I had been to The Cornerstone several times in past years, but hadn't been back in quite some time until a couple months ago. My wife and I were looking for a morning place with no waiting, and when I called, they said there was no wait. When we arrived that was still the case - in fact, it was seat yourself. We picked a table in the back corner, far away from others so our toddler wouldn't disturb other people. The service was fast, and our waitress brought coffee out shortly after we sat down and ordered drinks. The time between our ordering and the food arriving was barely enough for our artist to discover the canvas that was our table. (Yes, they brought out a whole bucket of crayons and a place mat). Our order was accurate, and the food was all delicious. The waffles are really good. The prices are incredible, and the specials really were a good deal. They have specials different days and an early bird breakfast that is insanely cheap. In the end, we'll definitely be returning to The Cornerstone regularly. read more

My daughter took me here for a late breakfast. She had seen a review that raved about "toaster biscuits". We couldn't find them on the menu so we asked our waitress and found they are actually their English Muffins. We had a great laugh with her and ordered our breakfast. I ordered the Waffle special with a few special 'asks', that were no problem. Everything was delicious, even the "toaster biscuit" that we were sure to order. Very average. The veggie omelet had lots of spinach, a handful of tomatoes and very few paper thin slices of mushrooms. No flavor. It could have been so delicious with some sautéed onions and peppers for flavor I think the potatoes are reconstituted dried potatoes then fried crispy on the outside. Well two visits to this place since I've moved to Citrus Heights and I gotta say the small town vibe is strong with this non small town cafe. The staff is really fun, talkative and welcoming. The food is wonderful as well and there are a couple items you don't see regularly at other diners and cafes. If you're in the area I highly recommend stopping for a bite. The ingredients are so obviously low-quality that it's just embarrassing that 1.) A restaurant would seriously pass this garbage onto customers. 2.) People will pay for this crappy food! We are trying restaurants in the area rather going back to the same places all the time. Great reviews and proximity to the new green acres led us here. I expected a country style basic breakfast place. Nothing fancy but good food. I was so disappointed when i ordered corn beef hash and I recognized it was from a can. Glad I had my eggs and potatoes to fall back on. My husband ordered a country benedict. Clever Idea.. biscuits, sausage patty, Poached eggs covered with gravy. The Cornerstone is an old-school greasy spoon in the classic model. It's small, a wee bit dingy, and staffed by good-natured gals with a smile and easy manner. The menus are a frayed and a little sticky, the specials boards contain things that I have since forgotten (I have slept since Saturday), but I recall seeing slightly unusual items that sounded kind of good. However, being a fan of biscuits and gravy, I decided to order the Country Benedict. This, if you have not yet had it, is a divine concoction of a halved biscuit, two sausage patties, sausage gravy and poached eggs. Sound good? It is! The Cornerstone version is not the best by a bit (there are a couple of places in Bakersfield that take higher honors), but it was very good, and totally worth the calories. My girlfriend ordered an omelette made with ham, two kinds of cheese, onions and mushrooms. She was well-pleased with the selection (I tasted it just to make sure, and yeah, it was damn good). What was common to both plates was country potatoes. Now, these seem like slightly mashed-up potatoes, rather than cubed, but they get fried to an amazingly crispy and delicious consistency that is truly excellent. Breakfast here is worth it for the damned potatoes alone! Definitely adding this joint the the regular weekend rotation! read more

