The only thing I knew about this place prior to finally giving it a try is that they are known for serving their food on paper plates. I was not particularly interested in going but was convinced by a friend. That time ,I was truly blown away. I had chicken enchiladas with mole and it was probably top three best mole I ever had. Also, the strawberry margarita was and still is one of the best that I have had. And you cannot beat the price! I was also pleasantly surprised about the bean dip that my friend had raved about. Service was great, the food came out fast. It was delicious. If I had written a review after my first experience there, it probably would have been four stars. However, I went back for a second visit the other day and it was disappointing. In spite of sitting at the bar, where service is usually better and more attentive, the bartender made us wait a while just to be able to place our order and then it seemed that he forgot to place the order because we noticed that three tables that arrived after us got their food before us and then we saw him scrambling to put the order in. I enjoyed my meal last time I was there so much that I placed the same order this time. Last time, they put the mole sauce in and on the enchiladas and this time I was told that's not something that they do. These enchiladas were one part chicken, two parts cheese, and three parts onions. Basically an onion enchilada. It was practically inedible. If I based my review only on this experience I would give it a 2. Since there was such a stark contrast between the two visits I decided to go with the average of the two and give it a 3. This is the best Mexican food in the city I've been going here since I was a kid. I've had everything on the menu and have never had a bad meal. The chips and guac is incredible chips and beans are even better. My favorite meal is the Mexican plate lunch or the tostadas. The service is fantastic very kind and helpful workers! Despite the recent less than stellar reviews, I ate here recently with a couple friends for lunch on a weekday. I viewed the online menu beforehand so I knew what I wanted to order, I knew I'd be charged for onions, and I knew an 18% "service charge" would be added to the bill. That being said, we were seated quickly and provided menus and asked if we'd like drinks. The drinks were reasonably priced and tasted great. Conjito's has always done basic margaritas great. The food came out quickly and was delicious. I tried the stewed chopped beef tacos for the first time and I am hooked on them. The only hiccup came when our waitress forgot a couple to-go items I ordered and paid for. She had the items prepared and packaged very quickly. I can't speak for late afternoon or evening service but going shortly after lunch was probably a good idea. read more

I'm not even going to complain about the food served on paper plates because that would be cute if the food was good. "They have the best margaritas in town" - um, no they don't. The menu clearly says "premixed margaritas" horrible. Guacamole was purée mush. Chicken enchiladas harken back to 3rd grade school lunch. The "beef chopped meat" yeah, that's what they call it - was horrific. Looked like dog food. They charge you for every little thing. $1.00 for lettuce / $1.00 for cheese / .50 for sour cream (that comes in a packet). They also charge you for water and an 18% gratuity on all checks - probably because most people with sensitive palates don't want to tip for this garbage food. Not my favorite Mexican food but one of my favorite place to eat. Maybe it's the nostalgia, as I've been coming here since I was a teenager. This place hasn't changed much over the years. I have many great memories here. The food is good, the drinks are strong, service is fast, and although the prices have gone up, I still find it very reasonable. I usually get chicken mole, enchiladas, or tostadas. I always get chips and salsa and often the beans and cheese with chips. The have a delicious huevos rancheros on Sunday's too. This place is not fancy. Most dishes are served on paper plates. But that's how it's been for as long as I can remember. I prefer the old side to the newer side. It's dimly lit, eclectically cozy. You may end up sharing a table as there are not many and one is pretty large. I'm glad this place has survived. Milwaukee would seem less Milwaukee'ish without it. read more

This has been our go to Mexican place for many many years. The service is always great. The food changes a little bit from time to time. The last time we were there the beans were a little bit thin on the tostadas. However, for the price, the food was still an excellent deal. I'm Done ! Went to Conejitos last week and had my tried and true Pork Ribs and a diet coke. When the bill came I saw it included a 20% tip. I called the server over and asked "Que?" She said the owner (Mr. Miller) began it with COVID. I said, I was not alerted to this ... She replied, 'its on the Menu." I replied: I never picked up the menu because I know it by heart. And so it devolved from there.....How they (employees) wouldn't have a job without this enforced and unpublicized "uncharge." I wasn't upset with server, but the owner should be roasted on a spit ...Jose Garza wouldn't aliened longtime customers & friends in this way. If you want to rip off customers, you've done so. I haven't been here since 2013 because of a bad experience. The food is still solid and tastes exactly the same. Still served on paper plates. The seating is sectioned off and you have to wait to be seated. Same divey decor from 30 years ago when I first came here. Conji's has been hit or miss for quite some time and the reason to keep going was more nostalgic...Our visit today reminded us of what was so great about the place to begin with. We skipped chips and guac and went right in for our plates. We both ordered two chicken enchiladas and two steak tacos.I requested my tacos well-done with some cotija