My experience here was for breakfast after a stay at the Graves and my breakfast ended up being comped because of issues at the Graves (for more on that see my Graves review). So with that said, I definitely at least got my money's worth! As I mentioned in my review of the hotel, the little touches were missing for a place this highly revered. Take a look at the faux-wood on the pillars in the middle of the room; there are many placed where this is coming loose and bubbling up. Picky? Yeah, but shouldn't you be in a place like this. The seating was an attempt at uniqueness, but when you really look at the chairs their just cheap, uncomfortable seats. The service was very good and the food was quick. Oddly, for a morning after a sold out night at the hotel, there were only three tables with guests at 10:00 AM on a Sunday. I found this odd. My wife ordered the eggs benedict, which she loved. I had a bite and the hollandaise sauce was rich and delicious. I ordered an omelet and was not impressed at all. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The same could be said for the potatoes that came with it; not bad, but nothing that I'm going to crave in the future. I was going to give three stars but I truly have had much better food in similar environments. Heck, I've had better breakfasts in chain restaurants! That combined with a less than stellar decor makes it hard to judge a restaurant that is attempting to be this high level any more favorably. read more

After a short flight from San Francisco and a quick taxi ride to the city, I finally made it to Minneapolis! First thing was first: check into the hotel, unpack and grab a bite to eat. My new coworker, mentioned a place in the hotel that offers really good food. I had an hour before they closed so I ran over and just in time! This restaurant is located on the 4th floor of the Loews hotel. It's a super dramatic space. Huge pillars, low lit intimate lighting, long drapes and hanging glass pieces to block the bar area. The tiling on the floor and glassware on the table tops really solidify the regal setting. The staff treated me in that same consistent manner. They were very professional and definitely served in the manner of a high end restaurant. For dinner, I started with the Banfi Pinot Grigio for $8. To me, it tasted more like a riesling with a bite. It didn't taste like a pinot grigio I'm used to. I don't know how expensive of a bottle it is, but it was a little too sweet for what I was expecting. As a starter, I got the wild rice soup for $9. It was roasted chicken, porcini mushrooms and wild rice. OH EM GEE! This was a great soup! Super hearty and filled with chicken and rice! I've had a lot of wild rice soups in the past and this has to be one of my favorites! Lots of flavors and textures. For dinner, I got the Pan Seared Sea Scallops for $30. 3 seared scallops, a square of crispy pork belly over parsnip puree, compressed apple-fig salad and arugula oil. I LOVED the pork belly. Talk about the perfectly cooked crispy belly. It was crispy and salty, marbleized and flavorful! So good! The scallops were perfectly seared, loved the crispy tips and soft inside. My only criticism was that it was too salty. Thank goodness for the sweet parsnip and the tangy salad to help cut through the salt. All in all a good dish though! I'm definitely a fan of this place! The food was great for the most part, the ambiance was awesome and I felt well taken care of. I think this is a great addition to a fabulous hotel. If you're downtown, remember that you don't' need to stay at Loews to enjoy this place. Come by and check it out! read more

My soon to be in laws were in town a couple of weeks ago, and were staying at the Graves. We met them at Cosmos for drinks on one night and breakfast the next morning. The drinks were expensive, but worth the splurge on a rare occasion. I had the Moulin Rouge and the Asian Pear Martinis. The Moulin Rouge was good, but the Asian Pear was fantastic. It comes with a little drunken pear at the bottom of it that was quite a tasty way to finish off the drink. I highly recommend that one if you're only got the cash to splurge on a single drink. As for the breakfast, I had their Brioche French Toast because, I'll admit it, with the exception of scrambled eggs I'm a carbs-only breakfast kind of girl. Omelets and breakfast meats don't really do it for me. It was pretty tasty, but somewhat over-the-top sweet. Between the chocolate syrup, the maple syrup, the whipped cream, the powdered sugar AAAAAAAAAAAND the butter, even my sweet tooth was crying out for some relief. After the first piece, I knocked off all the whipped cream and other stuff and just kept it classic with butter and maple syrup or I would have had to run straight to the dentist afterwards... I agree with Char - the apple juice I had was ridiculously overpriced. For what my very kind future in laws paid for it, I hope the apples were not only organic, but also on some sort of endangered species list for fruit... seriously. The wait service was good, though. They're definitely the reason I tipped in favor of four stars instead of three. Both servers were attentive and very helpful with suggestions. Huge, huge fan. It's a shame that it's tucked away in a hotel in a windowless area on the 4th floor because it deserves more of a presence than what it gets. Don't get me wrong - the space is v. cool. Big tip: they offer seasonal menus that were once $35 but have been reduced to a STEAL at $19.95 (or is it .99? Whatever) due to the economy. You cannot beat this deal...I don't even think their upcoming restaurant week offerings come at this price. What we got for the Fall '09 menu: -an amuse bouche of pureed salsify topped with salmon and a crispy leek. Nice and peppery, rich. Pretty damn autumnal if you ask me. -appetizer selection of lobster bisque or shrimp. We all got the bisque...a little lighter/less creamy than usual, and thankfully not salty at all. Delicious. -palate cleanser that just smacked of some fancy Manhattan Top Chef-esque touch: a limeade "shooter" with a cherry bomb and Pop Rocks topping! -entrées included Atlantic salmon, vegetarian penne dish, and something with pork or other. The salmon was fantastic - the lemon cream sauce was out of this world. -dessert: gelato or sorbet, chocolate gateau, chocolate cake This seasonal menu is not advertised, and I have no idea about its availability, but the price is MADNESS for the quality of food that we got. I consider myself a 'foodie' and am from the Bay Area where wonderful, high quality restaurants abound. Cosmos can hold a candle to any top notch restaurant in San Francisco. Service was top notch and on time consistently, food was fresh, creative and excellent from beginning to end. The environment was pleasant, not too loud, but loud enough you could have a private conversation, the hostess spaces the patrons apart when possible. Dinner for two, with no limitations was $240 including the tip. Have a nice meal!! read more

