We began with appetizers "bag o egg and chips" and the heirloom potatoes simmered in lamb fat. The chips were very salty, nothing too special, the potatoes were just potatoes...but $15 potatoes lol. for entrees we ordered Seared fluke, which was very fresh and the presentation was beautiful with the theme of Spring. DH had the sirloin which was perfectly seasoned, with delicious leek and melt in your mouth mashed potatoes. For dessert we shared a variety of mousse with the honey comb in top. I don't even like peanut butter or chocolate but this was delicious!!! We were scraping our dessert plates! We enjoyed our meal very much, we've needed a place like this in Millburn/Short Hills for a long long time!!! The only thing is that the food was a bit on the salty side. It has happened. We have experienced the greatest culinary experience we've ever had. Thank you, Common Lot. Last night we had the "Kitchen Pass" experience. For 3 hours, we sat at the counter (very comfortable seats) overlooking the open kitchen and chatted with the chefs as they served us a multi-course meal (9, to be exact) of their choosing. While some of the dishes were from the menu, many weren't. All were exquisite, both to the eye and the palate, unique, imaginative and exciting. The details: Our Chanukah gift to our family - the best meal we've ever experienced. Thank you, Common Lot, for last night's culinary adventure!! The details for my fellow foodies: We reserved the "Kitchen Pass" evening - the chef's decide on what to serve, some from the menu, many not, and we got to both observe the kitchen and converse with the team!! The inventive and absolutely mindblowingly fabulous food: 1. Juniper-plum jam, frozen foie gras, shaved smoked maple pecans - served on a spoon, cloud-like, ethereal 2. Confit maitaki with cashew purée and dried morel powder - rich and earthy in the most umami of ways 3. 3hr braised, then barbecued, octopus w/tarragon and shellfish oil, bib lettuce, house made pickles, garlic aioli, on a bao bun - this dish! Perfect balance in each bite, octopus tender beyond belief 4. Seared Scallop, house-made sauerkraut, charcoal oil, fire roasted cabbage and brown butter broth - delicious. That charcoal oil!!!!! 5. Branzino poached in olive oil with mussels and clams, collard greens and sea beans in a roasted onion consommé, crispy branzino skin, sauce from the mussel broth and a smoked creme fraiche - the branzino texture was luscious and in fun contrast to the crispy skin! 6. Sous vide venison, bread sauce, fermented apple, roasted Brussels sprout, broccolini - okay, this tasted like winter by the fire in a cabin in the woods. Seriously. 7. Sheep's brie torched, with wild Maine blueberries preserved in vodka, bacon jam w/Guinness and brown sugar - just melty harmony (I could eat those blueberries way longer than I should lol) 8. Green apple kombucha sorbet w/ pickled and fermented apple - what a surprise! Not too sweet, not too tart, but the perfect balance of both. Addictive. 10. Walnut ginger tarts. Fire roasted chestnut ice cream, maple amaretto syrup, chocolate tuille, and roasted chocolate - the ice cream was quite the wonderful surprise here - and together, they just sang! The coffee was exceptional, as was both the tea selection and the teas themselves. The yuzu mint lemonade and fig apple kombucha both fabulous (special thanks to the gentleman, who's name escapes me, who took the time and effort to show us the teas that went into the kombucha!! Such deserved pride in his work!). In addition, the staff, led by the capable and great to talk with, Ehren, were friendly and excited about what they do. Clearly, it shows in their food! Very well done food, a bit on the expensive side for the fact that this is in New Jersey and not the most incredible restaurant I've been to. However, the lamb was delicious and two fish dishes we ordered were quite good. I found the fish slightly bland, and didn't like that lots of ingredients were repeated in each dish but the creative pairings in the food was impressive. Definitely would come back for the food and ambiance, but wouldn't make this one of my go to spots. read more

I loved everything about our meal: design and atmosphere, service, and certainly the food (really good braised pork and duck, and the fun take on carrot cake for dessert was an amazing way to end the meal). Especially in this area, it's a more than welcome addition that I've been watching closely and waiting eagerly for months. It's such a joy to have such unique and delicious food right in the neighborhood, rather than driving all the way into NYC -- seriously, thank you for opening up in my town. Cool place, definitely different which this area really needed. Living in North Jersey it seems like every corner is another Italian restaurant. This place brings a nicely needed change of pace. The dishes are creative and some I would say slightly daring. In my 2 trips to Common Lot