cheese, rice and beans. Ask anyone from Milwaukee and they may tell you about this place. Known for its mole sauce and the paper plates they serve everything on except the ribs. The place is very small and so they do make you feel a bit rushed to eat and get out to make room for the next people waiting. I will say the mole sauce was good. I had it on the ribs. And while the ribs were tasty, I was disappointed on the portion size. It was maybe 2 or 3 bones and you know there is not much meat on ribs. As I said, it was small and for whatever reason they were packing everyone in the front bar area versus spreading people out to the back room. I've many stories about this place and feel like I'm the last person on Earth to have visited. Unfortunately, I was not impressed. I'm not sure what all the rave reviews are, not to say the place is bad but it's far from 4 stars. I ordered the combo place which was 2 steak and 2 chopped meat tacos. It comes with lettuce and tomato, if you want cheese it's 25 cents per taco. Granted it's a dollar more for cheese total; however, it should be free considering it's just a little bit of sprinkled cheese you can't even taste. I only ate the 2 steak tacos and was a little disappointed. There's absolutely no flavor at all. It's just a thin and a little tough piece of steak without any seasoning whatsoever. I also ordered rice & beans on the side and those had no flavor either. The rice seemed days old and the rice was very bland. Overall the food was little to be desired. The decor was pretty bad, definitely could use some updates. Don't get me wrong, updates are not cheap so even a little cleaning would help. Walls and floor didn't look the greatest and the pictures didn't really go with the restaurant. I don't like leaving not so great reviews but unfortunately this place does not have much going for it. If you want something cheap, super fast but without flavor then this is the place. If you want authentic Mexican food to eat in a clean updated restaurant, this is not for you. Beware of Conejito's recent policy changes. We've been going to Conejito's monthly for 40+ years but after Sunday's experience, we're done! We took my mother-in-law there on Sunday for her 82nd birthday and told the staff that we had a party of 6 but were waiting for the last 2 to arrive. We asked for chips, salsa, and drinks and were told we would not be served until our entire party was present. About 5 minutes later we found out that the other 2 were not coming so we informed staff that we were now a party of 4 instead of 6. We were told "Sorry" we cannot serve you tonight because you told us that you had 6 and now you only have 4. We knew more than half the staff on Sunday and they told us sorry, this is our policy, and nothing we can do. This also happened to the table next to us and she told staff that Jose is rolling over in his grave!!! read more

I've been coming to Conejitos for probably 30 years, but last night was my last time. The food is still the same. I'd give the food 4 stars. Its good simple, Mexican fare at very reasonable prices, but the "rules", yes, go and you will find out all about the "rules". I loved the dead plants and old painting decor, but now the place proudly displays their "rules". No seating unless all guests are here, time limits on how long you can have a table, no water, no parties of more than 8. Don't you dare try to put two tables together. This started before COVID and has just gotten worse. I tried to order to order a Margarita at the bar, i followed the rule sign that said to order in this exact spot, but then was told I can't order a drink at the bar. What restaurant doesn't let your order a drink at their bar while you wait for a table? The message was sit down, eat quietly, eat fast, and go. No need to worry about tipping either as 18% is automatically added to your bill no matter what party size (its a rule!). The sad news for them is it shows in other reviews but also in attendance. Going the night before Thanksgiving has been a tradition with some friends of mine for years. it was always packed with their large backroom that could seat a 100+ open. The food is ok, but it has gone up in price. They charge for water and add a mandatory 18% service charge to your check no matter what size party you have. They charge $6.50 for a small greasy plate of chips and a small bowl of guacamole. They also charge 10 cents if you want a lime in your margarita. What a joke. Since the owner passed 13 years ago the new management team is doing a very poor job. This used to be a busy hustling place but not anymore. They refuse to open the large space in the back - so you wait to be seated in the cramped space in the front or the bar. If there is no space you wait till one opens (yet the back room is left empty) - if your full party is not there- all together - you are not allowed to be seated And you have to wait outside. One of our friends wanted to come here on a Friday night to relive fond memories from his childhood. He said that when the original owner of this place was alive it was the go to place, but now it's hit or miss. For me, last night was a big big miss. We were waiting for a few of our friends to get there and they wouldn't seat us. Couldn't order drinks or appetizers. So we went across the street to get drinks. When our total party arrived they put us in the tightest corner and took our drink order. As a table we wanted a pitcher of margarita, so one drink order. They brought us the wrong order. The menu options are extremely limited, but hey if you're really good at something then that's all you'd want to serve. I ordered the steak tacos. Each taco had half a piece of meat in it. Everyone else at the table ordered the chicken mole. They got nice big pieces of chicken and enjoyed their meals. (This explains my two star review, otherwise I would have only given one star.) When it came time to pay our check our waitress dropped off the check and then waited 30 minutes to come pick it up. The restaurant closes at 10 and at 9:30 they turned all of the lights on to encourage people to leave. When I went to the bathroom to wash my hands the hot water didn't seem to have any regulation on it so my hands were scalded. This place may have been really great back in its heyday, but whoever is running it now doesn't care. You pay for what you get, and here you're not paying for much at all. read more

