Wow, this was terrible. Parking was an absolute nightmare. We parked on the street and no one had shoveled the sidewalk so our party basically had chunks of snow all over us by the time we got into the restaurant. We order and then it takes about 45 minutes to get our food. When we requested free dessert because of the wait our waiter told us that was a typical wait. Bullshit. I ordered the raspberry lamb with gnocchi. The lamb was fine...the gnocchi was a different story. The raspberry juices seeped into the gnocchi and made it pretty disgusting. Kinda of like a raspberry gummy bear made out of pasta. Our waiter was CREEPY and seemed to appear out of nowhere. He often stared at us and addressed us in a peculiar manner. read more

For weekend brunch, this place is one of the best you'll find. The adventure begins by walking through the awesome neighborhood Irish bar, O'Duffy's, located on the main floor. Climb the staircase and discover the warm environment; exposed brick walls, wood ceilings and wood floors with some quiet background music. Order a Bloody Mary, a Mimosa or anything from the full bar from downstairs to accompany the nice cup of coffee. Then the food. Always outstanding. The malted or buckwheat waffles are a staple with a waffle special usually available. Today's waffle was stuffed with bacon and sharp Irish cheddar and topped with orange marmalade and green onions. The homemade corned beef hash (recall the Irish bar downstairs) with poached eggs and hollandaise with rye bread is mouth watering goodness. Every order is usually accompanied by some fresh sliced fruit on the side. Locally owned by the same couple for many years....It's worth the trip every time. read more

I have been dining at Cosmo's now since they opened in 1992! Hidden away in the Vine Neighborhood this little gem will satisfy the discerning palette on the pricey side of things, but for this foodie I usually get what I pay for and I pay for the DUCK!! I am speaking of the Oven Roasted Duck Breast! Simply amazing, a Rosemary rubbed duck breast (get it medium rare) sliced thinly, finished with a cherry balsamic reduction, fresh berries, and served with our mashed sweet potatoes and a petite arugula salad. As is the pumpkin cheese cake (Seasonal). I would love to give you more insight on the other menu items but I can not get myself to order anything else. Duck is what chicken strives to be, but falls short on so my levels. If you have not had the pleasure of Succulent duck meat, this is the place to try it. As for the service, I have not had any issues with the wait staff, slow at times but anything worth consuming here is worth waiting for. Especially when it finally arrives it is pure magic! We visit this place nearly once per month for breakfast, but the past two times have been severely lacking. They serve breakfast on the weekends. Sometimes they don't, though. I'm not sure why they are sometimes closed on the weekends. I'll share my most recent experience today: We were sat immediately. About half of the restaurant was occupied, so not overly busy. Took approximately 10 minutes to get coffee and water. We ordered after another 10 minutes. Waitress wasn't overly friendly. We ordered our food and it took about 35 minutes to arrive. That's completely too long to wait for breakfast. Plus, we never got refills on our coffee until my dad flagged down the waitress who was refilling a gentleman's coffee near us. When we dug into our food, I noticed my omelet had some uncooked vegetables. I ordered the cucina omelet. It was advertised as: "A light fluffy omelette with tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and cheddar cheese. Served with toast." The vegetables were not cooked. They were cold, raw and served underneath a fluffy egg omelet which had no flavor. I ate the eggs with hot sauce and when the server came to check on us, I told her it was a poor omelet and explained that the mushrooms and veggies were raw. She responded by saying she doesn't eat mushrooms so wasn't sure how they were supposed to be served. No sorry or anything. I told her I didn't want to order anything to replace it because it took so long and would prefer a discount since it didn't seem like it was made correctly. She brought it back to the kitchen. When she came back, she said she gave us a percentage discount and explained that the omelets are served, "french style" and that's why the vegetables are raw. She still didn't apologize. I have never heard of french omelets, but gave her the benefit of the doubt. Why doesn't the menu list it that way? For the record, I googled "french style" and it simply implies no milk used to prepare the eggs but plenty of butter and no mention of raw vegetables. I didn't taste butter. I think perhaps the kitchen lost our order or hurried on my omelet since it took so long to be served. Also, my toast was cold. My husband reported that the few seasoned breakfast potatoes he was served were under-cooked. That's the second time we've been served very few potatoes which would seem to be a staple on a meal consisting of potatoes, eggs and toast. He doesn't eat meat, so it seems reasonable that they would pile on some potatoes since they are fairly cheap. My parents each had few potatoes on their plates, too. We won't be back for a long time. Crow's Nest on Westnedge is still our all-time favorite breakfast place, so we definitely wouldn't go back here as long as Crow's Nest is still around. read more

