After a great deal of searching, I finally found a whisky that suits me. Apparently I'm a single-malt type of guy, but lucky for me, that's exactly what Copper Fox specializes in. Copper Fox might be hard to find, since it you won't have any phone signal. It's in a tiny back-area in Sperryville, right across from Pen Druid brewery and a few other shops. Tastings were I think $6. You can get a free 20 minute tour of the facilities, where they go over how they do their magic. I tried 6 tastings; their single malt, the 'Blue Top' single malt (but made in a port style), the Copper Fox rye, a Blue Top Rye port style, and the "1797" bourbon style (technically can't be called a bourbon since it wasn't fermented in new barrels). I even got a splash of their gin. Of these, I liked the single malt whisky the best, and bought a bottle. I thought the 1797 was also excellent; it's name comes from how they use a very old whisky recipe, and it still works! The port styles were a little too sweet for me, and while I didn't dislike their gin, it's nose was too flowery. Last time around I really liked their rye, but maybe my taste buds have changed a bit. I finally squeezed in a late afternoon trip to Copper Fox Sunday of Halloween weekend. I stopped to try and pet the House Distillery Dog - a really cute Black Labrador, but I was told the tour was starting so I had to abandon that fun. He/She is an adorable Lab! The tour was really interesting and informative. It probably took 20 minutes or so. Out tour guide person was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions our group put forth. Afterward, we got to choose up to three products to taste, I went with the Rye Whiskey with the blue wax label and the regular Rye Whiskey (I already have bottles of the Rye Whiskey and the Single Malt Whiskey at home). Both products I tried were very flavorful - nice depth and character. Almost of a hint of peatiness, even though they don't use peat. Nice smokiness! Everyone working here was really nice! We came here for a tasting and tour. This is my husband's review because I don't like whiskey so even taking tiny sips of his tasting were unpleasant. However, I am interested in all things edible or drinkable so enjoyed learning how they make whiskey on their tour! At $10 for a tasting, and then cocktails available for purchase, them the chance to drink them by a cozy wood stove, it was a fun ambience. Again, better if I liked the product. Visited as big whiskey drinkers. The setting is amazing. Copper Fox is located amongst a little collection of fun businesses that include a brewery and antique stores. You ring a bell for access and enter through giant barn doors into a wonderfully atmospheric warehouse that is dimly.lit and decorated with vintage furniture, whiskey paraphernalia, and miniature train sets! We opted to take a tour of the distillery. Our guide was one of the distillers, which meant he was incredibly knowledgeable about the whole process. We learned that Copper Fox is one of the few distilleries in the US that malts and smokes/dries its own grain, as well as shipping out to other distilleries and breweries (including some of our local favorites in Baltimore!). We also got a very informative and entertaining tour, that I would thoroughly recommend. After the tour, we headed to the tasting bar to try the current liquors on sale. Tastings at distilleries in Virginia are limited to 3oz per person. We did two tastings at $8 for four 1/4oz pours, which allowed the two of us to split our servings to try each of the eight options on offer. We felt the full bottle price for some was a little overpriced, but the regular offerings were delicious and good value. The main area also had a cocktail bar that served some interesting drinks. Note that these still count towards your 3oz total! An Old Fashioned was nice, but I'd have preferred orange peel over an orange slice. My partner had a smoked single malt, which involved a blowtorch and some applewood, and produced a delicious way of drinking an already great whiskey. Despite it being a chilly March day, we slipped out back to finish our drinks. The distillery has a lovely back porch and garden overlooking a small stream, which made for a great spot for relaxing with our drinks. We can't wait to come back in warmer weather! read more

Headed back towards DC after hiking Old Rag? Stop by Copper Fox! I have done an extensive amount of the Bourbon Trail, and I can confidently say that the customer service at Copper Fox is the best I have experienced at a distillery. The interior of their Sperryville location is very homey and comfortable. If you like whiskey, it just smells so dang good. They offer free tours throughout the day as people arrive. They are very relaxed and go through their entire process from obtaining the grain all the way to bottling and waxing. They also offer tastings of four of their products of your choosing for $8. If you are in a group of two, they let you taste all 8 of their products with each of you getting a half serving. Their whiskies are all really, really tasty with their rye whiskey being my favorite. They have a few products with special additions of apple and pear. While I am not normally a fan of gin, their one gin product was well received by our group. After your tasting, they have a bar with a whole slew of delicious cocktails. What I really loved