And surprise, the recommendation wasn't to replace the entire unit, which I feel most companies push these days. Another company that we are on a maintenance program with gave our furnace the "all good" in October. It crapped out in February. They came and said we needed a new furnace without apologies about how undetailed their maintenance inspection was. I call the Cost Plus team for a second opinion. They had the furnace up and running after cleaning and draining a line and doing a FULL inspection. Their team saved us 7k in 30 minutes. I would definitely recommend Steve. I had a few estimates from the big companies and one from Cost Plus. Steve was the only one who actually opened my heating system to look inside and his quote included servicing the unit and cutting vents into the closet, which was badly needed, but no other company even mentioned. Good product. Decent prices. Good installation. BAD customer service. As far as customer service goes, Steve's skills aren't the best. In person, when we got our intial estimate and installation, he was friendly enough....a little gruff, but a straight shooter, which I appreciate. His follow up communication skills have been very poor. When we hit a snag with the permitting process, I received a very crass, unprofessional email from him that had all the phonic construction of someone yelling into their mobile device, expecting SIRI to turn his trainwreck of wordsmithing into an angsty haiku. I'm no dummy, most mistakes involve both parties, so I wrote him back and tried to explain my half of the mistake was honest and non-intended (much of the blame was in fact, our electrician) and that I would do what I could to fix it. I also asked him to be more professional, in which I received another really blunt, (yet slightly more restrained?) email that was so confusing and grammatically screwy, it sounded as though someone was trying to voice text me while having a stroke. You could write this off as a single incident, or that we are "needy" customers (which we aren't), but our communication with Steve after the estimate and installation have been very similar...this incident only aggravated it. Don't know if the dude needs a vacation or just a giant nap, but Steve only gets 2 stars from us based on unprofessional customer service..... read more

As new home owners in a pandemic it was difficult to navigate getting good help that was also affordable. After our furnace broke in November we tried to go through our home warranty and were matched with one of their contractors who did absolutely nothing for us, we waited for 10 weeks with no heat in 40 degree weather. Out of desperation we decided on an alternate route and we found Steve. Within 2 days he had a quote and timeline for us. He was honest, friendly and straight forward and even got us upgraded to a mini split without breaking the bank. His team got the job done in half the day and were super respectful, even showed us in-depth how to use the unit before leaving out house cleaner than when they arrived. We had two other repairmen come look at our air conditioner and both tried to tell us that it needed to be replaced. Steve had it up and running within 20 minutes. It was honestly a pretty difficult to get him booked, I assume because he is one of the only skilled heating and air experts in left in Portland, but once we did get him in to work on our air conditioner and furnace problems, it was well worth the wait. On top of fixing our air conditioner, we ended up having him install a new furnace and he and his crew were timely and neat. I also felt like the price was reasonable for all of the labor completed. My advice is not to waste time and money on other companies that just want to bill for coming out to your home and or hit you with huge bills for installs, just call Steve from Cost Plus. read more

I couldn't be more happy with Steve's service. Not only did he diagnose the problem with my heater, that I needed a new hose and that a pressure switch was faulty but that my board was fried as well. It was an old board that isn't made any more. I was thinking about how much I would have to pay on eBay to find a new one. He said "don't worry I bet I have one in my shop". He dropped it off an hour later and the furnace fired right up. He was so kind and explained to me how everything worked. Can't say enough nice things. read more

Fine install but kinda ghosted me on followup, answered the phone 2-3 times "I'm on a job but I'll call you back tonight." Never did. At one point he said Oh we need to get your permit you know, and I was like I think you're confusing me with someone else? We did get the permit. Very strange. We finally went with a different company for tune-ups. This was over the course of one year drifting into the next with the same experience and we wanted to do maintenance and keep, you know, costs down. I see others on here with concerns like gas smells and he wouldn't return voicemail. Like I said, no complaints on the install - reasonable, made all the right recommendations and adjustments. I was referred by a friend who had Steve install their AC a few years ago, and raved about him. Steve came by two days after I called to get a quote for adding AC to my furnace. He is was up front and not pushy. After a few quotes, I went with Cost Plus. He and his son, Mark, came the next week and installed the AC, fixed my vents that were old and damaged, replaced my 1997 water heater, and told me everything along the way that they were doing. They went ABOVE and BEYOND and had to spend a good time in a creepy crawl space under my house. I am not house savvy at all but I felt they were honest, straight forward, efficient, tidy, and cat friendly. I really wanted to do business with Cost Plus! The serviceman that came out to my house was very nice. I was requesting an estimate to add an AC unit to my FAG furnace. He said he would get back to me in a day or so. I wasn't in a big rush so I waited two weeks. Then I called the main office, the receptionist said she would notify him to call me. The next day I got no call. I then called the salesman's cell phone and he asked me to send him an e-mail so he could attach the estimate to it for return. Never got the estimate! They just lost out on a $5,000.00 deal! Let the customer be aware. read more

