AMAZING BBQ PLACE!!! Recently found a gift card for this place from many years ago and decided to finally use it and go here for lunch (and to see if the gift card was expired haha). Our food was significantly more than the gift card was, but without hesitation the cashier took the gift card and then proceeded to give us our entire order for free. The service was so fast, and of course most importantly, the food was incredible. We ordered ribs and pulled chicken with fries and potato salad. The ribs were absolutely top tier, falling off the bone, seasoned well, and perfectly tender. The chicken was moist and delicious, and the sides were delicious as well (especially the fries with Cajun seasoning). Their BBQ sauce is sweet with the tiniest bit of tang to it, and it worked so well with the pulled chicken! We will certainly be coming back to this BBQ place! My Mr. and I were staying at an Air Bnb in the area and the neighbors highly recommended Community Q BBQ to us. When you're down south, you have to get your BBQ fix, right?! Located in Decatur on a shopping center, there is plenty of parking. We called and asked if dogs are allowed since we are traveling with our Frenchie. And they do! Only on the patio though, but that's okay, 60 degree weather is perfect for us! As soon as we got there for lunch, someone came out with a water bowl for our little pupper. What a great first impression! It's simple, you order at the register and they bring you your meals. I got the pulled pork with one side of fries and my Mr. ordered the Beef Brisket with a side of Collard Greens. In less than 15 minutes we were eating our meals. Wow! Both the proteins were super moist and had great flavor! I loved their signature house BBQ! Really hit the spot. The fries were hand carved and the the collard greens were superb! I love BBQ ribs and, so far, this is my favorite in Atlanta Metro area with Tipsy Pig running a close second. One of the owners assisted with the order and it was well appreciated. I asked for enough to feed five and received more than enough. The restaurant is brand spanking clean with a reasonable amount of tables. My only complaint is that there is no alcohol served. I am sure that the tables would not turn if people were drinking. The restaurant is near Emory University. I try to go near opening, mid week. Therefore, there is no wait. Everything was delicious. Great BBQ near Emory in Decatur! This is my second time getting Community Q BBQ, and I've enjoyed it every time! My favorite is the mac and cheese and pulled pork, but everything is super tasty. What I got: - Pulled pork sandwich (5/5): the pulled pork sandwich was delicious! The pork was nice and tender but did get a little bit dry after a while, so I added some BBQ sauce to it (I'm not sure if that's because I got takeout). It came on a texas toast and was fantastic. - Half rack of ribs (4/5): these are your classic ribs - very traditional seasonings and nothing too out of the ordinary. If you are looking for fall off the bone ribs, then these probably won't satisfy you. However, they are some yummy ribs, and even though they don't fall off the bone, they're still worth a try. - Mac & cheese (5/5): some of the best mac & cheese out there! There is a nice crisp layer on top while the inside is loaded with cheese and creaminess. It does get a bit heavy, though, so even though it looks like a small side; it will definitely fill you up. - Blueberry bread pudding (3/5): not my favorite bread pudding. It was kind of dry and lacked some flavor. It did come with whipped cream, which was nice, but I probably wouldn't get this again. Parking: there is a lot, but it was very crowded when I went. When in the south, you've gotta have some good, down home BBQ, and Community Q is definitely a great place to get it. Easy to get to and even easier to love. You'll even feel like part of the "community" with the gracious southern hospitality. My lady and I heard about the place via a neighbor at the Air BNB we we staying at and decided to give it a try. I would absolutely call this some of the best BBQ I've EVER had! We sat out on the patio with our dog Billy, and almost as soon as we sat down, an employee walk out to us with a water bowl for Billy. That already gave me a great impression! Their menu has an excellent variety of tasty goodness like pulled pork, smoked chicken, sausage, brisket, ribs, and so much more! I ordered the brisket with a side of collards while my lady had the pulled pork with a side of fries. The service was quick and all of the food was absolutely delicious! The brisket was so tender, juicy, and seasoned just right. No need for sauce! The pulled pork perfectly cooked! We didn't leave a single morsel on either one of our trays! Yet another eatery that we've checked out and left shaking our heads