My in-laws were visiting from Ohio and love unique local bars. My mother, a longtime MoCo/Bethesda native, suggested Hank Dietle's, describing it as a fun place with live music and "the coldest beer in Montgomery County." We invited a group of aunts, cousins, my elderly parents and friends to meet us there and were genuinely excited. When we arrived, live music was being set up, the place was filling up, and the vibe felt lively and social. We ordered a large round of beers, pushed a few tables together, and settled in--cheering on the musician, talking amongst ourselves, and enjoying the atmosphere like any normal group in a bar. That's when things took a shocking turn. Mid-set, the musician (Dan Hovey) stopped playing, pointed directly at our table, and delivered a minute-long public lecture about how we were "too loud," that he "couldn't hear himself sing," and that we needed to quiet down and just listen. This was done loudly, publicly, and humiliatingly. We were not being disruptive, disrespectful, or louder than other groups in the bar--just social and enjoying ourselves. To make matters worse, some patrons in the back of the bar clapped afterward. I have never felt so embarrassed or unwelcome in an establishment. Even if there had been an issue, there are countless professional ways staff or Dave could have addressed it without singling out and shaming paying customers. We finished our drinks, closed our tab, and left immediately--our business clearly not appreciated. As we stood up to go, the people in the back actually cheered. I was deeply embarrassed that this was the experience representing Maryland hospitality to visiting family. Thankfully, we didn't let it ruin our night. We headed to The Stained Glass Pub, where we were greeted with warmth, respect, great service, and yes--actually cold beer. Walking in felt like a warm hug. Hank Dietle's should be ashamed of this display of hostility and poor hospitality. Needless to say, we will not be returning. read more

I am the lifelong resident of MoCo my daughter Grace M. references in her review posted today. Please read her review for full context. My sense of embarrassment equals my profound disappointment in Dietle's and erases what fond memories I had. Last night our group gathered at 5pm. 5PM! How could we have expected a "quiet show" when their website makes no claim to this nor was there a verbal announcement when music began at 5:30. Last I checked, 5:30 is a universal happy hour time and not an "A Special Evening with Dave Hovey" at the local senior center. I would like to add to Grace M's review that not only did Hovey publicly, loudly with his "bully pulpit" microphone, and humiliatingly singled our group out, he wagged his index finger and lectured us like we were disruptive two-year olds when we were engaging with one another as if in a coffee house setting. Honestly, did he think he was the Pope and we were there for a private audience? We are respectful patrons, unlike those we encountered who clapped after our public admonishment from Hovey and again when we left. We have supported Dietle's for decades including contributing toward its restoration. We deserve better. read more

Cozy and unique spot in this neck of the woods. Good beer selection; food's nothing special--chips & salsa and sandwiches. Show up for the music but be early. Seating's limited and only one person was working the bar, switching the kegs and serving the food (tip well!). The menu's electronic and it's on the wall, so you'll either have to position yourself advantageously, or yell over the music and hope the order's correct. (It usually is, but not always. Roll with it.) As others have noticed, it's a friendly crowd, which makes a big difference in the vibe with a place this size. They rigorously maintain their events calendar, so keep an eye on it and you'll find something to like. Support the small guys! read more

What a surprise in the middle of upper Bethesda/Rockville. This joint is more like a pub with an emphasis on music...from what I can tell, they have constant highly talented musicians rotating through here. The main genre here is the music since the food offerings suffice but wouldn't be the reason to drop in. Come early since it gets packed and order yourself a beer(no fancy drinks here, keep it simple) kick back and relax. Enjoy the music! read more

This is a first, I was charged tax on a cover charge - literally just to walk in the door, to see the band that was playing. Food was expensive for what it was, so we didn't order. Nice intimate crowd and great live music. read more

This is a really nice little establishment on Rockville Pike for good local music. It was easy to park when we got there (shared lot with Java Nation), and the staff were very friendly when we arrived. Their shows are posted online, and you can check which shows have covers or not there, and we chose a show with a $10 cover. It was easy to find a seat, but it gets busier as it gets closer to the time for the headliner's performance. They have a kitchen as well as beer, which is open until midnight, but we just got a couple of brews. They have both cans and beer on tap, and I was able to get a couple of local beers for $7 each. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, since it has a rather unique vibe, but it seems like Hank's has a healthy crowd of regulars and the music was really quite good. read more

Hank Dietle's Tavern is serving cold beer again! When a devastating fire in 2018 put this bar out of commission, the longest running bar in Montgomery County (and it's first liquor license) was no more. Alas, after three years and lots of struggles faced with great determination, Hank Dietle's is open again since Friday, July 24, 2021. The tavern offers live music and drinks, and the new owners have even added a small menu. It's a fun little place, and I'm so glad that its sign is lit again! read more

Hank Dietle's has been renovated and is a little oasis on the congested Rockville Pike. The new co-owners are doing a fabulous job of recruiting bands. There's always a band during Happy Hour (no cover) and then another band at Night-time (modest cover). They sell beer, wine, sandwiches and chips 'n dip. The customers are nice and typically middle-aged or older; the co-owners and staff are wonderful. It's definitely chill; has a nice, comfortable atmosphere; and is a good place to make friends. A great place, they have overflow parking up on security lane. And for those Bayer's who don't have their vaccination cards, they broadcast their shows online via Facebook live. My advice to them is just go pop some popcorn and watching the shows online. read more

One goes to Hank's for the live music. Seven days a week evenings and on weekends sometimes in the afternoon. Rock, jazz, zydeco, folk, alt... Also a decent sports bar. And if you and your buds just want to BS and sip brew, can't think of a better place. read more

ABS DISGRACE. My family has been coming to this place for years before it burned down. We returned recently to check it out after dinner. We were denied service because we weren't vaccinated.
