The food is pretty good, but that's not The Point. This is a bar smack in the middle of Tip Hill. Every time I go in there, it warms my heart to see the framed picture of FDR that STILL has the place of honor right in the middle of the bar. Ya gotta understand what that means to the American Irish (and to my Polish grandmother who had the same photo framed in her house). It's the place you go after the Tip Hill Run, the FIRST run of Spring in SYR. It's the place you go to drink disgusting green beer on St. Patty's day. The bartender we ran into at Coleman's made us 2 "Irish Coffees" with no brown sugar and used a "Kool Whip" type of product (rather than actual cream). Absolutely disgusting. We also had our bill altered with additional money added to the tip and a forged signature. We will not be returning. read more

This is more a review of the bar than the food/restaurant. Live music every Friday and Saturday night, plus on many Thursdays, Sundays and various other events. It's in a neighborhood where tons of twenty-somethings live, and most of them end up at Coleman's after a night on the town. Unwelcoming to out-of-staters. My husband and I went there with my 22 and 25 year old son on a Wednesday night at about 7pm after a 6 hour drive from NH to visit my son who had a temporary job in the area. Understandably my sons were carded when they ordered a Guinness ahead of their meal. The waitress inspected their NH licenses and took their order. Shortly after she came back and said she needed to see their licenses again with a second form of ID. She took the IDs and credit cards to her manager and came back and said that one ID is bendable and the other a little frayed - which was ridiculous and not visible to the naked eye. They thought that they were fake IDs purely because they were not NY licenses and that they were using them with their parents at a 7pm dinner on a Wednesday night (we sat at a table not at the bar). We asked for the manager thinking he would have common sense but he just threw the waitress under the bus and said that he can't go against the waitress..what?!!! She obviously brought the multiple forms of IDS to him who gave the decision to not serve them without seeing them with us. I suppose we could have shown our licenses showing all four of us had the same address and highly unlikely they would be fake IDs (both sons are in transition with new jobs and have not changed their permanent address yet from their family home)but his reasoning was final in that he couldn't go against the waitress so we didn't bother and just left. I get that it is a college town and fake IDs are all over the place but, really, there has to be some common sense. I mean really even if they look young I can't see how a 22 and 25 year old with parents 55+ could look younger than 21, with showing a valid ID and credit cards. We decided to go elsewhere. Not the best food in the world I will admit that, but when it comes to great cold weather atmosphere and a good place to get a pint of Guinness in an old fashion settle, this is THE PLACE! This is the second year we went there for Sunday brunch. Last year Mother's Day, this year Easter. Both times it was a crowd pleaser. We took several out of town guests for a Saturday lunch. The fish was fried hard as were the scallops, the corned beef sandwich was tough, and the other sandwiches were overcooked (broiled and grilled). The beer was good. We have dined here often and never experienced this kind of food. read more

Having lived in Syracuse for 14 years, we've visited Coleman's quite a few times, usually to hear live music, have a Guinness or two and have a bite to eat. Last night (New Years' Eve) we met about 10 friends at the bar around 4:00pm to have a drink and dinner before we all headed to our parties for the night. I cannot explain the lack of professionalism, customer service and basic people skills that the two male bartenders possessed. I'm not sure if they were angry that they had to work or if they were just A-holes. They never once spoke to us to ask us if we wanted a drink or food and we literally had to wave them down to place repeated drink and food orders. The pub was not busy and they were blatantly ignoring us for reasons I can't understand. I was willing to overlook their attitude and lack of skill because I was there to have fun with my friends and as long as they could manage to pour a Guinness and place my food order, then I'd be fine. But the one thing that caused me to write this review is this......Our friend had bought my husband and me each a Guinness while we still had a partial beer. I told the bartender to just hold off pouring it until I finished the one I had. Then he clocked out and another bartender replaced him. When I told him my friend had bought me a beer and that I would take it now, he questioned who my friend was, who the bartender was that took the order (and my friend's money) and did I have a drink chip? I am a 50 year old woman who makes plenty of money that I don't need to try to cheat someone out of a beer. The bartender was rude and although he served me my Guinness that had been paid for already, he charged it to my tab. I would like to mention that between me, my husband and our friends, we spent over $800.00 at Coleman's. Please Mr. Coleman, get some bartenders who have pleasant personalities or at least train the ones you have to do better. This is a nice local pub (although it could certainly stand a good cleaning and some new carpet on the stairs-gross) but the bar service was so horrid that I will choose to spend my money elsewhere...On a positive note, the Kimmelburger is one of the best burgers I've had....Almost as good as Blarney Stone, where incidentally, the bartenders are pleasant and skilled. read more

I just don't get this place. I like the look of the place--it's got a nice, old fashioned vibe. The tap selection is decent, the live music frequently lame, and the service is distinctly lacking. Bartenders always seem to take a long time to get around to their customers whether the bar is slow or packed. The menu is decent at a glance, not very interesting, but it's a neighborhood joint, so expectations shouldn't be too high for creativity. The food is really not that great, seems very pre-packaged rather than made in their kitchen. The tap lines could be cleaned a little more often too--sometimes the beer has that dirty tap line funk. Even if I lived in the neighborhood I wouldn't go here with any kind of regularity, but its got passionate fans all over the city. Not for me, and I don't get the hype. read more

Yes, it has authentic in the name, which means, no, probably not 100% authentic, curmudgeonly other reviewers. But dammit, if you find yourself in Syracuse, NY, especially in the winter, and you stroll up to this warm and friendly (and huge) Irish pub and restaurant and you leave disappointed/critiquing fun if hokey touches like the Leprechaun door, then I have to guess you're either actually visiting from Ireland, or just hate Irish pubs. The bar is a massive carved wood masterpiece, as are the stairs by the front door. Stained glass pieces are scattered through the building, as are bits of decor and Irish memorabilia. The Rueben is as billed - totally delicious. On my last visit, I branched out into the corned beef and cabbage which is also an impressive plate of comfort food. Don't miss home made salad dressings (I'm partial to the blue cheese), and of course, there's a great selection of ciders and ales. read more

I had the pub pie which I recommend and the beef stew which was also very good. Not one bad comment about the entrees from our group.
