I started going to Corina Bakery when they first opened as I'm never one pass up a good bakery, especially since there aren't any in Tacoma. While Metropolitan Market's bakery section may look delectable in my limited cupcake experience it's all show and no substance. I was delighted to find that Corina served cupcakes - yellow and chocolate, nothing fancy. I was less than thrilled with them, however, as their frosting doesn't taste all that special or different than the recipe on the back of the powdered sugar bag. By no means are they bad, but simply not up to my cupcake standards. What I am happy to rave about, however, is their red velvet cake. Three layers of deep red velvet cake sandwiched between generous layers of cream cheese frosting. I usually eat it layer by layer as a forkful of a cake slice does not fit on your typical fork. The cake is moist and rich and the cream cheese the right balance of sweet and tangy, a great complement to the moist cake. As a single slice of cake easily equates to two if not three servings at under $4 you're really getting your money's worth. Besides cupcakes and red velvet, Corina also offers a selection of more cake (hummingbird, yellow, and chocolate, to name a few), as well as brownies, pudding, muffins and breads. The breads come in tiny, mini-loaf shapes and are perfectly sized for breakfast or a picnic. A friend e-mailed me today and informed me that Corina Bakery is newly re-opened with fancy digs - espresso, wifi, and much more space for seating. I'm only sad that I live across the country now, as I'd be there regularly. Make Corina a stop on your way home from LeLe's (another Tacoma favorite of mien), or as a bookend to a great flick at the Grand Cinema, either way make sure you stop! read more

My favorite bakery in town! Love all the gluten free variety as well as the sweets for my kids. Always a stop for any of my family coming in from town. Centrally located with ease of access. The turkey gluten free breakfast sandwich always hits the spot and their giant pretzel. I walked in here, curious since I just moved to the area and am really within walking distance of lots of awesome places. I was greeted warmly, the music made me smile, and there were a couple of cases full of fresh goodies. I tried the spinach and cream cheese croissant. It was so yummy. I had no idea what I wanted for breakfast this morning and that was hands down *it.* The person I was with got an orange and chocolate chip muffin, it was also delicious. The orange wasn't overpowering, just enough zest to make it zing, and it was nice and dense but not heavy. Considering I haven't been here in the past in what seems to have been its glory days, as some Yelpers have been commenting, I can only base my review on the awesome service and yummy pastries I got this morning. Ummmm, how do I put this? Oh my silly, crazy, stupid YUM! This place is fantastic! It is absolutley everything a bakery should be. The right amount of modern furnishings which make you feel like you're "somewhere" (so to speak), combined with the perfect comfortable accents that give you the feeling that you're exactly where you want to be. The diplays are exciting and appealing to the eye. I truly could've tried one of everything (and almost did)! My latte was hands down, without a doubt the best I've had in Tacoma. Such a delicious cake! I called to place an order for a birthday cake about two days before I actually needed it, and they assured me that it would be done and ready for me to pick up when I needed it. When I got there, the cake was perfect, and the writing I requested was absolutely beautiful! Plus, they have a fun selection of candles you can choose to decorate the cake with. Definitely worth the price I paid! I will say, I do wish their counter service was a bit faster; there weren't many people there, yet it felt like it was taking longer than needed just to serve three people. This place has been a favorite of mine for years. Just realized I've never written a review for them. They have friendly and attentive staff. Many vegan and gluten free options each day. Their cheesecake is TOO DIE FOR!!! If you love light, rich, fluffy cheese cake that will leave you swooning for hours, stop by. I had them make my wedding cake and they were easy to work with, professional, and made an excellent cake. Overall-- I love this place and cannot say enough good things. Go here. I will say this: their gluten free and vegan options vary day to day. So you might not be able to get your favorite treat every time you come. If you come towards the end of the day they are sometimes out of some of the options (for example I've been there when there wasn't any gluten free cake because it was purchased earlier in the day). read more

So, I'd thought up the basic outline of what I was going to write... until I saw that our pal, Donkey L., had pretty much already said exactly what I wanted to write, beginning with "I love the ambiance of this place. This last weekend was my best friend's bridal shower. Being that she is vegan, it was very difficult trying to find a bakery that would be able to create a beautiful AND great tasting cake. I knew I wanted her to be able to eat cake so I was on a mission. Seeing recent reviews on yelp made me really nervous after I made my order. (I ordered roughly a month in advance) The ordering process was so easy and the staff was friendly. I sent them an email with a inspiration photo which was really helpful. We ordered a tall 9 inch vegan vanilla cake with raspberry filling. As I went to pick up the cake I was really nervous to look at it. I was soooo happy the way it turned out. Needless to say, the cake was such a hit! Even all our non-vegan friends were asking where we had got the cake from. The cake was so moist and not overly sweet which we tend to come across with vegan cakes. I will definitely being ordering my cakes from here! read more

