Unbelievable food and top-notch service! So good, we've eaten there three times and gotten take-out (to take back to Vermont!) once in the past three weeks! Everything we've had has been superb. Special appetizers have included Broccoli Rabe & Sausage (have had it three times - wish they'd put it on the menu!), Stuffed Portobellos (two different ways on different nights), and the Pannecotto off the menu. Entrees we have tried from the menu include Homemade Pappardelle Bolognese, Spicy Chicken Gorgonzola and Shrimp Consiglio - as well as an unbelievable chicken special that I can't recall the name of. Whether you're looking for an excellent lunch (including an excellent Lunch Special) or dinner - this should be the place. I came to Consiglio's with my family to celebrate a special occasion and wow, it was a great experience. Consiglios is located near New Haven's Wooster Square, a few steps away from the original Pepe's Pizza. It is a wonderful spot to stroll around, either before or after dinner to experience New Haven's more charming side. Consiglios has been in the neighborhood for 3 generations since the 1930s and the food certainly reflects it. My family loved the food, even my grandparents who typically dislike all cuisines apart from Chinese. We ordered the calamari and Arancini balls as appetizers which were both excellent. The calamari was very lightly battered and fried to perfection, while the arancini balls were savory and filling. Even the house salad, complimentary with the entrees, dressed with basalmic vinaigrette was quite good. By the time our very, very generously portioned entrees arrived, we were quite full. Nonetheless, we ate onwards. My parents were very satisfied with their lasagna and olive and garlic angel hair pasta, the latter which was also enjoyed by my grandpa who managed to eat his whole plate even though he normally eats very little. My grandma loved her pork Marsala and my brother his kitchen pasta. My own shrimp tortellini carbonara was creamy and rich, a cheese lovers dream. I would also be amiss if I didn't mention the wonderful staff. Our waitress was so kind and patient with my grandparents, who were unfamiliar with Italian dining and American customs. She offered them hot water and lemon which they appreciated deeply. She was the sole waitress for the night, but was attentive anyway. Our food took a little long to come, but our overall experience was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to eat large amounts authentic Italian food (they make their own pasta in house!) at a reasonable price in a pretty part of New Haven. read more

Awful service. You will pay a lot and get really bad attitude. Went with my family to eat there tonight. They did not give us the metaphorical middle finger - but it was pretty close. Mistakes in our food orders. The music was far, far too loud. Asked politely several times to turn it down. Not off, but just down so we could hear each speak and the waiter could get our food orders correct. Absolutely no response. So what should have been a fine dining experience was turned into a pub night with lots of shouting. If this were Pizza Hut or an English tavern - fine. But for the money that you will spend at this restaurant - go somewhere else. There are lots of much better restaurants on Wooster Street or in the rest of New Haven - go there. Had such a great time with family at Consiglio's (or Consigliario's LOL as my uncle used to call it!) during my weekend trip to Connecticut. On a Fall weekend evening, I go for cozy and comfort food! Consiglio's was both cozy and had delicious tummy warming comfort food. We ordered fried calamari, bruschetta, and fried mozzarella for appetizers. I ordered the Chicken Rosa for my meal. The linguini was homemade in a pink cream sauce. I love that the chicken had eggplant on top of it since it's always hard for me to decide whether I want chicken or eggplant when I go out for Italian food. If you like all of these things in one dish, you might like the Chicken Rosa. Will not forget to mention that the service was stellar-kind, friendly, and attentive wait staff. I married into a New York "Italian" family who took me to all their favorite places. Most of those were slightly better than Olive Garden, but didn't belong in the same category as my Great Grandmothers pasta fagioli (good old Irish woman, who married an Italian and mastered the cuisine). Beautiful patio, great service and very good gluten free food. Our party of 4 tried a variety of different dishes and it was all good. The server was very knowledgeable on what can be done gluten free for 2 of us who have to eat that way. We loved the fried calamari and yes it can be done gluten free! Also big selection of gluten free pasta which was surprising. I'm hoping they can provide gluten free bread for our next visit since the homemade bread they served to my husband and daughter looked and smelled great. One of our favorite restaurants in New Haven and our favorite restaurant in New Haven's Little Italy. We have come to Consiglio's many times and have had many of the dishes on their menu. They usually have burrata as a special appetizer, and I highly recommend starting with that. Their house made mozzarella is to die for. We've tried many of their entrees and have not been disappointed. As someone who loves basil, their pesto pasta is on point. If I could I would give Consiglio's a zero star review. We ordered our food for take out here. It was a 1 hour wait. After an hour of waiting we walked up to the hostess and asked for our order. They proceeded to tell us they are still working on it. After about 10 minutes of waiting at the front of the restaurant the hostess comes back up and told us they never started the order and it will be another 1 hour wait. It had already been an hour of waiting and they want us to wait 1 more hour. Please note we only ordered 4 dishes. 4 dishes for a 2 hour wait. We were not pleased and had to walk out since we were not allowed to wait in the restaurant because our food was for pick up. I would not recommend. The staff was not pleasant, not coordinated, and not understanding. read more

