I made reservations online through Open Table. Reservations were made for a Friday night for 4 guests . This restaurant is super cute. Lights are dim, they have a full bar, cute decor and live DJ. The servers are quick . You have to order your appetizer and entree at the same time. The food was amazing! Authentic PR flavor! Appetizers had a little bit of everything (Empanadas, wings, alcapurria balls, chicken tenders, calamari, guac and nachos). Appetizer platter was enough for 4-6 ppl. Everyone loved their entrees (pics attached) Drinks were ok nothing to brag about EXCEPT The Lychee Martinez which has coconut flavor mixed in ! Delicious!!! Only negative review is for the flan which was way too sweet. The music is a bit too loud so you have to raise your voice to have a conversation but the DJ was great. Didn't have a reservation but we were seated a high-top table on a Saturday evening for dinner towards the front of the restaurant. We got the cheese nachos; the Cubano sandwich; steak, al pastor, and chicken tacos all to split between my boyfriend and I. The service was very unattentive to begin with, not sure if they didn't realize we were seated there by the hostess. I liked the nachos and Cubano sandwich. The Cubano is such a large sandwich - definitely good to split with another person. The steak and al pastor tacos were good; chicken taco was a bit dry. I also thought my Stella beer was a little flat. Overall, I wish the service was better. Food/drinks were decently priced, however and it was good food. I'm going to start by saying that as far as I can remember, I've never given a 5 star rating! This is because 5 stars should be perfection, which is nearly impossible to attain. This being said, I can say that Counter & Bodega achieves another level by reminding me of the flavors of my grandmother and her generation when they did everything the labor intensive way, and took no shortcuts to let the flavors develop (which is how I learned to make Puerto Rican food. This was such the case that i even said that someone's grandmother was in the kitchen cooking I choose this restaurant because I had heard some great things, and I was meeting up with some friends who were visiting from Spain, and had never had Puerto Rican food, so I wanted them to experience a little of my culture since they had shown me theirs while I was in Spain & Portugal. C&B was an excellent choice in this regard as it is authentic, and just excellent all around. Details like having all Don Q rums, to Medalla beer, along with the decor and atmosphere made me feel like I was at La Placita! First of all the drinks were all amazing, from the standard Mojitos, to the craft cocktails were on another level. Next, we had alcapurrias and piononos as appetizers. The alcapurrias were as good as the ones in Piñones! Truly reminiscent of how my grandmother would make them! For entrees, we had Pernil (roasted pork shoulder, served with arroz con gandules, tostones, and cuerito/chicharrón), chuletas (pork chops, served with arroz con gandules and maduros), and then there was Mofongo (mashed green plantains), one with pernil and one with churrasco (skirt steak). The pernil tasted as if my grandmother marinated it! The pork chops were perfectly marinated, and the churrasco was perfectly seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The arroz con gandules was the best one I've ever had at a restaurant. And the best detail of all was the garlic sauce served with the Mofongo. You could tell that it was made from scratch, with skill! All in all, this was an excellent experience with excellent food, shared with friends who were looking to have a great meal, and I was hoping that this was as good as what I've heard. Not only did Counter & Bodega deliver, but has me feeling nostalgic, and proud that my friends had such a great representation of Puerto Rican culture and food. Our server took our orders and gladly accommodated a to-go order at the same time for a colleague who couldn't make it to dinner. Cute concept, but not a go to again. Was in the city and wanted some Spanish food and was in the area so we decided to give them a try. Frist the name is perfect because they offer many dishes that are street foods you can find in your local bodega. The place is super cute and offers a scenery in the back for cute Instagram worthy pictures, but the food and service were a big missed for me. We were seated and not even exaggerating but it took over an hour to get our drinks. I had to ask twice if our drinks were coming and finally it dawn on the waitress that she never put in the order. To create the perfect picture, no it wasn't busy. There were only two other tables with people. For apps 3 things we wanted were out of stock. We ended up just getting the chimi sliders and mini arepas. The chimi was made with chicken that was super dry. The sauce and the fried Dominican cheese made it edible. The arepas were good and honesty probably the best thing of the night. For the entrée we ordered the mofongo with steak, the salmon dish, burger, shrimp ceviche, and chofan. The