The Cornerstone is a greasy spoon where the bacon tastes good. It's a breakfast joint. The golden brown home fries are usually delicious. I go for the pancakes or french toast combo. Lots of old neighborhood geezers at this place lugging oxygen tanks around. They must have the home fries! They're gasping for air but the home fries are tasty deliciousness. Leaves 'em breathless. The waitress lady is sassy and a little kooky. She's a veteran. Good timing. The interior is a bit Oakland A's dugout, kelly green everywhere. But, I really go for the bacon and home fries. The food at this place is filling and heavy, but not satisfying. The portions are very generous, but I did not get the old-school diner comfort food experience that I was expecting. I ordered eggs benedict and my boyfriend ordered steak and eggs. The eggs benedict: Lets start with the foundation, the English muffin: it was barely toasted, had more of a wonder bread texture than the chewy "nooks and crannies" that one expects from an English muffin, so it is already starting off bad. The Canadian bacon was standard, and the poached egg was over cooked to the point of being like a hard boiled egg. The hollandaise sauce was clearly canned, and had a sickening sweet after taste. The only thing impressive were the hash browns, which were the right combination of crispy and moist. However, what good are hash browns without some flavorful eggs or gravy to mix 'em up with? Potatoes offer texture, but not flavor. Over all, I was uncomfortably full, but not satisfied. The steak and eggs: The steak was thin, overcooked and tough. My boyfriend asked for "medium" and got well done. I think the eggs were OK, and the white toast .. well, it was white toast. He too was uncomfortably full, but not satisfied and ready to get the check. The coffee: is acceptable and free, but I can only drink so much coffee. It was hilarious how they kept offering it to us even after drinking way more cups than I ever would normally. The whole feeling of the intense wired caffeine buzz added even more discomfort to being pulled in the other direction of being exhausted from overeating a bunch of greasy and bland food. The atmosphere did capture the spirit of the diner, but without great comfort food it is hard to appreciate the bustling noises of gossip from the next table, rattling silverware and clinking dishes. In this case, it actually becomes irritating. If ever I should find myself here again (unlikely unless I am with other friends who insist), I think I will go with something safe like a pancake shortstack. I have heard rumors that the corned beef has is good, but considering how obviously canned the hollandaise sauce was, I'd fear the corned beef being canned, and I would not like that. If you want Northern California comfort food, try Tommy's in San Francisco instead. I am still looking for a good comfort food place in Sacto. If you want good breakfast, I'd recommend Tower Cafe. read more

This was the first stop in a trip to California with the family, and I suggested this restaurant based only on Yelp reviews. I hate to write a bad review, but this restaurant was as ordinary as it gets. And I love little dive places ... but the food has to live up to the hype in order for it to win me over. To be fair, many of the stellar reviews were for breakfast fare and we went for lunch. My hamburger seemed like a prefrozen patty. My kids' meals unremarkable. My MIL's sandwich something I was glad I didn't order. And my hubs' selection equally as unattractive. The service was fine. The place was okay. But we'd been on a plane for many hours and excited to be out exploring -- and this meal - and the restaurant - was just a huge disappointment. Bottom line, I wish I would've seen the reviews left recently rather than the glowing ones that caused me to persuade my family to eat here - as I would've definitely held out for someplace else. read more

We were about to head over to County Waffles today, when I decided to consult Yelp on other options. I wanted to try something new. I narrowed it down to two and decided to to go with Cornerstone. BOY, was the Yelp reviews spot on!! Thank you Yelp! I decided to create my own omelet with mushrooms, spinach and onions in egg whites. I also ordered salsa on the side. I couldn't stop eating it! I pretty much polished it off pretty quickly. It was that good! Home fries isn't exactly what I expected. They looked more like fried mash potatoes, er, at least that's what it looked like. That was good too, but not good enough for me to not stop eating it. My df loved them though. My mom ordered a short stack (turns out she only ate one cuz the pancakes were pretty big), I ended up eating one of her pancakes and it was really yummy, light and fluffy - just the way I love them. Again, I had plans to only eat half of one, ended up eating 80% of it. DF ordered the pancake combo, he thought pancakes were good (though he prefers them a little chewy), he didn't care for the sausage, an the bacon he wished were a little more crispy. Service was good and friendly. Portions were generous. Coffee was always warmed up and refilled. The Cornerstone continues to be the same place to go for a satisfying breakfast or lunch. The staff are friendly, fast and efficent. The food is comfort food. My husband & I have eaten here hundreds of times over the years and have yet to have a bad meal. It is not a fancy place, you seat yourself at a clean table, open your menu and one of the waitresses will be over. Presentation is eye appealing and gets you off to a great start. This is the place YOU become family so much that when you go on vacation you send in a postcard for their wall, they ask about your health and job and then they fill your tummy with good home cooking at decent prices! This little local eatery is a hidden gem in our area. Our go to for some simple, delicious, and comforting food. The boyfriend hasn't strayed from the pancakes and can't even finish a short stack of 3. I haven't strayed from the biscuit special- 2 biscuit halves smothered in gravy with 2 eggs and 2 bacon and 2 sausage. And from my photo it looks like they incinerated my bacon but I asked for extra crispy and they serve it just like I like it!! I hate limp bacon and I finally found a place that serves bacon like I like it! This is a cozy family restaurant where regulars are known by name and orders are memorized- love it! read more

