Probably my coffeeshop of choice in the area. I tend to go to coffeeshops in order to work rather than for high-end beverages - most of the time I just get the drip. You can tell this is a student-based coffeeshop, as it's right across the street from the community college, and it's set up to be a place to do work. There are plenty of tables inside and I've never had a problem with seating. One of the especially nice things is that if you're a bike commuter, it's entirely possible to park your bike out front and then snag a table by the window so that you can keep an eye on it. Good news for those of you with spendy wheels. As for outside seating, there's a bunch of wooden somewhat-like-Adirondack chairs out front that do appear to be specifically for smoking as there's ashtrays set up at all the tables. For those who are looking for a smoke-free alternative, there's actually a table out back near the bathroom which I'm pretty sure is available for outdoor seating. It's sort of a strange backroom setup, but you could probably sit there and nobody would mess with you. Not sure if the wifi would work that far out, though. As for the coffee itself, it's pretty good. Again, I always order the drip, but the great thing about the drip here is that it's $1.50 for a cup with unlimited refills. Just go up and pump away. Another nice thing about it is that it's not Stumptown - not that I don't like Stumptown, don't get me wrong, it's just that a LOT of coffeeshops about Portland use their goods and it's nice to get occasional variety. Another thing is that Stumptown carries a bigger price tag as compared to other roasters. I'm pretty sure not using Stumptown is how this place can afford to be so free with their refills. If there's a distinct negative to the place, it's probably that the music selection can get a bit spicy for a coffeeshop. I generally prefer my background music to be a little bit less... experimental than what was going on the last couple of times I was in. Maybe I'm just not edgy enough to find listening to a lead guitarist slamming on the whammy bar for five songs straight awesome, but I like Elton John and I would not win an indier-than-thou Portland contest. Could just be me. Solved easily with headphones. But, overall, lots of seating, lots of plugs, baristas are nice enough, coffee is cheap as dirt and limitless, it doesn't close at 4pm, and the name is a Kurt Vonnegut reference (or if it isn't, I like to think it is because that makes it better). I've been going here since the day after they opened. They started off with a bang and have definitely had to take steps to remain consistent throughout. The morning crew is now spot on and coffee is consistent. The store itself is pretty cool and the location is hard to beat. I like the fact that it is owned very locally by 2 brothers who have partnered to make this thing fly. The only negative is that the acoustics are echoey (Is that a word?) so if the music is up it can be hard to have a conversation. Going to Coffeehouse 5 is like entering an episode of Peter Gunn. (If you don't know Peter Gunn, just give up now.) Coffeehouse 5 is my favorite Kurt Vonnegut-monikered, jazz-themed business in North Portland, which is no easy feat considering how good the salmon and shiitake tofu scramble at Benny Goodman's Breakfast of Champions on Lombard is. While jazz is generally considered by me to be the 8th greatest musical genre (after Chicago Blues, Acid Blues, Backwater, Steakwater Blues, Conquistadora Blues, Poppins Blues, and Wolf-Man's own invention, Freak Out Saturday Morning Cartoon Blues), it provides for a very pleasant atmosphere for coffee drinking. The rest of the ambiance is very nice. The entire exterior is windows, making sure that there is tons of natural light, which this reviewer appreciates. The light fixtures are beautiful glass chandeliers. And I know my chandeliers (I spent 4 days in the French countryside during my 1981 Who's Afraid of the Virginia Wolf-Man? European Tour with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Harold "Country Fried Steak" Rosenstein). The art on the walls is tasteful and the diverse seating arrangements, from couches to tables to counters, provide many comfortable choices. The shop is right across from PCC Cascade, so there are always scores of students studying. The coffee at this place is excellent. I most frequently get just a mug of coffee -as much a modern classic as Blues Hammer's "Stinkeye Mama Blues" -which is usually a choice of two high quality single origins from local beansters Cellar Door. They often have whole bean and espresso options from a variety of top-notch west coast roasters, which shows their commitment to sourcing high quality products. As someone who plays music that was quite popular during the Great Depression, I like to think I know a good value when I see one (or hear about one, as the case may be). A mug of coffee with a refill for $1.50 is a deal that would make Mississippi John Hurt do a spit-take with his Maxwell House! As for the lattes, they are prepared with great skill. Quite tasty. The baristas are friendly and very good at their jobs. A lot of the Yelpers who have had bad experiences here seem (from their reviews) to be like the fairly aggressive types found in the new iphone game Angry Yelpers. But you know the old adage: How many Yelpers does it take to play Grumpy Sockeye Blues on harmonica in Paddy Richter tuning? Haha. I cannot stand this place. The coffee is less than lackluster and the sandwiches are way overpriced for what you get - which you don't know the price unless you ask because they do not have sandwich prices in their menu board. Generally sandwiches are around $6-7 and they are just sandwiches. If you have nothing else to eat/drink, I guess you could justify spending money here. Otherwise, don't waste your time or money. Go down the road and you will find better coffeehouses a block away that will probably also be overpriced but at least better quality. read more

