We've been going to Stables for many years. It used to be that their bar-type food was awesome and the regular dinner items on the menu were not that great. Now, it's completely the opposite. We head there quite a bit to get the Gorgonzola Ribeye or one of the pastas. All cooked with extreme care. Tonight, I had the Peppercorn Ribeye with whiskey cream sauce and the loaded whipped potatoes. Yum! I am stuffed because I ate every last morsel. The steaks are a must-try. Skip the buffalo wings, they're dry and small now....used to be the best thing on the menu. LOL Don't be confused when you enter. The right side is really more of a restaurant side while the left is the bar/grill area. Whichever atmosphere you prefer. Smoking is allowed on the bar side, if that's a factor for you. However, on warmer days it's a non-issue since they open the big garage doors and let the outside air in. Love that feature! Service isn't overly friendly unless you get the right waitress. We entered and were confused which door to go in...left is smoke filled bar (at least it smelt like it) and right was resturant. With only one family in the dining room, it was surprising staff was no where to be found when we arrived and had to be seated. After we were seated, service was quick and friendly. A great small town restaurant and bar! I have been there three times as of this review. I absolutely love the chicken fried chicken meal. I got it with mashed potatoes and white gravy, along with green beans. Very good! I have also had the club sandwich and fries. Again, very good! Service is always great. All three times I have eaten on the restaurant side. I haven't visited the bar side yet. This is one of the most popular places to eat in Kearney. It's always busy. I was recommended this place by Sherry that works in the hotel across the street. The bacon cheeseburger was my order and it was cooked to perfection. The fries were not greasy at all. I watched as other food platters went by and listened to their reactions and everyone seemed impressed. The staff was very friendly and polite. The Long Island Iced Tea in a multitude of flavors was served in what can only be called a fish bowl glass. This place is great! Something for everyone on their menu. Try their breaded mushroom appetizer, breading is different than most and is awesome. After a long drive, we ended up at Stables and were so happy we did! Had a wonderful dinner - great options! Very good salad with delicious house made blue cheese dressing. We did a call in order since they prefer we do so . We ordered and never got our text to let us know the food was ready so we went in to ask . Our food was cold and incorrect . $10 for only three chicken strips and they forgot my fries . My chicken strips were only two inches . All other meals were cold and bland . The only thing that was good was the waffle . I tried to call to let them know and they shrugged it off telling us we didn't pay that even though we did . Told me that we can't do anything . So glad to say worst place in Kearny . Bad service and bad food . I'd rather go to mc Donald's ................ UPDATE ! Since there is two sides to this story I would like to give more update . The one who answered when I complained said I ordered a kids and just kept trying to push me off . Food is good. 2 sides to the bar/restaurant. Bar side is all you need for any sport viewing and the outside patio is great too. If you want a quite setting then restaurant side is where it's at. Only downside is the service is slow but food it worth the fair service. read more

Here is an updated review since the other ones are rather old... This is one of my favorite places to eat in Kearney. I only eat on the restaurant side as I am not a fan of cigarette smoke (bar side). I almost always get the chicken tenders or the buffalo chicken sandwich - both meals are large portions and taste delicious. Their homemade buttermilk ranch and thousand island is also good whether you're dipping or eating it on a garden salad. We always get their fried pickle chips as an appetizer. They are some-what spicy, but so good! I also know that the steak, burgers, and onion rings are a big hit with the regulars. Prices are affordable and the portions are large so go hungry. Unfortunately, I think it is a hit or miss with the service. Some waitresses/waiters have been very attentive and friendly, while others have been too busy messing around in the back to frequently come out and check on your table. This factor only effects their tip, the food is always great. read more

My husband, daughter and I went in for dinner. We were seated in a booth and browsed our menus. There was a table behind us that was ordering when we sat down and the table next to us left shortly after we sat down. The waitress spoke to both tables and walked passed us with no acknowledgement. Two other tables were seated up in the same section and received drinks and we still had no one speak to us. At one point I look and see the hostess looking at us and never did she say anything to anyone. We sat there a minute longer an then got up and left. No one said a word. I called the manager and let him now the situation. There was no apology just asked for my email address so the owner could email us. What a joke. At least apologize and try and act like you care. I live locally and not sure I will be back. Sad because I am all about supporting local businesses. read more

Me and the hubby stopped for dinner. We ordered the potato skins for appetizers, they were very bland and kind of burnt around the edges. My husband ordered the turkey club wrap he said it was pretty good and he enjoyed it. I ordered the taco salad it was crap! The taco salad consisted of iceberg lettuce with taco meat on top little to no cheese and some salsa for a side that was pretty much it and the iceberg lettuce overpowered the entire thing. read more

My wife and I stopped in there Saturday after a football game. Put in our order at 12:30 sharp, two blue burgers, one with fries and the other with cole slaw. At 1:10 we were without food so we decided to leave and left $2 for my tea. The server, which had the entire bar area by herself, said,"your order should be out shortly". We wondered what her definition of shortly was but 40 minutes was long enough waiting. The cook and kitchen staff must not be able to prepare more than one order at a time. For me it's always hit or miss with this restaurant. I went last week and had an amazing cobb salad, but went last month and had a tenderloin that was dry and burnt and more burnt tater tots. Service is pretty slow also. read more

We use to go to stables regularly when we wanted somewhere local and good. Recently I ordered 2 salads to go and was so disappointed when I opened the container. It looked like we got the bottom of what was left in the lettuce bowl. I remember a time when we would order our salads from there and you could open the box and holy light would shine out and the smiles on our faces could tell it all. Instead We had an over priced side salad. I'm not sure if there's new management or what but was highly disappointed. Salad was also missing a few things that normally go on it as well. A surprising find for a small town. Everything from great steaks, to everyday sandwiches. Large variety of items, also serve breakfast.

Stables is a very fun place to hang out at and I have never had any problems, however last night I found a piece of glass in my drink. When I went to management I was simply offered another drink. Humm... no thank you I do not want another drink for all I know there are several other pieces of glass in the ice bin from which you are filling my cup. I have worked in the food and bev. industry for several years. There have been many times I have had to melt my ice down and clean out the ice bin because a glass was broken near it. Great neighborhood restaurant. Variety in the menu, food prepared well, with care. Wait staff is friendly and conscientious. Presentation is always pleasant. Portions very generous. Being a local this was our favorite restaurant. But something has changed. A big turnover in wait staff and the deterioration of food quality has left us to move to J.J.'s homestead across the parking lot and found some of the past Stables employee. Too bad.
