Brisket is amazing! Jalapeño Mac and cheese is to die for! Chopped beef sandwich was ok, more like a really good sloppy joe. All the sides we had were amazing but the jalapeño Mac and cheese and peach cobbler were the standouts. We came around 11 on Monday and had no line. read more

Beef ribs where ok. The sides where mediocre but nothing bad, maybe some more pepper in the potato salad. The reason for one stars is the beef briskit was horrible. Worst I have ever had in my life. A fatty mess with a sliver of soggy meat in the middle. I expect meat to be included with my brisket at 19 bucks a pound. They should be ashamed of themselves serving up such a poor excuse of a meal. I wouldn't eat that briskit if I was starving to death. I can't believe anyone would recommend this place. Me and the boyfriend took a little road trip to Austin not too long ago. Austin is known for their barbecue so of course we had to have some on our trip. Cooper's was close to our hotel so we decided to go. Cooper's was pretty packed. We had to wait in line for 10-15 minutes. I didn't think that was too long of a wait. I read good things about it so I really wanted to try it. I'm very glad we tried it because everything was delicious. I had some of the lean brisket and turkey. Both were SO good! They both had great flavors. I also liked that the lean brisket didn't have any fat at all. Sometimes other bbq places have lean brisket but there's still fat! This wasn't an issue at Cooper's. The turkey had a smoked flavor and no fat either. The corn on the cob was also delish! Since it was so crowded inside, we sat outside in their back patio. It was alright but kind of too dark. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the service could've been better. The guy who was helping us wasn't friendly at all. He was sort of intimidating to be honest. He was a big and tall guy who wasn't in the best of moods. Maybe he was frustrated because of the crowd, who knows? Would I go back to Cooper's? Oh yeah! First time at Coopers. Loved the turkey; super moist and flavorful. The brisket was ok. The jalapeño and bacon Mac n Cheese would bring me back just for that. Red skin potato salad was good but no "wow" factor. I also had the jalapeño sausage and I really enjoyed the spiciness of this with a good Smokey flavor to boot. We were in Austin for a wedding and were short on time so waiting in hours of lines for bbq was not an option. We were very happy we decided to stop in for a quick lunch here. The ribs were awesome and so was the brisket. The service was awesome and the cashiers and counter workers were so friendly and helpful. The sides were great and so were the meats. The most underrated part of it all was the free beans and condiments (sauces, pickles, onions). The beans were my favorite side and they were free and all you can eat. We went to more than one BBQ joint during our trip to Austin and Cooper's has me dreaming about their brisket. Cooper's is what I think of when I hear Texas BBQ. Their decor, the friendly faces and of course, amazing food! You walk up to the window where a friendly man cuts whatever meat you want and then you get your sides (cold you pick up yourself, hot are plated for you) then to the register. The seasoning on the brisket was SO good, nothing like I've had before. They have stations for drinks, bread and butter available if you'd like as well as AMAZING pinto beans, onions and pickles to complete your meal. As we finished up and were refilling drinks and using the bathroom the staff was so friendly and asked how our meals were. They weren't doing it out of compliance, they genuinely wanted to make sure everything met our standards. Several of us stood and talked to the staff about our meals and what we were doing in Austin. I appreciate that level of hospitality and the fact that they wanted to make sure we had a pleasurable experience. Service is a huge factor for me when visiting any establishment and the experience we got at Cooper's is one that will stick in my mind. Ok pissed. $32 for this. Supposed to be so good. I can make ribs 10 times better in crock pot. That one beef rib $18 the two small I mean small pork ribs $8. I had to pull the meat off the bone.  Sauces sucked big time. I could not wait to leave and just packed up I was so disgusted. How the hell does a place like that stay in business. Was not even mediocre. I would never recommend this place. I don't get the reviews. I work for a major airline and eat BBQ all over the country and this ranks as the worst. Not only for price but taste. The sauces were so unimpressive I don't think they put any thought into it at all. The baked potato was the best thing! Any other place I would have gotten two sides a full rack of ribs and a drink for this price. I didn't even get a drink with the $32 by the way and if you think I'm just upset about the price, I'm not. This was a fun experience. You give your meat order to the first employee you encounter at the line, they slap it on your plate. The next guy takes it and cuts it up for you while you pick out your sides. The last guy gets you desserts and anything else you'd like before checkout. Checkout at the end and he directs you to unlimited beans, condiments, etc... Family style seating in long picnic table format, big jars of help yourself jalapeños and condiments on the tables. If you like sausage the jalapeño cheddar sausage was as goo as any I have ever had. This place was pretty cool. The Bar-B-Que wasn't exactly my style but it was still good. The Mac n cheese was probably some of the best I've ever had...which is kinda expected from a bbq joint. The thing that carried this place for me was the style. Old building, you walk up to a meat counter to order, they dip it in bbq sauce right in front of you, then you grab your sides and go pay. There was a bit of a line to get your food but plenty of seating for a Sunday afternoon. The pork ribs were a bit tough but the brisket was incredible. Live music upstairs afterwards was a nice touch. Not sure if I would go back or not but worth checking out once to say you've been there. read more