over while most of what we ordered ended up in the trash. Pulled pork was dry and the sauces, of which there is only a selection of two (2) of them, didn't help at all. BTW, what kind of a BBQ place offers only 2 sauces ?? Fries were way over salted and had some sort of seasoning on them that reminded me of cajun BBQ maybe. Either way, too much of it. I'm not a BBQ connoisseur. I'll grill things in my Weber but I don't have the patience or tools to smoke meat. The best BBQ I've had was in 12 Bones in North Carolina. The price was $11 and included two sides and cornbread. The side portions were also larger than anything in Atlanta. I wanted to throw up afterward because my belly was too happy. Wait... I'm reviewing the wrong BBQ joint. Community Q is pretty good too. I like the location since it's walking distance from my house. For the longest time, Community Q was the only good food option in this shopping center. Nothing was comparable to Community Q quality until recently. The Po Boy Shop and Bird + Brew are good options now. I've been coming here for some local BBQ in the past five years and it's always been consistent. The sides are all pretty decent. I know the mac and cheese is a fan favorite but I'm not a mac and cheese fiend like my wife. I like the fast service and the lack of servers. I like the location and I like their food. My only dissapointment with this place is that they will run out of food on busy days. Would I come here again? Okay! I came back & before I even read my own review, I was right.. I got the ribs and macaroni & cheese again! I guess I kinda know myself, huh? My meal was just as good as I remembered it would be. This macaroni and cheese isn't made with regular macaroni noodles but rather a bigger noodle. The cheese is nice and creamy while the topping is crunchy cheese melted on top. The ribs are awesome as usual. Nice and meaty. They have 2 bottles of different barbecue sauces on the table. one is a sweet sauce and the other is a more spicy sauce with a vinegar base. I didn't really like it the last time so, I didn't even taste it this go around. I didn't even finish my ribs. I ate a half one and gave one to my boyfriend and brought about 4 or 5 home for later. Community Q is a very good BBQ joint in Decatur, in an area of town where there's not a whole lot of BBQ restaurants. This place is less than two years old (grand opening was Thanksgiving 2009). It was founded by one of the Daves of Sam and Dave's BBQ1 in Marietta (now known as Sam's BBQ1 and Dave Poe's BBQ). I like that Community Q has an emphasis on daily, fresh-cooked local meats and vegetables. The restaurant is located in the same shopping center as Bhojanic (Indian) and Pyng Ho (Chinese). There's a good variety of food in the immediate vicinity -- Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian, Indian, and BBQ. Q has a humble, down-home atmosphere featuring a cozy space with wooden furniture, mismatched chairs, a handwritten menu on the wall, and locally farmed, organic produce for sale. The produce is located below the wall menu. Examples of some of the items for sale when I went included pecans for $8 per pound and mixed lettuce for $4 a bag. Like other BBQ joints, Q offers sandwiches and plates that come with two sides. The specials looked enticing (pickled beets, smoked sweet potato with kale, "kitchen sink salad," etc.), but I ended up going with some of my favorites: pulled pork, mac and cheese, and collard greens. To my dismay, they do not serve fried okra here. Blasphemy! All prices on the menu include tax. The pulled pork was served with two buttered slices of toast and a few pickle slices. The toast was crispy and delicious. The pork was pulled in large chunks. I've found that the definition of "pulled," "sliced," and "chopped" can vary from BBQ restaurant to BBQ restaurant. The meat was tender and had a pleasant smokiness to it. The sauces on the table included sweet Georgia (red) and vinegary Carolina (yellow), a tradition carried over from the original Sam and Dave's. Mac and cheese starts off well and then gets kind of gross at the end. The noodles are nice and thick with a charred and chewy outer layer of cheese on top. As you make your way towards the bottom of the bowl, the noodles are just sitting in a puddle of grease. My last few bites were dripping with grease. Also, I think the mac and cheese here is a bit salty. The collards were delicious. They were large and leafy with several small chunks of pork to add more flavor and texture. I came hungry and one plate was enough to satisfy me. The food comes out fast and all of the employees are very friendly, from the owner/manager down to the kitchen assistants. Haha I can't write a review with just seven words :) If you like variety then get the $12 Meat Combo (2 meats) or $14.75 Rib Combo (ribs + 1 meat) which comes w/ two sides. I made myself not eat all of it so I could enjoy it later. BEEF RIB I'd heard this was the most popular among the meats - it's also the most expensive so I figured it must be good. When I came for dinner last year they ran out. I have another friend who comes here weekly just for the beef ribs. So my expectations were super high. Verdict? I thought they were very good - meat was super tender, flavorful, several fatty pieces but that's expected, and very black crusty outside but edible and delicious. I still liked the sausage better. OTHER MEATS Sampled Sliced Beef Brisket and St. Louis Ribs - thought they were just ok esp. compared to the more flavorful sausage and beef ribs. SIDES Absolutely LOVED their Baked Beans - I think they're the best in Atlanta. I'd heard great stuff about the Brunswick Stew too but already fell in love w/ the Baked Beans so the stew was just ok. I've been accused of being a BBQ snob. I am quick to correct them: I am merely a BBQ slut. Having heard quite a bit of goodness about Community Q, I very much looked forward to my trip here, and it did not disappoint. We got there before 7pm on a Thursday and experienced no wait/delay at all. Staff was also friendly and quick. A bottomless glass of root beer is always a good thing. (Even if it's cheap root beer--I am a root beer snob.) My beef brisket sandwich was excellent. Smoky and dense in all the right ways, served up on some Texas Toast, and flanked by some cole-slaw and mac & cheese. Dang. I'm making myself hungry again. The Cali friends came by to have one last lunch with me before dashing across country. The lunch hour rush was crazy around 1 PM on a Tuesday. The meat combo sandwich with 1 choice of a side was filling and delish. I didn't know how the 2 meats were going to be packed in, but it was surely packed atop the Texas toast. This meal was one of those messy ones where you need a napkin to be civilized. The pulled pork was more tender imo even though it was less flavorful compared to the beef brisket. The beef was a little on the dry side, but good nonetheless. Both had its own unique flavor, but I always like the more juicy meat. The side of mac n cheese was divine! This is the definition of a great Southern mac n cheese. The cheese was melty and flavorful. The sauciness of the cheese was prob due to it being cooked in butter. lol. Yummy in my tummy. The sweet tea was yummy as well. My friend's husband, a Cali native, couldn't stand the sugar level, but both of us adored it so much. We all shared the banana pudding, and it was surprisingly yummy. I'm not a fan of pudding and bananas in the same item, but this was fresh and had banana slices. Delectable. :) The vanilla wafers were a nice addition. I figured I should give my previous 5 star review a tune up. Hands down still some darn good barbecue. They are now open on Friday night until 9:30pm, which is a godsend, since I hate trying to drive to Decatur in Friday rush hour. Community Q BBQ is still in its trusty old location near Emory campus. After 8, they were already out of pulled pork and beef brisket, which, in my opinion, are some of the best meats. We ended up ordering ribs, sausage and a sloppy joe to share, with some sides of Mac and cheese and baked beans. The sloppy joe is basically their chopped beef brisket drenched in sauce. If they had gone a little lighter on the sauce, it would have been perfect. Mac and cheese was delicious, beans were just ok. The ribs and sausage were outstanding. Ribs aren't Fat Matt ribs, but are definitely a top contender without being overly sauced like at Fat Matt's. I'm so sad I didn't get to try their pulled pork and beef brisket, but I guess that's another excuse to keep coming back until I do! read more

You can find Community Q BBQ at 1361 Clairmont Rd, Decatur, GA 30033 in the no-man's land between Emory and Decatur in a shopping center across the way from the Veteran's Hospital. Nearby is the venerable Athen's Pizza and the empty shell of Bojanic. Parking is a mixed bag - in general you park in the lot out front, but this center is very busy - at times I've pulled in then decided to go elsewhere as the lot is not only full, but difficult to manage. I've eaten at Community Q BBQ a number of times - I've tried to eat there even more, but have turned away when they've run out of items (they post what's out on the door). This BBQ joint is incredibly popular so except long lines during prime times. The interior is more of what I call a traditional BBQ joint - nothing pretentious and lots to remind you that you're hear to eat delicious smoky pork. I notice there's a lot of students and local families which is always a good sign - no douchey hipsters in this crowd. The menu is posted on the wall as you order at the counter - while these