This is probably my favorite Italian restaurant in the city. Around New Haven Italian restaurants are not in short supply and many have come and gone over the years. But Consiglio's continues to survive after 70 years in business. For my last two visits I ordered their Italian Kitchen Pasta. It consists of homemade meatballs, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, onions and smoked mozzarella in an olive oil and garlic marinara sauce, over rigatoni. I know it may not sound exciting, but it was really good. All pastas are handmade and the tomatoes are imported from Italy. Regarding service, it's always been top notch. The restaurant is small and almost feels like you're dining in somebody's living room (it probably was somebody's living room at one time). So reservations are usually a must for the weekends. By the way, recently they've been offering cooking classes available to the general public for a fee. Info is on their website. Regarding the other guy who said parking on Wooster Street is awful. He's right. Hello? That's why Consiglio's has their own dedicated parking lot directly across the street, which is never full and the envy of all of Wooster Street. read more

Didn't really matter to us because we didn't have to be anywhere quickly. The food was delicious!!! My wife and I have a New Years Eve tradition of trying out a new restaurant in New Haven every year. Consiglio's is a restaurant that I've known about for years but never got around to trying out. I looked on their website to check out their menu, and I saw that they frequently have dinner experiences such as 'Murder Mystery Nights'. I saw that they had one planned for New Years Eve, so I made reservations. Murder Mystery Nights have a three-course prix fixe menu. I was slightly disappointed that we didn't have all the choices from the full menu, but the prix fixe menu did feature some good choices. We started off with some cocktails while we waited for everything to begin: my wife had the limoncello martini and I had the limoncello spritzer. Both were excellent. Later on once our food came, I ordered glasses of Montepulciano and Chianti while my wife ordered a Pomegranate martini. For our appetizer course, we picked and shared the meatballs and arancini. For the entree course, my wife had lobster ravioli and I had the zuppa di pesce (fra diavolo version). We were not disappointed. Meanwhile, we were having a blast with the murder mystery show. There was a story involving four women, one ended up dead, and the diners had to collect clues to find the culprit and the motive. It was essentially the game 'Clue' with live actors. Very few people guessed correctly, but it was still a lot of fun. We were a little disappointed that the dessert course only had two choices: Godiva tiramisu or chocolate mousse cake. I ordered the tiramisu and loved it. My wife doesn't care for tiramisu so she ordered the cake, but it was a little too rich for her and she couldn't finish it. She wished that there had been a dessert option that featured fruit and/or cheesecake. Despite the lack of dessert options, we still had a fantastic time. All of the diners were given glasses of champagne for the stroke of midnight. We recommend Consiglio's and would definitely go back. We're interested in trying out one of their cooking courses. read more

The food was the only positive at this restaurant. The service or should I say the lack of service was shocking. We waited for over 30 min for soft drink refills. We politely asked multiple times. It was only after we expressed our irritation, the waitress said " I put the order in". Really, for soft drinks? (Only the bartender can prepare soft drinks.) I guess the wait staff isn't able to ask the bartender why her table's drinks are taking so long. (We were out of water as well) The owner was in earshot and the waitress told her we were upset. The owner had to speak to the bartender to get our drinks. I would've thought the owner would apologize to a table who ate their entire meal without drinks. We paid our bill which included the charge for the refills. We all had a good laugh about that! Oh well, at least there are plenty of other Italian restaurants to choose from in Little Italy! read more

Once again myself and a group of 12 went to Consiglios last weekend. If you are looking for awesome Italian food in the New Haven area this is a must visit. The food is awesome, the staff is great and you have to say hi to Marie ( everyones Grandma ). When they are in season Marie will sometimes make stuffed artichokes which are super yummy. It is a cute space, very warm and inviting. If you plan on going with more than 2-4 people on a Saturday night go on the early side or late side cause it gets jammed and you will wait. Parking in the area can sometimes be a pain which applies for anyplace you are visiting in downtown New Haven. read more

