I just came to this salon after Oliver transferred here from down the street. I have been seeing him on and off for about 3-4 years, as I only get my hair done every 3-4 months or so, and often get it done when I have more free time while visiting family out of town. I have always been happy with Oliver's work, and he has always been great about dealing with the outgrowth from another stylist's highlight job. I have long naturally light to medium brown hair that I put blond highlights in, and sometimes dark lowlights. I like it to look like a natural blonde - light brown mix color, and not like a fake bleached out blond look, and Oliver always delivers. He really has an eye for hair color and I like the fact that I don't have to give him much direction. He can instantly look at my hair and know what to do with it, no matter what shape it happens to be in. He is great at cutting hair as well, but I usually just get a simple trim, so I am not in as good a position to judge that. I am picky about my colorists though, and he fits the bill! Oliver has a quick, no-nonsense, but friendly style about him. Sometimes I wish he wasn't quite so rough about handling my head, but I can deal with that when the result speaks for itself. Plus, I guess a little rough handling get the job done faster, as I don't have to spend as long getting my hair done with him as I do with other stylists. The salon itself looks nice and updated with comfortable chairs and all the amenities I need. Don't worry if you don't know the area that well and assume that its going to be a dive since its west of Western on Chicago Ave. Its not! Its nice inside and feels safe. read more

It's been a while since my experience here, but my hair still isn't back to normal. I went in to have my just past shoulder length hair bleached in February of last year and ended up walking out with a pixie chemical hair cut. The stylist who bleached my hair put 10 volume bleach on and left it on my hair for almost three hours. At one point, I went to find him in the back because I hadn't seen him in a while and found him sleeping in one of the shampoo chairs. When the bleach was rinsed from my hair, my hair was so damaged it was the texture of straw and was stretching and breaking apart. The stylist handed me the hair brush and tried to have me brush out my hair because he couldn't do it. He ended up having to cut off about 14 inches of my hair. He also left me alone in the salon for about half an hour with the toner in my hair while he went down the street to walk his dog. Then he had the audacity to charge me $150. I was so in shock that I actually paid him. This place is a joke and should be shut down. Don't ever go here if you value the health of your hair. My hair has grown out, but the bottom is still super brittle and tends to break off. Also, I sent the salon an email about my experience and never received a reply. read more

The salon is very clean and chic. Juanita is very personable and makes you feel extremely comfortable. Every time I see her now I feel like I am at home and I have known her for quite some time. I love this place! On a whim I went to Connection Salon today after an hour or so of research on Yelp. Brad was my stylist and he was absolutely fantastic. I had no idea what sort of a haircut I wanted and didn't really give him much to go on ("uhh...anywhere from ear to shoulder is fine..."). I know that can be pretty dangerous, but I was really sick of my long hair and just wanted it gone. Brad knew exactly what to do, first cutting my naturally curly hair while wet, then blow drying and flat ironing it, and finally styling it into a super cute shoulder length layered 'do. He is now one of the few hairstylists that I will trust my sometimes difficult thick curly/sometimes very straight hair to. And the price? $40 with their Yelp promotion! I am very pleased with my haircut and will definitely return soon. read more