Odd that I'd never been here before. Well, I'd been, but I'd never consumed. I was at Envision last night and popped down for a drink since the lines were a little long. I was very happy with my mojito and service. If my head had been more in the game (i.e. it hadn't been about midnight and i hadn't already consumed a few vodka drinks) I would have tried some of the more interesting drinks that I read about in the other reviews here. But being a little slow I just did a "i'll have what she's having". Oh, and to the man who was sitting at the bar near us: I'm sorry for so annoyingly and drunkingly trying to set you up with my friend. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went (a Wednesday night), but it doesn't hurt to make a reservation. The ambiance was soothing, and the staff was polite. Our waiter was quirky but gave us great suggestions and honest opinions. I remember the amuse bouche being fantastic, and the interesting palate cleanser (not sure what it's called) in between the appetizer and entree to be fruity and tasty. So, I have been to Cosmos on 2 different ends of the spectrum- breakfast and late night drinks. Breakfast: Ok, its pricey. But its delicious, filling, fancy, luxurious, and the service is very attentive. The breakfast scene is pretty sparse, but that can be nice. The servers are quiet, attentive, and keep the coffee coming. There are little jam jars. I always take them. There are little honey pots, I always take them. *Note, I'm not stealing. I'm just...taking the leftovers home, right?* honestly, the food was totally worth the special breakfast date. Drinks: There's spicy snack mix. I've never been to a bar with snack mix. I'm in love. Anyway, I got a sort of gin/lime juice/mint drink. Nothing extreme, but the liquor was strong, the seltzer water was fresh, and the mint was plentiful. It was a really quality drink. Downside? Cubed ice. It waters drinks down. And if the drinks range from $12-$15, I'd expect a large round or square cube like you'd find at Bradstreet, Eat Street, or Marvel Bar. *This is why I give this place 4 stars* read more

Restaurant 3/4 for Restaurant Week. I've been here before and loved my experience, so I had to come back for the deal! Last time I was there, it wasn't as busy so the staff were extremely attentive. This time, it was sporadic service. Last time, my food was great! I loved every course I had -- too bad I can't remember what I had :) It was too long ago. My favorite part of the whole experience are the shooters. The Palate Cleansers are so freaking awesome. I am so curious as to how they make them. I love how they burst in your mouth. For dinner last night, I had Seared Diver Scallops, Beef Tenderloin and the Panna Cotta. The scallops were amazing -- perfectly cooked and seasoned. Presentation was so pretty I didn't want to eat it! My tenderloin wasn't very good at all though. It was extremely dry, I probably wouldn't want to eat it again. Dessert was scrumptious. Texture of the Panna Cotta was so smooth that it just slid down my throat. (I was also excited to learn today that their pastry chef is a local Vietnamese person!) I love the decor in this place. I wouldn't might just sitting there to lounge on a random day. We stayed at the Graves 601 and had dinner one night while we were there. My husband and I started our evening out in the bar (unfortunately Bradstreet Crafthouse had a private event). Tried their "cosmos martini" and shrimp tempura appetizer (8 large shrimp for $10). Both were outstanding. We were seated in the dining room and had a cozy spot but the restaurant was not very busy that evening. Our meal started out with a special treat from the chef (crab with almond crumbs and apple twist). Also had the grilled romaine with infused croutons. (The dressing was inside each crouton). Before dinner we had another surprise (the apricot infused fennel explosion). For my entree I tried the lobster pasta with broccolini. My husband had the sea bass. Both were excellent although mine could of come out a little hotter. The chef provided truffles to top off our dinner. Service was good. Overall this is a perfect spot for a "special occasion" but I enjoy a more casual dining experience. Also a great spot if you're looking to get a bite to eat in the bar area before or after an event at Target Center or after a baseball game. Keep in mind that this place is upscale. read more