Local business supporting local business is what makes some of Tacoma's hot spots so great. Service is friendly but lack-a-daisy. If you are going to take your sweet time serving me a pastry or coffee it better be damn good and they are! The bakery is located in one of my favorite spots in all of Tacoma. It had to be done. Still think they're absolutely delicious and awesome customer service, but I'm not going to trust them with a cake in any shape but round. I ordered a specialty cake in the shape of a camcorder for my boyfriend's birthday. His specific camcorder that he's used since high school (it was his 30th birthday) Due to everyone and their mom getting married on his birthday I agreed to pick up the cake early. Not an issue. I was told this handheld camcorder would be able to do. It would be slightly bigger than the original, and some parts would be made of fondant. But it would definitely look like his camera. I GLADLY HANDED OVER THE MONEY WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT I come to pick up the cake, and they bring out enough cake to make up a half sheet cake, that vaguely resembled A camcorder, but not HIS camcorder. It was a box with gray frosting. And the fondant pieces I payed extra for, amounted maybe a handful. Here's the kicker, I gave them the physical camcorder to use. FOR 3 DAYS. All the writing was very neat, and the script was beautiful. In the end it was absolutely delicious. I still HIGHLY recommend Corina. Just not for special shaped cakes. read more

It is with a heavy heart that I write this mostly negative review. I take no joy in it, nor do I wish the owners or the business any ill will. The positives- Excellent customer service and well designed online ordering system. The negatives- We ordered a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting for my birthday. I know, it's rather plain but I really like simple yet rich and buttery vanilla. Unfortunately this cake was just not what I expected. To begin with the frosting was cloyingly sweet. My preference for buttercream is more complex with a hint of salt for balance. The cake itself was moist, but extremely dense and again unbalanced and very sweet. There was almost no vanilla flavor to speak of. I'm sure that for most folks this style of cake is exactly what they're looking for, but it wasn't for me. read more

We have a family recipe for red velvet cake, and bakeries never seem to get the recipe right per my liking. However, Corina hit the nail on the head with their version. While not the same as my family recipe, Corina's take on this delectable cake definitely deserves 5, if not more, stars. It was awesome! Also, the bite of my friend's hummingbird cake was excellent and I'm looking forward to the slice of chocolate cake I brought home for my husband. Cakes are beautiful, but bland...I had a lavender honey slice, and it tasted like your basic white "birthday cake" with white frosting...the only thing lavender about it were a few pieces of dried flowers on top. Some people like these kinds of cakes, and to you I say "go there!", but if you like rich butter creams and a European flair to your baked treats, I say "avoid"... I will give a kudos to their Quinoa Cookie, as a nice "healthy" treat...it's unique and offers whole grains, unlike any thing else on their menu, that I'm aware of anyways. Once I had a little ball called "mother's little helper", cleverly named I thought, and it said it had rum and one other booze flavor to it...it tasted like nothing more than a chocolate cupcakey type thingy. Nothing special, so I was disappointed. Another time, I had a Dream Bar type of cookie with the coconut, chocolate chips, graham crackers, etc...and it was dry and boring...kind of old tasting. I have made them so much better at home, so you think they could?? I can only deduce don't use very great quality ingredients... I have managed to get a decent cup of brewed coffee from them a few times, though it's rather inconsistently good. It's right next to the Grand Theater, who gives coupons to Corina when you attend a movie, so that's always fun. If I ever wanted a froo-froo type of cake for a bunch of kids who love sugary yet flavorless cakes, I wouldn't hesitate to get one from them. I do like that Corina exists as part of the fabric of Tacoma, since we have so many vacant cool buildings around....Maybe I need to try more things??? read more

I am a fan! I just recently ordered their baked goods for my engagement party last Saturday and was amazed at their quality and service. The shortbread cookies are perfect- not too sweet or dry. I also picked up a dozen of their mini gluten-free pumpkin cupcakes and dark chocolate cupcakes. I loved them and so did all of my guests. In addition to the cupcakes and shortbread cookies, I also ordered their lemon bars. Wow. the whole plate disappeared quick! Soft and gooey- the lemon bars were perfect treats as well. You got a super happy customer here. I recently came in to get some treats for a dinner party I was going to. I had plans to go to Seattle but a three hour back-up on I-5 brought me to Tacoma, where I was to have dinner anyway. The inside space is way bigger than I'd imagined. There were lots of people taking advantage of the free wi-fi. There was a great variety of sweet and savory items available. Ultimately I purchased a baguette, a variety of chocolate balls (I dare you not to think of South Park), and a vegan/gluten-free Orange-vanilla cake. From my own experience I can say the cake was ammmmaaaaaaazing. Sure was. I didn't even wanna share. I was told the bread and the balls were delicious as well. I wish I could've eaten them but have learned to listen to my body who says dairy and gluten and not friends. This is definitely a place I would come back to... There were gluten free biscuit sandwiches, gluten free quiche, muffins and cookies. Although service was slow the baked goods were well worth the wait. read more

