It took me entirely too long to get over to the truck and try them out but I finally did! They were super friendly and my order came out quickly for a Sunday morning. I had their fried "chicken" breakfast sandwich with a hashbrown added in. It was much bigger than I could fit in my mouth with one bite but that just forced me to slow down and enjoy it more. I asked Community Vegan to cater a 45 person staff meeting and they went above and beyond anything we expected. Every single one of our staff loved the lions mane steaks, raved about the mashed potatoes and greens, and gushed about the gravy. It was all perfect. The owners are so kind and wonderful. I paid 14 dollars for a toona sandwich with fried avocado and I am still hungry. The food was fresh and flavorful but just okay. The sandwich was toasted on regular white bread and the "toona" was well seasoned. I didn't "love" the avo fries but then again this was my first time trying them. So I really wanted to love this place. I have been wanting to try it for months and was really looking forward to it. My husband and I drove from two hours away and already knew what we wanted to try. Unfortunately, most of the things we wanted to try out were sold out which was really disappointing. And the overall experience was honestly very disappointing. Once we got our food(very quickly which was great!)we sat down in the seating area which was extremely hot. There is no cover and the metal seats were scalding. And we had no choice to eat outside because we took a Uber there. I have no problem eating outside but it's kind of hard to enjoy hot food in 100+ degree weather with bees flying everywhere trying to land on the food. Like could we get an umbrella or something? Now for the food. Overall VERY underwhelming in regards to taste and presentation. The fried shrooms were extremely greasy and lacked flavor. I honestly felt like I was biting into greasy fried flour. I'm also a big texture person and the shrooms were very rubbery/slimy and lacking tenderness. The fried avocados were honestly very unappetizing and I could hardly taste them, also they were very greasy. Like could see the grease dripping on the wrapper and napkins we dabbed them off with. My husband and I didn't even finish our food and threw away most of it. So wasteful I know but it was honestly hard to finish. To make the whole experience worse the staff was not very friendly at all. And the person who took our order didn't make any kind of conversation or offer any other suggestions when the items we wanted were sold out. They honestly looked like they didn't even want to be there. Now, the last thing I wanna say is that I am all about supporting black businesses and small businesses. And my husband and I are both poc, not to mention we've been vegan for 8 years. I really wanted to like this place and give it some love on my vegan socials but we were so unimpressed. I wanted to leave an honest review not to be ugly but to maybe just help with improvement so that maybe if I ever eat there again my opinion will change. I love Austin, I love black owned businesses, and I love being vegan. Thats why I really want the people who make vegan food to care about their customers and their experience at their establishment so that it will reflect in their food.
