This is going to be a fairly long review, but hang in there, all will be revealed. I am the kind of girl that likes variety in my food. If I have a sandwich I have to have chips with it. Pizza always has to have salad with it. When I entered Comella's there was a sign. The sign said, a 1/2 sandwich, side salad and a drink $6. I think "wow, that's a good deal! Problem is, I am a vegetarian, and surprisingly two out the six $6 deals were meatless, I just wasn't in the mood. That's totally my bad, and you will see why. I wanted pizza. I had seen in the yelp reviews, and on their menu, that the cheese pizza was only $6. I asked the teenager at the counter what size the pizzas come in. One size she says. Ok then, I'm getting a large pizza then. But now remember, I like variety in my food. So I need a salad. The little sign in front of me clearly says that they have a small salad. This is what I want. She says that there is only one size salad. I told her I wanted the salad on the sign. Whatever. And the salad dressings were weird. I forget what they were, but they were almost like salad dressings you would see on a gourmet menu. So I get the salad, pizza, and a Nantucket nectar lemonade. This is when she says to me "$14" me: FOURTEEN DOLLARS??? I'm sorry to raise my voice. The pizza was $6 which is why I came here. What could cost $14? her: The salad was $6 and the lemonade was $2.50 Remember that sign? The one with the entire meal for $6 that included a half a sandwich AND a salad? The one I should have eaten? Are they giving food away during that deal? Do the laws of food costs and supply and demand not apply for that meal? Why is the same salad $6 otherwise FOR ICEBERG LETTUCE with no cheese on it or anything? So I guess what I am trying to say is, you're paying more money in the long run if you buy anything other than the cheese pizza. Also, the pizza was just....ok. Not awesome...just ok. read more

Been here several times and think the place is great. I have tried many things from "messes" to pizza and ravioli and chicken parm(sandwich) -Try a mess- signature plates with a nice sauce on pasta and several choices to go on top(veal, sausage, meatballs etc etc) - 5$ cheese is great for kids- I think it is ok for the price but I desire more on top if I am ordering pizza. - Veggie ravioli, eggplant or mushroom are all good. We once ordered the veggie and recieved an eggplant and they let us keep it and brought the correct one in short time. - They have peroni and harpoon on tap( and one other I can't remember) and some wine choices. *Wish they would move the menu away from the door as it causes some traffic flow issues at times. * perhaps a couple more draught beer choices. Nice place all around. Park out back but you can't walk through to the lot, must go though another shop. read more

Comella's is our go-to Pizza/Italian take-out place in the area. We've never dined-in so I can't speak to that experience. We love the "messes" and always get a side of meatballs (which are pretty tasty). They also make an amazing caesar salad! (Caesar salad without chicken, in my opinion is best.) We've also ordered a few different kinds of pizzas and they have always been good. You really can't go wrong with $5 cheese pizzas, too. We order perhaps 2-3 times a month and always get awesome food. read more

For take-out it's wonderful. The food is always good. That would be 4 stars. For eat-in, it was terrible. It's a nice clean place, but on the night we went, it was staffed only by two young girls with attitude. Long story short, they were out of broccoli on the night we went. The menu is a chalkboard. Maybe an eraser or note would help the ordering process, instead of waiting until we order to tell us there was no broccoli. Gets worse. After all the food is delivered to the table, the girl tells me my item was also not available, and I should pick something else from the chalkboard of equal value as a substitute. I did not want something of equal value, I wanted to want my now third choice for dinner to be something I wanted. They were pissed I asked them to void the 'not available' item and charge me for the item I wanted. Other customers were laughing at this and said things like "good luck" to me. My party members were appalled. However, the food was terrific, and I found the poor service laughable. I would definitely go back. For take-out. read more

