I am an avid rider and have bought my bikes from Virginia Beach location for over 20 years. My wife picked a bike at this Richmond location and payed for it ahead of time. Next day the bike came in but a more expensive bike came in. She decided to switch to that bike and bought one for me as well. In the end,instead of canceling the bike picked out the night before they charged us for three bikes and gave us two. We cannot get them to understand the difference from a debit and a credit! My husband and I visited this bike shop yesterday but left when the salesman, an older gentleman, was very condescending. My husband asked for a bike that the salesman thought was the wrong size. Without asking any other questions he definitively declared that it was the wrong size bike for him. When we explained that has already tried this size bike and liked how it felt, the man responded "well, you can buy whatever you want..." This, of course, is when we said - thank you for your help, have a nice day. Typically, we are glad to let the experts be experts and are grateful for recommendations but the tone here was very patronizing and unnecessary. I was in the middle of a ride when I started feeling some unusualness in my crank which turned out to be the bottom bracket bearings. I managed to get myself over to Conte's, where my bottom bracket was replaced and both my derailleurs were properly tuned in less than 20 minutes and it ended up being cheaper than what was initially expected. Bought a bike for my birthday. 1st ride back derailer was jumping all over the place then chain broke. Call while still in the woods and was told that they wouldn't ship me a new chain and I had to drive 45 mins or 1 1/2 hours so they could put it on. Fixed the chain myself... 2nd ride today (writing this from the woods) same thing. Called again and got a story about " may not be covered because I didn't buy the Conte's protection plan" Bolognese. Had a fitting with Fran Lenahan to resolve some serious saddle problems. Went through the Retul process and really dialed in a better position on the bike. Fran took ample time and used various tweeks to get me more comfortable on the belt but I was overjoyed that he completely fixed my saddle issue. Absolutely no discomfort at all. I've contacted him more than twice since then and he always invites me back to make sure I'm totally satisfied. Fran is passionate about making sure I'm as comfortable and efficient on a bike as possible and good luck finding a nicer guy. I've brought my sons bikes in twice since then (they're rough on them) to serviced unannounced I may add , and every time we have an employee come straight up to us to ask what we need , and in less then an hour the bike is fixed . Today I stopped by Conte's with a friend who was getting a new bike, a fitting and accessories. I already have a bike that I got from a competing store, but I wanted to check out the accessories and just get a feel for this shop. I really liked it! Bill, who did the fitting, was really great at it. Not only did he fit to specifications, but he explained everything he was doing and also gave pointers for maximum efficiency and comfort while riding. You can tell he REALLY loves what he does. Steve, the sales person my friend was working with, was also great -- friendly and helpful. We chatted about my bike, and he offered to give me a free adjustment! My service at Conte's was poor at best. The staff seemed disinterested about my Purchase and did not even know it was available. At pickup we had to wait thru two sales people before we got The bike.No one ever offered to size the bike Or go over the way it works. In sized it the best I could except that several times the seat collapsed on me. Once that was fixed The drake failed. I took the bike back to the store and they fixed the breaks it I had to ask for the seat to be even. I am very disappointed with my purchase and because of that I probably would not buy another bike from you again read more

I needed help getting a bmx for my 10 year old. Conte's recommended a good bike, and when the seat didn't work well, because my son doesn't like the slanted lowered version, I brought it back to them and they had the parts and the seat to fix it. At a reasonable cost. Very helpful, and my son really likes his new bike. Glad to get the good advice. read more

Sleazy used car salesman is what comes to mind with this shop. I ordered a bike to be shipped out of state. They said it had to be set up before shipping which means having to re-pack to ship. Well, re-pack they did, except they just chucked all the parts loose back into the box. The handlebars and front wheel were loose in the box and beat up the paint job severely, plus they forgot to put the kickstand in the box to ship. After repeated calls and several promises the kickstand was shipped, which it never was. I finally drove over to the store next time I was back in town and un-bolted one off a bike hanging on their wall. My fault since I ordered another bike a year later that they normally stock. (not special order). More repeated calls to Charles,,, "my dealer in Utah just shipped it", "let me call you right back", "oh I have it right here and I'll take a picture and text it to you", all which were lies. Never would call back, never took pictures, etc... After waiting a month for a bike from Contes, and never getting any updates or phone calls, I had one shipped from the manufacture itself. The other day I was going through my credit card charges and found a charge from Conte's for the full price of the bike that was never shipped. I called Charles, and got the usual run-a-round. "Oh yeah, I will issue a credit right now, email me your information". Of course the email address doesn't work, it bounces back. (charles@contesbikes.com) It was like pulling teeth to get them to credit my card for the money they shouldn't have charged in the first place. This whole store is based on bs'ing the customer and lying to them. It starts from the top, and moves down through the employees. This place is a nightmare. Shop here at your own risk. read more

