Great classic diner! We went for breakfast and it was fantastic. I had the Hungry Man breakfast, which included eggs, hash browns, and a half-order of biscuits and gravy. Now, I go to a lot of different breakfast places and I always try the biscuits and gravy. I keep ratings on my phone for the biscuits and gravy that I've had from each place. The best I've ever had were from Stack's in Menlo Park, CA, which got a 5 out of 5 rating and helped me set the bar for all of my other ventures. This little diner in Cortez, FL, gets a 4.75 for their biscuits and gravy! The biscuit was cooked perfectly - not chewy or doughy. The gravy was the creamy and rich with lots of crumbled sausage in it. The flavor was outstanding! I will be back! read more

I hope it's not racism that I experienced today but it felt that way. I placed an order over the phone and an elderly lady just did not want to help me when I got there. Classic local breakfast joint! My wife got all the stuff you'd expect - eggs, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes all fixed right. But I decided to go with the Greek Benedict and got an awesome surprise. The mixture of tastes between the traditional English Muffin, sugar-cured slab of ham, eggs and hollandaise sauce blended beautifully with the fresh-cut tomato, spinach and feta cheese to make for an Olympian delight! It's all about expectations this is a local place and a place that many many many Senior citizens go to.... the breakfast food was good & plentiful. This is not a foodie breakfast place... they were able to cook eggs over medium which is a forgotten skill and their home fries were russet potatoes chopped with skin on and I added onions with no problem. The coffee was okay but not as strong and flavorful as I like it you just have to consider who their marketing to.... again a nice traditional breakfast place. read more

Polite,clean, inexpensive breakfast and lunch. My bride and I have been here four times and we haven't been disappointed once. Food is fresh and tasty and served hot if it's supposed to be hot. Bathrooms are clean and have paper towel dispensers versus those irritating hand blowers. Plenty of parking, plan on waiting during the tourist weekends. Definitely count us in as regulars. Update--amazing pancakes, I ordered the pancake deal and tried both types of sausage. Again everything today was hot and tasty. read more

This is one of our favorite breakfast places. The biggest problem with Cortez Cafe is that it is too many other people's favorite place!! Especially during the snow bird season you can almost plan on a short wait. There are two 6 top tables and a fair number of booths and other 4 top tables. There are about 5 seats at bar area and we've eaten there, too! There are generally four or five servers and they hustle around taking care of the crowd. The menu is varied for both breakfast and lunch with a fair assortment of traditional and Greek items for your choices. That makes since since Sam, the owner, is Greet as are a couple of the servers. If you can't find something for lunch or breakfast here you didn't try. Our regular favorite is pretty basic breakfast fare: 2 eggs (over easy), hash browns (we like them nice & buttery and kind of crispy), and either toast or a grilled biscuit. Don't expect servers in dress uniforms, or fancy china. It's a cafe!! But you can expect hot coffee, reasonable and friendly service and good food. And that's what I want when I go to one of my favorite places. read more

Definitely the best breakfast in town...eat where the locals eat. We had the pancakes, grits (wow), SOS on toast (a Philly classic), eggs Benedict and the Greek specials are a must. Even the coffee was great. Enough tables so the wait isn't long. Service was exceptional. Stopping in at the Cortez Cafe on your way to Anna Maria Island is a must. The place is always busy. The food is delish. The waitresses are hit or miss when it comes to friendliness, though. This isn't the "latest, hottest" breakfast place around but, it is the best! We've been making our way here for several years and have never been disappointed. My fallback order is corned beef hash, two poached eggs, hash brown potatoes and, rye toast. The Mrs. gets two, over- easy, hash browns and a bagel. Always prepared perfectly. Always! So, we went to Cortez Cafe, and are SO glad we did! Definitely a place for the locals! Mostly an elderly crowd, so my husband and I stuck out like a sore thumb. No worries though! Food was excellent! Some of the stuff that my group ordered was the pork roll eggs Benedict, the hungry man, SOS, country fried steak covered in sausage gravy. It was all awesome. This is a nice little local diner that does breakfast all day. Any place I can go for bacon any time gets at least 2 stars. The quality of the food was fine. The prices were fair. I hadn't been to this breakfast place in quite a few years so I decided it was time to make a return trip with my mother and husband. My husband got the Eggs Benedict and I shared the Cortezian omelette with hash browns and white toast. I had orange juice and they had the coffee. They said the coffee was good and my juice was what was expected. Noticed that this small diner was full of locals as the owner greeted them by name. The decor is pretty dated but a sign on the door said they would be closed to give them a chance to remodel. The omelette was chock full of bacon sausage ham and veggies also with two cheeses. It was very good and the potatoes were spot on. The only reason this didn't garner five stars was my husbands entree wasn't on par with other benedicts he's had. The hollandaise didn't taste homemade but out of a mix and he prefers Canadian bacon over a big slab of ham. Get here early as it fills up very fast. read more

Very large portions, the pancake looked like a hubcap, the bacon, tomato and swiss omelette was not lacking at all in ingredients, and my portion of grits was in a bowl, not just a spoonful! We were so impressed with the quick service, the place was full of customers, yet we had our drinks before we could unfold the menu! And the food was brought out "immediately", with each staff member consistently checking on us throughout our meal.