When I'm craving Italian American comfort food, I come here. The Nephew's Mess (eggplant with either meatball or sausage) turned out to be THREE meals for me! The food here is very tasty. I like the flavor of the red sauce, and the meatballs are good. The things that I don't care for are the garlic bread which is somewhat soggy and not crisp. It comes out wrapped in foil. I don't know if that's how they heat it up or if they wrap it up like that when customers order it. The problem is that the heat generated inside the foil turns into steam, creating moisture, thus making the garlic bread soggy. Also, while they offer an amazing $5 pizza deal, I think the pizza tastes like cardboard. It's got to be the cheapest grade of cheese and flour used to make that pizza. It's just tasteless to me. After not going here for a very long time we thought we would try it again hoping for better results. I ordered a BLT sub seems simple enough right? What I recieved was a BLT sandwich on some kind of whole wheat toasted stale bread that when touched literally fell apart because its stale with may 5 small peices of lettuce and this disgusting sandwich which was thrown away cost 8.65 a real bargain smh. Great Italian take-out spot! I'm pissed it took me a year to discover this place as I live pretty close. No surprise this place has a bunch of locations, as they truly understand what it takes to be successful in the harsh restaurant industry. It's certainly not rocket science but many places continue to strikeout. Comella's consistently offers good food, good portions, clean/inviting atmosphere, all at a great price. I first ordered the red's mess and it reminded me of something my mother/grandmother would make. The red sauce here is good and tasty, not great, but better than many take-out places. I also got a large cheese pizza just because it was $5 and it was decent. Absolutely worth $5 ! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for good and hearty Italian takeout at a killer price. I have come here a lot with my family. Most of the time we get their cheese pizza. The price for a plain cheese pizza is practically unbeatable. I mean, 6 BUCKS for A WHOLE PIZZA? You can't even beat that! Don't bother going to Papa Gino's or Domino's or whatever other pizza chain there is THIS IS AN EXTREMELY GOOD DEAL JUST FOR A PIZZA. Some other things... :P Get their Chicken Parm, its really good with crispy chicken and homemade marinara sauce. An update: we still go, because it is walking distance from our house. But... the pizza has seen a pretty impressive boost in cost such that they're competing with the other *three* pizza places in downtown for our business. The five stars is based on the quality of the food compared to the price. $5 for a good, solid pizza? Yeah, that's five stars in my book. I usually just get pizza or a sausage and meatball mess but both those and everything else I've gotten here have been average to very good. For the prices, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find something this good anywhere. Generally they are pretty quick--15-20 minutes for a pizza or two--but occasionally, not always, on Friday nights it can be as much as a 40 minute wait. Other than that it's good. I just ordered two pizza's and they said it would be 15 minutes, at two in the afternoon on Patriots Day/Boston Marathon day. One other thing: The people who answer the phone and take your order always seem to want to get off the phone quickly; you feel rushed when placing your order. This isn't really much of a complaint but it's interesting to not that I just ordered two pizza's over the phone and the phone call lasted only 14 seconds. And as at least one other user has said: THEY DO NOT DELIVER EXCEPT FOR LARGE, $150+, CATERING ORDERS. read more

The chicken parm and the meatball are both great. The Caesar salad is pretty standard but pretty good. The lunch special (1/2 sandwich, small salad and drink) for under $7 is the best deal in town by far. Places in the Alewife/Belmont area are easily $10+ for any similar type lunch. Comella's serves home style Italian food (not gourmet) with an emphasis on red sauce. I gave them a high rating because their food is fresh, high quality, and tastes homemade. Soups, salads, subs, pizza, apps, pasta dishes have all been surprisingly good and consistent. Their food is several notches better than a typical pizza shop. The portions are huge and I can get two and sometimes three meals from an entrée. The food is on the heavy side, so a little goes a long way. A large cheese pizza is around six bucks. The restaurant does have teens working there, but they seem to be well trained. I have been their dozens of times and never had a single service issue. In three attempts of trying to order from there, they got the food wrong twice (with no apology) and hung up on me the last time (after phone rang for a while, I heard someone pick up the phone and immediately hang it up). Great buffalo chicken pizza a.k.a. the Olivia Rose. My only question - how do I get to pay in the VIP line? You know, the one where the guy, apparently a very important doctor, got served before me? Not just me but the other two people waiting for 5 to 10 minutes. In walks Dr. DBag and poof! "What can we do for you Dr. DB?" I got a pick up order thinking I'd save a lot of time. I was told that I would have to wait in the same line for ordering, which ended up being a good 15 minutes just to be told it wasn't ready at the time I specified I would pick up the pizza. The pizza is okay for the money, but definitely going to splurge next time on quality pizza and better customer service. read more