So, I just moved to Richmond, and I needed to get my bike in shape after it had been in a box for five years. And I'm looking through the reviews of bike shops. This one had crappy star ratings, but I read all of the reviews, and while I'm sure the participants were frustrated by their experiences for good reasons, every one of the written reviews actually sounded like just the place I wanted to take my bike. I'm not trying to call Yelpers out on their reviews--everyone has bad experiences. And maybe the Yelpers just don't know how positive their negative reviews sound! I actually expected to feel negatively about this place, but then Brandon pointed out that they didn't call--but his bike was ready on time. I'm not sure that's "dodging a bullet." Sounds good to me! Why should they call with info I know? Courtney's review made me laugh, I admit. She gave them one-star, but I learned that they buy out old bike shops so that they can sell used bikes (though they don't always have them), and they're a high-end shop, which is the kind of place I want to get repairs. They also let her know they'd build a bike she bought elsewhere. That sounds like great service. I know Courtney didn't like the experience, but that all sounded good to me. It does sound like they might have a not-so-great saleschick, based on GW and Alexandria's experiences, but GW gave them a poor review after their "great" mechanic and the owner worked hard to fix that chick's mistake--as fast as they could. Annoying, yes? But to me, the willingness to fix an error as best as one can is...well, the best. And then there may have been some salesmanning with Alexandria, but again, she let me know that they were willing to do what she needed for free, so that sounds like a good thing to me. They're in bike sales, and no one can make you buy anything, so I'm okay with a salesperson approach, as long as they know what they're selling. As for me, I walked in and Charles Conte himself welcomed me, and really knew my bike, even though I'm not sure they sold Diamondbacks there. It turns out he'd also ridden in at least one of the AIDS Rides that I did from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and I felt a real connection to him. As we evaluated what my bike needed, he was checking with the mechanic to make sure certain things were included, got me some awesome but cheap tires, tried to figure out how I could save money on what needed to be fixed, etc. Not only that, but he and the mechanic stayed there until 15 minutes after closing with me--after we'd already spent 20 minutes looking my bike (The Goat) over--to wrap up what I'd be getting on the ticket. I told Charles about the poor Yelp reviews (which I hadn't read at the time), and he was really disappointed to hear about them. He loves Yelp and shopping local. I suggested he attend the upcoming happy hour at The Rox on Thursday, and we talked a lot about Yelp--he was glad to hear we had a new community manager. He's been more involved with northern Virginia Yelp! Anyway, my experience at Conte's was exactly the kind of Yelp business experience I want to have. I shopped local. I shook the hand of the owner. I talked Yelp! I talked community! And I know exactly what I'm paying for (and how much) when I go back in later this week. My goal is to have the house unpacked before the bike comes back. We'll see... I just got here a couple weeks ago! And so far, I love Conte's! They know bikes. read more

My husband and I stopped in to Conte's to check out a bike for me to ride to work. I asked about used bike (they are kept in the back) and the owner kept saying "oh, we are getting a bunch of bikes in on Friday since I bought out an old shop. You should come in on Friday" Then I asked again, "oh great, but what do you have today?" He kept pushing me to come back Friday and wouldn't show me any used bikes. So sketchy! This was so disappointing since I had heard good things from friends. I will give them another shot so I can test ride the bike I am interested in buying, but I am not hopeful they will improve. UPDATE: We went back today to see the sale/used bikes that came in. Shockingly after I asked about used bikes for commuting, the owner asked me if I was thinking under $1,500! What the heck, who buys a used commuter bike for over or anywhere near $1,500?! They really push the sell and it is annoying. They said they would even put together a bike if I bought it elsewhere. They have a lot of good bikes and are very knowledgeable, but they don't have many road bikes in the price range I was looking for, which was in the $350 range. Plus, the owner said I would "love" the Cannondale someone traded in, but I took it for a test ride and it was too fast for me. I fell over into the grass because it was hard to squeeze the breaks due to me sitting in the upright position. It was more like a speed bike than a road bike. Then I tried a used Diamondback and liked it, but it was really scratched up. After that, I tried a new Giant bike. I fell over again because the seat was too high for me. They re-adjusted the seat to my liking, but the bike was out of my price range. If I'm paying $350, I want it to be new. Why would I want a used bike? Eventually, I went to Performance Bikes across the street and purchased a NEW Diamondback for $350 ($367 with tax). read more

