We've been going to Colonial Cafes for years and always enjoy it. This one is right across from my office, so whenever we have a chance out team loves to have lunch here. The food is always good and so much to choose from. The service is always fast and friendly. This is my favorite place in town!! Their strawberry lemonade with strawberry pieces are delicious. We usually start with the sampler platter or the nachos both which are delicious. Their meatloaf is to die for!! It's the perfect combination of texture and flavor you want in it. My husbands favorite is the pulled pork mac and cheese which is super creamy the meat on top makes it a great pair. But this point our meal we are really full so we usually take part of the main course home since it makes the perfect leftover meal later and order some dessert. If you are looking for a great ice cream this is the place. Anything from the kids sundaes to the kitchen sink are delicious. We have tried it all. My personal favorite is the Oreo with peanut butter shake so I can take it with me or the kitchen sink when I was able to pace myself through the meal. I have been eating here since I can remember and I still love it. Service is always friendly and management is great, anytime we have a problem they are very prompt in making it right. Disappointed,I always go here with a friend and it has been great. Recently I called to make a reservation for a party of 11, celebrating a birthday (we wanted to do breakfast as many were leaving out of town right after that). Their "rule" is no reservations before 2:00 p.m. on Sundays, we could just come and hope to get seated or wait. With 11 coming that didn't make sense to me, and I know that is their busy time but I was guaranteeing 11. I am local, live in St. Charles, so again disappointed. But I called Mother's Pancake house in St. Charles and they said no problem "they got me" and instantly made the reservation. It was a wonderful experience, they were customer oriented and prepared for us. Guess we all know where I will be going for breakfast from now on. read more

Great homey small diner and ice cream bar! My dad loves coming here with me! He loves the cinnamon ice cream since it reminds him of Costa Rica and he can't find anything more similar anywhere else. We love colonial and the waiters are all great! Hands down the best one is Brie! We love when she's our waitress because she is pleasant and very friendly. Eesh what is going on here? We came for breakfast and the menu was 1/5 what it used to be - just a handful of choices and all of which were bland things I could make at home. My coffee cup tasted salty, water tasted soapy, kids plates for my small children came scalding hot, there was a hair under my pancake, our server's phone rang loudly the whole time we were ordering, he never came back to check on us and then stood over my shoulder watching while I signed the check and paid for the tip, high chair was dirty with a broken buckle, all around a very meh experience. With the amount of breakfast competition in the area, it's no wonder it was empty in there even on a Saturday! Hope they can turn the ship back around over there, because we used to enjoy it. read more

Good ole Colonial Cafe. This place holds so many memories for me, as I have been coming to this exact location since I was a toddler. 20 years later, my mother and I still come to this cafe almost weekly. For dinner and/or ice cream. The food is and has always been delicious ! I have tried numerous items from the menu and honestly never had anything that didn't taste great. Unfortunately, I do still have a few complaints though. My main one being the service they provide. It's always hit or miss with the waitresses. We either get an extremely sweet girl or one who seems as though she hates her job. And trust me, she makes it known. It makes for a very unpleasant dinner as well, which leaves my mother and I feeling uncomfortable and as if we are a burden to them. Customers should never ever have to feel like that! Also, the prices on the menu continue to climb higher and higher. I get that they have made a lot of renovations and added new items to the menu, but $10 for a sandwich & handful of fries at a little cafe is outrageous. I suggest either increasing the food portions or lowering the prices. read more

Went to Colonial Cafe in St. Charles for the first time recently. It was clean and modern looking. Great staff who were patient ... the menu has so many delicious choices, it can take a while. I ordered a mac n cheese with pulled pork and onion straws on top. It was so good. I am already craving it again! The cheese is heavenly and the pulled pork is divine. To whoever is managing this location...it doesn't do a bit of good for employees to put a mask on their faces if it isn't covering their mouth and nose. I watched multiple staff members walk around with masks pulled down below their noses. One of whom prepped the milkshakes I ordered, which went directly in the trash when I returned to my office. I order from this location regularly, but not any more. This location serves quite a few senior citizens in the area, a group particularly at risk during this pandemic. Shame on you. read more

Never been here before, but I don't think I will be coming back.... I was thinking about coming back for that sink dessert....but after the breakfast I had last weekend....NO THANKS! So I had a skillet, and the only good thing was that the menu said 2 eggs but it came with 4....but the portion for the price was overwhelmingly disappointing. I have never had a skillet where you can see the bottom of the skillet....Yes, thank you for the 2 extra eggs but what happened to my other half of the skillet!? I asked for Texas toast and I got English muffins instead, but when I had said something to the server, she brought me the Texas toast....and then I noticed something....There were 2 slices cut in half diagonally...so naturally I should have had top left pieces and bottom right pieces. What did I have? 1 top left and 3 bottom right pieces, and 3 of the halves were burnt and the one half was barely toasted....the burnt pieces were hard as a rock on the outer edges but soggy like oat meal on the inside. I am pretty sure that these toasts were reused....so like any good person would do, I ripped my bread apart in tiny pieces so that they can't reuse it for someone else. I've heard of breakfast places doing this but to have it literally shoved in your face....UGH so gross.... read more