Let's start off with this place seemed to have decent prices at first, until the check came... 38.50 for two plates and they charge for waters. Ordered lettuce on the side instead of inside the tacos that come with lettuce already and they charged a dollar for it. Don't know if they didn't understand or were just trying to run the check up as high as they could to then add a 18% service fee. They charged over 2 dollars to add sprinkle on crumble cheese that should never go on tacos they didn't tell us what kind of cheese it was going to be they just kinda surprised us. My wife did not like that kind of cheese at all she thought it would have been like quesadilla cheese but it was not any where close it was not even warmed up so it made the tacos cold. The paper plates must be the reason they charge so much for nothing when you think it would be saving them money. The place has very bad seating almost like you're stuffed in a closet. The atmosphere is very dull and my daughter said the place was very boring. If you like high quality food prices for low quality food service this is the place to be. I don't eat here often. It's a novelty to me more than it is a dining establishment. It's a place you have to visit to say that you did, but there are much better options in town for Mexican food. It's cheap and some of the dishes are hard to screw up even though they seem to find a way. In the past, I've tried the ribs and the chicken mole and both were terrible. On the most recent visit, other Yelpers enjoyed the Chicken Mole, so I was happy to hear that the dish was improved. I typically play it safe, tacos or plate lunch with beef or pork. The chopped beef, in particular, is my preference for taco filling, and I've had the plate lunch with beef on more than half of my visits without issue. The rice and beans are usually passable and the flour tortillas are usually great. My most recent experience with the plate lunch was not so good. I decided to order it with pork this time. The pork was good. The tortillas were great. The beans were good. The rice was BURNED! I left it on the plate when I "finished", hoping the cooks would wonder why, but I doubted they would care because they sent it out to begin with. I discreetly told our server, in Spanish to help with the discretion, that the rice was burned. His first response was "I didn't make it." Are you f'n kidding me!?!?!? I kept my composure and followed up with "I know that (a-hole), but please let the kitchen know about this." His response to that was "that's the same way we've been cooking our rice for 40 years." Atthis point, I wanted to lash out and say "really (a-hole), you've been *censored* burning your *censored* rice for 40 *censored* years because I don't remember getting *censored* burned rice here before, you stupid *censored*!!!" Yet, I kept my composure and instead, stewed over this for the rest of dinner, anticipating how I would share my experience on Yelp. I granted 2 stars because not all of the food sucks and this was the only time I encountered such blatant disregard for customer service. By this time, it took al of my self control to keep from absolutely losing it on this guy. It was a Yelp UYE, and I didn't want to ruin dinner for my Yelp friends nor embarrass them, but I really wanted to grab that guy and shove a pot of the burned rice in his mouth, so he could understand what the hell I was talking about. I was fuming! I didn't bother telling the manager because I don't care enough about the place and I couldn't control what I would say. If they don't care about the food they put out (and yes I know you get what you pay for, but I didn't pay for burned rice) or train their staff properly on how you DON'T GET LIPPY WITH THE CUSTOMERS, then to hell with them. I would have made my point with the "tip" I was going to leave but they already put the tip on the bill, the bill that had several drinks added to it from another table. They seemed completely oblivious to this as if it happens all the time. CHECK YOUR BILLS AT THIS PLACE, PEOPLE! The incompetence extends from the kitchen to the bar and wait staff. There are plenty of people in town who think a good margarita is what makes a good Mexican restaurant and they'll help keep this place along with other crappy Mexican restaurants open. It's the kind of place you can eat in your stained sweatpants and no one will notice. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were alright. I really liked their chunky, spicy salsa (in the red ketchup containers on each table). Chips and guac were subpar. Margaritas aren't much to write home about. I'm also a bit sketched out that the (very small) menu contains options for "meat" dishes. Not beef. Not steak. Not chicken. "Meat." Enjoy the mystery! We've been going to Conejitos for over 30 years. We recently stopped by for lunch with our daughter. She was a few minutes late and Conejitos refused to seat us as we weren't a complete party. We understood, and said, "no problem, just seat those of us who are here". They refused. Since they wouldn't seat us, we tried to get a drink while we waited. They refused. We again asked to be seated as a group for those who were there and they refused. In the meantime, they seated numerous parties our size and just left us standing. We left and went to Botanas where we had GREAT service and GREAT food. No problem that we had to wait literally 2 minutes for our daughter. My advice, forget Conejitos due to their utter lack of customer service and common sense. read more
