Stopped in while driving through because of the reviews. This place may be small town good but mediocre in an absolute sense. My over all impression is that this is a restaurant trying to make unique food but in reality lacks the ability to even do the basics well. Everything was bland and none of the "flavor" combinations make any sense. In all fairness I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and the top cook staff may not have been on. What a find! We were traveling home from Sandusky looking for a place to stop for lunch and Amhurst came up. I looked for spots in downtown and off we went! What an adorable town for starters and Cole's Public House was amazing! The food was fresh and the menu (and kid's menu) was awesome, I don't think you could go wrong with anything! So, I feel kind of split, here. The service was doable. It wasn't great, but not terrible. Similarly, the food wasn't spectacular, but not atrocious. However, neither were worth the prices! They're really toying with their tips when they price things that high. I got a salad, and it was what I would call a joke. It was about 5 pieces of lettuce. The chicken added was significant, so I won't complain, there, but the absurdity for the actual salad still gets me. My boyfriend was going to get the chicken marsala. But he figured he'd get a burger, instead. He should have just got what he really wanted, because the burger/sandwich he got wasn't very good. There was just about no sauce on it. It was flavorless. And the fries... they were cold when served to us. I can't recommend this place. read more

The first time we went....great! Good server, good drinks, good food! The second time, ignored (not busy). Third time, ignored again......not busy...we left. The bartender was stocking and rolled her eyes. There was only one man at the bar and he had to flag her down for service. We left again. Fourth time, we sat in the bar area (booth area). Our server had two tables, walked by us six times and never acknowledged us. She finally came up with her fake speech after almost 15 minutes. Food not bad.....pretty good. Service.....not so good. Came here for the first time. Seeing 4.9 stars recommended isn't common. So me and my husband went... The words I would use to explain this place is strange and unique. We were told to seat our selves, but weren't given a menu. Our server was great, Attentive, and informative. I ordered a soup of the day... it was a Vietnamese Carrot soup... worth a try... spicy purée of carrot with pine nuts and sour cream ..... I ate some... had a grilled cheese (Brie *very fancy*) burger with. Bacon *the cheese was gooey, the burger was grilled but black on top* I ate 96 percent of it picking off the "burnt"... the fries hard and stiff*didnt touch them* hubby had the meatloaf and mash (no complaints) Oh and the take out boxes are Chinese food carriers... I've visited Cole's Public House twice in the space of three weeks and both times, it's been wonderful. The first time, I went there for dinner. Our table split the baked goat cheese to start. It was absolutely delicious. The cheese is warm and breaded and served with a tasty tomato jam, both of which spread nicely on toasted bread points. It comes with beautiful, crisp beet chips. I had the spicy chicken salad for my main course and it was really good - plenty of grilled chicken paired with corn, black beans and fresh letter, nicely dressed with a Thai chili buttermilk dressing. It was a solid counterpoint to our starter. My second visit was over lunch. This time I had the very generous chipotle turkey club, which came with really good French fries with a delicious aioli. Every ingredient was fresh and even though I thought I'd never finish the sandwich, it was so good that I did. My guest had the truffle mac and cheese, and oh my, that dish is SO good. Although it doesn't carry the V sign for vegetarian, our server confirmed that that was just an oversight. I'll definitely be back when I'm next in the area. read more

Really bummed about the experience. It was near empty when we came in at 3:45 ish. Drink menu was awesome, food menu looked really good too. The wine I ordered was great. We didn't order a lot but The food took almost an hour, everything was cold, and my salmon was still cold and raw. We waited a bit but eventually flagged down another gal to let them know about the salmon and unfortunately didn't have anymore time to wait for another before we had to go to a family get together to discuss a funeral. I know there is no way of knowing that's why we couldn't wait any longer but it clearly didn't sit well with the staff, from there on out it was uncomfortable to say the least. No one offered a check, we had to get up and ask for everything else from that point on. It was an awful experience. I understand having a bad day, but please remember to be empathetic of what others could be going through when they visit a place that is supposed to be hospitable. read more

Coles public house offers an excellent trendy alternative to the usual restraint you would find in Lorain County. The menu is concise but utilitarian with option for most. I had their Mac n Cheese with truffles, which was to die for. The service was thorough and never did you feel you were being ignored. read more

Man what a charming place with great food! I had the Market Garden Shandy to start sipping. It was perfect to wake the old tastebuds up to a great meal. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms as an app. Man! They were tasty, my wife's meal came with a beautiful house salad of the day. Nice, fresh, and a perfect portion. I ordered the apple and Brie burger. I got it well done. In a word: FIRE. It was perfect. You can tell a lot about how good the burger is when it's welldone. These guys use great ingredients for their homemade patties. As it turns out, they basically make a mini meatloaf for their patties. With the Brie, Apple, and crisp bacon it was perfect. Do this place. read more

Great food, great atmosphere, & great people working here. Honestly, it can be pricey but duh/ good because it should be. If you're trying to treat yourself or someone special. You can tell the moment you see your food or taste it, that it isn't a sports bar type restaurant. & I know the owner/ chief actually takes pride in what is being served. It's apparent from the dishes he serves. Only downside side is the customers who go here tend to be people who give Amherst a bad name. The snobby people who you may see being rude to the waitress because someone asked for ketchup on the side and the waitress hasn't brought it out yet. Just know the people working at Coles are not anything like some of the people who dine here & think they can be rude to waitresses, because they believe their more important than others due to their money. Burgers were amazing as well as their seasoned shoestring fries with a homemade dipping sauce!

First of all, I was extremely annoyed at how good everything sounded on the menu. It was terribly difficult to choose something. Good beer list, their cocktails were creative. We started with the baked goat cheese and sausage with mustard. Both were lovely. The cheese was perfectly toasted and the tomato sauce was a great accompaniment. The sausage was definitely made in house, both mustards complimented it well. I had the red dragon burger, my wife had the croque madam, and my mother the house burger. We all enjoyed our entrees. The fries were really well seasoned and came with a delicious aioli. The burger was perfectly cooked and the meat blend was great, not overly greasy. The madame was giant, and the mornay was well done, velvety and smooth. No complaints about the food at all. Overall, the portion sizes were large for the price. A great value, will definitely come back when I'm in town. Service was also good. Our waiter was Spencer who was friendly and attentive. read more

Went on a whim as we were huge fans of the previous restaurant located here. The menu is not very extensive. To be honest there were only maybe three entrees I would try. However, the meal I did have, the Flat Iron Steak, was amazing! The steak was so tender and seasoned perfectly. Had the chocolate cake for dessert.
