Fast Food, Milkshakes, Cheap, Good! What can I say...I'm a fan of this fast food chain! Sometimes taking my family to a sit down restaurant just isn't an option for many reasons...cost...time...etc. but I HATE McDonalds and I'm sick of Wendy's! Soooo if there is a cookout near by we go there. I feel like the food is much healthier then your average fast food joint. So Many options and you get a ton of food for under $6. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich platter and it comes with 2 sides so French fries and onion rings it is. And of course I get a shake. Their shakes are amazing!!! Thick and an insane amount of flavor choices. The hot dog platter is perfect for my 2 little ones because it comes with 2 dogs. Then my older has a burger. Order it anyway you like tons of toppings. Pretty good for fast food! The $5 tray is the best way to go-so much food! I got the chicken tenders, fries, a drink, AND a quesadilla for that price-you really can't beat it. The burgers have a really nice chargrilled flavor! Would recommend this over McDonald's or Burger King if you're craving some good ole greasy fast food. read more

After driving past this place for months now and continuing to see lines around the building and a full parking lot I decided I would take my girl friend here and see what all the hype was about. We were able to take the last available parking spot and we went on in. There wasn't much room between the main door and the counter so we had to step aside and attempt to decipher the menu. The print was small, oddly colored and the order of the menu was confusing to me. We had to let several people go ahead of us while we decided what we were going to order. The service was fine, and it didn't take long for our food to come out. I got a double burger w/ fries, my girl friend got a hot dog w/ onion rings. The hot dog was something we could have gotten from the fridge at home with some canned cheese and chilli. The onion rings were a frozen product which wasn't very exciting. My burger was ok, definitely nothing to rave about. The patties were very THIN and small (NOT thick and juicy as a previous reviewer claimed). The fries were not bad. We were just baffled by the fact that there were so many people lining up around the block for this mediocre food. There was definitely nothing special about this place (I read a few reviews about good shakes so maybe I would stop by and try one of those sometime). I had to bump them up a notch because of the milkshakes. I have had the Orange Push-Up, Cappuccino, Mint Oreo, Mint Chocolate Chip and Cherry. It doesn't make a lick of sense how good those are. The "newness" of the establishment has worn off, so it's easier to get in and out of there now. Still not a fan of their food, and still think they should change the name to the Chill Out. read more

As good as Fast food gets!! Love the double lane drive through, the burgers are pretty darn good love the different toppings and the Onion rings the dogs are spot on again the double lane drive in makes it much faster than others. The only issue is the super large menu to much to take in and it's a little confusing and small on the menu board. read more

Apparently this place is big farther down south. It's a fast food place that says it tastes like outdoor bbq. The menu is huge! They have an option where you can choose a main meal like a burger, chicken, or bbq sandwich. Then you choose two sides which...honestly are the weirdest sides ever. You have the norms like fries or onion rings or cole slaw. Then they get funky with it: corn dog, chicken nuggets, or a chicken wrap. You can have the option of making your fries Cajun..I did it and it was a weird combination of old bay seasoning and herbs. Decent food, super cheap, and incredibly bad for you. I've maybe eaten here three times and my first two experiences were great. I had gotten a chicken tender tray with onion rings and hush puppies. I had gotten my food to go and when I got home and opened my tray it appeared the lid was dirty-like it was used and the styrofoam had nasty looking markings in it. There was also some sort of paper trash for a hamburger in the bottom of my tray. Im a bit sad about this experience bc previously its been really filling food for a good price I just don't know if my stomach can handle going back here :( read more

I had to create an account just this place. Me and a buddy came here from the military circle theatre and was finding ourselves hungry, so I saw this place because I was so tired of the franchise fast food. It looked like a good place, really clean and decent. I had a couple of questions about the menu and the cashiers help me out and were friendly. When we got our food, it was delicious. Can't speak for inside as I always use their drive-in, in every location I go to. 1 - the hush puppies are delicious. I can't go to cook out and not have hush puppies. As for everything else, pretty much what you'd expect. 2 - Cheap, fast service. 3 - Milkshakes are a must when ordering your tray. I wish I could say which one is the best but I am always sold on the cookies & cream flavored one. 4 - Good for when you're in a rush, don't wanna spend a bunch either, and still get enough food and then some. read more