Occasionally The Fiance and I like to dress up, go out and pretend we have money. It usually makes for an interesting night. Anyway, he decided on Cosmos a couple weeks ago and it was really nice. The food (Chicken Sausage Stuffed Chicken and the Duck) was prepared wonderfully. Everything was great, including the famous Chocolate Globe. Although quite pricey, for the Chocolate Fanatic (ME!!) it is well worth it. I don't think I've ever had better quality chocolate in my life...even The Fiance loved we. We kinda fought over it, so you know it was good. Our server was wonderful and attentive and the atmosphere was very cool. Overall, it was a really fun night. I moved here from Indiana and needed a nice place to take my girlfriend for her 21st bday. I was told that comos would be a really nice place for us and a small group of friends to go and get a nice meal. Man was I wrong. When I made the reservation I booked the private V.I.P room for all of us..little did I know that VIP must secretly mean a nicely decorated box that servers seem to forget exists. The whole dinner took over 2 hours and none of us ordered appetizers or dessert. It took the waitress over 20 min to bring us drinks and the restaurant and bar wasnt even busy. The portions were extremely small and the steak I ordered came out luke-warm at best and full of fat. For $130 I thought they could at least give the two of us a filling meal. The only saving grace to this experience was when my girlfriend e-mailed them the next day to complain about her birthday experience they did send us a gift card for $100 in hopes of our return. We did go back- we ended up getting a whole 7 drinks at the bar. I also would like to compliment the forgien man who refilled our waters, he may not have spoke much english but he was the most attentive person in the whole place. my first experience was 5 star, this time was a 4. besides the beginning service, everything else flowed well. food came out at a perfect pace which made our dinner experience 2 hours long (didn't feel like it though). we came here for restaurant week so i can't say if our portions were full or maybe 3/4. i saw someone else order tuna tartare and it was presented differently. ah well. onto the menu: amuse bouche. an enjoyable surprise. ahi tuna tartare: the best! fresh and satisfying. crab cake: a-ok; not the best i've had. palate cleanser (can't remember if that was before or after our entree) that bursts in your mouth for a fun treat. chilean sea bass: not much to say besides the cauliflower "risotto" was better than i had expected. (i don't like cauliflower) tenderloin: grilled perfectly! truffle pommes paille were the best ever!!! chocolate cake with ice cream: double treat is always great creme brulee: burnt with enough taste with no burnt taste.. complimentary chocolate truffles: who doesn't like chocolate? overall, the experience was wonderful and i'd go back again if someone wanted to go. if you could request a server, i'd ask for the older gentleman with glasses and gray/black hair. he seemed to be engaged with his customers unlike our waiter. he barely came around and he didn't even come by to ask if we wanted another glass of wine! we were not at all particular with anything and didn't even ask for anything extra (except for a steak knife) so we were easy dining patrons :) read more

We were in town for a convention and had some time to kill. Our newly-local friend suggested a really trendy cocktail place in the same building, but it was too packed to accommodate all of us so we went upstairs to Cosmos. First of all, the building's interior design is stunning. I was in love the minute I walked in. It continues when you get into Cosmos. It is beautiful. I wanted to stay there all night. We went on a Saturday night and we didn't get there too early, but it was pretty slow in terms of other guests. We sat at a large bar height table right when we walked in, to the left of the bar, and the other side of the place looked a little busier. No matter. We enjoyed ourselves. Husband had a lychee martini and that was pretty cool - I've never eaten a lychee fruit before so I was fortunate enough to have one of those soaked in alcohol. We all left at separate times and were able to pay separately which was nice. If I am ever in town again, I would gladly go back. read more

