So it's been 18 months since we last came here. I have to say that the service and the food was even better than my last review. We had an amazing waitress, Masey. As I told her boss, she didn't need to be taught customer service, she just owns it and is amazing. The pizza was very fresh and took about 20 minutes with a busy and almost full restaurant. The tables and the whole area of the restaurant was very clean and watching the cooks and salad bar servers work you can tell they take special attention to cleanliness and watch for cross contamination. One of the best taco pizzas I've ever had. I'm not in the least bit an advocate for thin crust but their pizza is freaking fantastic. The service at this establishment was pretty bad to nonexistent. The food and value were good, not great. Upon arriving there were two employees 'lounging' on the pavement of the restaurant leaning against the building smoking cigarettes with the kitchen door open. When we left there were three employees sitting on the ground smoking. This probably explains why it took almost 30 minutes for us to get our entrees. But, time management aside that just isn't a good look for a place, right? It sends a certain message. Our waitress promptly seated us, brought us drinks, took our order and did not come back for 20 minutes. We served ourselves refills for our drinks and my partner thankfully had ordered the salad bar so he was able to eat something. We were really taken aback at the abandonment... it was not very busy and other tables seemed to have capable waitresses. Finally after 30 minutes or so we were served our chicken. It was over-done and not hot out of the fryer. It was obvious it too, like us, had been forgotten. Even overcooked it was good chicken and the sides were fine except for the coleslaw which possibly had turned and was inedible. The salad bar was acceptable and the soup was good. As you might expect we waited forever for the bill until finally we got up to go find her and get our bill so we could leave. What should have been an easy in and out, quick, late lunch turned into an hour of "your waitress is on a smoke break if you need anything check the parking lot". Disappointing experience. read more

I've tried this place twice. Each time I've gone there I've left feeling entirely screwed. The first I went with a group of four. We got a table next to the salad bar, which is nothing near a good value. We ordered our food... added the $0.50 for cheese, $1.00 for fries, $0.25 for the straw to go in the drink, and $5.00 for a smile from the waitress. All of a sudden my cheeseburger had cost me $42.00. Hmm... And to be honest, it really wasn't remarkable. The second time I went was right before closing. My family had just gotten into town and they were hungry. When we walked in, the waitress made it very clear to us in her tactless way that we were not welcome because we would keep her there past the 9:00p closing time when she apparently had planned to get out of there and go get stoned or something. Apparently the prospect of a good hefty tip at the end of the night did not inspire her. Instead she listed off a laundry list of places in town that she suspected would be serving dinner still - places I knew were closed. I don't appreciate businesses like these, regardless of how nice their building and their signage is. If I want to pay for my food by the ingredient only to get attitude mounded on top of it all, I'll go to the grocery section at Wal-Mart. read more

Ok, i grew up here in norhern wi, and i returned here with my husband because i had fond memories from when i was a kid. So i really wanted it to be good. We had just finished a 34 mile epic mountain bike ride, and let me tell you that after burning 5000 calories, DIRT tastes good. OMG, i have never had such poor pizza in my entire adult life. Seems to be made of a hin cardboard material. Here was very little sauce, so i ordered more as a side. Mistake. Almost no seasoning or salt. Pretty much tasted like tomato pulp. The toppings were sepArated from the cardboard by a layer of grease, which prevented them from sticking, so every time you pick up a piece you get the cardboard but the toppings slide right off and have to be rescued. On a hot summer day the thermostat was set to 78 degrees. We spent most of the time waving flies away from our food. The hostess just stared at us when we walked in. No greeting. So i was like, um, hi? Table for two? If dead animal decor is your thing maybe thats one thing to like. Try another place. read more

I don't like this place. We've eaten here once each of the past two summers while in Hayward for vacation. I had the buffalo chicken pizza this time, and it was not good. Plenty spicy, which is great, but otherwise a flavor "meh". My kids didn't even like their chicken fingers, which is crazy town. I do acknowledge that I may be alone in my ho-hum attitude for this place as each time we have been there it has been PACKED. The decor is very location appropriate, and the giant fish tank is fun for the kids. Service was fine, though a bit slow, but not bad given how busy it was. Before, I start the review, I want to say I wish I could give 3.5 stars. 4 is being generous but 3 seems low. So, there's that. My husband and I came up to Hayward for a short vacation before the school year started and we ordered Coop's for takeout on our first night because we wanted to relax in our cabin. The chicken at Coops is awesome. Very juicy, flavorful, and the crisp on the skin is delicious. We also got the cole slaw as a side and that was good, too, so we were happy that we selected that since it had the right amount of creaminess to the ingredients (raise your hand if you hate overly creamy cole slaw!) If I were to judge Coops on the chicken alone, it would be 4.5/5 stars. The pizza is an entirely different story. We ordered a small Hawaiian pizza and like other reviews have said, the toppings literally slid off as soon as you took it out of the box. It was also just okay. We actually didn't eat the leftovers, which never happens since it's well, pizza. I am a big crust person and the crust at Coops lacked flavor and it also wasn't very crisp. We had pizza a couple days later at Nelson Lake Lodge and it was 5x better than the pizza at Coops. Nelson Lake Lodge isn't situated in the heart of Hayward, but if you are looking for crispy crust and a good flavor profile, I strongly suggest going there instead. read more

