I've never been to Cook Out before because I didn't grow up in a place that had Cook Out. The value here is insane! You can get an entree, 2 sides, and a drink for just $8. I got the double burger, quesadilla and cajun fry side, and a coke float. The burger was good, the quesadilla was average, cajun fries could've been crispier, and the coke float was great. For the value, can't complain. There are ~10 tables inside if you want to sit down, or the drive through is open late. The bathrooms are well designed - the handle to pull is on the outside so when you exit, you don't have to touch the door again. read more

I love this place. They do not have them in the northeast. They have to have the best selection of milkshakes ever. I have been into this one twice while visiting the city of Asheville. Both times the person at the counter gave me immediate service. They were very nice and my milkshake was ready within 10 minutes. They have such a wide variety. And they use real food in the milkshakes. My banana fudge milkshake was the best and had real chunks of bananas inside the milkshake. I also got a cherry cheesecake milkshake and that milkshake had actual pieces of cheesecake with real cherries inside. Cook Out has been getting a lot of good press lately as an up and coming fast food chain, so I decided to check them out for lunch today. Now, I don't get it. OK, but nothing special or notable. Service was good, the food did not imperss. I had their 1/4 lb "Out West" burger, (bacon & BBQ sauce). The burger was overcooked and small, not much flavor over all. My wife had a small burger and was happy, but she's an easy grader. The cajun fries had a hint of cajun flavor, but could have been crispier. The cappuccino shake was tasty but way too thick, I could hardly drink it thru a straw. After it had sat for an hour it was much more drinkable. Prices were lower than I expected, but for my money, I'd rather get a Mickey D's quarter pounder. Adequate, but likely won't be back. Next day update: Dropped score from 3 stars to 1. Spent about four hours after lunch yesterday with my gut turning inside out. Maybe from letting the shake melt a bit and thin out? Not good. read more

Have you heard about Cook Out? Me neither. Apparently, it's a southern-only fast food joint that serves fried chicken sandwiches, burgers, and milkshakes. They had me at fried chicken sandwiches. After returning from Sierra Nevada, we required food to nosh. And this fit the bill on Patton Avenue. For my money, I enjoyed a spicy chicken sandwich with mini corndogs, and a peanut butter banana milkshake. Yeah, definitely not watching calories here. Just went for the tilt and I'm so glad I did. This did the trick after I had some beers at the brewery. While I enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich and the corn dogs were tasty, I really loved the peanut butter banana milkshake, which holy fuck on a stick, this was amazing! I enjoyed every drop of the milkshake as I ate the chicken sandwich and mini corndogs. That held me over for a while needless to say. read more