I should have read the reviews before coming here because they were spot on. So I made a 10am reservation for 6 people on a Saturday. We arrived at 9:40 and were immediately seated. It took about 10 minutes before someone came over and took our drink order. At this time I just ordered everything because lord knows when they will return. First there is no kids menu and the food is pricey for breakfast. We order the food around 9:50am...I look down at my watch and now it is 10:42, and still no sign of food. The food finally comes out at 10:47. My waffle is not hot. I can tell it has been sitting out. Now, it was an amazing buckwheat waffle. Too bad it took a lifetime to get it. Probably won't return. It seems slow service is something they always struggle with. read more

The short version: Breakfast Food-average. Coffee-average diner coffee. Service-in need of improvement. This review is based on 2 sunday brunch visits to Cosmos in the last 3 weeks. And the 2 stars are only brought up from 1 star because of our outside dining experience. EATING OUTSIDE--Eating on the patio is the ONLY reason to go to Cosmos. We were greeted fairly promptly and with a smile. Seated outside. The patio is a great space to enjoy a meal. The server was good (perhaps new) and was apologizing for doing her job. "Sorry I have so many specials to tell you about..." and telling us the bread was '"from Meijer... Pepperidge Farm, I think" When the food arrived it was okay. Nothing blew our minds but it was good. Portions on the scrambled eggs were generous. Again the meal was average but enhanced with the patio seating. EATING INSIDE--A far less than desirable experience. We walked up to the host stand and had 2 employees make eye contact (one who was a server grabbing something at the host stand) and not say anything to us, but within 3 or 4 minutes the host returned to the host stand and sat our party of two. Inside tables are much closer to it is harder for your neighbors conversation not to impeded on yours, but this is tolerable. A server assistant brought water and got coffee and let us know the server, Lexie, would be right over. The server then arrive and was really an order taker. Immediately asking what we wanted. She didn't even have a greeting or introduction. I asked if there were any specials, to which she replied that yes, they had 3 special waffles and listed them off grocery-list style. At this point things were still fine and acceptable. She returned a few minutes later to take our order. She was to the point and efficient but not really personable with us or any other tables of hers near us. We then proceed to wait 56 minutes for two orders of scrambled eggs, potatoes and toast. Service at Cosmos is typically slow so I wasnt concerned until I started looking around and saw a table of 4 sat after us had their food and their plate were being cleared and we didn't have our food yet... that is when I began attempting to grab our servers attention. She made eye contact once or twice but didn't make an effort to come over. She seemed aware their was an issue and was just waiting for the food. I don't think it was totally a kitchen issue. She then brought out our food, we ate and the food was good... nothing special. She never checked back with us or make apology when she brought the food about how long it took. Brought the check and cashed it out without any personal interaction... just set it down and picked it up. I left a note on the back of the check as there was no comment card. I want to love this place. The patio is fabulous to sit and enjoy a meal on in nice weather. But service has to be at least passable. read more

This place is so freaking cute. It's kind of hidden away in Kalamazoo, with a more bar-type place below, but if you walk up the stairs it is so laid-back and pretty without being over the top. I've been here for breakfast (obviously!) and for a dinner date. For breakfast, I've gotten the buckwheat belgian waffle almost every time. I can never finish it all, but I just keep getting it... so yummy. For the dinner, my date brought flowers and they even gave us a vase to put them in while we ate! The wine was good, and while my arugula & sundried tomato pasta entree didn't really blow me away, it was good enough and I would return to try other things off the dinner menu. read more

Tried today for the first time. We (my boyfriend and I) got there at about 10:00am, which is sort of a busy time on a Sunday. We wanted to sit outside, so we waited. "Just 15 mins" turned into 40 mins. Then after we promptly ordered our food, it was another 30 min and our food was cold and hard. We didn't want to send it back, however, since we had already waited a long time. The servers were friendly and offered us coffee while waiting. But they were also just chatting with some of the regulars while we had dirty dishes and needed our check. Also, the "regular couple" got their food 15 mins before us. We placed our order before them as well. Perhaps they ordered while waiting in line but i just felt we were kind of being ignored. The physical atmosphere was pleasant otherwise. read more

I absolutely love and miss Cosmo's. I lived in Kalamazoo for 10 years and loved every meal I had there! I now live in the SF Bay area and am very sad I am so far away. Truly one of my favorite restaurants ever! And I've eaten at a lot of different places. So sorry to see some negative reviews and bad experiences. That was never my experience. In fact a few times when I did not like my entree they quickly offered me a replacement. No issue. And btw, the best TIramisu anywhere hands down! Went for Sunday brunch which is a change from what we usually go there to have which is dinner and drinks. I'm not too keen at eating at the same place I would for dinner that I would for breakfast because I don't think that places can do both well. We ordered eggs bennie and a malted waffle which I thought would have the strawberries insides of the waffle but they just put them on the top. Eggs bennie was good but not the best we have ever had. Service was not great and they weren't full inside. They do have a nice outside deck but it was too humid that day for us to sit outside and enjoy our meal. read more

