While the building is large, the 'shop area' is small, consisting of an L shaped counter, a few shelves with some pantry staples, and two refrigerated cases with beverages, yogurt, and cheeses. There was a steady stream of foot traffic while I was there, people mostly popping in to get a few pies for lunch or stocking up on bread. The line moved quickly and efficiently and we were in and out in no time at all. Their pricing is reasonable and the quality of the food is excellent. We spent just about $100 today, but came home with dozens of spinach and meat pies to share and enough bread to stock our freezer for a few weeks. Definitely worth the drive. Pro tip: order one day ahead for 'party size' spinach and meat pies - a smaller version of their traditional pies - which are perfect for any party or family get together.

There's nothing pretentious about the place and no attempt to turn a simple bakery into some sort of trendy destination. You walk in, you're greeted by incredibly friendly people, and there's a very good selection of pastries and baked goods staring back at you. The variety is impressive considering the size of the shop, and I usually end up leaving with more than I originally intended to buy. The coffee is also very good, which matters to me. There's something about getting a good cup of coffee alongside a fresh pastry from a neighborhood bakery that just works. Silver Star gets that combination right without making a production out of it. The prices are another big plus. Everything feels reasonably priced, especially compared with what you can end up paying at some of the newer bakeries and cafés. You're getting good food, good coffee, friendly service, and that genuine neighborhood-bakery atmosphere without feeling like you're being charged extra for the privilege. Five stars from me. Silver Star is exactly the kind of bakery I hope Rhode Island continues to hold onto. Small, friendly, affordable, plenty of good pastries, and no unnecessary fuss.