days that's called "fast casual" I think that most BBQ restaurants have managed ordering in this fashion for as long as I can remember. Maybe they invented that technique - who knows? It's indeed effective. I ordered the 1/4 slab with 1 meat (pulled pork) and 2 sides (collards and Brunswick stew - basically my go-to). You grab a cup and fill up at a table while you wait for your name to be called. The place was busy so I sidled up to one of the long-row tables towards the back-left, sharing the space with a few couples. My companion was this carved wooden pig - not the prettiest date I've ever had but not the worst either. The food took a while to get to me - about 10 minutes or so, but was worth the wait. The crusty 1/4 slab was layered on top of the pulled pork with a piece of white bread as a "hat" - underneath was red-and-white checkered paper between the food and a tray. I've waxed on my opinions on BBQ before but as a reminder, I think there are two extremes: Heavy smoke with lots of rind (traditional southern style); and light smoke but juicy meats (more of a Memphis or Missouri style). The BBQ here was a bit center of the two with the emphasis on the smokiness, which is difficult to master. The too-smoky style tends to cover up the taste of the meat. The juicy style has very little smokiness. At Community Q you get juicy meat with a nice bit of smokiness where you can taste the meat but still get the feel of the smoke and rind - superbly done! This is definitely in my top 10 for Atlanta. The sides were above average - the collards were soupy but not slimy at all - basically cooked like I make them at home. The Brunswick had great smoky flavor but seemed a bit heavy on the corn (at least for me) and maybe a bit more acidic than I like. I'll order it again as it's good enough to grow on me. Overall the food here is excellent. I thought the service a bit slow, but it was a busy night and I was by myself so I didn't complain. Under other circumstances I may not have waited for it. My meal came up to $17.50 plus tax, tip and drink which may be a bit pricey for many but isn't too bad for intown. Overall I give Community Q BBQ 4/5 stars. (also posted to my food blog) read more

I work real close to Community Q BBQ and I've heard great things. So I decided to take a client there for lunch. We arrived at around 1140 and there wasn't a line so we ordered right away. If we had waited 10 more minutes, we would have had to wait. Get there early. It's a homey feeling inside. Nothing fancy about and I'm okay with that. When you walk in, you order at the counter and sit down. When your food is ready, they bring it to your table. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with two sides ($12.95). My sides were the baked beans and fries. The sandwich was delicious and their bbq sauce was good. I wish they had a variety of sauces but they only have one. The fries were perfect. However, the beans were not good to me. The seasoning was off and very peppery. I would definitely come back but I will skip the baked beans. Great eatery. I was impressed by the food at Community Q. I found my food to be seasoned well, cooked well (meat not dried out), and portions to be decent for the price. That being said I'd avoid ordering the lemonade. It was much to tart and sweet for my taste. I took a sip and thought - "This is going to be awful for my teeth." This is definitely a place to come back to for the BBQ. The parking lot is decent sized. While I didn't have trouble finding a spot, I came at off-peak time. I have eaten here once and recently ordered catering from them, so I will break down both experiences. catering: this was one of the easiest catering experiences I have encountered. I called the day of for catering dinner for 30 and it maybe took me 3 minutes on the phone. They even told me that I was maybe ordering too much (they were so right), which is a true level of honesty. We ordered pulled pork, chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, and Mac n cheese, as well as some drinks. We had so much food and everyone loved it all. When I picked it up, everything was hot and delicious and the drinks were chilled. I highly highly recommend them for your next party. restaurant: this is a great fast causal place but make sure to come early if you want the brisket. They ran out when I went, but I was planning on getting the pulled pork anyway, which was so good. If you're a Mac n cheese fan, definitely order that, it is one of the best ones in the city, though it can get a little oily, so I poured out some of the oil. I also really liked the coleslaw. It was more of a mustard base and on the drier side, which I really liked. I came for takeout on a Sunday afternoon and while they were busy, they weren't overwhelmingly so. The line to order moved quickly and I waited about 5 minutes for my food after ordering. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich and three sides because I couldn't pick just two. Let's just say I get the hype about the mac and cheese. After one bite I could taste they put something in theirs that I haven't tasted in others (and it was incredible). The noodles, the cheese, the crust, it was all amazing. I'm not a big baked beans person but their baked beans are really good. The black eyed peas with bacon and rosemary had good flavor but unfortunately lacked both bacon (I got two pieces at best) and salt. Next time I'll probably skip the other sides and just double down on the mac and cheese, although I'd highly recommend the baked beans if you like them. Onto the main event. The pulled chicken sandwich was straight to the point - just the pulled chicken on buttered Texas toast. You can opt to get it with their BBQ sauce, vinegar, or both. I opted for both but ended up just using their BBQ sauce which was solid. The pulled chicken itself was a mix of white and dark meat. The dark meat was juicy and the white meat, while drier in comparison, was not dry. With the BBQ sauce and the buttered toast I enjoyed the sandwich. Outstanding food in an unassuming place tucked away in a strip center. Everything we have had has been top-notch. All the meats are well done and moist. The sides are well seasoned and are a great compliment to the meats. And, they actually play good music (kind of a Texas Blues mix). Community Q is located in the same plaza as Ms. Iceys, so parking can be tricky. There is also, at least, one other restaurant in the same plaza so keep that in mind. Upon walking in, the pit/Smokey smell meets you at the door and leaves with you. It's not a terrible thing bc you know the que'ing is done on-site. But, I also didn't want to smell like a pit master for the rest of the day. Glad I was getting my order to-go. I still smelled smokey even in my short time in there. I ordered the Rib combo with brisket, baked beans, collards and mac. The ribs were phenomenal, Mac was pretty good. The rest was a gigantic "meh." The brisket was extremely salty. I actually gave it to my guy friend...bc he'll eat anything if he's hungry enough. And sure enough, he did. I asked him if he thought it was salty, and he was like "yeah, but I was hungry." I think he liked the collards. It tasted like they use pearl onions in them, and I LOOOOOAAAATTTHE pearl onions. So, after a taste, I passed those along to him too. I tasted the beans and didn't like them. He didn't either, so that's a no go on the beans for us. Now, I only like freshly squeezed lemonade. When I saw homemade lemonade on the menu and jumped at it. Chile...they used artificial lemon juice, water and sugar. Can we say disappointed. Noted to pay attn in the future. Holy crap this place is amazing! I had the combo plate of pulled chicken and brisket. The meat was very tender and full of flavor! They definitely know how to cook brisket and not dry it out. If you do get a combo, they'll come with sides. Grab the mac and cheese at least, even if you're not hungry. The meats (regardless of what you get) will be placed between two pieces of buttered toast. Just take it apart and eat if you don't want to bread part, but you'll be missing out. Years ago this place used to be generally packed so we decided to try it. I had the ribs and my buddy had the brisket. Both meats looked and tasted "old". They were both completely dried out and looked and tasted like sorry leftovers from your great aunts birthday party from last weekend. They season the ribs with so much black pepper which I've never seen before I believe just to cover up the taste of old meat. Their website claims they barbecue every single day they're open but it seems to me like they only barbecue once a week, for the whole week. And also the place was not very clean. Once you cross the threshold you are almost floating like Scooby-Doo does for his Scooby-Doo snacks! I'm not a saucy BBQ rib person. I prefer there to be either a light glaze or nothing. Community offers several sauces but their glaze is perfect for me. The ribs are tender but not so they fall off the bone. There is a little pull there and thats the way ribs should be cooked. The brisket is always good with a nice fat/lean ratio but be warned! Their brisket goes FAST! That's how good it is. My sides were the macaroni and cheese, which is made with love & yummy goodness, and the coleslaw. The coleslaw didn't taste like any I had ever had but in a good way. I am very picky with my coleslaw and this one made the cut. You can dine in or take out. They aren't open on Mondays or Tuesdays and I would suggest you get there on a Wednesday, early afternoon because I have seen that place on Thursdays and Fridays and it is PACKED!
