Came in a few nights before Christmas to get takeout there for the first time and grabbed the Basic Burger with a side of onion rings. Guy behind the counter was cordial and friendly. The burger was a 4/5 the patty had good flavor, and the cheese blend went well with the sauce. The rings were a 4.5/5 really enjoyed them: big, crispy, tasty, and a decent portion size for the price. We have been seeing the buzz for this new burger joint on Coast Hwy. It opened last Sunday. Many of you know that I'm a huge foodie and a self proclaimed "burger snob" so my boyfriend Fred Rush and I decided to try it and review. Cute little street side shop moderately busy at 1pm on a Wednesday. Unique selection of burgers, creative fries, rings and tots choices and fun craft beers. I ordered the "Spicy Jam", Fred ordered the "BBQ"burgers, we split "Monkey "fries and I ordered a "Societe" craft beer. My burger was tasty not medium rare as requested but we had no idea that these advertised 6 ounce burgers were smash burgers. There's hardly any way to get a burger to order when it's two 3 oz smash burger patties instead of one 6 oz hand formed regular one. Fred said the same since we are quite particular on really liking our burgers very pink. But nonetheless it was quite tasty. 1/3 pound is a perfect size for us and the Serrano jam on mine was a great combo of spicy and sweet. I did ask to buy a tomato slice but the owner said the shop doesn't sell tomatoes. Doesn't even have them. We both found that bizarre and mentioned to the owner that that could prove inhibiting to them. Freds BBQ Burger was really enjoyed by him and he completely consumed it. The fries were unique and yummy with pickled cabbage on top along with bacon, scallions and cheese sauce. Thin, crispy fries with more than enough to share. My beer was recommended because I asked for the lightest craft beer they offered and the Societe went down smoothly and quickly. A great recommendation. Overall, we would have preferred a hand formed regular patty but appreciate the 6 oz size. The choices are unique, service quick and friendly with the prices mid range for the coastal area. We really hope they add an option to get tomato slices and will definitely give them a second try. We'd love to see 4 local guys do well . When discussing our opinions with one of the owners, he told us they also opened a shop in the Windmill Food Hall in Carlsbad. This is literally the best burger I've ever had. I sit here writing this in complete disbelief at the quality of food that exists in downtown oceanside. We had plenty of options, but decided to come to Cosmos in a whim. The price point is incredible for what you get. Onion rings cooked to perfection-- even when they've been sitting out for a little too long. My Ivan got a Spicy Jam burger while I got the Truffle burger. We both have been sitting in silence for 15 minutes waiting to find the words to describe how good the burgers were. Service was incredibly quick too, and the staff has been so so kind. All I can say about this place is I am so stoked and so happy that we finally have a really dope burger place that is open until midnight on the weekends. Yet... They have the crunch and still soft inside, not like those large cut fries that are crunchy but like mashed potatoes inside. The decor of the place is simple but nice a clean. It was a rainy night when we went there and a little cool inside not sure if they had a heater but it was comfortable for me, some people may complain about the temp but oh well. I found it to be very expensive. I had the cosmos burger. It came with no sides. The burger was no more than 4 for 5 inches. If you wanted sides (fries, tata tots), it was between $6.00-7.00. Frozen thin fries covered with one soggy chicken finger and nothing special sauce/cheese sauce. I ordered the cosmos burger with a side of onion rings, and everything was excellent! The burger patty was seasoned to perfect as well as the onion rings. I'm willing to say some of the best onions rings you can order at any restaurant. They feature a tasty battery and hardy crunch. I give this place a 4 out of 5 only because my 2nd experience a few days later wasn't as good but still decent just a few things lacking as much flavor as my first visit.