Don't know how I missed it before but a great find of a restaurant if you don't feel up for apizza. Service was excellent and atmosphere was old school Italian. Quiet enough to talk to one another without shouting. The food, wow was it great. I had the bracciole with Home made pasta and it was delicious. The beef was done to perfection and the red sauce was terrific. Both women had the vodka ravioli and raves about the dish. Friend has the veal parmigiana and gave it a thumbs up. Our night was great I was there with a party of 6. We got in at 5. Our server Marty was wonderful. We celebrated our friends 40th birthday. We spent well over $450. However 5 mins after we paid our check and were finishing our after dinner drinks the hostess/ owner asked us to leave and rush us out. Because they had another party. There was an entire inside dining room that was EMPTY! And as we were leaving she was heard speaking poorly of us. There was plenty of space for the other party to go to. I will not be going there again I can't imagine treating people like this. I work in the hospitality industry and would never treat a party like this when there was space to be had. She had told us this 5 minutes after we paid our bill. We were finishing our beverages (which honestly had 3 sips left). We were upset to say the least. As we left the patio, the hostess was observed to be talking about us to the other party and laughing. We highly recommend not coming to this restaurant. The hostess was rude and rushed us. On December 4, I wrote a letter to the owner of Consiglio's and waited for her response. Since she never did reply to me, I am informing your readers of my complaint. Hello Trish, Friday December 2nd was my wife's birthday. I asked my coworkers and they suggested that we try Consiglio's. I ordered our food to go Check 3391 at 2:44 PM. We drove to New Haven to pick it up. The manager handed me the items and I left. When I got home and I opened my containers. My linguini noodles were over- done and two of the clams were closed. Which made them inedible. The food was cold. (15 minutes later.) My wife noticed a strange metallic taste in her mushroom sauce. I called your manager and spoke with her. She was very rude to me. She supposedly asked the chef who lied and said that all of the clams were open when he placed them in the to go box. We had to throw the $67.63 dinner in the garbage. I had my wife go on the webpage and send an explanation to Trish the owner and wait for her response. We sent a photo of the closed clams. I had not posted anything on Yelp to that point. Came here for dinner with a very large group (20+ people). Service is top notch, very polite and friendly, most seemed college age. The food is very, very good. Flavorful and but not overwhelming, and all entrees were perfectly sized, not too small but not so large that you don't finish it. The pasta wasn't drowned in sauce or too greasy, like at many Italian restaurants. They have gluten-free and whole wheat options. Overall very pleasing experience, definitely recommend for a hearty meal. read more

We were here with a party of 8 for Mystery Night. The mystery turned out to be: where did the waiter lose our credit card. At the end of the event (more on that later) our card was lost. We spent a considerable amount of time, late in the evening shining flashlights looking for the card. Eventually we had to leave, without our card. Just as we were about to call the credit card company, we got a call that the card was found. And two minutes later the restaurant charged us the full amount of our check. Plus a tip that was never authorized. Hospitable--no. Since we were late in leaving, concerned about the security of our card and about to go through the hassle of replacing the card, one would think that they would "comp" the meal--or at the very least reduce the check. Or invite us back for dinner. Nothing! Oh, and the mystery "theater" was lame, the food was meh, the service was slow or nonexistent our table faced a wall, so half of our crowd couldn't see and the bugs were biting. The food was pretty good. The service was very nice. But, the space was sad and old and the carpet smells!! It really is not "charming" to keep a restaurant with oppressive dark lighting, dirty old carpets and RED walls with creepy ugly outdated lamps and decor that looks like the bates hotel. Very distasteful for a restaurant and the carpet is unsanitary. I would never go back unless they do a makeover! Open the front and add windows to let in natural light, take up the carpet and lay down some faux wood ceramic planks, paint the walls a nice light inducing color simple contemporary lighting.... do I really need to design the place myself? read more

Consiglio's outdoor patio has been absolutely wonderful during this pandemic. Thanks to them, we have been able to drive up from NYC to spend time with kids and grandkids eating outside together, even this winter. We love their menu, and have had a chance to sample many of their dishes. The meatballs are superb, and their staff are so nice about delivering them to the table before we've even ordered - there's a little one who loves them, and he just settles right in to eat. Thanks to Consiglio's, we've been able to spend time together with family, outside, but nice and warm with their heat lamps, enjoying really delicious dinners together. They make you feel very welcome and quite comfortable. We really appreciate everything about this place. read more

Enjoyed my experience tonight very much!! First of all, the staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive. They were all so sweet. Drinks were delish!! I had a lemon cello martini and a peach martini. I ordered the pasta with bolonaise and ricotta. It wasn't as meaty as bolonaise usually is but it was very tasty. My husband loved his lobster ravioli with shrimp. We LOVED the back patio. It's so pretty with the ivy covered walls, plants and flowers and the lights. I will visit again for sure!!! read more
