Did you get properly smashed at Great Lakes Distillery across the street? Mosey over to Conejitos for dirt cheap Mexican grub served on paper plates. Conejitos is a total dive. It's the kind of place you can eat in your stained sweatpants and no one will notice. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were alright. I really liked their chunky, spicy salsa (in the red ketchup containers on each table). Chips and guac were subpar. Margaritas aren't much to write home about. I'm also a bit sketched out that the (very small) menu contains options for "meat" dishes. Not beef. Not steak. Not chicken. "Meat." Enjoy the mystery! Let's start off with this place seemed to have decent prices at first, until the check came... 38.50 for two plates and they charge for waters. Ordered lettuce on the side instead of inside the tacos that come with lettuce already and they charged a dollar for it. Don't know if they didn't understand or were just trying to run the check up as high as they could to then add a 18% service fee. They charged over 2 dollars to add sprinkle on crumble cheese that should never go on tacos they didn't tell us what kind of cheese it was going to be they just kinda surprised us. My wife did not like that kind of cheese at all she thought it would have been like quesadilla cheese but it was not any where close it was not even warmed up so it made the tacos cold. The paper plates must be the reason they charge so much for nothing when you think it would be saving them money. The place has very bad seating almost like you're stuffed in a closet. The atmosphere is very dull and my daughter said the place was very boring. If you like high quality food prices for low quality food service this is the place to be. We've been going to Conejitos for over 30 years. We recently stopped by for lunch with our daughter. She was a few minutes late and Conejitos refused to seat us as we weren't a complete party. We understood, and said, "no problem, just seat those of us who are here". They refused. Since they wouldn't seat us, we tried to get a drink while we waited. They refused. We again asked to be seated as a group for those who were there and they refused. In the meantime, they seated numerous parties our size and just left us standing. We left and went to Botanas where we had GREAT service and GREAT food. No problem that we had to wait literally 2 minutes for our daughter. My advice, forget Conejitos due to their utter lack of customer service and common sense. read more

Nothing beats the in person experience... I don't think so! I went with 4 friends Saturday evening for dinner and drinks. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas and some chips, beans and salsa. After about 6 inquiries asking if we were ready to order, within a 15 minute time span, we said we were ready. We attempted to order a second pitcher of Margaritas (we were a party of 5) we were informed there was a one pitcher limit. We asked to speak to the manager and were told this was a state law. We called her out on that because it simply is not true. She then said it was there policy. What they are trying to do is turn tables but while we were there, there were many empty tables, there was no one busting down the doors to get in (now I know why). By far my favorite Mexican restaurant in the state of Wisconsin!!! While the ambiance is a dive, that is part of the charm of Conejitos. Don't be fooled by the looks, this place has food that will bring you back again and again! My favorites are the plate lunch and the pork spare ribs with mole sauce... oh and don't forget the beans... we are pretty sure they put drugs in these because they are the best you will ever have!!! Aside from the food Conijitos has a full bar and serves some of the best margaritas in town- you can buy them by the pitcher. Bring a friend that is willing to be your designated driver, these babies are fully leased and delicious! So bottom line is that yes a restaurant with dead plants and paper plates can serve you a meal that will have you wanting to come back, soon. These are my photos of this restaurant renewed when i came in June of 2021 that I though was nice. However the service did not seem good with the certain staff that were working but the most part the I love and enjoy about the entree I ate on the Mexican plate lunch I ordered was the pork and It made me crave down all my food including making the beans with the other stuff on all the tortilla and made me in my way to make tacos to eat of a bunch of a feast. I will definitely make sure I think about ordering pork burritos next time as for the pork was my most favorite meat to taste of yours. Seriously, we'd make an hr and a half drive just to eat here! And now that I live here I am constantly finding myself always eating here. Real authentic food and seriously good margaritas! So this place was recommended by my son's teacher and he was dying to give it a try! I love that it is located in Walker's point and just a quick drive away from home. Hubby, the teenager and I found a parking space pretty quickly and walked into a very busy lunchtime crowd. We were seated in one of the last table's left and after a 10 minute wait received our menu's. First a couple things. This is not a fancy restaurant it is small place that gives you an authentic experience. They serve the food up on paper plates so if that bothers you, this isn't your place. The margaritas are straight up cheap and delicious! We placed our orders with all of us ordering tacos with chips and salsa. Our food took a little longer than I would have liked, but it was lunchtime and they were packed. The food was good! Is it the best I have had? No but it is really good and the prices are fantastic. Stopped in here during a recent business trip to Milwaukee. Those who follow my reviews know that I'll sniff out a taco if I'm within 100 miles of it, and so I did just that. We were staying literally one block away, so when I got tired of the hotel menu I decided to see what was around. Wouldn't you know it, found tacos on the menu, so I was in! It's a rather unassuming building, looks like someone converted an old house. Upon walking in the door you find yourself in what appears to be the former living room, faced with a bar along one side of the room and some seating crammed in where ever it would fit within the remainder of the room. Me and my traveling companion were seated nearby and we both ordered a plate of tacos. I ordered the plate of 4 beef steak tacos. What came was more like ground beef than steak. They are served on flour tortillas even though the menu picture shows both a flour taco and a hard shell corn taco. The menu states "served