We've been to Cosmo's (upstairs) for breakfast/dinner and O'Duffy's (downstairs) for lunch/drinks. I usually order the "Breakfast Special" with scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and redskins. I don't know where they get the bacon, but it is thick cut and also a favorite of mine. Service is always friendly, professional, and top notch. If you don't like TVs to distract you, there are none here. O'Duffy's makes a surprisingly good hamburger for an Irish pub. Only one negative--it can get a bit LOUD downstairs at night. Otherwise, make sure you check both of these places out. It is definitely worth the trip! read more

THE BEST BACON EVER!!! You have to drive 400 miles to the West Bay Diner to get bacon that is this good... trust me I know. My friends and I started coming here for Saturday morning breakfasts during the winter of 92/93 and it has always been a favorite place ever since. I believe in giving people second chances. Unfortunately, the amount of chances for Cosmos has expired. I have been here many times over the past 5 years and there is always something unpleasant about the dining experience. I am sad to write this review because I love eating local and supporting Kalamazoo businesses. But, I cannot stand to see people make the mistakes I have made without being informed. Given the solid competition for dining experiences in Kalamazoo, I would have hoped Cosmos would have worked out the kinks by now. The main problems are very poor service, poor interpersonal skills by the wait staff, food that can be (but not always) average, exorbitant wait times to get anything, like a drink, a coffee refill, or your bill. Our wait time for eggs, sausage, and toast (for two) was easily 45 minutes. I am convinced that our order was lost, as there were several more complex orders sent out to 4 different patrons before our food was served. By the time our orders were made, we were told they were now out of something we ordered. Hmmm, perhaps if our order had been made properly, we would not have had that problem. There is such a negative vibe sent out by the cooks and it is obvious that they are inflexible. The worst response we ever heard was "we are out of egg whites." But yet, they continue to turn out omelets and Benedict dishes. In my opinion, the management should clean house back there and out front and hire people who want to work in a customer service industry. When you do wait, do not expect for it to be acknowledged or compensated, except by the kind hostess. She was the only bright spot there this morning. In closing, let the boycott begin. I will happily spend my money and time at Food Dance, Crow's nest, Theo and Stacy's, LaRue's, and Studio Grille. read more

One of my favorite restaurant in Kalamazoo, Cosmo's is located above O'Duffy's Pub on Vine. It's a neighborhood place that draws friends and family from the area for some of the best seasonal food around. My favorite is the butternut squash lasagna. The menu is always changing, so there are always new and exciting dishes to try. The atmosphere is quiet and usually cast in intimate shadow. There was no host so there was like 8 people just standing in the tiny hallway waiting. We didn't really know who our server was no one really came around. Had to flag some kid down for more coffee and had to get up and grab the ketchup from another table. Once our food was dropped off nobody came back to check up on us or anything. The "omelette" was seriously disgusting. Just a giant chunk of over cooked egg with a little bit of nasty shrimp and old spinach underneath. Honestly just go to IHOP. Not worth it at all. read more

The limited and seasonal menu leads me to believe that the chefs involved take their jobs seriously. Cosmos's has given me not only the best Italian stew but, duck, I've had in a very long time.Also, a Mimosa and Eggs Benedict with Rosemary Potatoes might make you forget your religion as a post-church brunch... Made a reservation months ago for brunch before my daughter's graduation. I called and confirmed several times because we needed wheelchair accessibility. Graduation is on Sunday and on Saturday they called me to say that they would be closed for Father's Day. I had 12 people coming from 3 different towns for Graduation. This morning I received a notice from Yelp confirming our reservation for today. I got excited and called, no one answered. Do not trust a reservation here. This place has slipped in recent years and some may say from some terrible losses. I used to consider it a solid back up if Crow's Nest was packed, that time passed a few years ago. D.K., you take great photos, however, they are obviously pre-planned as the food just doesn't come out like that here or any of the places you have posted about. Cosmos Cucina was an epic disappointment, beginning with the fact that the building houses 2 separate establishments, with no differential signage... unless you count the 8x10 laminated sign that says it near the back of the bar downstairs. After climbing a steep staircase (way to be ADA compliant!) we were the only patrons there at 7pm, with the exception of a few folks on the deck enjoying happy hour. After ordering our food, we sort-of expected bread, it is after all a "fine Italian dining" establishment. No bread. My date ordered vodka pasta, honestly it could've been spaghetti-o's on his plate. I ordered the salmon pasta... honestly believe that was canned salmon in my pasta. We paid and tipped well (the service was excellent, and the atmosphere upstairs on the deck was perfect, which are the reasons for stars 1 and 2. The hard part was not removing a star this morning after spending the ENTIRE NIGHT in the bathroom from food poisoning. Ugh. Chalk this one up to do not go back. Had dinner at Cosmo's last weekend and it was a treat! The menu is interesting with some good variety, including vegetarian which was important for our group. I opted for the pork fried rice and it was really tasty. Great flavor. This place is not large but I think it has a nice atmosphere.
