish here is really fresh! I love the fish tacos but decided to try the blackened Mahi sandwich. It was top notch. The fish was perfectly grilled with the right amount of seasoning so you could taste everything. Was recommended this restaurant by a friend, and it was an instant hit! My boyfriend got the mango fish tacos which are a fan favorite and they were delicious. I got the kalua pork plate and *chefs kiss*‼ Maui just does kalua pork right. Wish the portions of sides were a tad bigger for the price, but it was so good I didn't even mind. Dinner at our first night in Maui We walked down S Kihei Street and found this restaurant. The restaurant is on the second level at the Kamaole Plaza. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon when we walked in... our first dinner in Maui. It got busy after we left. This is a counter service restaurant. Their specialties are fish tacos, fish & chips, and fish "burgers" (fish filet sandwiches). We ordered fish & chips and a cup of seafood chowder. The fish & chips was served with fries, their famous coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. The fish were not your usual cod, we were told the two pieces each were Mahi-Mahi and Ono. Wow! Their fish & chips plate is healthier than at most places because it has a light coating and is not greasy. The cole slaw was made with coconut milk instead of mayo. The Seafood Chowder (New England style chowder with Ono, Mahi-Mahi, clams, garlic, onions and mushrooms) was delicious! The picnic tables were cool and shaped like surfboards. Prices were affordable and the staff happily visit customers' tables, making sure everything has been cooked to their standards. No ocean view but a good place for a quick and easy lunch or dinner.
