We have had two separate brunches in this nice family owned local diner in Brookings. First time I had a classic biscuits and gravy breakfast and also tried Panini sandwiches with avocado and ham. They gave us so much in the paper containers and tasted wonderfully fresh that we went back for second try this past weekend. We went for Sunday breakfast and ordered their homemade chicken soup and classic breakfast with eggs and ham over their now very familiar hash browns and Reuben sandwich. The consistency and excellent quality of taste and quick service were very welcoming. We ate right outside the restaurant in a common area where we have two dining tables in a corridor shared by another great Italian restaurant called Black Trumpet Bistro. I give this local mom and pop diner two thumbs way up and going to eat there next Saturday. I can't wait. read more

Asked for two dirty chais. This is one of those annoying coffee shops that only include one shot of espresso for a 12oz dirty chai. Lame. Anyways asked for two in both- only got one with a double shot and employees took the time to make themselves a coffee before they even made ours. I was craving breakfast as I haven't had it for such a long time since I've been traveling a lot. This place was 15 minutes away from the hotel I was staying at. They are only offering takeout during Covid. They have dairy free (vegan) options which was surprising for me as I haven't seen any vegan friendly places in this part of town. The ladies that work here were some of the friendliest bunch & were helpful when recommending some of their pastries. I even bought myself a beautiful metallic watercolor painting by Joshua Matthew (apologize if I got the name wrong). Pancakes (half) $3.25 -Comes as one pancake with syrup & butter. Nothing too different from your regular home style pancake. Vegan Burrito $11 -Has Black beans, Hash Browns, Spinach, Onions, Peppers & Avocado. I subbed from the beans to adding eggs. Also comes with a side of Salsa (non spicy). I was really impressed with the burrito as it was very packed & tasty. The salsa was also very good. I would definitely recommend this burrito. Mocha Mexi -Subbed the milk to Soy. Rich in chocolate, the espresso really did the job for me. Would recommend this for any chocolate lover. I'm so happy I came & found this place. I think the pictures of the food must be from the previous owners. Hands down the worst omelette either of us have had. It tasted and smelled like it was cooked in the microwave. It was bouncy and hard. I'm usually one to power through but couldn't do it. Two stars because the staff is super friendly, the restaurant is cute, and they have outdoor seating. I'm sure it makes for a great little coffee shop. But I cannot recommend the microwave food. So gross. read more

Stopped by here on my way south and was not disappointed - latte was great and the veggie breakfast burrito was absolutely delicious! And easily two meals as it was huge. I also need to right a wrong - I ordered it without onion and, upon opening, thought what I saw were chunks of onion, so returned it. They were extremely apologetic - new chef, etc. - remade it quickly and even kindly comped me a pastry. The manager/owner noted it may have been potato as the chef was firm about not putting onion in the initial burrito - I want to vindicate and confirm the chef was right, they made it correct the first time! It WAS potato that was prepared in a way (small white pieces) that made it look like onion and, if I'd taken a bite, I would have known. this place was right down the street from our air b&b in brookings. it's super small, but packs a big personality! we came here because of the more "normal" food selection since we are traveling with kids. they had b&g, pancakes, French toast, and all the things our picky eaters are used to. all of our food was amazing- the kids and I had the traditional French toast meal and my husband had the atomic burrito. we were all impressed with the food, and the chai latte was super good as well. I did not expect there to be live music, but it was a nice touch. would definitely return if in the area again! read more

If you are on the coast you have got to make this one of your stops! Rose is phenomenal and the food is just incredible, huge value! We were super lucky to stop here before going to the Pelican arts festival before setting up and had this delicious breakfast. Best little breakfast cafe!!! We stopped here on our way back to Humboldt and it was seriously phenomenal. The vegan breakfast burritos were amazing all around. Perfectly seasoned and a really great portion size too- I saved my other half for the drive back home! Also got an iced oat milk latte which was, again- phenomenal. The atmosphere was also super cute and outdoor seating was a plus. The workers were kind and brought us our food and coffees outside which was super sweet. Well... let's start by saying... it was New Year's Eve day so I was glad Compass Rose was even open. A lot of places were not. Let's also say the food was good. The wait for the good food was... not so good. There were three fellas in our group and we waited about 40 minutes to get three omelettes. I can't say the service was horrible because the ladies who helped us were very nice. But they seemed like they were all a bit distracted and/or tired. Additionally when the food was served our plates were carried out somewhat like babies, with the edge of at least one plate held against the servers side. I hope that sweatshirt was clean... The only other issue is they were out of wheat bread and out of gravy for hash browns. My doctor would approve. I, however, had hoped for some delicious pepper cream gravy to put the final touch on my hash browns and omelette. The coffee was hot and tasty. This restaurant has a lot of potential. Will I be back? Probably not. I don't visit the south coast often, but if I am back in town, I'll try something else. read more
