I would like to say this was an unusually bad experience. I've come here several times and ordered omelettes. This is quick and easy food. Today I brought someone with me and the service was terrible. My soup spoon was dirty and I had to wait over 5 min for a new spoon because the waitress was moving so quickly to get to something else. My food sat for a very long time at the kitchen area that my fries came cold. I had a sandwich so I'm not sure why such a long wait. When the food came I asked for the manager and the waitress removed the food. Who asked her to do that. The manager came and offered no apology and said he would have the food heated. When you think about quality of food, quantity of food, and price, Commander hits at least 4 stars. I'm sure not much has changed since my mom was growing up in Munster and coming here in the 60s. There were so many options that looked appetizing, and I'm sure even more options would look appetizing if this was a hangover breakfast/brunch :) We walked right in on a Saturday morning around 9:30/10 with no wait for a table. Water and coffee were offered right away, but we stuck with just water. That's actually the source of my main complaint...the water glasses were like kiddie glasses, and I drink a TON of water, so was finished with my glass in less than 5 minutes. I saw our waitress come out with the pot of coffee and fill up the same two tables' mugs at least 5 times (no exaggeration) before I could even get her eye contact to request more water. Besides that minor annoyance, the food came out quickly and really hit the spot. I had the spinach & feta omelette with hash browns and toast, and the manfriend had the french toast. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, especially for breakfast, but the bite he let me try was realllllly delish. We both ate, and were stuffed, for $17. Add a diet coke and gratuity and you have a $23 breakfast - not a bad deal. We'll give it another try and hope for a little more attentive service. read more

Always a great breakfast place in Munster. The staff is friendly and they always get you in and out in less than an hour. The food itself is always consistent, the lemon rice soup is the best around. I love being able to come in town and get a quality breakfast each and every time. read more

Some foods like the hot open face turkey are okay but most of the kids items are gross, especially the Chicken tenders which are fried to the point of cardboard. Surprisingly not too bad. Restaurant was clean and populated mainly by retirees. Service off the bat wasn't great but our waitress warmed up after a few minutes (I guess it was pretty busy). Food came INSANELY fast and was plenty hot. I had the Denver omelette, it was tasty with big chunks of peppers and onions. My girlfriend had the Belgian waffle. She thoroughly enjoyed it. Went in to order lemon rice soup. Paid the bill and waited. A gentleman walks in after me orders the exact same thing and pays. They bring him his soup and out the door he goes. Here I stand waiting. No other patrons around. I finally asked the cashier what happened to my order as I placed it before the other gentleman even walked in the restaurant. This question was met with hostility from a blonde waitress with numerous piercings in her ear. She stomped back got my order mumbling the whole time that this wasn't her order. I paid $8.00 for soup. I wasn't offered any rolls (although I clearly heard her ask him if he wanted some) and didn't even receive so much as a cracker with the soup. I'm done with Commander. Sometimes visiting a place once is enough and it might not be fair to judge them on there lunch or dinner menu from a breakfast experience but it was just that bad that I would never venture wasting a second trip. Slow service from a rude and thankless waitress on a early morning trip. I guess if I was a senior out to grab a cup of coffee or wanted to sit around and BS with the dozen or so 80 yr olds in there they might have treated us a little better? How can you mess up two eggs over easy with hash browns and toast? only to bring me out a burnt waffle that I ordered on the side along with taking 30 min to get it all to the table dispite the fact that we were the only two people there not just drinking coffee! THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SUED FOR RACIAL DISCRIMINATION!!!! I had a very disturbing experience at the Commander today and have vowed never to return. I stopped by there today for lunch and I sat at the bar stools and an African-American family were eating lunch behind me and I overheard them say they were dissatisfied with the service from their waitress (which I completely agreed with because I had the same waitress not only today but other times before) and so they requested to speak to the manager. After they stated their complaint to the manager he became extremely defensive and irate and began yelling at the customers telling them never to say anything about "his girls" and "to get up and get out of his restaurant and never return again!!" I was completely dumbfounded. But even more disturbing was how quickly it became a racial scene as several white customers began to make ignorant comments, quickly siding with the manager and supporting his tyrant with their cell phones ready in hand to call the police. The manger did in fact call the police as the African-American family refused to leave. The 10mins it took until the police arrived felt like the longest most awkward moment ever!! But I quickly chuckled when the African-American policeman arrived!!!! The policeman professionally de-escalated the situation, the family paid for their meal and quietly left. It was evident they felt humiliated and embarrassed...made to feel that somehow they did something wrong. In that moment I was extremely disgusted with this establishment and quickly paid for my meal and vowed never to return. I did my best to catch up to the family and offer my support but they had already left and I was left feeling angry and confused. I thought maybe I had been part of the show called, "What Would You Do" or had been watching a scene out the movies the Butler or 42...but none of those were the case. We have tried various items from the menu and have yet to get something really bad. Service is good, just be prepared to wait if you go on Sunday morning or early Sunday afternoon. My cousin and I meant for dinner and some coffee last night at The Commander. Let's just say the only good experience that we had was our waitress. My cousin works so we both met a little later in the evening around 6:45. It was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Our waitress came to the table and said nicely if you could choose something from my new if we were going to eat that the cook stops at 8 tonight. So that's fine I ordered my sandwich and we were drinking coffee and talking. She told us not to worry that we could stay there because all they were doing after we ate was cleaning up and then leaving and that wasn't going to be until 10 p.m. . Well at 8 the owner Gus comes over to the table puts down a box and he says you're going to have to leave were closed and you're going to have to take your sandwich and whatever else you have and make it to go and I saw him doing this to others in the restaurant that we're still eating as well. I guess I'm jumping a little bit ahead of myself but our hostess I don't know her name gives me to menus and tells me to find a place to see she doesn't see people. I was there a week earlier with my cousins to have dinner and she did the same thing with the menus she doesn't even see you. So now it comes to the point where we decided we're going to have to leave I packed up my to-go box and went to the cash register to pay. I hand the hostess my debit card and our total was $7.95. She Taps on a sign on the counter that says you can't use your debit card unless the order is $10 or more. I said I'm sorry I don't carry cash this is all I have so this is what you're going to have to get paid with. And in a very snotty way she said we'll remember it for next time. As my cousin and I left and we were in the foyer we talked about our incident and we both decided there will be no next time because of how rude the upper management is. Like I said The only person that was fantastic the whole evening was our waitress and I hope she gets wise and leaves that restaurant to get another job elsewhere! Ate here with my family of 7. We had 3 kids meals, which are not really cheap especially since we have to pay extra for the gluten free buns, the kids meals comes with a small drink included in the price. Our server brought the drinks out in a 4 inch glass with the meal. The adult drinks are served in a 7 inch glass. I've been there before and never have gotten such a tiny drink for the kids before and they were refilled. When they needed a refill, our server informed us that the kids soda is not refillable. Advised her that we have always gotten a refill on the kids soda, she stated, not by me, this is the policy, no refills. The fact that I had to flag her down to get her to the table, not good service and how rude she informed us that she would not refill the kids drinks, and she was not thrilled to fill the adult drinks, will definitely keep me from coming in going forward. Pepsi products must be more expensive that RC and Coke that Commanders does not want to give a refill. Customer service here at an all time low. Apparently the soda must come out of our servers pocket. The Lemon Rice soup is very good but not enough to come back and get treated rudely. read more