Dropped my bike off for a free tune-up (free tune ups for life!) and asked a few questions and told them what I was concerned about. Went to pick the bike up when they said it'd be ready AND it was ready! Guy said he called (didn't) but they dodged a bullet by getting it done on time. My disc brakes work better than they ever have. Shifting, while I never had a problem, seems to be just a tad bit better. The mechanic even replaced a brake cable crimp that was missing (serious attention to detail). BUT on my mom's 80s Schwinn we were charged $180 for two tires and a 'tune up.' There is no indexed shifting, they didn't adjust ANYTHING else. Pretty much robbery. Will not be returning now that I've found another Giant dealer in town. So strike two and two.5 on these visits. This is the best bicycle shop I have been to in Richmond and I say that after buying a bicycle from Agee's 4 years ago. Agee's doesn't have anything on Conte's Bicycle. At Conte's, the owner greeted me and went over all my options with me including new bikes and used bikes. I brought my bike in to be traded and actually ended up getting my current bicycle upgraded instead of buying a new or used one. After a couple of weeks of riding it, I realized that I should have just gone ahead and bought a road bike so I went back with my bicycle and Charles gave me all the money I had put into the bike a few weeks ago PLUS money for my trade and he is building me me a road bike from various used parts. By doing this, I am getting a bike I would NEVER be able to afford brand new. Charles really knows how to treat his customers. He is the most knowledgeable person I have ever spoken to about bicycles and he truly wants to help his customers get into the best bicycle they can that will make them happy. Took a week longer than expected for my bike to arrive. Once they had it for a week it still wasn't assembled, even though we told them we needed it ready as we were coming thru Richmond to go on a vacation. Had to wait almost an hour for assembly. The mechanic who assembled it was great, the manager on duty was good too and did everything he could do to accomadate his saleswomans mistakes. Unprofessional sales staff, I would recommend buying elsewhere. read more

*My review is based on Service only* I bought a groupon deal for a tune up, never been here before even though it is quite close to home. I showed up at 6:05pm to drop off my bike and they were closed.. I was upset because the website said that the hours were to 7pm however they had winter hours that I didn't know about and they closed at 6pm. A nice female at the desk saw me in my disappointing state as I was walking the bike back to the car and she allowed me to come in and drop the bike off for service, I thought this was really nice. Because of the groupon deal she told me it would be a while because there were LOTS of people dropping bikes off for tune ups etc.. This was understandable and I wasn't really in a rush or anything. It took about a week or so, I didn't really keep track. I also gave them a chain to put on for me in addition to the tune up groupon and they did not charge me for the chain installation! Rode the bike today, it's feeling good as new, brakes are great, crank feels tight. A+ read more

Purchased a used bike and two helmets from Charles. Debated between 2 and 3 stars for a while. Beef with the bike: He totally talked it up and led me to believe he was giving me a WAY better deal than I was (I was privy to the numbers and didn't really care, I was getting what I wanted -a used cargo bike for less than retail- so I let it go). Just annoying. My beef with the helmets: After talking about life spans of helmets he sold me one with a manufacture date of 2009 (6-7years old!) and I didn't notice until I got home. Ugh. They don't do returns so I exchanged it for a "new" one manufactured *only* two years ago. My beef with a purchase I didn't get to make: I had also talked to Charles about getting a Yepp mini (child seat) installed and he said they just got an order of every color (though he couldn't tell me what my color options were and referred me to yepp's website) and to email which color I'd like and they'd put it on for me before I picked up my bike in four days. Emailed and called a couple of times about the seat, picked it up without. Glad a trusty retailer down the road carries them. read more

I have been very pleased with my Conte's experiences. From the moment you walk in you feel like everyone is there to help, and if they are busy with another customer they make sure to acknowledge you and let you know they'll help momentarily. I bought my first road bike here and every step of the way it was obvious that my best interest was in mind. Bikes are definitely not cheap items, but not once did I feel like anyone was trying to get me to buy extranious items (and there were a few times when I was referred to another place to buy some items). I absolutely love my bike (Diadora) and travel out of my way just to get my products and advice from Conte's. On a side note, Stephen is absolutely amazing and really makes you feel like you're the only one in the store. As soon as you walk in his face lights up and he is always ready to help you out. He remembers your back story, what you have bought, and gives you honest and reliable help. Steven is one of those people you only find every so often, and Conte's is lucky to have snagged him. I would most definitely recommend Conte's to someone who is searching for a bike (especially those who do not know much), because everything that goes into choosing the right bike can be very overwhelming and you need someone who you can trust to help you out. Super helpful, super cool, super fast and super reasonable on price. I've got a 2005-ish Giant TCR2 road bike with some faulty shifters that I tried (and failed) to fix myself. They fixed them up and serviced the bike in 2 days and it rides like a champ. I don't want to point any fingers, but the new bike shop across the street tried to sell me a brand new bike when I went in for an estimate. They claimed that by the time they repaired the shifters and serviced my bike I would be closing in on the cost of a new $1000 bike. Needles to say, Conte's did it for much less (MUCH less) and I couldn't be happier. read more