We called to get our system serviced and was told that they were 3 weeks out, no problem at all. After no contact for over 5 weeks we called again just to make sure that we were on their radar. Still no response after two weeks. We will give our business and money to someone else. read more

Had an A/C installed this week. The process started with a quick consultation with Steve. He quoted me a great price and was thorough and knowledgeable. A week or so later came the install. It took about 6 hours in total. The installers were very friendly and helpful. They even cleaned my fireplace glass and changed my filter for no charge. When the install was complete, they walked me through the entire system and gave me advice on how to best run it. I'd highly recommend them for an A/C stall. read more

Cost Plus Heating and Air Pros: Thorough, honest, cost effective, considerate Cons: Booked at least 3-4 weeks out, be aware that you may have to wait for some services because they are a small, busy team I scheduled a bid with Cost Plus Heating and Air at the end of April 2018. We knew we'd be replacing our furnace and had been saving up to add a central air conditioner as well. We also wanted to add ductwork to the sun room that had not been tied into the ventilation system. Cost Plus fit us in their schedule as soon as possible to do the bid. Steve was thorough and made sure we had all our questions and concerns discussed and answered. He recommended products and services that would best suit our needs, and not ones that were unnecessary even if he would have made more money off of them. The price he quoted us was very reasonable and fit in well with our budget and the products he recommended were perfect for our needs. We also got a great quote for a new water heater that we were worried was going to fail any day. The work started about three weeks later and took about two and a half days back to back. The 3-man team was prompt and considerate, they took care to make sure things that I'd forgotten to move were safe and out of the way. They put drop-cloths down when they needed access to the interior of the house and thoroughly cleaned up after themselves along the way and especially at the end of the day. The work was done well and we've been enjoying our new water heater, furnace, A/C, and added ventilation. We will continue to use Cost Plus Heating & Air for any future HVAC needs. read more

Great at taking your money...did a great job invoicing and ensuring I would get my tax credits. However, now that the sale is done the service is horrible. 6+ phone calls about a gas odor in the basement (around the furnace). Nothing done yet. I called four different companies and decided on Steve with Cost Plus for two distinct reasons 1. Due to my work schedule, he was willing to come give me a bid on a Sunday while with the others I had to take time off to meet with them. Having experience with Contractors-it really says something when they are willing to work on a sunday 2. He was the most reasonably priced out of the four bids I got and even decreased his bid when I changed my mind from putting the furnace in the basement to installing in my attic. Two others did not. Once the work started-he noticed venting from my stove to the attic that was not completed. He completed it for me. I am very happy with my choice and Steves team and communication with me was perfect. I could come home from work everyday to a clean house, see the progress (only took 3.5 days) and NO PROBLEMS. The night before a home inspection in a house we're selling, we found water leaking from the furnace. These guys answered the phone right away and came the following morning. They ordered the part, and when it came 2 days later they were promptly back and repaired and serviced the furnace, and wrote a note for the buyer verifying it was up to code. Charged a fair price right off the bat even though, as a woman, I'm always worried people will try to over charge me. Left behind the cracked replaced part as verification of the fix. I highly recommend Cost Plus. My mom needed to replace her old oil furnace. Steve responded in one day with a reasonable quote. My mom was using electric heaters to keep warm until she could get a new furnace. Steve expedited the service with the gas company. He and his crew arrived on time, installed the new furnace, hauled away the old one and my mom had a working furnace within a week. He explained everything through the process, and always responded quickly with answers to questions. He set up the new thermostat for her and was very helpful. He has even found someone to pump out the oil in her tank (she had just filled it when her furnace died) for free that gives it to those in need. I responded to an advertisement from NW Natural offering discounts if I switched to a gas furnace. Steve with Cost Plus Heating was the contractor that arrived to do the estimate. He did a thorough estimate and spent time with me explaining the tax credits and different furnace varieties. He did not try to hard sell me. This was back in 2012, and I decided not to get a furnace at that time since I still had a lot of oil in my oil furnace tank. Fast forward 2 years to 2014, I finally ran out of oil. I called up Steve on a Sunday afternoon to ask if he could update the estimate. He was over in 15 minutes, updated the original estimates and even honored some of the outdated prices. He prioritized us and had his crew out the next morning (Martin Luther King Day) at 8AM. His crew was hard-working and polite, took care to not damage our floors or possessions. Work was completed Tuesday, then he had the inspection completed Wednesday and we had heat Wednesday night. We were only out of heat for 3 days even though we were expecting 7-9 days. He also put in a gas water heater for us. Steve was flexible, even coming to our home at 6PM to go over paperwork and show us how to use the furnace. The price was reasonable. Working with Steve and Cost Plus was a pleasure and we would recommend them to anyone. He seemed to take a personal interest in our well-being-- getting our heat on as fast as possible and taking measures to make sure we understood the machine we had installed, and to make sure we receive all available tax credits.