I had 2 great experiences. Next time I need to try and stray away from the dry aged steak and get something more creative, but honestly it's so good I don't know if I can. Seriously!!! The duck egg was rich and delicately spiced; seemed like comfort food. The sashimi was light and delicate. The fish taco was crunchy and herby, and the lamb taco was robust. We then ordered each of the three desserts, which we shared. The cookies were divine - you could almost taste the butter. The hazelnut chocolate mousse was chocolatey more so than sweet. The apple cake was seasoned beautifully, with apple spices coming through. Only disappointment was probably my preference - small cubes of apple were salted, and a bit too salty for me. They will tell you the appetizer portions are small and order additional 1-2 more per person. I find the portion adequately large. One appetizer each was enough for us. But they taste so good so ordering more is not a bad idea I was particularly surprised by the duck egg. Taste was delicate and not at all what I expected (in a good way). For entree, we had pork neck and braised short ribs. Both were excellent dishes and chef put in a lot of care into the preparations. Table next to us ordered lamb shoulder and the portion is huge. For hungry folks that couldn't decide what to get, think no more and go for this dish. Another table had the seasonal fish big dish to share. It was a 2.5 lb snapper for $86. My husband and I had a reservation at 5:30 pm on a Saturday night. It was relatively uncrowded, given the early time. The interior was a mix of modern art and fixtures contrasting with warm, brown tones and faded wooden tables. Our server was warm, friendly, and attentive. And onto the food! Appetizers - or "Smalls to Share" as described on their menu: Bag of egg and crisps - We ordered this item based on online recommendations. The server holds a bag of homemade potato chips, deposits a poached egg into the bag, and shakes it for a few seconds. S/he then pours the egg and crisps into a bowl for your dining pleasure. I would say this was...interesting. The eggs added a chilled, sauce-like texture to the chips, which were very good. The egg itself is very subtle tasting so it felt more about the texture and experience vs. tasting eggs and chips. Plancha seared Scallops, cauliflower puree, fried curry leaves, raisins - The scallops were lightly salted and made an interesting contrast against the raisins. Main Entrees - or "Bigs": In house Dry Aged Duck Breast, celery root, walnuts, figs, spiced jus - My husband ordered this item medium rare. It was good and moderately flavorful. I admit I haven't had medium rare duck before so it was a new experience for me. In house dry aged Sirloin (30+ days), beef fat potatoes, creamed leeks, red onion jam, beef jus - I liked it. They cooked it just right - medium rare as well. Indeed, this place isn't a steakhouse so you're not going to get steakhouse-level meat. But it was juicy and the potatoes nicely complemented the steak. Dessert: Vanilla and Coconut Rice pudding, roasted Chocolate Sorbet - It was fine. Not overwhelming or bold. Just decent. I'm giving them 1 star because I couldn't even make it past booking a reservation. They also charge $25/pp for cancellations. After numerous attempts to book I finally got through. I made the reservation and later a family function came up so I had to call again to move it out. What was I thinking? That was unsuccessful. I was greeted with a voicemail advising me of their hours which are obscure and that I might have better luck emailing. I emailed and after a couple of days got a reply saying that the following weekend I wanted to book was unavailable. Aside from the inconvenience this all was, I found it odd that the first time I got through I was able to reserve 1 week out but the 2nd time a reservation 2 weeks out was unavailable. Fickle much? I'll stick to Pairings in Cranford where they are humble and accommodating. read more

Came here on Saturday night for the Kitchen Pass. There are 4 seats and you sit right at the counter overlooking the kitchen. You pay a flat rate and you have the seat for the entire night. The restaurant is BYOB so we bought a few half bottles of different types of wine so we could switch based on the course. This is a one of a kind experience. The chef introduces each course and throughout the night comes over to chat with you and you can ask the staff any questions. The food was fresh, inventive and very tasty. Some of the highlights were - a squash blossom with some liver mouse, a scallop crudo, super tender filet and a homemade ice cream. Highly recommend. It is worth the price. read more

