Colby himself was seen telling host to tell waiting customers that their reservation was canceled due to "computer issues" Meanwhile we watched the servers complete transactions for customers who were already seated in the restaurant. Colby's is one of the best places to eat in Owensboro. They have a wide variety of foods and they're all excellent. My favorites are the chicken tenders, club sandwich, and pasta (especially the side pasta dish). I also love the cheese bread that comes with salad and a few of their dishes. This is locally owned restaurant. Great food. Wonderful Salmon any way you get it. The potato or veggie soups are delicious. They serve cheese bread with their entrees, soups and salads that is like getting an appetizer with your order. Their deserts are made in house. Very authentic American food made in a Chef run kitchen. The atmosphere is also exciting with a little noise on a busy night. The bar side is a little quieter if you can get a table in there. Simple but classic interior in a fabulous location downtown. They offer a banquet room. It seats about 40. It's a nice tasteful way to have a birthday, small reception or business presentation. They have a TV screen in the room for videos or presentations. In the banquet room they give you a limited but complete enough menu which is executed perfectly serving everyone within a few minutes of each other. Hot and deliciously prepared. Amazing local favorite. Food and service are both solid. Burgers are worth killing for. All the food is from scratch, and you can taste the difference! Stopped for lunch while in Owensboro and had a wonderful experience. Wife and I both had the lunch special ($10.99 which included beverage and tax). I had the pork chop and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich, both were very good. Crystal was our server and she was amazing. She was personable, attentive without smothering us and took care of all our needs. Let me start out by saying that this is my first review to leave. The way I was treated by the staff at this restaurant made me take time out of my night to post a negative review. We have eaten here several times and the food has always been just "okay". Tonight, we tried to eat here and I have never been treated so rudely or talked to in such a negative manner by a restaurant manager in my life. I assume this girl was a manager as she was in a black shirt and felt that she was empowered enough to talk to PAYING CUSTOMERS in the manner that she did. The back story is that I called ahead for a reservation (we had a party of 7) and was told the restaurant did not take reservations. Totally understandable, so I asked if they were on a wait for a party of 7. I was told that they were not on a wait. I said, "great, then we will head on over." We drive roughly 20 minutes to the restaurant (puts us there at 5:30 pm on a Saturday night) and park down the street (due to limited parking near the restaurant) and walk in the rain to go break bread at this establishment. Imagine my surprise when my father in law puts our name down on the list and the "black shirt/manager" young lady asks if we have a reservation. My father in law laughs and says well we tried to call in for one and were told you didn't take them. This "manager" snapped back at my father in law and said something to the effect that since we didn't have a reservation they could not seat us. My father in law very calmly said well why didn't you all tell us this when we called? This "manager" stood there and said that we must have misunderstood because they would never say they didn't take a reservation. Her tone and attitude were terrible. My husband spoke up and told her that he didn't appreciate her tone and attitude and she began to further argue that we were wrong. We finally said that we would just go somewhere else to eat and she said smiled and said ok. There was no one waiting to eat at this place (this should have been my first clue to go elsewhere because there wasn't a wait on a Saturday night) and several tables were empty. Our party was nicely dressed and having a nice evening together until this episode. I hope that the owners of this restaurant read these reviews and have a customer service training class for their front door staff. Our ticket would have easily been $150-$175 and we are always nice tippers because everyone in our family has waited tables at some point in our lives and appreciate the service industry. If I want to eat a nice dinner with a friendly staff, it won't be here. They gave Dick's Last Resort restaurant a run for their money tonight on rudeness. read more

Sadly as a gluten free vegetarian I didn't have much to choose from, I got a side of green beans (which were great), a plain salad (which was mostly just iceberg lettuce with one tomato), and I shared some french fries. I had heard some great things about Colby's from locals that I worked with and perhaps had too high of expectations. Believing they had a full bar, I ordered a Manhattan which the bartender apparently didn't know how to make, yet my server persisted in trying to sell me a Long Island Ice Tea (which I tactfully said I haven't been into since fake ID days). My meal was good enough, but for $22 I paid what I would for an entree at Bill's or famous Bistro but received something along the lines of Applebee's (or worse). The salad was iceberg lettuce, a couple grape tomatoes, and admittedly good dressing; the entree of a the short rib special was braised with decent flavor but dried out, and the sides came in ramekins like a hospital cafeteria. The banana cream pie was fair but again below what I expected. For the money I would go to Bill's first or famous bistro a close second. read more

