Food is always good, but more importantly the staff is world-class. Dealing with a chaotic late-night crowd, the Manager was keeping the orders running and keeping the long lines moving swiftly. The employee running the register (didn't get his name) was friendly, timely, and knowledgeable about the menu. I know it's fast food but slow down! Wait in line half your life, get to the window and they act like you're bothering them by asking for condiments & utensils. Rushing me away from the window yet failing to provide ALL of MY order (i.e Fancy Shake). Then to top it all off... This is the must visit place every time I come back to visit VCU. This fast food place is way better than McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. The place is only for to go, no dine in but they have few chairs outside but I don't think anyone want to eat in the cold during winter. I usually order the Richmond combo, which you order an entree, two sides and a drink for only $4.59 and if you want a milkshake the add another dollar on top of that. I think this is a great deal for college's students, especially after a night of drinks (since I usually want to grab Korean BBQ). I usually order Richmond combo (chicken double burger, chicken wraps and bacon wraps with huge tea. Those four items definitely fill me up every time. The price has always been the same since they opened. I went through the drive thru on a night when cookout was uncharacteristically slow. Placed my order and proceeded to the checkout window. Paid and waited for the meal. Then the unthinkable... The drive through attendant apparantly had an issue with the fact that my companion and I appeared to be of a different ethnic backgroukgound, and she voiced her opinion loud enough that my passenger and I both heard her hate filled opinion. Finally tried the shakes. Opened til the early AM's, we drove through giggling and you know what? We tried the shakes. At $2.69 for a 16oz (?) cup of ice cream plus whatever crazy combo your heart desires to put in the mix, this is a well-worth-your-calories late night snack. My choice? Strawberries + oreos. Another winning combo is banana pudding + banana. Yes, it was good. Stick it in your freezer and it'll still be soft enough to enjoy the following day, if you have any leftover that is. 5 stars in the fast food department, 3 stars overall. I had never been to a Cookout until I moved to Raleigh a few years ago. Apparently its a staple in NC, and my coworkers were eager to let me experience the greatness. I am happy they finally came to Virginia. The food isn't bad and it's definitely been a lifesaver during many drunken nights back in college, but BEWARE of the conduct of employees. I have never been a huge fan of this place. It is cheap and the food comes out quick. I remember a place as a kid called Hot N Now that has cheap food quick and that is what cookout reminds me off. The last 5 or 6 times I have been here they have forgotten something in my order. From sauces that I asked if they were in the bag and told yes, to missing fries and even a shake. They are in such a rush to get you through the line there doesn't seem to be any quality control. I understand why people like to come here but also you can tell by the lack of lines that it isn't as popular as when it first opened. I can only assume that it is due to the lack of quality control and rushing customers through the line. There have been multiple times I told myself I wasn't going back and it looks like that is the case again but for real now. I was in the area looking for something to eat after 2am and was surprised to see they were open until 4am. I kept my order fairly simple, a cheeseburger tray with hush puppies and onion rings and a large sweet tea, all for under $6. Overall it's a decent value for the money, but I primarily eat for taste, and I wasn't tremendously impressed. The burger was fine, maybe a step up from the average burger chain, but I could honestly make a better tasting burger at home. The tea was great, perfectly sweetened, the hush puppies were decent, though I did not care for the onion rings. I do appreciate that they have Cheerwine at the fountain machine, which I don't normally see outside of NC. I'd consider coming back to try the other offerings like the wide variety of shakes and I see there's a Cajun chicken which sounds promising. read more

I said hello a few times but no one was on the other end, by this time the car in front of me had already left the property so I pulled up to the window and they asked me "what was your order." A step above places like McD's but below Chick Fil A and Arby's in terms of presentation and nutrition. One of the greatest things about cookout is the price! You can get a "tray" for $5 which will come with an entree and two sides. I personally like the A1 style burger, chicken nuggets, chicken quesadillas, cheese fries, BBQ sandwiches...scratch that, I like everything. One of the outliers of the menu is the milkshake. You. Have. To. Try. It. I'm very particular about consistency of foods and the milkshake comes out extremely think. After a few minutes it melts into the perfect milkshake yumminess. Not sure why the lines are so long here. The burgers are all cooked well done and are nothing to write home about. Not flavorful, not juicy. The fries were fresh and fabulous. The chocolate shake was super thick but just okay. Not eating here again. Maybe my problem is that I am comparing this to Fuddrucker's in Ashland where the burgers are made to order, big, juicy and the best in the metro area.They spoil you for any other fast food burger. I love Cook Out. I was Excited when they came to Richmond, and I remain excited. They have impressively good hush-puppies, served fresh enough from the frier that they can melt your styrofoam takeout container, and the milkshakes are disgustingly good.