Greasy air. Small and worn restaurant. There was a sign for you to sit at a clean table. OMG, Why do people just sit at dirty tables? I've seen this so many times and always look at these people like they're fucking idiots. The Cornerstone must experience this often to have to post a sign pertaining to this. At The Cornerstone, you can't beat their early bird specials but we were there after its availability so I forget the hours and for which days. Sorry! All I remember was that it was ridiculously cheap. It's all American comfort food. Breakfast and Lunch. You can sit at a table or at the counter. The Cornerstone provides great service and someone is always going around refilling drinks sodas and coffee. The food is of large portions. I had a vegetarian omelette with bacon and was amused to find they used cheese slices on top rather than shredded cheese. Nothing really stood out for me. Your server will leave you your check and you take it up to the register at the counter to pay. I'd come back again.. but I'd try other places first. read more

My son and I go there once in a while for the eggs benedict. Eggs benedict can be tricky to find, and they don't skimp on anything. I love the coffee shop atmosphere and love the no-nonsense coffee served in the no-nonsense standard brown coffee mug. Sure, things tend to be a little sticky around the edges but I suppose it can be overlooked since the food is cheap and absolutely delicious. The general vibe is colorful which makes for a fun people-watching opportunity (though it is not - as many other greasy spoons - so full of "character" that it makes you a little uneasy.) And you almost always get your check smacked down on your table before you're finished eating - YES!! Just the way I like it. read more

I tried this place out this morning, and was happy to find that I was in time for the Early Bird special. I love a good deal. They had two specials, one where you select 3 items for $2.95. Serious. My daughter ordered eggs (2), bacon (2) and pancakes (2). She said the eggs were dry, but she liked the bacon and pancakes. I tried a bite of her pancake, it was fluffy and bland. But, I'm not a huge pancake fan (although I LOVE the pancakes at The Pancake House in Roseville). I took them up on their other special, a 2 egg omelette for $3.95. You have a choice of 3 or 4 difference omelettes and it comes with a side of home-style potatoes and your choice of toast, english muffin or a biscuit. I chose the ham and cheese omlette and a biscuit. The food came out amazingly fast, and the portions were very large. The omelette was covered in cheese (choice of American or cheddar - I went with cheddar), and there were plenty of ham chunks. It was a bit on the dry side, but it was still enjoyable. The potatoes were sooo good. Slices of potatoes browned to a wonderful crisp. Perfect texture, too. (I hate watery potatoes). The biscuit was funky-looking. It looked like a mutant toast square. They served it with honey in a packet, and it was a pleasant surprise. It looked dense, but it was crumbly and good. The table was stocked with many condiments for your choosing. The ketchup was in a squeeze bottle, so you don't have to kill your hand whacking the stupid glass bottle for 5 minutes to wrangle the ketchup out. The service was fantastic. My coffee stayed hot and refilled, but we weren't interrupted a billion times. Cozy, breakfast joint atmosphere with a sign that said to please sit at a clean table. Would I go there outside of the breakfast special deal? I don't know. Their prices were not unreasonable (I think my breakfast's normal price was about $7-8) but I'm such a hound for a good price and the food, while good, didn't knock my socks off. I REALLY want to like this place. It is soooo close to my house. But this is the third time that i have ever been here and it will certainly be the last. I can not express how terrible the food and service are. I had a breakfast burrito w potatoes. At least they called them potatoes. I do my best to avoid fast food places but occasionally I will indulge - and maybe to my benefit the cost of fast food has increased so much that I frequent those places even less. On my way to training one morning, I felt hungry but did not want a drive through and was early enough to sit and eat. I decided to stop here and I am so glad I did. I walked in and the sign indicated to seat myself so I did. I was immediately served coffee and my server, Angela, greeted me shortly thereafter. I decided to order one of the specials - spicy potato pancakes. As written on the white board it was "bacon, onion, jalapeños and cheddar cheese stuffed in potato pancakes topped with sour cream and green onion." Oh it served with bacon and eggs. Sounds great to me!! When the food arrived I had no idea how much food I was going to be served. Holy Hannah - needless to say I ate half for lunch as well. The food was well prepared and my tummy was quite happy. The service was great and everyone pleasant. One of my favorite places for breakfast in Natomas closed so I am happy to have found another place that has the same ambience and hearty and simple food. read more

LOVE Cornerstone! Sure the place isn't the best looking, but those booths are always full, people are waiting for a table and the service is great! The ladies that waitress here are so lovely, friendly and nice. If you go before 8:30am they have an AWESOME Early Bird Breakfast.
