Yelp gives this place four stars. I give this place four stars. I give Northender's category five stars. Northender is just like 380 places all over the Boston Area. And I love them all. * * * Northender is an East Coast Sub Shop. Sub shops have pizza too. Pizza is good all over the country. Subs are NOT good all over the country. They are usually only good only in the Northeast. Sub shops in Texas are godawful. Sub shops in Michigan and Wisconsin are no great shakes. So when I go to Boston or Connecticut or Rhode Island or -Hallelujah - Philadelphia ... I go out of my way to get at least one real deal sub. One real deal sub and I am happy. If on two days, I can get two real deal subs, I am twice as happy. * * * Most East Coast sub shops are fine. There may be some place that has legendary three standard deviations above the mean subs. I have yet to find one. There is probably a tail end of terrible East Coast sub shops at the bottom end of the distribution. If I have eaten at one, I have repressed the memory. * * * The Northender is controversial. Some Yelpers hate it. Others love it. My local hosts love it. What I had is outstanding. So I am proudly in the pro-Northender camp. Because sub shops also do pizzas and Italian main dish entrees - there may or may not be issues with the other two thirds of the menu. But on subs - these folks are just fine and dandy. I had a meatball parmigiana sub. Those are always good. Even mediocre places in Texas with their cold cuts coming straight from Sysco can sometimes manage a decent meatball sub. * * * Northender lets you get hot grilled green peppers on your meatball sub. Texas has never heard of such a thing. Hot grilled green peppers on any kind of a parmigiana sub? Take plug. Insert into electric socket. All the lights come on. I was bright and shiny for the rest of the day. (And that rest of the day involved a long and miserable trip through Logan airport. I needed that sub as a bright spot on a day that was going to be dreariness up the snoot.) * * * Are the subs in Arlington better or worse than the subs in Lexington, or in Dedham, or in Marblehead or in Southie? I really couldn't tell you. But certain pleasures are like chocolate. They are good unless they are proven otherwise. * * * How are Northenders salads, or the lasagnas of the day or their house special pizza? I have no idea. But just keep those sub sandwiches coming. A friend raved about the pizza, so we happily gave it a try. The home delivery via Slice was on time. The pizza was warm but not hot. During my first bite I bit into a black olive pit. I called to tell them about it, but the person who answered the phone did not understand what I was saying. Otherwise, the cheese was not great and overall pizza was okay, but not worth ordering twice. read more

Although we are giving it 3 stars, it really merits 3.5 stars and has the potential to be 4 stars. I can see where it could deserve 4 stars. Let me explain. We got the veal parmigiana dinner and buffalo salad. The veal Parm dinner was very good, just a little bit cold. We may have waited too long to pick it up. The veal park itself was quite tasty and it was real veal as it said in the menu. As for buffalo salad, the chicken was really good, but a bit too much onion. The portion size for both was generous. This is a small little takeout place with a couple tables, but the people working there are nice. Btw, don't believe the price online, which is not the real price. 2.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to a three because the food was tasty. Why a 2.5 if the food was good? I don't like when restaurants are being cheap with their ingredients and their effort while raising prices. Let me share what we ordered. We had chicken Alfredo and broccoli with pasta, buffalo chicken cutlets, and a couple of salads. The Alfredo was pretty good and I liked the curly pasta. It held the sauce well. The buffalo chicken cutlets were good, but I prefer boneless buffalo wings. In any case, the cutlets were nice and tender and flavorful. I would get them again. The salads were good, but what bothers me is when staff gets lazy and they don't cut the ingredients properly. The tomatoes in the Greek salad were massive. Who wants to eat tomatoes that are the size of half an apple? If I have to cut the ingredients myself, then I'll make the salad at home. Also, they throw in junk pieces of lettuce. Take a look at my pictures to see what I mean. That bothers me a lot. I'm paying good money during a recession and they threw in lettuce stumps to take up space in the container. I don't appreciate that at all. Be honest with your customers and give them what they pay for. Not ingredients that they have to throw away. This is not OK. Ever. Prices are higher than they were in recent times. Normal for most restaurants these days. Food was mostly good, but it really bothers me that they are not being honest with their customers right now. Businesses that cheat during times like these don't last for very long. Street parking is reasonable. This is a cafeteria style pizza and sub shop that serves pasta and salads as well. read more