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. Just back from driving up and down the west coast from Vancouver, BC to Monterrey. This was hands down the best coffee and the friendliest place of the trip. If you like a good cappuccino, as opposed to enough foam to quell an aircraft fire masking the taste of burnt beans that is served in most other places, this is the place for you! This has been one of my favorite places since the first time I stepped foot in Portland. The Drip coffee($1.50 for 16 Oz) is done to perfection and the pastries always seem fresh. It is the perfect environment to do homework or cruise the internets. Also, if you want to pretend that Portland is truly diverse you can sit in that cafe for a few hours. EVERYONE comes into the place. The service can be awkward sometimes but never rude, it is Portland. I will always walk the extra block past the Red E to get there. read more

I met a friend at Coffee House Five this afternoon--what a treat! My latte, made with Cafe Vita espresso, was wonderful. The shop had a very pleasing atmosphere. It was comfortable and just darn easy-going. There are many seating options (single bar seats, expansive tables, couches) for any variety of purposes (lounging, work, meetings), free wifi, and an array of very tempting snacks (sandwiches, soup, baked goods). I love the simplicity of this place. Just a few sandwiches on offer, with the option of a soup cup for $2.50. I bought both, of course - it was a great deal. The soup of the day was spicy beer - delicious. The coffee was great too. I'm from New Zealand and am extremely fussy about what I drink, and this place nailed it. Wandering around in the cold this afternoon in North Portland looking for somewhere to get warm, we stopped in here. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I don't know if the coffee I had was any better than if we had gone to another coffee shop, but it was hot and that was good enough for me. I know the kind I had was fair trade and I know that is a good thing, but I'm figuring you can throw a stone in this town and hit a hipster, I mean hit a coffee shop that offers fair trade coffee. The staff is super friendly and there's a legitimate community feel inside w regulars. The barista noticed I tied my dog outside and gave me a dog treat and invited me to bring her in anytime. How wonderful. And I guess this is a norm in Portland, and just one of the many reasons this city kicks ass, but that was sweet of him. I'm new to the area. I'm not a coffee drinker, but more of a tea drinker. They had a decent selection of teas, but I wanted some caffeine so I went with Earl Grey. But there was something about this one that tasted a bit off. It's one of the larger coffee shops that I've been to. Mostly tables, two couches. Coffeehouse-Five regularly provides excellently made, delicious coffee. Lattes are smooth and rich while the cappuccinos feature strong, aromatic espresso topped with a dense layer of foam. They also offer a nice assortment of teas and kombucha from Townsend Teas (in bottles, not on tap). Beverages are rounded out be a nice selection of snacks with a few vegan options. I've noticed each time I've been in a delicious sounding vegan soup is listed on the board, but I've been intent on my coffee purchases and not food. The space itself it filed with tables, but doesn't feel overly crowded by them. One wall features a very comfy sofa next to a small assortment of games and things for kids to play with. It quite often seems filled with PCC students studying. All in all, it is a pleasant place to work a little or just have a cup of coffee while reading the paper. read more

August 2011.... I received a reply from the owner at Coffeehouse-Five and was happy to hear that the owner was concerned about my visit to his shop. He was apologetic for the honest mistake and wanted to make it up to me by compensating the extra $ back or for the two coffees if that would satisfy me. I was grateful for his offer and would be more than happy to have a free cup of their very yummy tasting coffee. Like I said...the coffee is good...one of only a few that I will drink in Portland (most roasters roast to the point of bitterness...or as some folks call it, "strong") so I am happy to know that this business owner cares enough to correct an error. Thanks very much !! I would like to suggest the workers in the cafe be a little more friendly and engaging w/ the customers when dealing with them. I was in a hurry and needed to hop on I-5 the other morning (not my normal routine) and was near Killingsworth and recalled their was a coffeehouse that used to serve "Vita" coffee, which is one of less than a handful of NW coffee beans I enjoy drinking. My TOTALLY FAVORITE is Spunky Monkey....but was too far to go on this particular day. I am trying to do my part of being a caring consumer by taking in my own cup to get a cup of coffee. I was getting two cups today (one for me and one for my friend) and brought in two containers. The guy at the counter asked me what I'd like and I said two cups of coffee using my mug & my metal travel mug. He asked how much my mug holds and I said "over 12 oz. probably 14 oz" and anyone looking at the metal travel mug could see it was 12 oz. but I said to him "12 ounces". I also ordered a croissant. My bill came to like $6.75. I was charged $2.25 for the croissant and charged the 16 oz. coffee price for both of my coffees!!! read more