My wife and I purchased his/hers MTBs and Erin is the young lady who helped us. We had been shopping for bikes for a while, and even left Conte's to check some other places. Came back and bought there. I had an issue with one of the peddles the next day and they took care of me. Went back looking for some flats to switch out with my clipless, and they didn't have what I wanted, but loaned me a set so I could ride flats until I could get them. That was really nice and so far I am really happy with them. I'll have our bikes back for a fall tune, and a bike I am building, but will need some help with, will go to them also. read more

Fell in love with Conte's when they went above and beyond to help me...my husband has had very positive experiences here, too...bought his bike here and has had good, reliable service on his bike when needed. When I went to the Short Pump location recently, my request was off-the-wall: I needed a used wheel for a craft project, and the guys in the shop happily provided two. When I went back a few days later to sheepishly ask if someone could show me how to remove the tire from one (I hadn't asked on my first visit), I got service with a smile, and I believe it was from the owner himself. Not only did he remove the tire, he gave me advice on cleaning the wheel and after wiping it down, gave me a few of the mechanics' disposable cleaning towels he had been using so I could shine them up as much as I wanted... All at 5:40 p.m., twenty minutes before closing, which is when employees at most shops would have probably told me to come back the next day or check elsewhere. This is clearly above and beyond. I am a new fan of Conte's and will do business with them in the future! read more

Hey, Went to Contes in short pump to get my son and his fiance a new bike. Charles sold both of them two bikes that were fantastic!! One was a new but used slightly scott and it looked like it came out of the box. The second, looked new also. A trek that also had great components. Could not beat the price or the quality of both... I think the bikes were worth a thousand dollars more than they paid... I went there after the sale and had my bike in for adjustments. The repair man (Ben) was a pro. He knew exactly what had to be done and in record time. Price? Nothing. I dont get all the lousey reviews. I was treated professionally, with expert service and they know how to take of a customer. I have been using Conte's mechanic since they opened, working to keep my two old bikes ride-able. Their location has been great for me - close to home and office, and the fact that they have Sunday hours is so convenient. Chris, the mechanic, is always very friendly, super helpful, and patient with all the questions I ask. This past weekend when I decided it was time to look for a new mountain bike, I stopped in. Chris pulled out a couple of bikes to check which size would be best, then after asking me about my "ride style" he selected a few bikes for me to try out. After testing them out and asking more questions, I took the plunge and bought a new bike. My first new bike ever! This is probably the first bicycle shop I've ever been into where the staff acts borderline unprofessional, and downright just a tad sleazy with their sales pitches. Both times I visited the store I went to test ride a bike. The first time, the gal on the floor was so sweet. I liked her, but she didn't seem to know a lot about bicycles. The second time, I had to wait quite some time before anyone said hello. The owner and another worker were on their phones--maybe chatting with customers-- I don't know. Plus, I was the only person in the store, so it's not like they were super busy. Finally my boyfriend is approached by a lady who works there and he tells her I want to test ride a particular bike I've had my eyes on. She literally pulls it out and walks away while saying, "Alright, it's ready!" Being that I am a woman of tall stature, I usually get extra help when it comes to test riding a bike. You know, making sure the seat isn't too low and all. I asked, "Do you think this seat is high enough?" and she brushed it off and said "Oh, definitely"--without even checking! I could tell by looking at it that the seat was too short, so good thing I brought my OWN bike tool. Thanks lady. SO THEN (Yes, I may be venting) we notice that the tires aren't just flat--they are superbly flat. They were so flat that I wasn't even on the bike and the rim was touching the floor. So, I bring the bike back in. Wait at that stupid front desk while both of them are on their phones (good god, thinking about this is pissing me off), and then FINALLY the owner turns around to greet me. I tell him, he puts air in the tires. I ride the bike--almost bought it that day, but realized something didn't feel right about the fit. I told him and he says, "Well this frame is for people 5'11-6'2 sooo..." And I said, "Yeah, but the it doesn't fit me... I can tell... the handlebars feel too low." And then he does this wack sales pitch where he says that they charge $250 for a custom fitting, but he will go call and ask his pro if he can do it for me. "Sometimes he'll do special things for people." He calls him up and 10 seconds later he tells me it can be done for free. Oh my god! For free? This must be so rare! The owner kept trying to push this 'deal' on me, so I walked out. Homegirl sees right through bad salesmen. Lost a sale, dudes. Agees is WAY better. I walk into Agees and it seems as though real cyclists are there helping to ensure you get the right bike for you. Isn't that what all bike shops should be like? Dang. read more

Not sure about the sales end of it but the mechanic here did a fantastic job full-tuning up my 17 year old Cannondale and even threw in v-brakes with my upgraded shocks without going over the the amount they told me the cost would be. Wheels were trued better than years, upgraded my grip shifts and adjusted my headset for my older back. Thumbs up! Also, lady at register was a friendly and super nice. read more