I love Cook-Out, but this is probably the worst once I've ever been to. The indoor dining has been closed for awhile due to COVID-19, which is understandable. However our fries were old and the slaw was just cabbage with no Mayo or flavoring. The worst part was I ate half of my burger without hitting any burger patty. First time to a Cook Out restaurant and I have to see it was a pleasant experience. Got the Burger w/cheese and two side. The burger was hot and juicy with a nice fresh bun, lettuce and pickles. The fries and onion rings were hot and crispy. Even the unsweet tea was very good. We went in at lunch. The parking lot was nearly full and the Drive-Thru was 8-10 cars deep. Literally THE worst food I've ever experienced. I ordered a burger with slaw and onion rings. Apparently it's a damn kids meal because I got 3 onion rings and they were burnt. I recently took a cross country road trip and my route took me through Asheville. We met up with some friends of ours and the consuming of beers would ensue. After a few hours of this we were all tired and weary from our hard fought battle with the duel wielded 30 packs of Pabst. We needed some nourishment, and we needed it fast! We didn't know what to order or what was available. They suggested Cook Out. Being a New England transplant to Austin, I had never heard of this "Cook Out" they spoke of. We hit the road and good times would be had! We showed up at around 3 am and we had two dining options, drive thru and a walk up window with patio seating available. We opted for the patio seating and walk up, which ended up being an excellent choice! Our food came out very fast and it was super fresh. The best part of the patio however was the random assortment of Asheville locals that were all around. Some of these people were hilarious! As far as food goes I opted for the Cheeseburger Tray. This came with the sandwich, 2 sides (I chose chicken nuggets and fries) and a premium milk shake (I chose the Cheerwine Float, if you have never had Cheerwine, GET IT, its a local NC delicacy) I also decided to add a hot dog with extra onions. Having ordered this mass amount of food I easily though my food would be over $10, but I was pleasantly surprised when the cashier said my total was a little over $6 dollars! We were in Asheville for my birthday and I was baffled by how early everything closed in downtown. We wanted to try something we knew we wouldn't be able to get at home, so we decided upon this place since it was right down the road from our hotel. I was so intrigued by this place. The layout reminds me of a Checker's: two drive thru sides with a walk-up window. The menu is a bit overwhelming to a first timer like myself. You mean I can get a cajun chicken sandwich WITH a quesadilla?! And with a bacon wrap?! And a coke float? For less than $5? This surely can't be right. Okay, I didn't really get that exact combination, but it's all true! If you order the Tray, you can pick between several different sandwiches and two sides or double up on one side plus a drink (or a little extra for a float.) I did order the cajun chicken sandwich and it was the best "fast food" chicken I think I've ever had. They truly mean "Cook Out" taste. It was seasoned to perfection and was just juicy enough where it didn't make a mess everywhere when I bit into it. Dry? Not at all. I did double up on the fries because my brain just could not grasp the idea that I could order something else for the same price. My fiance did go all out. He got the BBQ chicken sandwich, bacon wrap, fries and a coke float. Needless to say, we ate everything. We did have to wait about 10 minutes since there was an "issue" with one of grills &/or employee and our chicken had to be cooked again since the first ones ended up burnt and black. The manager came to the window, apologized and gave us refills on our drinks as we waited. We knew this was something out of our control and we were on vacation, so we didn't let it bother us. Preface: I am not a fast food guy AT ALL. Tonite I visited cookout for the second time and the first thing that comes to mind is WOW! As an avid burger fan, like many of us yelpers, I try to avoid fast food joints. They're burgers are usually tasteless skimpy patties, fried to a place well past overlooked and topped with weak condiments and underripe veggies. Cookout doesn't fall into that category. I had the cookout tray, a burger and a selection of two sides from a wide assortment, including coleslaw, hush puppies, onion rings, fries, chicken nuggets and more. I had the "out west" style burger, a nicely portioned patty that was obviously not fried and topped with bacon, cheese, mayo, Bbq sauce and a healthy helping of pickles, tomatoes and onion. I was skeptical at first, perhaps because of my high expectations of what a quality burger is and where they can be attained, but I was pleasantly surprised by a juicy patty, appropriate amounts of condiments SPREAD on the bun as opposed to being splashed in the center of it, and a tasty helping of bacon that was warm and virtually grease free. On the side I had fries and chicken nuggets, a fried carb overload but sometimes a man must do what a man must do right? The chicken nuggets were good. They were definitely out of a frozen bag of a thousand but they were fried well done and crispy on the outside. My compliments to the pimply high school aged chef who prepared them. The fries were tasty, albeit slightly soggy, but well done enough that they weren't pasty white (undercooked fries are a pet peeve of mine). They just needed a little more salt. The icing on the proverbial cake was the mint Oreo milkshake, made with soft serve ice cream and real Oreo cookies. Not exactly the gourmet shake you can get at The Hop but it was tasty. I was thoroughly satisfied and quite full after, all for a mere $7. Face it, this isn't a place I'd want to be a well known regular at, but for the combination of convenience, price point and hours of service this is probably the best late late night place open. read more

Went out of our way after going to Biltmore mansion because of our great experience in Tennessee a week earlier. We did not regret our 2nd trip to Cookout. Great shakes, fast service here, and I am going to have to learn to make my own hush puppies, since you can't get them at restaurants around here. And the onion rings are really, really good as well. The chili cheese fries were what dreams are made of... creamy gooey cheese and ballpark style chili, these are good for a hangover if you have one. I've always loved cookout and this location has always been great. But there's one lady who's name on the ticket is Faye who's never nice. She forgot the hush puppies on the tray and when we explained to her what happened she gave us attitude. We even had to drive back around and wait through the line again, since we paid for it all to begin with. We also ordered a large Coke and were given a medium. When we asked about the size she very rudely said "that's a large whereas this is a huge" talking about a tea, while laughing when she's the one who messed up first. Just extremely rude and uncalled for behavior working in customer service. Something needs to be said about the behavior and how to talk to customers.