Haven't been in the restaurant since Covid. Stopped in over the weekend to pick up a take out order. Not one single worker... server, counter worker, cook or kitchen staff was wearing a mask. Nobody but myself and a couple that was also waiting for a pick up order. I guess that's small town America, but Hayward is a tourist town. So disappointed to see that they weren't taking the simplest of safety precautions to keep their staff and customers safe. I won't be going back to Coop's anytime soon. read more

The pizza is the best. The perfect crust, a light flakey hand-tossed dough. Although they tend to overcook the crust espesially if u order more than 2-3 toppings. Keep it simple so u dont get charred blackened crust. (I think they need to cook heavily topped pizzas on a pan & send it thru 1.5 - 2 times, or set their oven to a little more broil) The made to order pizza is way better than the buffet pizza. Almost to the point they may lose business from people trying their buffet pizza and not making it back so find out how good their pizza can be. The Pizza buffet is still dang good but could be much better. They refuse to put any toppings on any pizza for the buffet. Systematically 1 pepperoni or sausage per 2 pieces of pizza. The salad bar is pretty good. Good assortment with 2 soups. But the french onion everyday is boring. (Not a fan) And the pasta salads have way way too much dressings. The pasta salads would be very good, but as is, they're pretty much like eating spoonfuls of mayo. Don't get me wrong, Coops is a really cool restaurant and a GREAT place to eat. Nice place, looks like from floor to ceiling everything is made of light wood. Locals love it, I'm an implant and I don't care for it. Overall, lots of pizza for too much money, in my opinion since I don't really like it, but my boyfriend loves it so we keep going back. It feels like a lot of sauce but really just lots of grease, so much that it's a miracle if the cheese and toppings do not slide off when you pick a piece up, weird super thin crust, and just the flavor overall had a nasty during and after taste. Eating in, the view is pretty nice since there is a huge wall to wall fish tank in there, there is also an outdoor eating area that can make for a great eating spot during the few weeks of awesome weather we get. -2 stars because I don't care for their food but I do think it's worth a shot, seems like a hit or miss kind of pizza. By far the worst customer service I've ever received, I was appalled with our waitress. Do not go here unless you're ok paying for undercooked pizza with incorrect toppings.. It started when ordering a pizza I asked specifically for bacon and not Canadian bacon. When the pizza came out undercooked with Canadian bacon on it I informed the waitress. She told me I was wrong and ordered Canadian bacon, then we watched her walk around showing many employees the pizza, everyone sniffed it and put their faces in it. She brought it back 5 minutes later only cooking it for a little longer. I told her the topping was still wrong and that I watched everyone sniff it and stick their face in it. She then took the pizza in back and came back out telling me I had to pay for it. When we were shocked they asked us to pay, she claimed there were no managers on and that she would try to talk to someone. We refused to wait and left cash for the soda we drank. Okay, so I really did not like Coop's. We spotted the restaurant as we arrived into Hayward and were immediately excited at the idea of pizza as a great way to end a long drive to Hayward from Milwaukee. I did my due diligence and brought up some "research" (ahem, Yelp) We decided to press onward, despite the mixed reviews. I'm sad to say I should've heeded the less than flattering reviews, as they were right. Positives: - Free wifi - A cool fishtank - What appeared to be nice 4-person booths along large windows a the front (we were not seated there) Negatives: - A very dark seating area by the fishtank - Surly service that was not attentive (we couldn't catch anyone's attention for refills even though they weren't terribly busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff) - Bad food: We ordered mini corndogs as an appetizer...pretty sure these were bought in the freezer aisle of the grocery store... and a pepperoni pizza. I should have been wary when the menu advertised that they proudly use Hormel products; everything tasted like it had been bought in a kit from the grocery store - packaged pizza dough with no flavor, processed cheese, very mildly flavored sauce, and minimal pepperoni (it was under the cheese andI could barely taste it) The pizza itself kept falling apart - the crust underneath wasn't evenly spread out as one peice, but seemed to have come apart before baking and then was pressed back together. This made eating it pretty difficult. - The be-ponytailed employee dressed in regular clothes (no uniform) who came out of the kitchen and helped himself to soda from the fountain just across from our table, then stood there drinking it and refilling it for some period of time... just unprofessional and weird to see someone helping themselves in the middle of the dining room. Meh: The pricing was more expensive than I'd like to have paid for subpar food, service, and atmosphere, but cheaper than other alternatives. Unfortunately we really didn't enjoy Coop's, and I don't plan a return visit. I would encourage others considering it to steer clear and find an alternative spot for their meal. It is disappointing, because I think that a restaurant concept like Coop's is perfect for the area, but the execution just lacked too much. read more