about this place was how kind and knowledgable all of the staff was. Decent local distillery. The owner was very nice and friendly. The whisky ("bourbon" that doesn't meet the requirements for bourbon) was decent but way over priced in my opinion. Feel free to check them out and make your own Yelp review but overall it was just an average experience for me. Having said that, I've been to the whisky trail in KY and Jack Daniels in TN so that's what i'm comparing it to in my mind. This is not that type of place. This is a very small operation apparently. We visited on Mother's Day 2023. Door was open so we walked in and was chastised immediately after asking a male host (young guy brown hair with a mustache wide hat) if it was okay that we walked in since the door was opened. Pretty rude attitude towards us from then on. The place was empty and we sat by the water for cocktails, which were delicious. Overshadowed by the host chastising us again for rejecting a high top table we couldn't sit at since we had a baby and made no attempt to be accommodating, actually the opposite when we grabbed a chair from a empty table to sit at a table by the water. He proceeded to act like we had broken some unspoken rule and told us we had to put the chair back since the tables were all designated seating. I understand that if it had been a busy day but to make zero effort to offer any alternative or accommodation and speak in a rude tone when we were being understanding and pleasant about it ruined the experience for us. Maybe he was having an off day, we are all entitled to a few of those. Maybe we will come back once this experience has faded. read more

Unassuming barn warehouse turned distillery. Gravel parking lot shared with the antique shop. Tasting prices overestimate the splashes you get without rinsing out regularly between pours. Happy to support young liquors paving the way with single malt cred. Tour covers the whole process, and if you're lucky the resident cat will show its face. I like that they sell systems to barrel-age Belle Meade yourself, though I wish they'd volunteered information on reusing the barrels. Where do I begin. Driving through the twisty roads of Virginia and I'm wondering what Jenn and I were getting into. Fear not, this was the top stop of our 3 day mostly wine tour. Peter Morgner was our guide and taste testing expert. The whiskey variety was so enjoyably. I also had their gin which was better than any I've ever had. Peter had never had cheese curds, and on this National Cheese Curd Day, I happened to have Dill Curds from the Alp and Dell in Monroe WI. While staying in Shenandoah, we looked around for things to do that weren't nature hikes and noticed a brochure for a driving tour of all the local wineries... and one distillery. That perked up our ears and we had to check it out. Copper Fox is located in what looks like the rustic back alley of the small town of Sperryville. It was a little tricky to home in on with sporadic cell and GPS service, but we were able to track it down just fine. As soon as we walked into what looked for all the world to be a barn/feed store, we were greeted by the workers who asked if we'd like a tour. The tour was great, starting at one side of the facility where they start the process, and walking all the way to the other end where they finish. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and while it was clear he had his facts memorized he was also very proud to be showing off their products as he answered our questions. He doubled as our bartender when we paid for four samples each at the end of the tour. I felt bad about not having cash to tip him when we were done, but I was able to add a tip for him when I paid for our bottles at the gift shop on our way out. They have a gorgeous deck and lawn where you can sit and enjoy the rushing river out back, so plan some extra time into your day to relax with your purchases. read more

Really cool place to stumble onto! After a fun hike in the Shenandoahs and driving back home, there were signs for this distillery. Obviously I had to check it out because it seemed like such a unique and interesting place. I was totally right! Arriving just as the tour was starting, we were escorted into room after room of where the magic happens. I love how our whole group was able to observe the bottling and final waxing procedure. Finally, we were able to taste three spirits for $7, which led us to buy a nice whiskey for a reasonable price in the super cute gift shop. Copper Fox is the real deal, a hand-crafted, small-batch, family-run distillery in the beautiful foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Their products are not the marketing creation of a giant conglomerate like so many others, mass produced by an industry giant in Kentucky and sold as if they were a local, craft brand. Visit the distillery, and see for yourself. I returned to Copper Fox again, and since my first review Copper Fox has retained all the good while growing in a positive direction. Large orders have been filled for distributors in the UK, a competitive whisky market, indicating nice sales growth. Beyond Wasmund's Single Malt (like a Scotch), that put them on the whisky map, the Rye Whisky and Raw Spirit (un-aged, original ~124 proof), they've added VIRgin Virginia Gin, and premium "Blue Top" Single Malt & Rye Whisky, and Belle Grove 1797 (made with corn, like a Bourbon). Plus, Virginia has relaxed their out-dated and prohibitive alcohol laws and now you can sample and buy Copper Fox products right at the distillery. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. The tour is free, but you will be tempted at the end of the tour by products they sell. Tip - For a unique whisky experience, buy a mini-barrel and some of their Raw Spirit and age the whisky yourself. Both my boyfriend and I are huge fans of whiskey, so being in the area, we figured it was a good place to start! The entrance itself was pretty neat, and the second you walk in the atmosphere is great. A warehouse type, with a prohibition era feeling. We started with the tour, and the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, in a calm way that was very pleasant. We shared a tasting, and this is what we thought: the single malt was our favorite, we weren't huge fans of the rye, and the bourbon mash was actually pretty enjoyable, even being 124 proof! Took a day to do a number of distillery tours one weekend and ended the trip here. The good: 1. Tasting room and outdoor cocktail garden lended itself to a great atmosphere for relaxing and having a dram 2. Whiskey itself is one of my personal favorite whiskeys to be found in Virginia. Their cocktail choices are good but you should definitely try at least one neat just to get a good idea of how good it is. Tastes a little more like a scotch than a bourbon, which makes sense given their background and techniques. 3. Friendly staff who were super accommodating and happy to show me around 4. Dog friendly, especially good since I showed up with the dog and didn't bother to check before I arrived. Nice to chill in the cocktail garden with my dog. (Dogs, obviously, cannot go on the distillery tour though) The Bad: 1. Not much here. Sperryville is a little off the beaten path but also a really cool little town so just be prepared for the drive and I had no cell signal so again be prepared for that. Really enjoyed our visit and tour this past weekend. We've stopped by Pen Druid before, but hadn't made it to Copper Fox. Got there just in time for a tour, which is always fascinating. They use a more Scottish method, which was interesting, and different for the U.S. They also have an interesting way of speeding up the aging process. In addition to whiskey they also make their own gin, which was really interesting. It was a different flavor than many other gins, much spicier (to me at least, I could easily taste the star anise). It was also impressive how everything, from start to finish, is done on-site. Small distilleries often use alcohol purchased elsewhere, so it's impressive that they do it all themselves. You could tell that everyone there is passionate about their work. The tasting was also pretty decent, at $8 for a flight (which we could have easily shared among the two of us). They offer mixed cocktails for purchase as well, but we were on our way to lunch and a hike, so we didn't get to try these. We finished our tasting out back by the stream, which was lovely, and then left with bottles of the rye and gin (took a while to decide between the rye and single malt). Something else interesting they have are little DIY kits with a mini barrel and some alcohol to age. We're getting married nearby in the fall, and my fiance suggested getting a kit and seeing how it turns out on a later anniversary. read more

The staff were very informative and friendly. The tour was free but it's tough to not feel the urge to purchase a bottle of something and a tshirt from the place after the whole event. It's amazing a brand can be produced from start to finish in basically an old barn and supply ABC stores... the history is cool, and the surrounding shops are great. I'm going again with friends who share an interest in bourbon and I will taste a few more this time. We've visited this distillery pre-covid and the tour was wonderful then. However, this trip, our tour guide was unprofessional where he used the f-bomb several times during his presentation as well as rudely answered a question when a person in our party asked to see the corn grain. Additionally, this tour guide led us to believe he was in charge of determining when the product was ready to be bottled. Based on our experience of completing 16+ years of distillery tours in Kentucky, the Master Distillery is the person responsible for determining when a product is ready for bottling, unless a barrel was pre-purchased by a consumer. . It appeared the two male staff we came into contact with would benefit from training in customer service. Besides the unprofessionalism of our tour guide, when we were greeted after ringing the door bell, the greeter appeared to be less than enthusiastic to tend to our requests, especially because was wanted a tour and had to wait approximately 40 minutes for the 1:00 p.m. tour. As we waited for the tour, we had both tasting and enjoyed the flavors so much that a total of four bottles of their products, plus the soap, were purchased. Another complaint is Copper Fox charges for the tour and the tasting. Based on our experience, if you pay for a tour, the tasting if free or at an upcharge if you requested a premium tasting. We paid for both the tour and tasting unlike when we visited Filibusters Distillery in Maurertown, VA, where the tour was free and there was a charge for the tasting. Copper Fox was the first craft distillery we visited in VA and KY that charged for a tour and tasting. Normally, the tasting is included in the tour. This distillery would benefit from exposure of attending a craft distillery tour in KY (i.e., James E. Pepper Distillery, Bluegrass Distillery, both in Lexington, KY) or Tall Pines in Salisbury, PA. read more