Bottom line, the food is really delicious. The yellow fin tuna small plate (which can be made as an entree) was among the most memorable dishes I've had over the past couple months. There's something a little off with the service every time I go there, but it's not terrible. They're generally on the slow side. Hidden upstairs inside a fancy hotel this "hotel restaurant" was surprisingly good. I selected this place for breakfast because they source local organic humanely raised ingredients. For the quality, it was surprisingly empty, maybe because the prices are at boutique hotel restaurant levels. The servers were very relaxed and friendly. The cleanliness was average (dinnerware all good, but drapes and decor seemed a bit dusty and tabletops in need of an update). Would go back next time in town. read more

Had a fantastic overall experience at Cosmos last night with my wife and a couple of friends. Started in the lounge with some cocktails. Extensive menu of interesting selections plus a bunch of good wines by the glass (and even better by the bottle). Moved to the dining room for an amazing dinner. Started with the outstanding service of Tim. He knew all of the subtleties of the menu and was not shy about making suggestions. The flexibility to make minor changes to dishes or mix and match different things was great. You don't always get this at a nice restaurant. Quick rundown of our meal: We each ordered a different starter. Tuna tartare was amazing. Super fresh tuna served with a small amount of sriracha based sauce (I think) and a dollop of avocado ice cream. Heirloom beet salad was equally as good. Spring salad was simple yet delicious. Best of all was the forest mushroom "toast". Can't do it justice with a description, but it was incredible. When Tim saw us having a hard time choosing from all of the wonderful menu options, he suggested they could do a second course of a single scallop for each of us. What a great idea! Allowed us to get a small taste of another tasty dish. Perfectly cooked scallop with fried chick peas (what a unique idea - made the dish) and a great simple sauce. Easily one of the best scallop dishes I have ever had. For the main course my wife ordered the veal tenderloin. Our friend ordered this as well. It was cooked perfectly. They start by cooking the tenderloin sous-vide and then finishing it on the broiler. Resulted in an even temperature throughout with a very light caramelization on the outside. It was served with wonderful sides and an amazing light bernaise sauce. I had the lamb dish which was equally as good. Again, perfectly prepared and the right doneness throughout. Also served with unique sides and sauce, and an interesting "painting" of a yogurt based sauce on the plate. Outstanding. Finally, our other friend had a "duet" of two small plates (another of Tim's suggestions). An amazing butter poached lobster and a small pasta dish. She loved it and it was exactly what she was hoping for. All in all one of the best nights of dining we have had in the twin cities. Will definitely be back! read more

Tea comes - no cup? Cup comes - no spoon? Potatoes buttery and peppery. Asparagus baked to a charred end. Smokey-not in a good way. Egg poached perfect. Muffin toasted too large for the food. Overwhelming. Walleye subtle with a lovely breading. Hollandaise wonderful. Light, and not overly citrusy. Walleye seasoned feels like a hint of dill as a compliment. read more

My sidekick (a.k.a. "The Claw") wanted some dessert, and ordered something with peanut butter and chocolate (his defaults). My challenge to him: "I want you to sum it up in 3 words" The long narrow plate arrived with a nouveau cuisine presentation of 4 blobs of something, a wafer of some sort, and the requisite fancy drizzle of goo. He immediately piped "Tries too hard" and so does the rest of the place. overly funky interior, oddly dressed bartenders walking around in vests that seemed to be lost cousins of assless chaps (the vests, not the bartenders), and a bit too cavernous and cold to really distract you from the arctic climate outside. I would assume locals don't come here and it's only frequented by guests or high rollers attending a game across the street at the Target Center. read more

We went on NYE for their 5 course prix-fixe menu. From the food to the drinks to the service, the evening was impeccable! First course was a small green salad. Second course was roasted artichoke ravioli with scallops; my favorite dish of the evening. The ravioli was light & delicious. Third course was Poussin. Fourth course was an amazing strip steak with red wine risotto & braised oxtail. Fifth course was a chocolate soufflé. Since we went to the 9:30p seating, we were done in roughly 2 hours. We stuck around our table for a champagne toast at midnight & then headed to the lounge area for a while to have a night cap & people watch. One of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. Located on a lower floor of a modern hotel in dowtown, Cosmos is unique to say the least. The decor is modern and large in scale. Great lighting, materials, and simple architecture create an amazing ambiance that is shocking given that Cosmos serves 3 meals a day, everyday. I've been here for a date, business dinner, and by myself because I felt like it. No matter what - I left impressed. Excellent cocktails (I had "wistful thinking") and great food but the best part is the buttermilk chess pie for dessert. One of the best desserts I have ever had in my life. Comes with sherbet, pistachio crumble (or something) and this marshmallow like cream. Amazing!!!! This restaurant is nestled in the Wyndham hotel and is rarely crowded. The food is nicely prepared, service attentive and a good selection of both rich and healthy options. Good for business travelers that might dine alone. Atmosphere is trendy (similar to a scaled down W hotel). Very nice for a hotel restaurant, but I probably wouldn't go here unless I were in the neighborhood. read more