I used to love the cheese pizza here. Unfortunately recently, they keep just reheating the pizza. It is burned and hard as a rock. Very disappointed. Whole pizzas should never be reheated. I hope this changes as there are other options and they are not the only choice in town. read more

What has happened to comellas? We have been coming for years Katie used to be the manager she did a fantastic job never an issue and if there was she delt with it like a professional. The last several months have been terrible customer service seems a lost art. We had stopped coming at all for a long time and decided to try again in the hopes things were better so disappointed we won't be back soon. read more

I think Comella's is ok for lunch, but don't use a credit/debit card! I did for 2 orders on the same day and both posted to my account for $1 more than I had signed for....filled out a contact form at the Comella's website, but haven't heard back and couldn't find any other way to contact their headquarters. I was really looking forward to trying Comella's and wasn't disappointed. I treid the Red's mess - the chicken parm and meatball were excellent, though it had little sausage. We also tried the Nephew mess - eggplant was good, but also had little sausage. The shrimp alfredo was very good. The chicken parm sub was ok, but the eggplant parm sub was excellent. My daugter said the tirimasu was very good. Prices are reasonalble and the food was very good overall. I'll be back to try some new combos for sure!!! read more

This place is fine for bargain basement pizza but that is it. Otherwise it is a disgrace to Italian food. Think McDonald's but with pasta. I'm sure they are printing money but fairly shameful food. Disappointed. Ordered to go for lunch: 1.Chicken Parmasiana with pasta: First complaint is that the chicken's dry, tasteless, not marinated. Breading not tasty, soggy and fell off the chicken. So I'm driving home from a wedding where the food was not that good and I drove through Belmont center and spotted Comella's Italian Restaurant. It was something about the look of the building that made me double back and give it a try. Good food is essential when planning to watch a Patriots game. Very extensive menu, impressive decor, friendly staff, but this is take out so let's get to the food. Large menu hanging on the wall and so many things I thought I would like, but for some reason my eyes kept wandering to the listings called "Mess". So I asked "explain the mess to me". Ziti with sauce and cheese and a variety of other elements depening on what you choose. So options were single serving, half a bucket or full bucket. I was by myself but no red blooded American male ever passes up the opportunity to order something in a bucket. (please note disappointing look on my face when order came in a pan and not a bucket) Before I grade the food, note to management : When you are charging somebody $24.99 for pasta, which is very reasonable in this case because it feeds 4 people, YOU NEED TO INCLUDE BREAD !! . I'm not italian but I know my italian paisons need to dip the bread in the sauce. That was my first reaction, the pan was flat, no bucket ?? no bread ?? This better be a good mess. Well I must say I was very impressed with the food. The only thing I know better than chinese food is meatballs and these meatballs were outstanding. I got "The Mess" with meatballs and sausages. It was so good I am eating it again today for lunch. One other big plus is you can have a beer or wine at the bar while you wait for your order. Pizza is really cheap and it is good for the price. 5$ you can't beat that deal. It is 5$ for the plain classic cheese only. The service is sub par as Also ordered the shrimp scampi with fuselli. I specifically asked for no cheese on top and when it came out it did have cheese, I'm not the type of person to send food back over something that marginal but it is annoying. I understand mistakes are made even thought it's not the first time it's happened here. i waivered between 2 and 3 stars. I went with 3 stars because, when I asked myself, can you find a better pizza and eggplant sandwich for the price, the answer is probably not. You get what you paid for: inexpensive Italian food. It's tasty for what it is. My only complaint is that the two times I've had the eggplant, it had the faint flavor of undercooked flour. I don't understand how that can even happen, given that the eggplant is soft and cooked all the way through. Who has a really good eggplant sub in the area? I can't seem to find one.... read more

We live in Belmont and often going by this place, so we decided to give it a try. Well, we tried and we think once is enough. Sub par ingredients, carelessly prepared dough, boring topping choices... We added olives as topping and what we got was something looked like a whole can of grocery store canned olives dumped on top of a pizza. Italian food that is home cooked and made fresh. This great location in Belmont makes then an affordable option on Pizza night. They have $5.00 pizzas that taste like $10.00. I like that they bring food out to you table, it's a nice touch. I am a fan of the chicken parm and the Mess. Overall the place is fast very clean and has a nice feel to it.
