BEWARE!! First Call Heating & Cooling in OC. Predatory practices. I had them out on 4/3 to do a tune up of my furnace and AC and the tech said I had a cracked heat exchanger and he might need to red tag it and shut it down. He ran a diagnostic and there was no CO amount but insisted the system was too old (13 yrs) and had to be replaced for $$$$$. Said no thanks and had Ben's Heating & Cooling out on 4/10 and it was totally fine (Ben's is great, BTW). First Call should be run out of town on a rail. I've filed a complaint with the State DOJ and apparently I'm not the only one. Makes me super angry that they are probably preying on seniors and disabled that may fall for their BS. Im not pleased. I've been a customer of First Call for many years. I have been on a monthly payment schedule for oil. My oil ran out the hight before last, they came out today to fill the empty tank. Now I still have no heat. It seems it needs to be primed, yet the tech said he doesn't know how to do this and the oil company that delivers my oil is not affiliated with First Call. So for everyone that's interested everything that they say in their ad they do completely the opposite. They overcharged for parts and prices. They always try to upsell you. They always tell you that your system needs to be replaced. After three service calls miraculously your furnace gets fixed at three times the price of anybody else. After they've already told you that it couldn't be fixed. Then they want to charge you three times the amount that anybody else wants to charge you to install a new furnace. My recommendation Call around do not use First Call. By the way, I've been a First Call customer for over 50 years I won't do business with him again and I don't recommend that you do. A little background my grandfather worked for McCalls First Call. Granted I do know that my furnace is old but it is an oil burning furnace that has replaceable parts. Every time I seem to have it serviced they tell me I need to upgrade and get a new one. Well in today's day and age I researched it and low and behold it's my same exact furnace from 50 years ago same styling same everything same parts. That has to make you think. I was nervous to have someone professionally service my 50 year-old oil furnace as I was thinking they might just walk in and basically say you need to buy a new furnace rather than actually service mine (and charge me an expensive house call fee). When I called and made the appointment, I did share my concerns and asked if they would be able to send someone who is familiar and comfortable working on really old furnaces and they said they could do that ( they said Kerry is your guy!). My old Trane furnace developed a crack in the heat exchanger and failed during the coldest part of the winter. First Call responded quickly and diagnosed and showed me the problem, which was serious. We called in their HVAC consultant who turned out to be the same person who sold us our last system. He was very experienced, understood exactly what we had installed before (a complex system) and was willing to discuss all options in an effort to find what would work best for us. We opted to replace the furnace and AC, and the price met our expectations. First Call then sent two senior technicians out a few days later on the coldest day of the year and they got the new furnace up and running in a few hours. The following Monday they completed the installation of the AC. Top notch work. Professional, enthusiastic, and polite crew. The new system is quieter and more efficient than what we had before. We had a complicated job where we had two heating and cooling systems in our home that we needed to replace, and we wanted to with a single system. Someone from First Call came out to see the old systems and told us it couldn't be done and gave us a quote with very expensive options to replace the two systems separately. We got a 2nd opinion elsewhere and not only were they able to replace the systems with a single system, the results are excellent. For those reasons I wouldn't recommend First Call. They told us something couldn't be done when it actually could, and we were able to save a significant amount of money by going elsewhere. read more

we had a $8000 dollar unit installed last year in july (the install team wasn't able to attend to us for a month or two). the unit blew hot air the next day. they came back and took 8 hours to say it was a bad wire. the house only gets to 76 on a 88 degree day. worse on hotter days of which there has been 25 days reaching 90 degrees. They have been back now 8 times. my dog can't be alone with a tech so either my husband or I have had to take off work. Now they say we need new ducting. That will be bery expensive. I recommen, if you go with these guys, make sure the ducting you have will be sufficient to run the machine you purchase from them. read more

We got several quotes when we needed a new furnace. This company came in a little lower and we appreciate they didn't try to upsell us with a fancier unit with features we wouldn't use. We basically turn the furnace off for at least six months of the year and manually adjust it when it's on. This new furnace has been great, keeping us much warmer than the old unit. read more