Has anyone every had Copper Fox VirGin? I picked up a bottle the other day (because it was 45% off) and I couldn't even finish the small glass that I poured. I'm quite the Gin lover, with my shelf consisting of (Bombay, Tanqueray, Death's door, Green Hat, Beefeater, Uncle Val's, The Botanist, and Hendrick's) all gins I would recommend. The Copper Fox VirGin was so hard to drink, It smelled and tasted like Thyme. Based on the taste, Juniper wasn't even an ingredient used in this gin. Check the website for times, but typically 4 pm on weekdays, and 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, and 5 pm on Saturdays. And the tours are *really* well-done. - The tour guides. We had a gentleman (one of only two) who works right alongside owner and malt-master, Rick Wasmund, to soak, malt, kiln-dry and smoke, mash, barrel-age, and bottle Copper Fox's whisky. He was a total character with deadpan delivery and an impressively commanding knowledge of the distillery's workings. - An excellent product. Wasmund spent years studying the art of whisky making in Scotland, and the fruits of his studies are readily apparent in the unique, singularly flavored Wasmund's Single-Malt Whisky. Where Scottish whiskys have that wonderful peaty flavor, Wasmund's has a truly distinct finish imparted by the apple, cherry, and oak wood used in both the smoking and barrel-aging process. Also available is Copper Fox's Rye Whisky, Single-Malt Spirit, and Rye Spirit -- the spirits can be purchased along with petite oak barrels for aging your own at home. Husband and I picked up a bottle of the rich, delicious single-malt in the distillery's gift shop, but Copper Fox products are also available at outlets all over the country (check website for locations). - Free samples of Copper Fox's own Chocolate Whisky Balls. While state law prohibits the distillery from offering samples of their spirits, The Man can't keep Copper Fox from handing out these liquor-soaked nuggets of goodness. Take that! Completely impromptu trip. My work week started out heading south through Charlottesville, to Lynchburg and ending in Roanoke for a quarterly work trip to see a few accounts. On the second day of my trip, I found out that my division was realigning, and I'd be losing this part of my territory. So after a few quick stops to bid my customers a final farewell, I had a little bit of time to kill on the drive back to DC and decided to make a few stops along the way. Places I've wanted to check out every time I've been down here, but never had enough time to do so. After a slow cruise up the Blue Ridge Parkway, I hiked around the Natural Bridge area and was content to have checked those boxes. A friend who was following my adventures suggested stopping at one of the local whiskey distilleries to bring my husband home a nice surprise. (Which is when I thought... what about me? I like whiskey too!!) Copper Fox had great reviews and was a nice drive through Luray and the Shenandoah Forest... so I thought, why not? I can't say I have any regrets about my slight deviation. The drive was pretty and fun through the windy switchback forest roads on such a beautiful spring day. I was expecting a huge building with rolling hills nearby - clearly I've been to far too many vineyards - but instead I found a small gravel road that took me past a few buildings advertising antiques to a large barn tucked away from the road. The massive wood doors to enter the building were gorgeous. Hand made by one of the sons. There were a few more beautiful, large wood doors inside the building separating the various rooms that were just stunning. I was given a personal tour of the facility, and I took photos as I learned about the process. Quite amazing to think that all of that is created, produced and shipped from this little place in the middle of rural Virginia. I loved their story. And I can't wait to bring my husband back here to see. Highly, highly recommended!! Pros: They are knowledgeable and friendly. I have been on the tour two times, and it was great both times. I enjoyed seeing the whole process of making whiskey. The tour is pretty informal, so you can ask questions along the way. The building that houses the distillery is old and charming. My husband says the whiskey is pretty good (I don't know a lot about whiskey, but I tried it and liked it). Cons: It's not their fault (blame the government), but you can't taste the whiskey there. You can see it made, you can smell it, you can buy it, but you can't taste it. Damn. Summary: I've been twice and I'll probably go again. My friends and I enjoyed a nice drive down to Copper Fox Distillery on our Sunday Funday to celebrate a birthday. Now, Copper Fox isn't usually open on Sundays, but the owner, Rick was nice enough to open and do a tour for us. (We called in advance, don't expect to roll up there on a Sunday and convince him to do it). Sperryville is lovely and the distillery is a rustic old building that used to be an apple juice