Extremely unimpressed with Cookouts night cooks. Nights at cookout are always a gamble but tonight is one of the worst I've had in a while. Burger was barley put together, patties were simultaneous charred and cold somehow, and the onion rings/fries were soggy like they had been left sitting out for a couple hours. I was once screamed at by a woman for asking for a Burger with everything on it. To quote her, "what the hell you mean everything?" On another occasion I was shorted a chicken strip (3 instead of 4), and despite the fact that my receipt clearly said "2 two strip" an employee I believe was the manager insisted that they came in groups of three and that I had only been charged for one order. I've probably been to this location at least a dozen times in my 6+ years in Asheville. My order has been correct every single time, fries are always hot and perfectly salted, burgers are tasty as hell, and ah man the hush puppies are great. Staff have always been super efficient and pleasant; it can't be easy to work there when it's slammed! Kudos to the folks there. Come to Cook Out only if you value quantity over quality. I've had two meals from here and both have been very disappointing. The burgers managed to be dry and greasy at the same time. My hot dog bun dissentigrated before I could eat it...the dog itself was cold. I will give them 2 stars for their shakes. Those are good. read more

We have eaten there several times. It is always busy with two rows of cars ordering, and you can find a parking spot in the shade to eat while the burger is hot. We like the Cookout Style hamburger best because of the great flavors - mustard, onions, chili, lettuce and other goodies inside, plus a nice hunk of charbroiled burger. Yum. The food was good at this location but the service was horrible when I showed up I had to wait 5 -10 minutes for someone to show up and take my order. No one came to apologize or even say "hey were busy but someone will be right with you". Also the staff lacked portly in manners. Worst cookout I've ever been to, I just got off work and was starving and cookout was one of my only options at 11:00pm. All my food was as dry as dog food I asked for queso sauce on my quesadilla and paid extra for it and they couldn't handle putting the sauce on the damn quesadilla, my burger was also dry and tasted like dog shit. Visited the Cook Out on Patton Ave. late Friday night and experienced what can only be described as a disgusting mess. A total meltdown of cleanliness standards. I complained to the manager on duty, and in my opinion, she seemed completely overwhelmed and totally unable to manage the situation. The place was totally filthy, and rather than shut it down to clean up, she kept serving customers. Told me it was company policy to never turn away a customer. Is it also company policy to serve customers surrounded by a disgusting unsanitary mess in the dining room, not to mention the kitchen? The mess was not made by customers, but rather by an employee who was supposedly cleaning up. Instead, she just threw everything on the floor, right in front of customers. The manager told me the woman who was "cleaning" was angry. Well, I guess so! I can't believe she wasn't at best, sent home, or at worst, fired on the spot. All the pics were taken around 3 AM Saturday morning, about an hour before closing while there were several customers in the dining room. The chicken tenders were AWESOME, better than McDonald's any day and they are open LATE! woot that's what I'm talking about. And you get soooooo much food for your money, wowzers! I actually love the coke float at cook out. This place is always busy. They have tasty burgers, I prefer the cheddar style with the grilled onions. My husband is a huge shake fan and loves the variety they offer. This is a fast food place so don't expect 5 star sit down restaurant. Even though they do have indoor and outdoor seating. The young folks who work here seem to make it a fun place while working and the service is very quick. read more

Quite possibly the worst service ever received in a fast food restaurant. 20 minutes after placing our order, I approached the counter to determine the status of my order (3 cookout trays, not an order for 20 people). I was told they were waiting for the fries to be done. Ok, I have seen cars going through the drive-thru, but I will assume none of them ordered fries. 15 minutes later, approached again and took my food without fries. Nobody ever brought fries, had to approach counter 3rd time to get the rest of my meals. Will never return to this location (Cookout #84, patton ave asheville). After having eaten there many times, I still think 5 Guys offers a slightly better tasting burger. 5 Guys fries are definitely better than Cook Out's. If you want selection then you must come here. The burger is delicious and being able to choose two sides which include choices for basically a second main dish (corn dog, chicken nuggets, etc.) is pretty awesome. The milkshakes were pretty amazing too. The main reason I liked this place so much was because it literally had the "cook out" menu that you're used to seeing at an actual cook out. All the burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, french fries and ice cream you could ask for! Nothing major to choose if you are watching your weight, however :( read more

Normally I really like their burgers but the last few times I have been, the food has been going downhill in terms of taste and appearance. This last visit may have just stopped me from going back for a while. The corn dog we got for our little guy looked like it had been dropped on the floor and stepped on. Honestly. The burgers were maybe 2.5 inch diameter and they tasted really bad like they had charcoal on them maybe. Dry and tasteless otherwise. Not just one, but all of them. The side of chili comes in an already tiny cup and then was only half full. The wait time for the food made me think we were at least going to get fresh but I have tasted 2nd day leftovers that were better. I hate they have gone this way. We had been meaning to try this place. Today, we stopped at the Cook Out on Patton Ave. The place was very clean. This was Friday noon, and you can tell it's a popular stop for lunch. My husband and I both ordered the cook-out tray - I had the 1/4-lb burger with fries and chili, and my husband had the burger with onion rings and slaw. Looking at the menu board, it's unbelievable how much food you can actually order for the cost of the tray. Our burgers were really good - a bit gooey and messy but good! I didn't get to try an onion ring, my hub ate them too fast! :-( I wasn't a fan of the slaw - not that it was bad, it was just sweeter than I like (I prefer tangy). The fries were fine. Chili was pretty good. It was just a little condensed for anything other than for dipping fries or smearing on the burger - it was too concentrated to eat like a bowl of chili. Still very good, though! I would definitely come back to try more menu items. read more

Yesterday I was running errands and needed a quick bite. I had never heard of Cook Out but decided to give a try. Man oh man, I was not disappointed. All I ordered was a burger - with onions, cheese and bacon. Without a doubt that was the BEST hamburger I have EVER had outside of a 4 star restaurant. I am amazed at how good the food was, just wish they had a menu so I could get my husband to pick it up on the way home. Now that I know they're open late, I'm psyched. WOW!!! I hardly take the time to write a review on anything but this is something people should know. Cook out has real thick juicy burgers. And when they say cook out, it tastes just as if I was at my uncles cookout. I have been eating these wanna-be double stackers at the usual overly commercial fast food places (you know where) and kept thinking to myself why do they say thick burger when it's a bunch of thin nasty meat. But when I tried my first cookout burger and I just couldn't believe it was a thick real burger, and not some thin burgers that taste like cardboard. The fries are good but even better when they had that cajun seasoning i think. Anyways, I hope they stay the same way and not try to change like other places with the whole thinner burger. And I hope people read this and just try it once and I know they'll see why I took my time to even write a review. I arrived very late and needed something to eat. I was relieved to find out that Cook Out was open. I brought back a pulled pork sandwich and some sides, along with a milkshake. The food is cheap and good for the price. The staff is always friendly and so in short they are a good little burger place with good customer service and good quality given the cheap price. However, they are the most environmentally irresponsible restaurant that I have ever seen by far. Everything is packed like a to go order, and everything is tossed away. Even the condiments are presented in the most wasteful way possible. I realize that being cheap comes at a price. I'm not expecting organic beef or anything like that, but come on. There is already a pile of trash in the Pacific Ocean that is larger than the state of Texas floating around. If everyone wasted as much as cookout then that land mass would quadruple. If you eat there notice how it would be nearly impossible to be more wasteful than they already are, and they really do seem clueless to this.