The prices can't be beat, and the food is pretty good. The shakes are really good, but some flavors are better than others. I am a huge fan of the Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, but I tried a strawberry shake the other day and, while tasty, it lacked pizzazz. Would have been great if I could have tasted actual chunks of strawberry in it. The burgers and chicken taste like they came off your backyard grill, but like you used the cheapest beef and didn't really season it much. Better than a lot of fast food burgers, but definitely not at the top of the heap, either. Same with the grilled chicken. Fries and other accompaniments are good, but again, not stellar. The best thing is what you pay for what you get. The prices are pretty fantastic. You can get the "Cook Out Tray" which includes the main entrée, a choice of two sides (which includes corn dogs, by the way) and a shake for less than $8. They charge for a cup of water, which I don't like, but if you're having a shake, you need something to quench the thirst. This will definitely be a somewhat regular stop for me, but isn't quite the epitome of fast food, either. read more

Went through the drive thru, just to get home and find my order having literally 4 fries in the box and still missing two of my wraps. Went back to the store and stood at the desk for 5 minutes before a CUSTOMER at the front of the line asked if I had a question for them. The own employee's that were staring at me holding my bag never asked. Proceeded to tell them what was wrong and they fixed it. No apology / barely even talked to me honestly. burgers were good and fast. tasted like fresh ground beef not frozen patties. my toddler had chicken nuggets and she enjoyed them. the fries were salty but overall this place was okay! it's just at a weird spot of the highway and they have people in the parking lot directing traffic and their drive thru... because it gets congested. read more

Cookout is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The name is fitting because the food tastes like you are at... well a cookout. The burgers have a taste that is straight off the grill and the fries are well seasoned. Even the chicken sandwich are great. Also try the hush puppies they are great too even though they don't sell seafood. read more

They have great fast food type foods, with home cooked flavor, and the "tray" value meal is an amazing deal for all the food you get.

This place is awful...the past two times I've gone they messed up my order, this past time I asked for two chicken strip trays...I got two hot dog trays!!! My first time going to Cook Out in Norfolk Janaf Shopping Center. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. The cashier didn't speak loud enough through the intercom. She repeated my order super fast, I could understand her. It was not a race to the marathon. I made her repeat it again. She had a bad attitude. My first time here and had a pretty good experience. Had a bad experience with the new Steak 'n Shake so this had to make up for it. I got the double burger with chili and mustard on it.. It was meh.. Pretty small and the mustard kind of threw the whole taste off.. I also got a chili cheese fry and those were pretty good.. Last but certainly not least, the shake..omg!! That shake alone put 2 extra stars... I got the peach cobbler and it was AMAZING. Chunks of sliced peaches and crunchy (not soggy) pieces of crust.. Will def keep trying the milkshakes! This place takes for ever to take the order right. First time I went it was all wrong. Second time the girl took a long time to hear me out. She then got an attitude about taking my order. Delicious, juicy burger, great (and not greasy) fries, thick, yummy shake, even hush puppies (and a variety of other sides)...this place had really good food at a really good price! I see complaints about the wait... had NO WAIT when I got there, however I arrived shortly before noon. I would go back to Cook-Out in a heartbeat! You cannot get food like this anywhere else. I am not saying it is the best food ever, I am just saying it tastes like cook out food. Like what you would cook out on a summer day with family and friends. Just like that! The prices are amazing too. Everyone here complains about the portions in their tray, well, for the $5 it costs, it is an amazing deal. Even if you dont get the tray, but separate items, it is more expensive but the portions are larger, and the price is still good. Their milkshakes are great!!! I am usually a fan of this place but my last experience left me grossed out. Stopped by for a quick lunch. While waiting in line I noticed an employee taking trash to the dumpster while wearing an apron. Once I got to the window, I asked the manager wasthat common. He told me the law only rrequires the removal of an apron when entering a restroom. Eww! Whether it's law or not, common sense and decency would say remove apron while handing thrash.