factory. It was a cold day, but it was warm and cozy inside and smelled sweet from all of the barley malting, smoking, and distilling going on. I could've just chilled there all day by the fire with the dog and cat, next to the Christmas tree watching tv. I didn't know anything about whiskey and I don't even like it, but it was fun to learn about how the process works and to visit a place that does it locally. All of the ingredients come from Virginia and so it is nice to support local businesses. I am a bit envious of the owner because he has a job that is fun and he loves it. He even spent time in Scotland as an apprentice to distillers to learn how they do things over there. We got to see where they age the barely and pick it up to see it sprouting. Next was the smoking room, where it was quite warm, but after walking in from outside it is quite lovely. They use different woods like applewood than is traditional and it gives everything a great flavor. It also makes it smell great in the distillery! We then moved on to the fermenting room and got to climb up and check out all of the stuff that was fermenting. He told us to take a whiff of it and that it might just go straight to our heads...he was kidding but man, that stuff does pack a punch. Lastly, came the barrel room and Rick explained their process and how they picked certain woods and barrels. We also got to see their sweet wax a matic machine, where the make the bottles looks nice with a wax seal. We then got to take whiffs of the finished product before the tour was over. It was a really great tour and I highly recommend going out there. They also have a little cafe so on days that they are normallly open you can enjoy lunch or dinner after your tour. The gift shop was nice too and they had a couple of whiskeys that are not available in stores for purchase. They also had glasses, ornaments, gift sets, and a flask in a leather pouch. The most fun item was the little oak barrels where you can age the whiskey yourself. This was such a great day and the owner was funny and he was also nice to open up for us. I definitely want to stay at one of the local Inns next time so that I can enjoy the surrounding area more. There are tons of wineries around so you can hit up some of them after the distillery tour. I also want to add that I have tried this whiskey and it is the only whiskey that I have ever had that I have liked. :) read more

Rick Wasmund, the owner, is knowledgeable and trying some different techniques which are producing a unique and tasty spirit. Great place to get some local brewed small batch whiskey. Located in a nice small town of Sperryvillle, the distillery is located in an old barn/farm in a neat stone building. The free tour shows their process and it looks more like an illegal moonshine operation than a modern distillery. That is the charm of the place. They are building a seperate tasting room which will eventually allow visitors to sample the products. Great products which make great home drinking and gifts for the right occaisions. I like their home distilling kits to flavor and make your own brew. The town of Sperryville is fun with small shops, restaraunts, stores and antique shops for a nice day trip. As a huge Single Malt fan, I was very excited when my friends suggested a trip to Copper Fox Distillery, the only Single Malt distillery in the US, followed by a fun picnic in the area. Copper Fox Distillery, is located in Sperryville, VA which is a quaint little, picturesque town that also offers cute cafes, and a small downtown. We were a group of 20 people, and were fortunate enough to get the tour from Rick Wasmund himself, who is the owner, malt-master, and 'father' of the whole place. We also learned that Rick Wasmund did his internship in Islay region in Scotland: which is my favorite Single-Malt region! With great humor, and fantastic explanations he gave us such a fun and informative tour of the place. Unlike other distillery tours that one might have done in Europe or elsewhere in the US where the tour takes place in a sort of "museum" part of the distillery: here, you can actually see the entire process from start to finish. You see the actual barley room, see the real smoking room, go inside of it, and even climb the stairs to touch and smell the barley that is currently being smoked. Followed by the actual place where the barley is being processed, you can stick your finger in the barrel and taste it (sweet like oatmeal!) and climb up the stairs on top of where it is being fermented and smell it (spicy and burns your nose!) and see the real process of making it to be the delicious single malt or whiskey. This place is so great, you can even see where a nice lady is putting the labels on the bottles by hand, and where another nice gentleman is waxing the bottle necks: all happens in real time, right in front of you. We observed them making a shipment to the UK, right in front of our eyes: bottles were filled, labeled, and individually waxed. How real and fun is that? The tour was fun, we all purchased fantastic goods from their store, and played with the sweet pets of the place. This will be your perfect Saturday get-away, less than 2 hours from the heart of DC. If you have a guest in town or if you want to plan the perfect Saturday get-away- I highly recommend you'll try this fantastic little town, and amazing distillery!
