I love this place. Always a great atmosphere-all the beer I have tried is great. They have food trucks their occasionally and the tasting room is huge. I've never had a beer from Commonwealth that I didn't like. I first discovered their beer at a bottleshop in Raleigh, NC, the city I now call home- and was really excited to discover their operations were in my home town of Virginia Beach! Their brewers excel at creative flavor combinations and fermentation techniques, and there is something for everyone on the menu. A few of my favorite brews are: Patisserie, Papi Chulo, Sun Valley, Paramour and Hemingway. The staff is super knowledgeable and helpful, and the space is a lot of fun and always has good food trucks. Furry friends are welcome and I love bringing my pup along with me. read more

This is one cool brewer! One plus is that they always have a good set of food trucks that hang outside. My coworker and I agree that the beer really isn't a hit here. But the vibe here is just right. This place is usually packed out, most customers sit around at picnic tables and the lighting here is cool, really sets the mood. The parking here kind of sucks, sorry to say. There are plenty of times I couldn't find the turn in so I drove past and had to make a U-turn. What this place lacks in flavor of beers, it makes up in good service and good times. The only 2 sours they had were not available as part of a flight...not even available as a half pour or half pint. They are too rich and heavy, in my opinion, and do not necessitate a full pour. I prefer the lighter sours. 4. plus side: their servings for a flight are rather large...I am actually feeling a smaller serving for each sample in the flight would be prefferred. The only brewery I've ever seen with valet parking. I went on a Saturday night and unfortunately, there were a few beers that they had run out of and there were a couple of other beers that were not available yet. The double pineapple IPA was the one I really was bummed that I missed out on. So variety was a little tight. But I got really hooked on their West Coast IPA, it was very flavorful, but easy to drink. I can't remember the name, this place definitely have the most unique beer names I've ever seen. The Papi Chulo was a more juicy IPA, and it was pretty good too. I would certainly return when I'm in Chic's Beach to try more beers out. read more

It's hard for me to say what my favorite beer here is because it's one of the only breweries I can go to and order anything and love it. Their Marvoloso is my boyfriends favorite, they have amazing sours and some smooth easy drinking IPAs as well as some hoppy-er ones. Also their Eggnog Riot they came out with a couple thanksgivings ago was amazing! We also love coming here because of the location. It's pretty close to the beach without having to drive out to the oceanfront, they've got a decent outdoor area and a pretty big indoor area. They usually have a good local food truck parked out front so you can count on having some delicious food with your beers. read more

A friend introduced me to Commonwealth Brewing on a "let's go grab a beer" whim. I didn't know I was going to get a new favorite brew house. Commonwealth Brewing is a place that clearly cares a lot about great beer, while caring almost nothing for pretense or unnecessary fanciness. The benches and tables are unfinished, the floor is solid concrete, dogs are welcomed, and the menu is on a chalkboard. This is my kind of place! I had two of their beers: A delicious oatmeal stout (8.7%) and a life-altering sour mash beer (6.7%) that had been aging for a year. The sour mash had flavors of tart cherry and just tasted perfect on the tongue. Prices here are very reasonable for a bar serving product of this high quality. I will certainly be returning. Check them out... and, seriously, try one of their specialty sour mash beers. read more

I came here on 4th of july for the first time. It was a little out of the way but great atmosphere and staff. The beer was really good and employees were friendly. 3 reasons I went 5 stars v 4 stars. 1)All their beer is made right in their store. Which I homebrew so it was cool seeing everything on a bigger scale. 2) They let dogs in. Which honestly is a big factor for me. They had free dog treats in the front and bowls of water for them that my dog used. 3) they had alot of board games which is fun to do while drinking. read more

I really wanted to like this brewery since it is so close to chick's beach, and gave them more chances than I would typically give a place because of their location. They also keep several saisons, sours, and stouts on tap, which are my 3 go-to's. Additionally, who doesn't love a dog friendly patio? Unfortunately, their service really ruins the whole experience. I get it if someone is having a bad day, but their service has been consistently rude. The first time I came in, they said they were out of the sample and flight glasses. There were 3 other customers, and no one at the bar. Ok, can you offer a couple samples in the normal glasses? Or if I don't like what I order, will you change it out since I can't sample it? Or maybe tell me that you're running a load and some will be clean in a bit? I didn't actually bother asking any of these things as the impression was that I was already bothering him by asking about samples in the first place. I asked a couple questions about a couple of the beers. The bartender both did not know and seemed peeved that I asked. The rest of the visits there have been similar experiences with all but one of the bartenders that I've only seen once (who's name I'm unfortunately forgetting right now, but he genuinely seems to like showing off the beer). Last time I went in, I asked if their Raspberry Stout is sweet. The bartender rolled her eyes, and said "I mean, as sweet as raspberries can be." Rolled her eyes again when I asked for a sample after my question wasn't really answered (and yes, it is overwhelming sweet instead of the subtle raspberry taste that I've had in other beers... which is why I asked). The one experience wouldn't have been enough to not come back, but the attitude and rudeness is just too consistent. If the service was better, they'd really be a great go-to place. read more

Ok I'm gonna get to the point, Social Currency is the best beer I've ever tasted. Not an exaggeration, this beer is next level. High in alcohol that may scare some but trust me this beer is so good, you could place it in front of heads of state and they would know they have the best. Hard to describe but opaque is the word. This thing looks like a sherbet and drinks like an elixir. The CO2 is like microscopic baIl bearings rolling down your throat and the flavor is a combination of yellow cake and creme Brule. The head is perfectly 1 inch on pour and remains available to texturize and aromize every sip throughout the glass. Top of the line! read more