I wanted to get my hair cut, and it had been about four months so at this point I wasn't really too picky about where I went. There was a great groupon now, $40 for 80 worth of services. Moi was amazing! Very friendly and did an amazing job on my hair. He really talked to me about it before just diving in and cutting, which I really like. Most hairstylists are just like, what do you want, he made suggestions based on how often I do my hair and what I do to it on a daily basis. I added an eyebrow wax on since the cut was on $50 I believe. Juanita was amazing. Did a great job on my eyebrows and again, very very sweet. Alejandro is an amazing stylist. His top-notch professional hands made my frizzy hot mess of shamelessly abused hair look effortless and chic. He is not just a stylist, but a hair therapist, and I should be thrown in jail for what I've put my hair through. He is very well mannered and patient with the ever important, often over-looked consultation. Of course, I attempted to continue my abuse by asking for a quote on a Japanese relaxer and highlights. Because he is a professional, he focused on the integrity of my hair, advised against it and prescribed meds for my traumatized tresses. Most stylists would have gone with whatever I had asked, but he didn't. Most people try to get you out the door as fast as they can but Juanita was careful and took her time to do a good job. I just had the BEST haircut with ALEJANDRO! This salon is a diamond in the rough. Alejandro received training and worked for several years at Vidal Sassoon at Water Tower place and now owns Connection Salon in Humboldt Park. (wow! i sound like a commercial for him, haha.. but these are just the things we discussed while he was cutting my hair). The price is reasonable at $50 and I have long hair, but if you're first-time clients, mention Yelp and receive 20% off. I only paid $40! The price doesn't matter in this case because I would've paid even more with the cut I just received from him. I'm new to the city and it's so hard finding hairdressers that will understand you, but Alejandro saw my vision and made me a happy woman. I had never gotten my hair colored before at a salon, never thought I was that type of person, but now I am HOOKED! Oliver did an amazing job fixing my over-bleached, orange-blonde hair. He listened to exactly what I wanted and took the extra time to get it perfect, adding highlights and 3 different shades of color. He also calculated in what it would look like as it faded, so I know I'm set for a while! He also did a deep conditioning treatment and styled it beautifully before I left. I went on a weekday, which is probably much less crowded than weekends. The atmosphere was very relaxed and everyone was very friendly. Only complaint I have is it costed a bit more than I was expecting, but since my hair was a disaster coming in it was worth it! Getting it touched up will be much cheaper. I thought checking in a year after I left my first review would be helpful. So, here we are...over a year later, and I'm still going to Juanita for my brazilian waxes. She's the only person that I let wax my 2 most sensitive areas- the cooch & the eyebrows. Eyebrows set the tone for your face (don't believe me? the next time you are surprised, imagine that look all day long and see how you feel), and well... the cooch needs no explanation. I'm still amazed that Juanita teaches me something new about skin every time I'm there (from moisturizing to avoiding in-grown hairs) A year later and 3 address moves later, I drive an hour just to see Juanita because she's that awesome! I won't be returning to this salon ever. The pedicurist seemed very inexperienced, which showed by the way she roughly pushed by back cuticles on my toes so much that I had tell her she was hurting me. Not a good selection of colors, no soap or bath salts or anything in the tub, just warm water. I am unsure how sanitary everything was because she used a wooden file on my heels, which I know cannot be sanitized properly. The cherry on top of this whole terrible experience was that obviously in fall I wore boots... mind you I've gotten several pedicures in summer off months where shoes are worn and never have I had the pedicurist prematurely tell me that they were set enough to leave. This woman tells me she will put this oil on my nails which will prevent them from smudging, even though they're dry anyway. NOPE. Ruined by the time I got home. Had to get ready to go to a wedding 1.5 hours later and had to take off the polish completely so it didn't show in my peep toe pumps. Worst pedicure experience I've had. read more

I am honestly afraid of hairstylists--my hair's a nightmare--but I knew Yelp wouldn't let me down! Got a super cute trim here from the lovely Airika yesterday, and it survived its first two great tests: being slept in (woke up looking rumpled, but in a good way) and being washed and then promptly...abandoned (looks rumpled--but in a good way). Since I am horrendously lazy about "doing" my hair, the fact that I came out of a shower, sat around in sweatpants and painted all day, and still have fantastic hair is a great testament to Airika's scissor-fu. The people here are also just super rad: I had to reschedule after missing my original appointment, which they were totally cool about, and Airika went above and beyond the call of duty to be sweet and friendly to little new-to-Chicago me. I went here with a groupon not knowing what to expect. I wanted a bikini wax for my upcoming beach vacation, eyebrow wax and maybe a facial, depending on how I felt about the mplace. Let me tell you, Juanita blew me away with her talent! I was apprehensive about the bikini wax, as I'm a little shy about being so "exposed", but Juanita is so nice and welcoming, she made me feel right at ease. She's also very knowledgeable, you can tell she's very smart and is always learning and researching about skin care. She clearly loves her job. I don't know what has taken me so long to get a review on Yelp for Juanita! She is wonderful. I randomly went here to get my eyebrows done because it's so close to my condo. Soon, I was getting facials every so often, having my lip and eyebrows threaded, and gossiping with Juanita. She makes you feel right at home and very comfortable. Her knowledge of the dermalogica products is refreshing and she has helped me find a face wash that doesn't dry me out. Her 30 minute hydrating facial is wonderful as well! I just did microdermabrasion the other week and my skin felt soft as a baby's bottom. Meh, went here for quite some time and had pretty good experiences. After awhile though, I came to lose my rosy-colored glasses. I've gotten waxing done at many different places and am generally pretty resilient. I found that every time I went here though, my skin would become red and irritated much MUCH more than at other places I've gone. Don't know if it was the wax or the particular technique Juanita has. Haircuts are usually pretty good, although for the past 6 months or so it's like every time I ask for - you know, what you did last time - Alejandro just always seems confused about what that means. As for color, I go for the ombre look (same request - can you just touch up what you did last time?- met with dubiousness) and the last time I was there it was just really not acceptable. I've got ashy dark brown hair naturally and the top was completely left alone while the bottom was pretty much...purple. Thing that annoyed me was not so much a bad color but the denial of the stylist that it actually didn't look good. I mean, it's one thing to make a mistake, but don't make me feel like an ass if I point it out, especially if I have to pay $160 and wear it on my head every day, you know? Anyway, I'm just off Connection. Worth a try, but for the price, I think I can do better. read more

The salon was recommended to me by a friend who got her hair done there by a gentleman named Alejandro. I loved her cut, and she seemed very pleased with her experience, so i decided to give it a shot. When i called to make the appointment, Alejandro was already booked, and i was told there was a stylist named Loxy available. When I walked in, i noticed that the salon was very neat and peaceful, which was nice. Loxy was super friendly and we talked for quite some time about what i wanted.