This has to be the worst BBQ in Texas. Maybe if you weren't born in Austin, brisket that's been smoked for two hours and sat on a lukewarm grill after that is good but I found it shameful. The sauce is weak and likened to watery ketchup, but the meat isn't tender at all. On top of that, the price is incredibly steep. I'd pay that much for good BBQ, but this is a total rip off. I will say the staff is nice, the place is clean and interesting. There's a bar and a decent amount of seating. If you're from out of town and want to try TX BBQ, AVOID COOPER'S. The first time I tried Coopers I wasn't a big fan. Instead of a thick BBQ sauce I was accustomed to, they had some sort of a broth like watery sauce. The brisket was more fat than meat (even though I had asked for lean) and the sides felt pretty pricey for what they were. Since I worked downtown I made several more trips to Coopers with coworkers and one day realized that there was something amazing at Coopers I couldn't get anywhere else. The beef ribs here are absolutely amazing, and as shocked as I am to say it, the sauce actually goes pretty well with them. I still occasionally order brisket from them, having gone there so many times now, I've realized how to make sure I get lean brisket and the cuts I want. read more

Nice place right next to my hotel (JW Marriott). I was looking for something small and quick for a late dinner and came across this place. I really wasn't thinking BBQ, but it was convenient. Seems like it's how BBQ places are done in Austin, with a line-up to tell them what meat you want (wide variety, sold by the pound), then you pick your sides (i.e., green beans, potato salad, corn, etc.,) and then cash-out. Like I said, I wasn't too hungry and it was late, so I just picked a slice of pork roast dipped in some thin sauce and got a prepared salad to go. They had a fixin's bar with sliced white bread, BBQ sauce, pickles, and onions (an Austin thing?) with to go containers. The seating was pretty good, but it is a popular place so it was full. My slice of pork was pretty thick, but I wished I'd gotten two! It was so tender and delicious. I usually make a point of not going to the same place twice when I visit a city, but if I had time, I would have gone back when I had a bigger appetite. Highly recommend! read more

Walking into Cooper's is like walking back in time. The aroma of hickory smoked meat is almost too much to take. The brisket is a perfect amalgamation of meat, fat and the fire kissed edges. The beef ribs are beyond heavenly. And then there is the jalapeño Mac and cheese. Dear Lord! I needed a nap. Cooper's on Congress is worth the time invested. I went in and thought I would be enjoying some BBQ right now. Someone told me it was good so why not, right? All the food looked amazing but when trying tO decide what I wanted (sides) I was told "no we don't let you taste the food." I had to spend the full 4 dollars to try it to see if I liked it. I'm not from Austin so I've never had this happen. After ordering my meat it totaled to almost 15 dollars without sides, I let the young lady at the register know that I wouldn't be purchasing and left the store. read more

We couldn't get into another place in Austin so we went to Yelp and once again Yelp comes through. Right in the heart of Austin and just a few blocks from the capitol, I haven't been able to find more authentic Texas BBQ and I've been to Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston and San Antonio. We were a family group of 7 and this place was perfect . Cafeteria style, you order your meats first , then pick your sides and drinks. Coopers has complimentary pinto brand which are rich in flavor . We tried the brisket ( with and without burnt ends) , beef ribs ,the chicken and the turkey. All was juicy and bursting with flavor . The potato salad was unique in that it was more of a mashed potato salad. However it was absolutely delicious . Kids are macaroni and cheese and we're super happy. We finished it off with the blackberry and the pecan cobbler . I highly recommend both . So, when in Austin, make it a point to go to Coopers. They have an outdoor patio for eating and they asked have an upstairs area for additional seating and music/dancing. read more

Ribs and jalapeno mac and cheese were great. The bbq sauce they make is some sort of vinegar based sauce but wasn't really anything to write home about. PRICEY TOURIST TRAP (which worked on us). While the ambiance is sorta cool, albeit overdone, the food is INEDIBLY SALTY. We wanted to go to Franklin BBQ or La Barbecue, but both were closed, so we came here. After paying $15 for parking (!!?!), we paid almost $50 for a pound of meat, some sides, and some sodas. Both the macaroni-n-cheese and beans were literally too salty to eat. One of my ribs had basically no meat on it. There are few things worse than wasting money and a meal opportunity while on vacation in a foodie city, so don't waste either here. You'd be better off parking somewhere on 6th and taking your chances on the first random cool-looking thing you come across. Any food truck would be better than this. I've had better BBQ in gas stations. Aside from the food, the toilets in the women's room are so low (and the stall walls so high) that I literally saw the butt of the woman in the stall by the sink. Overall, a pricey letdown that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. If I had to choose between here and Taco Bell, I'd go to Taco Bell...and I hate Taco Bell. read more

I am not a BBQ connoisseur, in fact, BBQ is not really a favorite of mine. Went here because my husband loves BBQ and it was next door to the JW (our hotel). I have to admit the line to order food and ordering by the pound is unusual especially at dinner, but the staff are very nice and accommodating, they are happy to cut a piece to visualize how much a 1/4 lb of meat is, and the line moves quick. The staff have the service down to a science. We had the pork loin, brisket, beef ribs, and sirloin. My favorite was the pork loin, very tasty, moist and lean. My husband thought it all good. As everyone raves about the peach cobbler, we partook. Very, very good. Don't forget the ala mode! With so many BBQ places in Austin, I do not know that we would be back without trying others first, but the food was good and it was open on Sunday. Other information (not a part of my rating): very loud, seating is either at the bar, or long tables and benches. There is an upstairs that we did not check out, but there was live music and it was loud, even downstairs at the bar. read more