Like another reviewer has said, like watching a star being born. The whole experience was top notch from start to finish - service and food. Space is great - retro, modern, comfortable, cozy. Able to handle large parties, families, romantic couples, and even those who want to sit at the kitchen bar (I hope to next time). We brought a bottle of nice champagne for a little celebration and we were promptly surprised with not champagne flutes but tulips. I had literally just looked up the best glasses for champagne that day because I was wondering why these wide glasses from yesteryear keep showing up in media and one of the pleasant accidents was learning tulips are ideal. Anyway, after that we ordered our starters of octopus and duck egg. Both were very good. Octopus texture was unique, not grilled or charred to the point the texture was meaty but it was firm and really nice. My wife loves the whole break an egg yolk and mixing it experience so she liked this a lot. We both did. Very nice start to the evening. For mains, we both got fish. Me the fluke and her the the halibut. Both fishes were amazing. Hers soft and light while mine was crispy on the outside and bit more of a meaty texture. It was hard to say which fish I liked better. However, when I factor in the accompaniments to each, I liked the fluke better - really liked the sauce and seafood ravioli as opposed to the peas, green beans mushrooms, etc. Yes, we both got desserts. She got the trio of mousse and was in heavean with the peanut butter and chocolate. I believe what I ordered was the pavlova - had marshmallow and lemon with a crust on the bottom. I didn't much care for the shell because I am not a white chocolate lover (can't hold that against the place - I ordered it!) but I really liked the dessert. Combine these 2 things with the great dark coffee - which was brought to our table with a timer and instructions - and it was a great meal and experience. Every-time we come we bring new friends and every time we come we get to enjoy a new menu (it changes seasonally) Chef Ehrin is top notch and a mastermind in the kitchen. If you get the opportunity def get a spot in the kitchen pass because 90% of the time you get the items that may end up on the upcoming menu and the ones that don't... you will wish they did when you return! Kitchen pass is hard to get but if you do it's worth every penny. The food I'm general is an absolute symphony of flavors and I have yet to meet a dish (I have had 90% of them) that I didn't like. Sometimes we order 8 out the 10 appetizer options (only when we are fortunate to get another couple to hop on THAT bandwagon) then we order two of the shared entrees. If you can get your hands on the shared lamb dish or the steak... they are hands down my favorite entrees. NOTE: IF you see on the menu the lamb and it is served with bao buns... GET IT!!! First of all, this place is BYOB which I ALWAYS love. The food is super fancy and I'd hate to be sipping on a mediocre bottle of wine that I had to pay $35 for just because they have a bar. I'd prefer to bring in my $15 bottle of mediocre wine to drink with my super fancy food. Anyway, as I said, the food is SUPER FANCY. There are several things on the menu I couldn't even pronounce. The menu changes seasonally because #fancy. I went with 3 other people and we got 3 "smalls to share," 2 "bigs" that two of us split, one "shared main for two" that the other two of us split, and 2 desserts that we all split. The portions of all the menu items were surprisingly generous. The 3 "smalls" were plenty for our table of four and each one was absolutely delicious. Everything was perfectly spiced and perfectly proportioned, like little works of art. The "bigs" were just as generous, and I'm not a light eater by any means. I split the beef shin and the romanesco salad with another person. Both were amazing. The "shared main for two" had something in it that I was allergic to so I didn't get to try it but it got rave reviews from my table. The desserts were AMAZING and my only wish was that we had gotten more of them. We got the panna cotta which typically would have been my last choice but it was just perfection. The service was amazing as well. Our table had a few allergies and he was knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating wherever he could be. It's also really well-priced. On paper it looks like it's going to be really expensive, but I think we ended up spending around $60 each which, for this level of food in my opinion, is a steal. Of course, the BYOB helps here. There wasn't one dish that I wasn't impressed with. I don't typically love food with a lot of frills, but I was surprised by this one. This place was just OK. First off, absolutely don't bring your kids. They do not have kids food on the menu and they do not know how to feed children. If you absolutely must bring your kids, order a ton of bao buns. They cost $1.50 each. I wish the server would have suggested this before my kids at all the toast off of my pate. I ordered the sirloin special and my wife had the artic char. Both were rare. Neither of us like rare. I would suggest this to the server next time, but this doesn't seem like the kind of place where the customer has input (no salt and pepper at the table etc). read more