It was overly sweet and tasted very eggy. Zero stars for their service. Counter lady taking orders was very snotty, had a resting bitch face and was very rude rushing people to make their orders for both pastries and drinks. It is very difficult to find parking as the bakery is located in the corner on a busy four way stop. The interior of the place was cute but dirty. What a cute little cafe/sweet shop right next door to a movie theater. I finally got the chance to stop in and try and my oh my so many sweet options! I opted for the lemon cake pop but it was twice as large than a normal cake pop. They're iced americano was strong and delicious. I sat outside with my dog and enjoyed the afternoon. I have been here a couple of times, and here's what I think... 1) Their vegan carrot cake is Amazing. Try it if it's available. Seriously. 2) I had to special order 12 cupcakes for my Aunt's birthday, who is a vegan, and then drive them to Port Townsend. The cupcakes arrived unscathed. However, they were not as tasty as the carrot cake, perhaps because they had been out all day. But my Aunt loved them, and was happy, so I can't really complain. 3) I'm not sure who the barista was the last time I was in, but she was fantastic. However, the gal that ran up my tab seemed irritated that I couldn't order fast enough (sorry, I'm 8 months pregnant, give me a second, lady). Very good coffee but the cake? Not so much. We had placed a special order for a birthday cake for our grandson's first birthday and while it was beautiful, it was not really edible. The cake was very dry and heavy. The flavor itself was just off with the buttercream frosting really being the only good tasting element. Probably my worst cake experience to date. I came in looking for some New Year's Eve gluten-free desserts and got super excited when I saw a whole cabinet full...then realized only a few were GF- two cookie options, a muffin or two, an energy ball, three different cake slices (devil's food, red velvet, vanilla strawberry), a turkey breakfast biscuit and a fritatta. I bought a regular gluten-filled lemon bar for my Boy and a GF Red Velvet cake for me. The Boy felt the lemon bar was meh. As a southerner, the two Red Velvet cake requirements are cream cheese icing and cocoa flavor, none of which seemed to be present at all in my GF slice. The actual cake crumb was dry, dare I say, old. For $5 a slice, I was hoping for something better. After reading the reviews, I expected fireworks, instead it was mere tea lights. The customers are probably the worst thing about this place. There are so many wonderful treats to look at that you get stuck in line behind someone trying to decide what cake they want to special order. It would be nice if the regulars did not have to wait for the indecisive, but them's the breaks. The cheesecakes are better than everything else except, maybe, the fair scones with the most excellent, creamy raspberry jam. Also, I just like the fair. If the cheesecake was deep fried, this review would get the extra star. Is that fair (or punny)...? No. They use Big Train Chai unless you ask for Oregon Chai. It is powdered and not exactly good for you, but it's a sweet treat. My very last sip ALWAYS tastes like melted brown sugar MMMMmmmm. I have only once gotten a burnt latte. There coffee is generally good (see: rich and not too sweet). Of course, it's Valhalla. I enjoyed the old space, but I'm accepting of the reality that they just need more of it to display all of their wares. At the former art gallery and restaurant, there is now enough space for everyone to sit. Yay! You can buy the 16oz for same price..no refill. No coffee punch cards or regular consumer support discount. No 'bring your own mug for .10 off' for helping evironment or saving them money on paper cups and plastic lids. So why is it so special? Oh the free wifi? hmmm thats the 2nd upside I guess. Banana pudding....is it really special? Cookies look okay. Tasted a sample..light and buttery. Plain Croissant might be the best deal. Coffee is just okay flavor wise which surprises me because they use Valhalla and I used to be an avid supporter of their roasts. NW has some fierce competition out there so its just average in my opinion. They bake their own pastries however they don't stick to using NW regional goods. They try. I asked. That makes a difference in what I'm willing to pay as a patron. I was here once before to meet someone for coffee. I didnt pay which was a nice rare treat, but I wasn't paying attention to the cost much. I was in a frazzled state of mind, so I wanted to give a proper visit on this day. Parking is challenging streetside. You may have to park 1 block up and walk like I did. Just not worthy of another visit unless I'm in the area already. It is clean enough...draws a decent crowd. Got the sweet potato pie, thought it was pre-cooked, if it was not I received no cooking instructions. Soggy crust, dry filling, a bit spicy but I think it was suppose to be spicy.