To respond to the response of my review from Brad, I lived in Oregon for 8 years and my mother and I owned the house I lived in where the despute happened. This incident occured in 2006 but the despute was later because the rain in fall caused the short to the garage and they did the work in the early spring so during the warm months it was still working. I also didn't know the short was from the damage until after having an electrician come out and inspect it, which was a costly thing for me to do at the time so I wasn't able to do it right away. I don't live there anymore which is why I have reviewed in other places (not that that's even important). The reason why I even took the time to post a review to begin with "years later" is because of the completely unprofessional service I received and to hopefully prevent somebody else from having the same thing happen to them. Most of the letters I have are physical but I found this one my mother wrote them in 2008. Okay, he said the part is $160.38 I paid. When he left I took a picture of new part. I looked online and found same exact part new for $4.16, $7.88 on Amazon and $7.54 on eBay. So here we are, having decided to replace our 14 year old oil-fired Olsen with a Trane gas furnace. It was a hard decision given that the oil furnace was still functional. However, being tired of random and significant fuel bills along with what had become expected winter events ranging from running out of oil to hardware failures all resulting in cold days in our house, the decision was made. We scheduled the job and in less than a day, it was done and picture perfect. The crew consisted of two techs, with a third coming in to pipe in the gas line. Since it's new I can't speak to it's reliability, but I can tell you it's super quiet. We also replaced the electronic air cleaner and it is much easier to clean. As well, we upgraded the legacy Ecobee Smart thermostat with the Ecobee 4. It's a big improvement - is HomeKit compliant, much easier to program and manage, and looks great. I am told that Yelp hides reviews in which names are listed so I am not going to mention names here which is too bad because they did a great job by all accounts. Five stars for great customer service, installation, and an overall stress-free experience. I highly recommended First Call before this job and I still do. read more

Such a relief! A couple of days ago, our air conditioning went out. No air at all out of the vents. Panic! Because in a few days, it's predicted to be 100 degrees. Our technician was Scott, and he's terrific. I liked the way he talked us through the troubleshooting process, explaining everything along the way. Our problem, it turns out, was in our furnace, specifically the capacitor. Scott explained why, and he double-checked several other things. Bingo! We have cold air again. The other thing that I liked is that he talked to us about the furnace itself, and I feel so much better-educated about it than before. For me, when something goes wrong in my house, I panic because it makes you feel a bit helpless. A 92 year old friend needed heat pump service recently. He was charged $278 for a 120/240-24v transformer that sells for $39 on Amazon (markup 700%!). The heat pump has been running fine for 7 years with a simple 1H/1C thermostat (retails at approx. $35), but First Call decided he needed a $250 Honeywell FocusPro 5000 thermostat. First Call gave a 5% senior discount of $33.35 - whoopee! Somebody got ripped off, and it wasn't First Call Heating & Cooling! read more

Had a leak in a clogged AC pump pipe. The serviceman came out, looked in the furnace and saw an old humidifier plate on the floor of the furnace that he said had asbestos. Said he could do no work on the furnace, it would have to be replaced. Nothing about just having the fallen plate removed or testing it for asbestos. Fortunately, I had a friend who is in the furnace repair business give me a second opinion. When you don't know much about furnaces, you sometimes get spooked by service people's opinions when common sense says the problem isn't that big. Just take the possibly dangerous piece out. Which I will do with a grabber and dispose of it as though it did have asbestos. The furnace is old, but still working good. The heat pump is old, but still working good. The only problem was in the AC pump piping having a clog. I would suggest anyone getting service from them that supposedly requires new installation get a second opinion. read more

We have had a maintenance contract with them for 5 years now. The technician who came out the last 2 years is fine, but the administrative staff are AWFUL. They have not scheduled service in a timely manner, we had to nag them. They sent out 3 invoices for the same thing - one after another - clearly unfamiliar with their contracts with their customers. Then when we advised them to review our contract - terms are payment due withing 30 days -- they just ignored it. They called me advising payment was past due, it was not even close to 30 days after service; and they claim to have not received any communications from us. The office staff has offended and alienated us as customers. We'll be taking our business elsewhere - this is not worth the hassle. read more