I'm surprised at all of the high ratings for this restaurant. We had reservations for 845pm a couple weeks ago and were one of the last groups in the restaurant. It felt like they were trying to rush us out and didn't even offer dessert until we requested it. The service was not good. Some of the small plates we had were good including the octopus and the sashimi. However, my Arctic char was barely edible and had an odd texture and my friend didn't like it either. My husband wasn't a fan of the pork belly. For the amount we spent on our meal our group expected more, in terms of service and food. We won't be back. read more

WOW! This is an incredible new addition to the local dining scene. We were lucky enough to get to experience dining here during a soft opening night. Rarely do you see (outside of NYC) a restaurant with such thoughtful and inspiring design. The owners really went above and beyond with the architecture and decor. The kitchen is an open design with a full view of the action. Glassed in windows give people outside a show as well. The owners gave us a tour of the building which includes a 2nd floor library and private room with vaulted ceilings and huge hanging chandeliers. It's "jaw dropping". Our table shared many different apps which were all amazing. My favorite was the 18 hour braised pork. In my opinion the real stars of the show are the main dish options served for 2. Our table shared the whole roasted fish and the 12 hour braised lamb shoulder. Both were ridiculously great. Presentation was so beautiful I almost felt bad diggin into it. Really enjoyed my rice pudding dessert and coffee(table side French press) and tea service. Fyi, it's a byob (I was told "for now".) Common Lot is sure to be a hit. Came for dinner tonight to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant is small but modern. The open kitchen is almost half the size of he entire place. The service is wonderful. Our server, Morgan was great. Great sense of humor and very pleasant demeanor. We started with the poached lobster with sun chokes, the pork terrine and a goat cheese plate that was fabulous. The terrine was like head cheese and it was very flavorful. The poached lobster was good. But he surprise of the evening was the cheese plate. I mean cheese is cheese right? WRONG! This was a very creamy luscious goat cheese with bacon, fig jam and micro greens. A pleasant surprise. I went with the sous vide venison - very good. My wife had the beef shins. The meat of the shins is very much like short ribs. The meat was wrapped in mustard leaves and had a wonderful sauce. My venison was delicious and was served with baked grains, fermented mushrooms and a very savory sauce. We capped the evening with some French-pressed coffee, a chocolate hazelnut mousse on a brownie and a fig leaf ice cream, baked merengue and figs. Remember. This is a BYOB restaurant. Last night I had the pleasure of being invited to the soft opening for New Jersey's newest top restaurant- Common Lot. From the decor and chairs to the amazing food and friendly knowledgeable staff, Common Lot did NOT disappoint. Even the wine chillers and water crafts were impressive, and I'm usually not one to appreciate such detail. I went with a group of 4 and we started with our own wine (as it is a BYOB) and several appetizers. We agreed on the Bag of Egg and Crisps, Beef Tartare, Hasselback Potato, and 18hr Braised Pork. While the Braised Pork was my favorite, it seemed everyone at the table was more impressed with one than the other. Which to me is awesome, because sometimes when I eat out I prefer to order half a dozen appetizers with a friend and get a lot of variety as opposed to a main course. Luckily today wasn't one of those days. The Braised Duck Leg Ragu- Oh. My. GOD. Everyone at my table was fixated on this dish. Words can't even describe what this dish did for my life. Went to celebrate my bf's birthday here and we enjoyed the food, and the ambiance. For appetizers, we had the beef tartar which was surprisingly good. It was our first time to try it since we don't feel comfortable eating raw meat, but was surprised with the taste. It doesn't taste like raw meat since it has an Asian flavor to it that comes with crispy wonton chips. We also had the scallops appetizer, which was perfectly seasoned with a smoky flavor. For entree, we ordered their 12hr cooked lamb that comes with pickled vegetables and buns. The lamb shoulder was so tender that falls off the bone, the perfect ratio of fat and meat to it. My bf loved it. It was actually a lot for 2 people, maybe best to share for 4 people. The desserts we had was just average. We had the banana bread with ice-cream and walnut bar. I prefer the walnut bar since the banana bread was a bit dry. Could have been better if it was moist. Overall, their food is good.