Very attentive service and a restaurant location beautiful enough to be a movie set, but the food just didn't do it for me. Mozzarella burrata and heirloom tomatoes: fresh but way too straightforward. Crispy suckling pig: I expected more of a traditional piece of pork with the crispy skin I so often crave, but trust very few restaurants to make correctly. This place did a weird U-turn with the dish, transforming suckling pig into what I'd describe as a crab cake made out of pulled pork. Not a fan of the texture. read more

Third stop on Restaurant week and I was pretty pleased! Décor: Dark, blue and trendy. IMHO, it's not that inviting. It had that 'clique-y feel' that didn't seem to seek to make everyone welcome. Food: - Beef carpaccio: This is my first. Thinly sliced beef, very tender and moist. I forgot what it was seasoned/sauced with but what I do remember was that it was a bit overpowering for me. - Crab cakes: DELECTABLE AND DIVINE! Best crab cakes I've ever had- freshly done, simple and has just a good grilled crab flavor through and through. Kudos :) - Intermezzo/Lemon Raspberry Explosion: Something of a yolk of 'explosion' and FANTASTIC. Everyone (including me) could not stop raving about this. It was so amazing, refreshing and perfect for an intermezzo that it was almost a shame that we couldn't get another, haha. - Salmon: I wish I had gotten something else that was more 'adventurous', because the chef(s?) in the back are definitely talented. The salmon was buttery, flaky and fantastic--to the point that I was disappointed it was so good and wish I had tried something else that stretched my culinary mind. But ah well, I still enjoyed this. Oh, and the little shaped potato puree were a very nice touch - I don't even know what to call the dessert (See pictures). I didn't know that the dish had some depth when I first tried it. So when my spoon sunk into it, I was at first amazed and my taste buds were later delighted! I did not like the flakes on top, but the custards wen together very well and was FANTASTIC!! - Ah, we also did the wine pairing with the meal. I found all the wines to be on the more acidic/drier side, but my friend liked it all. - After dinner chocolates: very nice touch. Overall: Creative culinary dishes here! I have to admit, the dishes don't make the greatest food porn pictures, but it definitely was absolutely fantastic to enjoy in my mouth. P & I were going to a Twolves game and needed to find somewhere to have dinner. We went on a Monday night to find Bradstreet was not open so we came up to Cosmos and had dinner at the bar. We both got the burger and it was really good (and cheaper than a hot dog at Target Center). It wasn't crowded. I didn't realize I was taking my parents to the most glam place in Minneapolis, but it was good food, service, people watching and very cool interior design work. Pretentious is a word that could come to mind, but I think it was probably just a few of the guests carrying that vibe, not the staff. Anyplace offering individual cloth hand towels in the restrooms is a treat in my book. The drink menu was uber-cool and everything was mixed just right upon presentation too. The food was top notch. Best to come here when someone else is paying or you want to get rid of some change. Definitely worth it for an occasional special meal. read more

Stopped in for some cocktails before dinner. We actually planned on going to the bar on the first floor of the Graves but it is closed on Sunday (or at least the Sunday we stopped by.) The cocktail list here caters to a -tini crowd and the level of non -tini cocktail definitely suffers. I was served one of the worst Knob Creek Sazeracs I have had in quite some time. My wife drink off the -tini menu wan't any better (but was loaded with sugary sweetness - typically of a -tini drink.) We didn't get food here, and that could be the saving grace of Cosmos. I'm not sure, but I might be willing to give it another try. However, for cocktails I'd head the few block to The Grand Hotel and visit the lobby bar Six15. Far better drinks at comparable prices. read more

Cosmos was pretty dead. We were the only people at the bar initially and I still found the service slow. The staff just yacked amongst themselves until I basically interrupted. Drinks were decent, but my Johnie Walker was a pretty small pour. The food was quite tasty, but portions were small. Not worth the price imho. read more

This restaurant is fantastic!! Nestled in the ever so trendy the graves hotel, it was default pick for a late dinner on Sunday. The decor was in line with the hotel, very contemporary, very trendy. The food was awesome!!! From appetizers to desserts, everything was cooked to perfection. I love this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone. Guys, this is the place for a date night to impress your lady with ambiance and great food. You can thank me later! read more