My family moved to St Charles in 1973; we have been going to Colonial since we were kids. It has always been a place to count on the food as well as the service. Up until last weekend, that is... I took my 81 yr old father there for a burger, and he ordered the burger with fries, and noticed the onion rings which we have had many times before. He asked for a side of onion rings, which was listed in the sides for $1.99 + a .79 cent up charge. The waitress asked if "we would like them brought before the food, like an appetizer". Dad says sure and I order the same. The food comes and is great, until we get the bill: $7.19 for each order of onion rings, or $14+ in onion rings!!!! Yes, the portion was nice but not excessive. When I asked the waitress about this she said we "ordered the appetizer". A review of the menu showed no such appetizer, only the side orders of onion rings for $2.78 each. I asked how they could charge this when the menu has no such item, suggesting their POS system was off. The waitress said she could get the manager, so I ask that she does so. His reply was that he could "take one of them off", apologizing in the process. I tell him that I would still be getting overcharged, if by less than $2. The manager blamed it on "corporate" but refused to charge the right amount (2x $2.78), all the while blaming "corporate". This all happened 12/6/14, and sadly I will no longer spend money here. It is the principle of the matter. If I could put no stars, I would. Disappointing... read more

It wasn't my best meal there lately. Over the years Colonial was a reliable choice for breakfast. It seems to have taken a downward turn. A month ago I had a so so breakfast. Last week when I went with a friend I ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich. The croissant was falling apart. I suspect it was a few days old. The eggs were on the cold side and the sausage patty was like a hockey puck. It seems as though it was sitting on the grill for awhile to stay warm until the next customer ordered one. My friend thought the same of his sausage patty that he ordered with his eggs that he said were on the cold side as well. On the plus side, the coffee was good. read more

The food and selections are very good. However, I do not recommend this restaurant if you are on a tight schedule over a lunch hour. They cater to the retired population and their service is extremely slow. I've eaten here for lunch with a friend 3 times now and almost every time we've had to hunt down our waitress to come back to take our order or ask if we could get our soup or something. Even tried telling them on our arrival that we only have a limited lunch hour and they don't move any faster. Unfortunately we'll have to cross this one off of our lunch list. read more

Not necessarily a great ambiance - but I am in from out of town and was hungry. It kind of reminded me of a Denny's. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase: The service was very good; and their Mac & Cheese was excellent. I started with a bowl of French Onion soup which was pretty poor (too much beef broth base). My friend had the lobster roll - warning: don;t eat seafood in a place that's miles from the shore. It was very poor, and not in a croissant that the waitress said it would be in. I have been visiting Colonial Ice Cream since I was a kid. There were 4 persons in our party and we stopped to eat at your restaurant at 1625 E. Main St. St. Charles, IL. The food was horrible! One dish was the meatloaf. It was a lump of grease that appeared to be sitting in a warmer for a long time. Second dish was a cheese burger. It was burnt and greasy. Terrible tasting. 3rd dish was the Pot Roast dinner. Appeared dried out, and burnt. The mash potato's were lumpy and not properly cooked. Would not patronize this establishment again. read more

Please bring back the Huevos Rancheros! I always feel a bit disappointed when the menu changes because our family loves this place. When the Huevos Rancheros was missing from the menu, we felt like a staple on the menu was a mistake. The servers always raved about it and how numerous people love this dish. There are a few Colonial Cafes around the St. Charles area. This location is on Rt 64/Main St. & Tyler Rd. Small parking lot, but the inside of the restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside! Several different rooms, nice place to have a get together with the family, or a meeting. read more

Best corn beef skillets! Breakfast or ice cream are the only two things I come here for. They have got the breakfast thing down and they have been in the same location I think sense the 60's. I grew up going to Colonial a lot as a kid. My mom used to take my brother and me on the "kids eat free" nights, and I remember loving the clown and balloons. I also frequented Colonial quite a bit as a middle schooler and high schooler...we mainly went for the ice cream and a place to hang out. To this day, the PBF Chipper is still one of my favorite sundaes! Peanut butter, hot fudge, and a whole Reese's cup...yum!!! I recently revisited Colonial for breakfast with my family. Although it's nothing fancy, the menu offers lots of good options--including healthy choices. Additionally, the prices are very reasonable, especially compared to the more upscale breakfast spots. The servers are very friendly and accommodating--they made us feel right at home and were nice about answering all of our questions and making recommendations. I ordered a standard breakfast of eggs and toast-and they let me sub fruit for hash browns without an additional charge. I always appreciate that! To sum it up, the food is nothing special, but it does the trick when you want a standard, reasonably priced meal out. read more