I love this store, I haven't had much of their products so I can't review it by their menu and products overall, BUT! I'm a regular there, and I can vouch for their Steak Bomb Sub, I ask always to add mayo lettuce and tomato and to have it toasted. It's the BEST STEAK BOMB SUB in town. I probably should try other items in their menu, but as soon as I walk in all my stomach wants is their BEST STEAK BOMB SUB hahahaha. I can't stress how much their BEST STEAK BOMB SUB is good. Besides that, their customer service is friendly, nice and simple and I like that. People shouldn't need to be overly nice to customers just because they're customers, people who expect service like that as if they're some kind of royalty should go eat in their castles instead. These employees are very nice and very hardworking, never have I had a problem with them. The environment is nice, it would be good to have some air conditioning there bc during summer days it gets really hot in there but it's understandable, the place would probably have to close for renovations, then there's loss of revenue, they gotta pay rent for the space, and instead of improving something they would sink in debt instead. Hopefully they can receive the love and attention they deserve, and have lots of customers because it's a very good place with good food and very good people! read more

Somehow pasta and red sauce isn't what I'm craving in 80 degree weather and humidity, but "somebody" wanted to show off his wine pairing skills and must only know how to pair wine with Italian food. Rounding up from a 4.5. They give a 5% discount for cash. I was about $1.75 short on cash, gave guy my debit card and he let me have it for what I had in my wallet which was closer to a 10% discount. Very cool. I took Kelly B's suggestion and I got the chicken wings. They were so much better than the chicken wings I got last week from a sit down place last week on wings night! Between that and the sub I got, I had trouble eating even half the sub and eventually gave up trying and took half home with me. It will be dinner tonight. The only issue I had, besides the minor irritant of every male customer being called boss, was the fan that was right behind my seat. There was something attached to the fan blowing in the breeze. It turned out to be one of those greasy dust things, more than an inch long that you see in fans if they been kept in storage for the winter. So I waited until there were no other customers and said something to the guy. He told me they don't usually use the fan and the "maintenance guy" was out today for a medical appointment so he ca,e in early today to clean and he missed it. Okay, that can happen. But yesterday and the day before was in the 90s. I get the feeling this place doesn't have central air otherwise they wouldn't need the fan. And no one thought to clean it? My inner Gordon Ramsay was screaming. This thing hasn't been cleaned in at least a year. And as someone with respiratory issues, I a, sensitive to the fact there could be customers that could get sick from that. I even mentioned that I was lucky I was wearing a mask. He made no effort to clean it or have someone else do it. He made no comment like "we will clean it after you leave" or some such thing. Nope. And all I could think of was Gordon Ramsay inspecting their walk ins and stoves and finding grease build up, floors that haven't been swept in weeks, etc. I'm in no rush to go back until I know it's been cleaned. read more

We got pizza from here weekly for a few months, but I'm not sure what has happened lately. It must be a new owner or new management, but the quality has dropped and they've tried to scam us three times now. We usually prepay for our order prior to delivery to avoid having to come up with enough cash for our families order. The last three times we've ordered we've never gotten our food and have had to drive to the restaurant in person to fight for our money back. The someone purporting to be a delivery driver claimed they couldn't find our street, that they didn't have a gps, and couldn't ask for directions because they only spoke Portuguese. The second time they claimed to be running two hours behind schedule, after telling us our food would be delivered in 30 minutes, and the third time they claimed they lost our order. I strolled in here because I was starving after doing so many errands and it's next to the UPS & USPS stores. I was so surprised about how amazing the food taste and quality is here. I also really appreciate how incredibly kind the cashier was taking my order. She answered all my questions about ingredient swap so kind and so informative. It's so rare I have a nice experience with a pizza shop cashier, I really appreciated her amazing customer service. The cashier went above and beyond to let me know great sides I can add into my Buffalo chicken wrap. Just so friendly and nice. This was honestly the best Buffalo chicken wrap I've ever had. Their chicken tastes amazing!!! They stuff the wraps with a good amount of chicken and aren't cheap on the good ingredients at al I also really appreciated that the seating are booths and they are so comfortable. They also had a tv playing the news and the volume was just perfect (not piercingly loud but good enough that I could hear it) I was also excited to see they offer chili (for $6.95) and clam chowder ($5.50) I can't wait to come back and try it on my next visit. A clear sign of how great this hidden gem is that during my dine in timing of eating my wrap the turn over of customers they got was nonstop with pick up orders. We called on a Friday late afternoon (like 4:30pm) to order 3 pizzas to be delivered at 5:30. Shortly there after, called back to add 1 more pizza. By 6:15, still no pizza, and like our friends, live 4 min away by car. We called to get status and said driver on way and was late because of change to our order and they were so busy. Total BS excuses. You are a pizza shop on a Friday. You should be able to handle busy. Especially when given an hour to plan for delivery! When driver did show up, had only 3 pizzas and not 4. Called to complain and not an apology at all or offer to credit at least 1 pizza. Will never, ever, make this mistake again. read more