Totally a fan. This place has some talented baristas. Their espresso is always kick-ass, the coffee is above-decent (I'm not an aficionado on the matter, but it doesn't taste like cardboard, it is crazy luscious, even to my tobacco-numbed taste buds, and it revs me up). The baristas are great, but I always brace myself for an awkward encounter when I go in. Not bad or rude at all, I just walk away feeling awkward. But crazy caffeinated. So I have been back twice - once for food and the second time for coffee. Both times were much better then the first. I guess everyone has a bad day - maybe on my first visit, the little guy with the mustache was just not that into it. I really do think the coffee is super tasty. Also, one the owners replied to my comment. He was very nice about the whole thing - even offered to buy my next cup if I was still dissatisfied. I don't think that will be necessary. Boy did I need some caffeine after several hours of testing at PCC. I pretty much never find myself in this part of Portland, so I can't say for sure if I'll be returning. It wasn't the best coffee I've ever had, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I just ordered a large vanilla iced coffee, black. Whoever wrote the review about their cold brew being pretty acidic was right, but it wasn't terrible. I definitely drank the whole thing and enjoyed it. However, it was a bit expensive - $3.00 for a large cold brew and an extra $0.50 for added vanilla. Had it been a 20 oz, I would have had no problem paying this. However, it looked to be a 16 oz, which is a small/medium everywhere else. The service and atmosphere was good though. Friendly people, pretty simple place. Reliable coffee menu, nothing unique or complicated. No weird lingo, just your typical coffee drinks. Long story short, I wouldn't return unless I was in the area. But if I find myself at PCC again, I'll definitely think about stopping in. read more

I love Coffeehouse Five. It's one of my favorite shops in town. Like, in my personal Top 2 favorite. Their offerings vary from week-to-week, which is fantastic! On the espresso machine they usually have Big Truck Espresso from Olympia Coffee Roasting, as well as one or more blends or SOEs from a guest roaster. I've had PTs, Ecco, Cellar Door, 49th Parallel, Ritual, Velton's, etc. I've consumed countless doubleshots and macchiatos here, and have never had one that was less than fantastic. You can also get a pourover of a variety of coffees, or grab a friend and share a Chemex. ("Science!") Other details: Their space is light and airy. It's comfortable and not overly stark. The baristas are passionate about their work and are pretty damn nice. Coffee in the airpots is French press. Pastries are Nuvrei. There's a fridge with juices. They usually have a vegan soup available. Cuppings happen on Sundays at 3pm (I think every week? Maybe call first and ask). It's close to several bus lines, the yellow line, and bike parking is usually easy to come by. It's often brimming with PCC students, but I've never not been able to find a place to sit. read more

I can't knock this joint. I remember when they first opened - with PCC across the street, I knew this place would last. Living further down the block, Fresh Pot is more my jam but now that I'm taking a night class, a jolt of coffee later in the evening and cramming before a quiz in a coffee shop is more my style than say, the library (it's so clinical!) The coffee's good, the service is friendly, the floors are wooden, the art is rotated and the sandwiches are decent. Lots of windows...which makes for great people watching, particularly with such a busy intersection - I believe every corner except CH5's houses a bus stop. read more

I really wanted to like this place because I have the opportunity to stop by five days a week and need a good coffee spot before work but it's just not good. The employees are great and polite. I enjoy my experience with them every time but I just don't like the taste of anything I've tried. Coffee, tea, espresso drinks, hot chocolate... the bagels and foods are really good, though. The drinks are just so bitter or watered down that I can't find anything I want to finish and when they end up costing $7-8 after tip I can't justify going back anymore. read more

Simple uncomplicated menu. Nice vibe. Highly recommend the Pesto Veggie Sandwich ($4.25). Yes, it looks like half a sandwich bread-wise, but that thing is packed with delicious goodness. It is like a spinach side salad turned into a sandwich. And it is very filling. The sandwich came with a diverse choice of sides to choose from, and I choose the banana, which is way better than a bag of chips in my book. Yes, there is sidewalk seating, but not much and it is *not* non-smoking. And while it is hot out today in Portland (by Portland standards) it is nice and cool in here. read more