Since we were only in town one night, we didn't compare other restaurants in the area, but we were surprised that the food was so "meh" based on other reviews. The staff were outstanding - we were seated right away, and the server was quite attentive. The ambiance was good, with high ceilings, and good room between tables. I think they must be lauded for their cheese bread, since it was served with everything. But it was not good. The bread was tasteless and a bizarre consistency- not crisp, as you would expect for a toasted cheese bread - it was kinda squishy. If you took the cheese off and just ate that it was pretty good - toasted cheese usually is, but it seemed like cheese that came from Sysco, as opposed to a high quality blend. I had the shrimp and grits. Now, I'm not from the South, so am not sure what this dish is traditionally supposed to taste like (which is why I tried it). The grits were fine, the shrimp small, and the dish was covered in that same cheese from the bread (i.e. not high quality) and some tomato pieces. All in all, edible, but not special. My husband got the gumbo, which again, tasted like something from Sysco. My daughter had the salad with chicken. She was disappointed by the dryness of the chicken, though it had decent flavor. The salad itself was nothing special. The best dish at the table was my son's burger, which was flavorful and cooked well. The side of loaded mashed potatoes again came with that cheese, so you know what we thought of that! All in all, an ok, but not great experience. read more

Colby's is a local, casual dining restaurant. I've been to Colby's quite a few times. It's a restaurant that I have found to be kind of hit and miss. Some of the things I've gotten at Colby's are excellent, such as the bone in pork chop or prime rib with blue cheese sauce. Others items are just ok. Their burgers are average and to me seem a little dry. I got the Cajun Chicken pasta once which was a little unimpressive. Overall I would stick to the "entrees" portion of the menu. Everything I've gotten there was been very very good. The house salad is decent, but the wedge is better. Their loaded potato chips are probably the best thing there, though. The service and atmosphere are good. The restaurant feels slightly dated but not so much so that it's offputting. The best part is it's local. read more

We sat in the back room - 8 of us. We had 2 children with us so that was great. The restaurant was busy but our waitress was patient and helpful. ALL the food items were delicious and the kid's meals came with a brownie for dessert. All the dishes were perfect temperature and all served same time, which we have not found everywhere. I ate here while in town with the family tonight. The nachos and spin dip were pretty good. I got the tilapia new orleans for dinner. It was okay. The tiny scallops and tiny shrimp reminded me of the popcorn shrimp you get at a fast food restaurant. The bearnaise sauce on top of the fish was pretty bland. It needed salt and pepper badly. My rice was a bit underdone too. My daughter had the kids prime rib and she loved it. I tried it as well and it was really good. She loved the cinnamon apples too. Everyone else really enjoyed their meals as well. The burgers looked good. My brother had the shrimp and grits and he devoured it except first thing he reached for the salt after taking his first bite. My brothers friend had the philly cheese steak sandwich and she said it was great. The service was great. Overall, the meal was good. I had a delicious meal at Colby's this evening. We made a reservation on a Friday night but it was not too busy. I would still recommend making one just in case. The hosts are friendly as well as the servers. It is a well run establishment (not surprising) being around downtown Owensboro for as long as it has. They have an early bird dinner option that we always go for, making dinner come to around $15 a person, including entree, two sides (or a side and a salad), and the dessert of the day. Pretty solid deal! And it's quality food. I opt for the salmon but my parents love and get the prime rib every time. They have nothing but good things to say. They have great side options one of which I tried penne alfredo and it was amazing- the sauce tasted homemade and the noodles were cooked to perfection. I have to brag on our waitress as she was very attentive, kind, and kept our drinks full. Another cool part of Colby's I noticed this time was they they offer a full service coffee bar. I ate there for lunch today. I ordered the lunch menu pork chops. They were tasty, and a little on the small side. The slaw was ok, nothing to write home about. Food came out pretty quickly. server was pleasant and kept our drinks filled. We had a group of about 10. One of the people in my group ordered the special of cheese grits with something on top (can't remember) but the cheese grits looked divine. Colby's is one of Owensboro's famous "non-chain" restaurants. When I go out for business lunches or dinner with the family, it's always on my short list. If you've never been, you MUST get their batter dipped chicken tenders (original). They're famous and simply the best chicken tender you'll have. The Tuna sandwich is a great healthy option for lunch and is a nice cut of tuna instead of the tuna salad you usually find. The kids menu is fantastic and we always enjoy the atmosphere. My wife and I were in Owensboro for a concert and the hotel recommended Colby's. We are so glad that they did! The food was very good and fairly priced. We tried the fried mushrooms to start and they were very good. I suggest you only do a 1/2 order unless there are 4 or more people to enjoy them. We took advantage of their early evening menu, which is a three course meal (salad/soup, entree, and desert), since we were eating at 5:30 and it is available from 4-6PM Mon-Sat. I had the gumbo as my starter and prime rib as my entree. Both were executed well. My wife had a house salad and the pork chops which were also enjoyable. The dessert is chef's choice and we were served a strawberry cake which was fine, but not quite as fantastic as the rest of the meal. It was prom season when we ate here and it was clear that this was a popular eatery for that special occasion. Overall I'd say smart casual is the norm for this restaurant. Me and my fiancee were the only two customers in Colbys, and we paid and left.. well as soon as we got out the door a few steps we noticed he forgot his phone.. well we went back inside and a waitress had cleared the table.. we told her about him leaving his phone on the table and she played dumb.. someone there stole his phone and wouldnt admit to it.