with lettuce and tomato only", so my expectations here were kind of low. Everything was served on paper plates, including the chips and the salsa which also came in a Styrofoam cup, so basically my expectations were met. I will say, for $6 it was a decent enough lunch. Quick, edible, but not much more than that. As I walked back to my hotel I kind of regretted not trying something else around the area. We always order beverages but like free service water on the side. Secondly, the guacamole and chips only come with about a dozen tortilla chips, so we asked for some extra chips. No need to overreact because this place has its best years behind it . They continue to serve you food on flimsy paper plates . If you order food to go they charge you $0.25 per item that you order . On top of that even if you eat alone they charge you a mandatory 18% gratuity . They now charge you for water . It's an unbelievable money grab from a place that has average Mexican food at best . There are many better options in that General vicinity you're better off choosing those and not having to worry about your plate falling apart when you're trying to eat off of it . Handing you a paper plate of average food and then charging you 18% is one of the more ridiculous things I've seen dining out in Milwaukee . Depending on the size of your order that gratuity is pre-tax so you're basically ending up paying more tax on your bill because they add the gratuity and then put it in towards your total price . I prefer to see how the service is or what it's worthy of and then I will tip accordingly . Our first choice for a Mexican lunch was closed on the Friday of the holiday weekend so we walked two blocks over here. It was packed at lunch so we sat at the bar. It had been years since we were here and we forgot how cheap this place is - three enchiladas with one side for under $4! And the paper plates add to the atmosphere. The cheese and onion enchiladas were swimming in cheese and pretty tasty. The $3.25 strawberry margarita was good and cheap though not sure if there was much booze in it. There seems to be two prevailing schools of thought when it comes to Conejito's. Either people absolutely love it because it's (relatively) tasty, super cheap and one of the OG's of Milwaukee Mexican food, or they think it's a filthy shithole. I tend to lean more to the side of "filthy shithole" but that doesn't mean that I refuse to go here. I find that Conejito's is best enjoyed after a certain amount of alcohol, more specifically the moment when you realize "hmm...I better get something in my stomach or face the unpleasant consequences and I really don't want to stop drinking and go to George Webb's". What happens next is you hit up Conejito's for greasy, carb-y, filling food. You now believe you are a rock star and unwisely consume multiple cheap margaritas and end up facing the unpleasant consequences anyway. You vow to never, never, ever behave in such a foolish manner again but you will, because you live in Milwaukee. read more

Scratching my head as I cannot figure out why people think this place is so spectacular. I've been here twice, once inebriated and the other fairly sober. Both times I was feeling totally meh when I left. Food was OK. Definitely edible but nothing worthy of being wowed to come back and get it again. Not sure if the backroom was such a great idea as we usually get better service up front. One napkin for each person is just not enough for the place setting and type of food we were eating. So after asking the server grabs a ridiculously huge stack and splits it in half for our table. Seriously I only needed only one but it was overly generous. This alone wasn't very odd but combined with the fact two other drinks getting pushed onto the tab. Needing to be corrected then offering no apology for the "mistake" we expected the automatic tip as our party was 7 but also noticed they bumped it up to 20% afterwards. When it was originally 15% before the correction. What is going on here? I just hope this was an isolated incident and not the mode. *Buyer beware. In fairness, I have NEVER been a fan of this place. However, occasionally we'll get their food because my partner loves their beans. He was finally disgusted enough to vow never to patronize this place again! He placed our "to go" order and ordered a pitcher of margarita to enjoy while he waited at the bar for them to prepare the meal. They brought him our order, 3 taco's and 3 tostada's and a bill of over $70.00. He questioned the amount. The server disappeared with the bill and brought back a reduced one. The reduced bill was for $62.14. The pitcher was $33.14, an outrageous amount. On top of that there was a "to go" charge on every single charge on the bill. And the icing on the cake was the 18% "service charge" of $9.40. The "service charge" was not gratuity, that was a separate option that of course he left. My boyfriend enjoyed his enchiladas, as well as my enchiladas which he ate for lunch the following day. They probably make the majority of their $ from drinks orders. A margarita is $3.50 (pretty much the same price as your food!), but they provide a good bang for your buck. They offer regular, strawberry, and can also mix the two. I believe a half pitcher is around $17. I feel like Conejito's tries to get as many people in and out as fast as possible. Which is not a problem when I'm busy and want my food quickly. The old expression "you get what you pay for" should be the motto for Conejito's Place. If you are looking for inexpensive eats then this is definitely your place. A couple of years ago I would have given this place 3 stars but my last two experiences lowered the rating. First, let's start with what works at this place....the beans! If you are a vegetarian I wouldn't touch them because I am sure that they are filled with lard to make them so darn tasty. Next time we go we will get two orders of the beans and chips and call it a day. The steak tacos were inedible last time and the enchiladas had no mole sauce just dripping amounts of cheese and chicken. I used to love the steak tacos and they just don't taste the same. I am not expecting anything gourmet here but I expect things to be edible. I know that there have been a few spin off restaurants from people who used to work here: LaLa's in Cudahy and La Casa De Alberto (6th and National). I wonder if this and the owner's death have anything to do with the reduction in food quality. It never was a five star place but everything was at least edible. Personally, if you aren't doing a late night stop I would hit La Casa De Alberto which isn't far away. The prices are very similar but the food quality is much better.