mofongo and salmon were okay. The ceviche was not good at all. Some shrimps were super hard and felt overcooked and some were super raw and haven't been cooked on the citrus. It felt like they mixed leftover shrimp to make the dish. I do not mind paying for good food, but $27 dollars for 6 small raw and overcooked shrimp was not worth it. Didn't even eat it with fear of food poisonings. This dish comes with two cheese stuff potato logs. They were very bland. The chofan was super salty. Salty enough I ended up throwing it out. The concept again is very cute, but the food was a whole miss for me and the waitress was really horrible. Everything took forever to come out. The staff, from front door to bar staff and waiters, were all pleasant and service-oriented. This app came with three open-faced mini arepas, and we chose the shredded beef topping. The arepa itself was perfectly fried and had such an alluringly sweet flavor. The shredded beef was super savory, loved it. Mind you that this was a takeout order, and was still absolutely delicious by the time it reached our home. Came here for my boyfriend bday and The food was 10/10, I love some ceviche where you can taste the lime and this is it, what makes it better is the mango that balances it all out. I got a passion fruit margarita slushy and by the second one I was feeling nice, it had great flavor. For my entree I got the mofongo with shrimp, and my bf got the salmon with arroz con gandules. Great local restaurant to get Latin American food. Their specialty is Puerto Rican food but they offer food from other countries in LatAm. A good place to bring a date or come with friends. A bit pricey but they do offer lunch and brunch prices. Either way, you'll walk away very full. I almost had to tap out but managed to finish my meal. Speaking of, while not the best mofongo I've had, it's very delicious. If you told me it were your favorite I wouldn't argue against it. The pernil was delicious but I wish they added a piece of the crispy skin to top it off. My biggest knock against it was the gravy which unfortunately is needed to moisten and flavor the mofongo. I liked & also didn't like this place. Went on a whim with family. Didn't like how the water was served in plastic cups. It took an extremely long time for the food to come out. When it did, my veggie dish had a chuck of chicken in it. I understand that mistakes happen, but as someone who doesn't eat meat, it was really alarming to bite into meat. They made me look through the enchilada with a flashlight as if I was lying about the chicken but I had just spit it into my napkin. They made me a new one and it was good but the rest of my family was just about done eating by the time it came out. They discounted my dish a little bit for the chicken snafu. When I did have the correct food, it was really good, and I know my family enjoyed their food too. Staff was nice enough although I really didn't like the flashlight thing. Decor was cute. I've been twice so that's how much I like Counter & Bodega. Years ago you could find plenty hole in the wall spots to eat Puerto Rican food but it was mainly in the boros. This location is smack dab in the middle of Chelsea right next to the 1 train 23rd street stop so it's super convenient. Now for the food! I'm absolutely OBSESSED with their Chuletas (Pork Chops) they are huge, flavorful and lick the bone good. The first time I came I had the pasteles (empanadas) and I took 2 with me to eat during the concert. All in all Counter & Bodega is a good place to go to pre-game and you need a full belly. As for reviewers who have been living under a rock. MOST restaurants are still under-staffed! Why are you dinging them for something they cannot help? Judge them on their food. It's been hard to find good mofongo around NYC that compared when I first tried at PR years ago. My friend tried the pork but was dry. One of my favorite restaurants in Chelsea, honestly everything is amazing here. I love there drinks, my go to are the henny colada or the lychee Martin . If you ask me what I think about puerto rican or latin cuisine as whole I'm going to tell you it's just ok (grew up in miami eating cuban food) after jus two dishes at this place I have seen the light. They are a corn arepa on the bottom but it has I think some sweet platain in it as it's slightly sweet, then there is some fried crispy cheese some tomatoes and a cream based sauce. These things are amazing. really get them I can't believe there are better apps around. We did order the shrimp ceviche but they were out maybe next text time. The wife got a salad which was very well done with fresh tomatoes and greens and good vinaigrette. For an entre we had the churrasco steak with arroz con gandules and tostones. For the last 5 years I spent a week every month in San Juan for work and ate at all their best restaurants. The arroz con gandules is the best I have had. The churasco was first of all a very nice cut and perfectly cooked, I prefer the tostones very crispy and these were not super crispy but tasted great. A fantastic dish overall.