Northender was a good experience for me. So far I've only got pasta and chicken parm from them. I liked both dishes. Each of them was good for two three meals. For the pasta, the owner was so kind and willing to make my customized, off-the-menu dish. After maybe three minutes into the hot, fresh, delicious dinner, I had to call them right away to thank them again and let them know how much I appreciated it. Many places cook tasty food, yet it is quite special when the food tastes like someone cares about it and about you. Like something they would make for their own loved ones. Northender's chicken parm was also great. The tomato sauce was so fresh with just the right amount of tang and seasoning, they can seriously sell that sauce by the jar. The chicken had a great texture and taste, the coating was just right: not too thin, not too thick, did not fall off from the meat at all. I have not yet tried the pizza (so far we've been quite loyal to Andrina's.) I'll give that a try at some point. read more

I eat here a couple times a month, originally owing to its proximity and quality of service. Northender Italian Kitchen serves my occasional desire for delivery and fast Italian food with quality a step above a typical hot-sub/pizza shop. The service is polite and helpful if dining in and, if you're like me, reasonably speedy for delivery. I've had a number of their offerings but typically pick up a hot sub and a side. The sandwiches are generously portioned and tasty and the sides are fresh, warm and well-textured for your typical french-fry/onion-ring/wings-type fare. Despite the surfeit of similar Italian kitchens in the area I find myself returning the Northender and look forward to enjoying it again. read more

We ordered from Northender for the first time recently. As others have said, the chicken Parmesan is great and a huge serving (4 pieces) for $6.95. Their sauce is delicious-- very tomato-y, a little sweet and not super thick. I really liked the pizza crust and will try a different pizza next time. I ordered the Mediterranean and just didn't enjoy the combination. That's my issue though, not the restaurant's. My husband picked up our food and said the woman working at the front was very friendly. Happy to have such a good place so close to me! read more

For all the nights we've been too tired to make dinner, the Northender Italian Kitchen was there to save us from a case of h-anger. Food is decent, quantity is enormous, and preparation is quick. What can the Northender do better? A couple of things: - If we order a large box of fries, fill the box to the top. The box we got tonight was only half full, with a container of ketchup making up the difference. - Figure out a way to package pasta for ease of access. While I appreciate the two layers of plastic wrap around each container, half melted plastic is never fun to remove from my meal, especially if I'm on the verge of being hangry. Of course, there's always room to improve. Still won't stop us from ordering takeout here! read more

I live nearby and went to the thai place down the street and tried to order takeout. After sitting there for 10 minutes and realizing they never placed my order I left and started walking to another place down the street. I walked by this place and figured I'd give it a shot. I ordered an Italian sub and it was ready in 10 minutes. When I got home to eat it, it was delicious! The oil had seeped out of it and into the tray it came in so the bottom was a big soggy but the taste made up for it. I'm somewhat of an Italian sun snob, and this was the best I'd had in a long time. While I was ordering I saw a couple receive their in-house order of chicken parm and couldn't help but wish I got that, based off of appearance alone. So the next night I returned, and did just that. I had a chat with the owner and he told me he's been in the business for over 15 years in Concord, and this is his second location. There is a reason he is successful enough to open a second location. The chicken parm came and it was just as fantastic as the Italian sub. Fresh bread, fresh chicken, tasty sauce, and a great portion size. They use all fresh ingredients. Nothing is frozen. I can't wait to come back and try the pizza. Came here after reading yelp reviews. Got the Italian sub and chicken parm. The Italian sub was really delicious! Scarfed down half the sub on the car ride home. It tasted so fresh and light. Don't wait to eat it because the other half got a little soggy (only on the bottom) from the dressing on the way back. Still delicious though, wish I had more of that dressing to dip it in! So I wasn't clear what kind of chicken parm to order and got the pasta. Honestly, I was not gung-ho about the pasta, but the chicken was so moist and delicious! I could eat 5 pieces even after having the italian sub. Fyi, it only comes with 2 pieces. Definitely want to try this as a sub next time. Pasta also came with bread on the side. This restaurant felt like a mom-and-pop kind of place even though this is the second location. Girl at the counter was super friendly and even the customers too. I would come back again. read more