We've been using First Call for years. They sort of came with our house when we bought it, and we kept them on as our oil tank filler of choice. They did a good job of inspecting our furnace when we moved in, and showed us the ins and outs of owning a 1950's model oil furnace. The only time we had to call them for oil was when we ran out of oil on New Year's Day after some fairly heavy usage, and they showed up the next day to fill the tank. In fact, every time we called them for anything, they showed up pretty damn quickly. When it came time to scrap the oil and get gassed up, we received bids from numerous installers/contractors, and while First Call quoted us the most, we decided to go with them because they were offering us the most complete service. Our install (while always a noisy, intrusive job) was done in a very efficient manner. They had a different team for each aspect - removal, electrical, plumbing (for the condensate) and gas. So instead of two dudes trying to do all things, there was a small army of dudes in our basement working away. While we totally miss our old oil heat (it's SO much warmer), we're very happy with the job that First Call did. From quote all the way through execution, it was smooth, on schedule and as-advertised. Some of the other services we received bids from didn't show up when scheduled, were slow to respond, etc. Typical contractor BS. So when faced even with a more expensive price, we opted to pay for the reliability and quality. They even worked with us a little bit on the price to come towards some of the other offers. Overall I'm happy with First Call's service on the oil delivery side and the gas install side. City inspector took about two seconds to check the install and all work and pronounced it a fine job. Technician was knowledgeable and friendly but company's policies are sketchy. Charging for "repairs" that are highly questionable. I scheduled a visit to diagnose the furnace/heat pump not working. Was quoted a price for diagnosis. Technician came out, did a diagnostic and was great. The problem was a clogged filter which I cleaned. I fixed the problem and it started working. The technician told me that if the unit begins working again, it's company policy to charge for a repair. Why? For the company to make more money off each call. If the owner fixes the unit, they won't be needed back for a repair, so they need to come up with a reason to charge for a repair. In this case, the technician said he touched a piece during diagnosis that needs to be touched to reset it. Ok. Was it part of a diagnosis? Yes. Did you mention anything ahead of time? No. So why is this diagnosis now a repair? Because they have to charge for something. read more

Just had a furnace installation to replace our 70+ year old oil furnace. We had a gas furnace even though we really wanted an electric heat pump (we were told that the cost of adjusting our electrical to conform to requirements for an electric heat pump would be quite high). we had several bids and First call was very fair and lower than the others. First call did a great job from top to bottom. They took care of everything, and the communication was outstanding all the way through. The work was good and the installation team cleaned everything up nicely. Zero complaints here. The furnace is a Trane unit, so we will see how that turns out over the years. read more

First Call came recommended to me by a friend of mine that had used them for years. She was right. They rock. Steve Erickson came out to do a walk-thru on a new furnace. He was honest, open and explained everything thoroughly. I'd gotten 4 other quotes for brands like Carrier, Lennox, Bryant, etc. First Call quoted a Trane, which is #1 according to the leading consumer reporting agencies. I was concerned that the Trane would be more expensive than the others, but it was comparably priced. A week later, First Call installers were in my home installing my new furnace. Did I mention that it's a Trane? My installers were Abel and Aaron. They were incredibly nice, but more importantly, very professional and very knowledgeable. Steve even stopped by to see how the installation was going and to answer any questions I had. Before any work was done, Abel and Aaron put down carpet protectors and tarps - everywhere. When the job was done, they did an excellent clean up job too! Here's the bottom line - when you want only the best for your home in terms of HVAC, and a company chock full of friendly, helpful people, call First Call Heating and Cooling. Period. Abel and Chester from First Call are back today to check on things and install a damper for me (it's a 3-story house - I needed a damper to keep the 3rd floor from getting like a sauna. Did I mention that I got a Trane? Love it.) Simple stuff, but guess what - they still took the time to put down carpet protectors and tarps. This company has failed to meet my expectations repeatedly. The Wi-Fi thermostat was never installed correctly and I got terrible support getting it rectified. The thermostat recently quit displaying anything. I called to get someone to help me, and they wanted to charge me multiple hundreds of dollars to just diagnose it. Woke up to a non-functioning furnace. Called First Call as soon as they opened. Got an all day window for a tech to show up. Tech showed up, determined the "controller" was dead. I was told he would see what part is available and get me a quote either by the end of the day, or first thing the next morning at the latest. Three days later I had heard nothing from First Call. So I called them, explained the situation and was told that someone would call me. It's now a week after that call and still no one has contacted me.
