Nowhere is the warmth of the Newport community epitomized more than it is here, thanks to owner / operator Alyssa. Whether I'm looking for a cup of coffee, a bottle of water mid-run, or a lively dose of conversation, Alyssa always serves the best. Her menu and pricing is clearly advertised on the blackboard behind her and a yummy display of treats is right on the counter for your choosing. I'm sure rent in Newport isn't cheap, but pricing is still extraordinarily expensive. $39.95 (NOT including tax) for a SMALL packet of Pirate's booty ($2.75), an apple turnover (more than $10), a frozen lemonade and two coffees. The mocha coffee had an extra shot, but the upcharge was for the shot, for oat milk ($1) and for the chocolate part. We won't be back. In fairness though, the coffee was incredibly good, but we could have got two meals for the price of three drinks and two snacks. read more

The walk and spot are priceless right on the water and the the variety is scones and pastries are very good and individually wrapped. We had 3 espresso drinks and one regular coffee all ok and 3 pastries that were good and it was $56. Seemed expensive to us even coming from NYC. This is my favorite coffee spot in Newport. I've lived here for 7 years and my guilty pleasure is walking downtown and grabbing a great cup of coffee or an iced latte if I'm feeling adventurous. Alyssa [sic] the owner does an amazing job and is a pleasure to talk to. She's open year round although the shop hours vary depending on the season. This coffee place wasn't really anything special. Except for the prices I suppose. After getting 4 drinks and 5 small pastry/bakery items the total was $70. Only two of the drinks were espresso, and the other two were regular coffees. On top of that, the sizes were rather small, especially for such outrageous pricing. I would have called their large size a medium based on sizing from any other coffee place I'd been to. The drinks were good as well as the bakery items however certainly not $70 good. read more

My wife got 2 16oz cups of frozen cappuccino slushees from this spot. The "large" (about the size of a shot glass) and a bottle of water including a tip (because my wife is nice) it came to almost 40 dollars. The woman bragged to us about being featured on the food network as one of the best coffees in town. Neither of us could drink our 11 dollar disgusting watered down drinks from the machine AND most likely not even real coffee??? I have worked in seasonal locations and I know how hard it is to pay rent for these owners but for 40 dollars PLEASE impress us with something??? This crap tasted worse than dunkin and the water??? Well, that was for sure worth 10 dollars and was thankfully enough to satiate an ant! Must have been special RI water! Oh, it wasn't:( I get it...You have a short season and you got to do what ya got to do;) Oh, wait you say you are open year round...Do the locals hang here? If I could give zero stars I would. As reviews all over the internet note, this place price gouges in a way I've never encountered before. Even for a tourist town. Ordered two medium drip coffees and got charged $12, and the coffee was sub-par. Have you ever heard of a six dollar to-go cup of drip coffee? You probably haven't, because it likely doesn't exist anywhere but this store. Seems like I got off better than others though. Best advice, before ordering anything get the owner to ring it up at the register, or your wallet will leave empty. Better yet, avoid the business entirely. Shady at best. I guess if almost everyone goes only once because they are visiting, the business doesn't need to care, and they clearly don't given all the same negative reviews posted for the past year at least. Forget the small business thing. Any business that price gouges it's customers should be out of business. Do not fall for this tourist trap like many of us did. I was on my first anniversary trip with my wife. We thought the place was adorable and we're so excited to grab coffee there on our first morning we got 2 large ice coffees (the size of a Starbucks grande), 2 pastries and juice. I frequent Starbucks so I'm used to paying for coffee- but our total came to $55 dollars!! $10 for a tiny iced coffee! I was so shocked, I paid and left, but afterwards the more I thought about it realized how incredibly outrageous this is- then I read the reviews and saw that this has happened to MANY people! I could have gone to a fabulous brunch with bloody marys and mimosas for the price. Something is definitely not right here! By far the most ridiculously priced coffee establishment I've ever been to, even for being in an expensive area like Newport. You know a place is ridiculously priced when each customer in front of you has asked the barista (pretty sure she's the owner too) why their total bill is so high. I wouldn't really mind paying the outrageous prices if the coffee's quality matched the price. Having worked in a traditional Italian cafe for many years, I know a good espresso when i see/taste one. Beautiful spot, not too sure about the drinks. 6+ dollars for a iced pumpkin chai latte? Which I had ordered a large, and I'm pretty sure it was actually a medium. I'm sorry, but I get an ABSOLUTELY amazing pumpkin iced latte back home for less than 6 dollars that has the most amazing coffee flavor. If you are a coffee snob or just love good coffee this place is a must try while in Newport. Tucked way in back at Banisters Wharf this place is tiny. You get your coffee and go sit outside in the nice area and relax and look at all the boats that most of us can't afford. The owner was there making the coffee all 5 times we went. Idk how this woman does it but she is here early AM until 11pm serving up some great coffee and snacks. She makes all of the baked goods herself, these are scratch made not some box cake mix. Yes it's pricey but what do you expect for some homemade baked goods and great espresso smack dab in the middle of Newport! If you want some Kurig or gas station coffee there are plenty of places that sell that but if you want quality and don't mind paying for quality this is your place. My girl went twice a day for 3 days and there's a line every time, most impressive was she knew my girls order by day two. I don't even know what my girl orders, gotta text her from Starbucks line every time I go for her! The owner is one of the friendliest people I've ever met, this place has a million dollar view and some of the best lemon and blueberry cakes I've ever eaten. Ten stars if I could give it! read more

Awful! Just awful! We paid $17.71(cash) for two iced lattes and never get receipt. The woman is gross, no gloves, doesn't even wash her hands after handling cash. The latte was bad. She didn't even used espresso. Just put iced coffee over milk. All the pastries wrapped in plastic wrap that's means it's been sitting there for days. I know. We own a cafe in Manhattan. My husband and I were on the hunt for a good coffee shop while vacationing in Newport. We came across the Coffee Grinder and decided to try It out. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! Two "large" lattes, which were no more than 12 oz servings, one piece of lemon poppy seed bread, and a scone came to a grand total of $46. I was in such a state of shock at the price that I handed the owner the money and immediately regretted my decision. I returned to where my husband had secured a table and he asked if the price was correct because he thought he misheard it. At this point I was adding up the items to see how this price was even possible. While sitting at our table in disbelief, we overheard another couple at the register questioning their overpriced coffees. The owner tried to justify the prices by saying that everything was homemade, ingredients aren't cheap, and there was 8% sales tax. When the other couple sat down next to us, we discussed how ridiculous the prices were and how there was no way coffee and pastries should have cost that much. The cherry on top of the whole experience was when ever a customer left the shop, the owner basically forced them into saying how great everything was. It was to the point where we had to sneak out just to avoid the awkward conversation. This owner survives off of tourists who don't know any better and is dishonest about prices which are handwritten on a messy menu board. Save your money and go elsewhere! We went out to breakfast the following day at The Corner Cafe and we were able to get two massive portions of delicious food plus drinks for less than what we paid at the Coffee Grinder. read more

PAY ATTENTION VERY EXPENSIVE, the owner is nice but gets away with people not checking menu prices as she talks to them about everything and anything, and that people take the usual coffee prices for granted when purchasing their morning cup. Whenever I go to Newport, I make a point of getting coffee and a treat here. First of all, the owner is super nice, and she takes her caffeine seriously! She gets amazing imported Italian espresso and offers a ton of options and flavors. She has soy and almond milk, and I swear she makes the best soy latte I've had.