I'd have to say this is one of the better breweries in Virginia Beach. It's located off the beaten path and can be kind of hard to find, but I wouldn't let that deter you from enjoying a great brew. They have very little parking which can make weekend visits complicated, and there is no restaurant on site, but they usually have a food truck for the munchies. There is plenty of sitting inside and outside for any size party. I'd recommend any of the sours or IPA's that are on tap because they're top notch. My only complaint is that I don't live closer. read more

Beer is over rated and over priced. This place doesn't even show the price of the beers on the board behind the registers. My guess is to prevent sticker shock as 9$ for an ipa from the brewery is outlandish. This place has all sorts of cool events but you have to buy some over priced over rated beer to take part. They have such a great outdoor space here! Nice outdoor and indoor seating. Very kid friendly, and even better, DOG FRIENDLY! The nitro cold brew is really delicious, and the Fernweh sour beer is excellent (if not a bit expensive at $16 for a bottle). I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to do a flight of beers and try more- they're having a problem with a shortage of flight glasses. I dont frequent many breweries because I really only like Sours and Stouts (if you see my reviews of other places, its a common fun fact that I like to share), and not many breweries offer them. Prior to my visit here, I looked up their beers online to see what they offered and of course when I got there, my top two choices were only seasonal and not actually available. After sampling a few, because the employee really didn't seem like she cared about indecisiveness and didn't offer any comparable options, I ordered the Sophrosyne. It's more tart then sour, but is an OK option if you are someone like me who doesn't like IPA's. I can't say that I will be back here, especially with all the competition in the area, I've had better beers and experienced nicer staff. read more

This place serves flights like they should be served! The Beers: I went there almost back to back. It was some time ago, but my flight consisted of Cheval de de'or, Ojo Del Tigre, Wapatoolie, Taonga, Humblebrag, and Deliquesce. The flights were not small samples, but decent sized samples. The price does match how much you are receiving. As far as the beers go, I fell in love with Cheval de de'or. If it is still on tap, then I highly recommend it. The other beers were good, but I do think that it will all depend on preferences. Service: The people behind the bar were quick to attend and ready to serve you. Very friendly staff. The best part was when given a tour inside. A friend of mine met one of the brew masters, and was able to hook us up with a tour when we went there. If you speak to one of them, you can just hear the experience and knowledge that they bring to the art of brewing. Highly recommend seeing if you can get a tour, it will bring a higher appreciation of the beer they brew. Ambience: The place is rather big, and I would go as far as saying that it is bigger than most in the area. There are plenty of tables for people to sit at, and there are games that they have to enjoy your time there. There is also outdoor seating, cornhole, and space to enjoy the outside. As many breweries, food trucks is the way to go for a meal. So, come with an appetite! The only downfall is valet parking. It was odd to me that it is how their lot is managed. It is not what you expect to experience when you go to a brewery. Go grab something local! Go get a beer! read more

My 10-year high school reunion was held here the other night and the space was super cute and rustic both inside and out. There is outside seating with string lights and large windows looking into the building. Loved the ambiance so much! Our reunion was inside the cellar room with barrels everywhere -- great space to have a party. All the beers that I tried that were on tap and provided for the event were great. My husband and I love love love Commonwealth Brewery and the beers on tap. We've been coming here for years and always such a good time. Tonight we took our baby there and ordered pizza and 2 beers before heading off to a hockey game. Our food took longer than expected but we had no worries since it was as a busy Saturday night. I went to close our tab and we were just going to take our pizza to go so we wouldn't miss the game, I decided to grab some cans of beer to go so we'd have something after our hockey game. I closed my tab and headed back to the table to wait for the pizza. When I got back my husband and I had been waiting for a minute and thought why not open a can and split a beer because our pizza still wasn't ready. As soon as we opened the beer I'm assuming the manager came over and said "OH NO NO NO SIR you are. It allowed to open beers on the property!" And the demeanor of the man was very ugly and uncalled for. It changed our whole mood for the rest of our he stay. He could have kindly come up to let us know that was not allowed. At the same time we are there with our baby waiting for food not trying to cheat any system. Hopefully they speak with him because this really changed our view of the brewery! read more

An old firehouse isn't a new environment for a brewery, but the Commonwealth certainly takes a unique interpretation on various styles and brings the community table concept into full effect! Perhaps my new favorite brewery in Virginia, the beers put out a call for all geeks, nerds and neophytes to delight the taste buds and explore new combinations of flavors, textures and aromas. The beer speaks for itself, so I'll draw more attention to the overall experience. Dogs, hipsters and retirees were all enjoying the community tables and available games. The bartender was extremely knowledgeable and provided great direction on suggesting what to order in my sampler flight. Nice bathrooms, easy parking on a Monday night in late January and a food truck ready for visitors, although I had brought a snack of hushpuppies from nearby seafood shack Chick's Oyster Bar. I have to imagine this place gets super busy in the warmer months and on weekends, but I had a relaxing experience while in Norfolk for work. Commonwealth is comparable to other standouts in Virginia like hidden gem Pen Druid (NW VA, near the Inn at Little Washington) and Hardywood Park in their early days. Off Shore Drive, toward Chicks Beach, in a converted Fire Station/EMT building, is a popular and friendly brewery. Multiple local brews, fresh, and great staff. Food trucks back into the parking area in front, offering a nice variety of fresh offerings. The beers are wonderful , for a hop head like me, Big Papi and Supernaculum are a great find. Lots of seating, friendly atmosphere, and a great place to chase down a beer or two. This ranks with Green Flash and Reaver Beach for our favorite Va Bch Breweries. read more

From the large outdoor area with a food truck (usually rotates between a few in the area), backyard games, picnic area, lights all around, and a FREE valet parking, to their indoor tavern feel, large communal type wooden tables. The feel of this place is just overwhelmingly welcoming. And the beer is not too bad either!