After reading the 7 review, 3 star average I decided to give it a try because I was in the mood for pizza and I admit it, I have a hard time turning down the chance to try out a new lunch pizza buffet. I should have gone across the street for the Gyro instead. Nice looking building and an outdoorsy hunting / fishing kind of decor with lots of dead fish & animals on the wall and a big aquarium. I decided to sit by the aquarium, went up to the salad bar for some soup & salad. When I came back & sat down, I noticed a bad smell, like when a dead fish washes up on shore and has been there for a few days. I looked in the aquarium and there was a pretty good sized dead crappie laying in the tank with other fish nibbling away at it. The family sitting next to me seemed to find it quite interesting. I found it a bit nauseating, especially when the really big fish noticed what was going on, chased away the other little fish and began mauling what was left of the poor dead Crappie. Ok, back to the food. The homeade chicken noodle soup was not one of the better ones I have had, and the salad dressing I chose (French) had a real nasty vinegary taste to it. So much for the salad bar, let's change tables and try the pizza. The selection is not the Best; 2 pizzas to choose from. the pizzas were warm, not hot, sauce quite bland, thin crust, very salty (not unusual for Pizza...) and very little toppings. Eatable, but would I rave about them? Nope, not this pizza. Next time I'm in Hayward, I think I'll skip this place. read more

Okay I should say straight away that I've only had the chicken dinners from this place, not the pizza, so I can't speak to that, but the chicken dinner is So. Damn. Good. The chicken has been cooked perfectly, juicy and delicious, every time I go. It's served with coleslaw, cranberries, and potato wedges, all of which are good, but let me take a moment to rave about the wedges. The first time I got food here I ordered carry out, and when I got home I realized I didn't have any sour cream, which is my preferred topping for wedges. I really didn't want to go back out, but I was getting ready to, and just grabbed a wedge to munch on. It was absolutely delicious. I don't know what they flavor them with, if anything, but they've been cooked perfectly every time I've had them, soft and not dry, just seriously. So good. Honestly the only reason I give them four stars rather than five is because of the service. My mom came to town for a visit and I took her here, and the service was fairly lackluster. I don't think our waitress smiled at us even once, she just didn't seem to enjoy her job at all. I understand people have bad days, but having worked in the service industry myself, those are the days you put on a fake smile and still try to make your customers feel welcome. I probably won't eat in-house again, honestly, because I don't like being made to feel awkward when I'm trying to enjoy a meal, but will absolutely order carry out again. read more

Low quality, pre-packaged/processed Sysco food service ingredients. Service and ambiance are fine and classic Northwoods, but I've experienced mediocre to lame food (pizza and salad bar) the 4 to 5 times my dad has dragged me here over the years. Iceberg lettuce and Sysco croutons in the salad bar, canned mushrooms on the "veggie" pizza and enough potassium sorbate in the banana peppers and mountains of canned black and green olives to pickle your stomach. The "homemade" Italian sausage did not taste homemade, and the flavorless "wheat" crust is basically white with a few flecks of brown. How about modernizing your food and jumping ahead 10-15 years into the new millennium, Coops? Offer actual fresh local organic ingredients. Can't get local ingredients in the winter in the Northwoods? At least offer fresh organic produce brought in from somewhere else. How about romain lettuce and spring greens in the salad bar, with actual homemade dressings and croutons with EVO and fresh bread? How about organic spinach, fresh mushrooms, red onions and kalamata olives on your pizza, with a wheat crust that actually contains some wheat flour and some flavor? Most other mid-range pizza places in the rest of the US have already been doing this for years. Check out the menus of Glass Nickel in Madison or Fratellis in Flagstaff as examples. These are not high-end wood fired pizza places, but regular ol' local pizza parlors who offer mainly high quality, fresh ingredients, with fresh sausage and nitrite-free pepperoni. Just say no to Sysco and join the rest of us in 2014, Coops. read more
