It has been 7 years since we last ate here. We really enjoyed that visit. We decided to have lunch at The Country House when we were traveling through Geneva the other day. I was disappointed by several things. Some were important things other things were not very important. First impressions - the exterior of the "house" was in disrepair because the paint or wood stain was peeled away in 2 spots. There was no identification on the front door. Restaurants will usually have some type of signage at the front door. Maybe a few fresh flower planters to brighten up the entry way. The deck was not in use due to high winds. Our server was very nice. Both she and the manager asked us several times if everything was ok. It really wasn't but we did not have time to wait for hot fries to be made and for an as requested medium cooked hamburger to be made. Since I did not speak up that was on me so I didn't dock any stars for that. There were so many reviews mentioning their juicy hamburgers. The well done one I was served was not juicy. read more

We frequented this place many times, but we moved out of area and haven't been in about 3 years. We went for lunch on Sunday and it was very disappointing. The food just wasn't there same (pastrami on a pretzel roll used to be amazing) and the bar area, where we always ate was unkempt. The peanuts and popcorn were stale and the bartender didn't want to be there. It was just sad. We won't be back, but we have friends in the area that feel the same. Hope the best for them. read more

Had an amazing burger called The Top Drawer, Yes it really may have been the best burger I've ever had, it was cooked perfectly to my liking medium rare and tasted very fresh and juicy. Also enjoyed a very cold Blue Moon beer with free peanuts & popcorn while we waited a short while for our food. Country house has been a family stable of ours for years! Their food is delicous and their warm welcoming environment always makes this place the perfect choice. A fun thing they do is put bowls of peanuts around the tables / bar and you throw the shells on the ground. Great place, great food, great people! read more

This long-standing restaurant was one I had never been to; my boyfriend said he drove past it daily for years but never went in either! A coupon finally inspired us to check it out, haha. We were originally going to be seated in a room FULL of small children, but I asked if we could sit elsewhere and we were moved to what seemed to be a room full of older seemingly regulars to the restaurant, definitely more our speed. A "place out in the burbs" with the vibe of a Chicago corner Tavern. As you approach the comfortable-looking building, the aroma of Charcoal Broiling is a harbinger of culinary joy. The reputation here is for Burgers, and rightly so. Great Juicy Char-Broiled Beef, and you can have it on various types of buns/bread, with many choices of toppings. I always swing with the "Top Shelf" patty (medium rare) on Toasted Dark Rye, with a big slice of raw onion. NO CHEESE! There are Burger specials every day, but my taste is beef/bread/onion and salt. I can't comment on the burger specials-I find piling on stuff robs the beef of its yummy char-broiled goodness. At chain burger joints, the beef customarily has little taste, so one needs to augment. Not here. In the event you ARE an aficionado of "loaded" burgers, I would suspect the high quality found throughout the menu assures such a beast will be worth your order. The Burger is great, but there are a bunch of other things on the menu worth considering. First and foremost are the soups. Whoever is in the kitchen knows what to do with a kettle. The soups here are worthy of a "Seinfeld" episode, and you won't need to go through any chicanery to order! (IYKYK). I've had any number of bowls here and they have all been top-notch. The French Onion is always on the menu and there are always 2 "daily" choices. Every time I come here, I'm tempted to just order multiple bowls of soup and be done with it, but the Burgers (and select other entrees) are too good to pass up. When I'm not in the burger frame-of-mind (and yes, that happens) I usually head for the "Pretzel Crusted Walleye". Sometimes you want something "crunchy". This is the same urge satiated by potato chips/fritos/nachos and all other manner of mostly unhealthy crap, deep-fried in some sort of industrial grease. Here, the Walleye is gloriously crunchy, with a fresh-fried-in-clean-oil flavor. The batter is tasty, but does not get in the way of the clean fish taste. The "pretzel" thing compliments in a unique way. A fine tartar accompanies, and is good on every few bites-the plain dish is THAT good. It's a nice big serving, too. There's a thing called "Duck Tenders" in the appetizer menu. Strips of Duck deep-fried into another crunchy masterpiece. These are not like "chicken fingers"-closer to clam strips, if you've ever had them (not in flavor, but in size and scope). A basket of these and a bowl of soup (or two) is an epic feed! They aren't cheap-but worth it! Available on the side are great steak fries and onion rings. There's an option to get these "Half & Half" with your burger or entree. The bar is on point, with a good selection of crafts on tap, and more in the bottles/cans. I've had a super Old Fashioned any number of times. I also advise to take a second and read the menu throughly-They source a LOT of stuff from local purveyors, which demonstrates good practice. The kitchen is ahead of the game before the ranges are lit. Service is cordial but pro. The "throw" of the soft drinks is good, and the Iced Tea is excellent. Prices are quite quite reasonable. If there is any gripe, it's in the somewhat close quarters of the tables. If you get a noisy group, (or especially one where idiot parents think the antics of their children are charming and should be shared by all) it could be annoying. If you can score one of the few booths, it's a good choice; or grab a high-top in the bar. The possibility of annoyance keeps this at 4 stars, but the food is a solid 5, but don't let that stop you from patronizing this excellent and long-time classic. read more

Do not spend $19.95 on the chef steak sandwich the bread is supposed to be garlic and they just bless it with a wand. Nothing ok. I had lunch here with a group of friends. I didn't want to make a point of taking photos in this situation, so sorry, there are no photos. My rating would be exactly what the restaurant currently sits at - 3 1/2 stars, but I couldn't justify rounding up, because the food was average at best. The good news is that the service was excellent. I know other reviewers have had some issues with that, but luckily we were very well taken care of, and we tipped generously in appreciation. I went with the "Top Drawer Burger on a sesame seed bun. It was slightly undercooked - more of a medium rare than medium I asked for, but still edible. My side was the combination onion rings and fries. I was very disappointed in the onion rings, the fries were average. No complaints from anyone at the table, but the vibe was underwhelmed. Stopped in for lunch later in the day during the week when out this way. The husband is a fan of the burgers, but I'm not a burger person, so I went with pasta and the kids got the standard burger and mac and cheese options. While service was friendly, the kitchen was super slow. Like, there was a good 20 minutes between order and food and this is basic stuff. There were two tables in our room with people and a handful of others in the bar, so i don't know what the deal was. The shrimp pasta was okay - small portion, but only $16. Would be nice to bump it to $20 and offer soup/salad with it. Kids liked their meals, so that's a win. read more

From the outside it's beautiful, the inside is cozy. Our waitress was nice and friendly. I was very disappointed in our dinner though. I ordered the European pretzel crusted cod dinner. The fish was really good, but the sides like a lot to be desired. The German potato salad was extremely bland and soupy, it's not made from scratch either. The coleslaw is awful and it tasted like cheap Mayo, and way too much of it, with no seasoning. I love German potato salad and coleslaw. My mother ordered the Ribeye and it had wonderful flavor but it was about 1/4 " thick. It reminded me of what you would eat on a sandwich and not a ribeye dinner. The feel of this place is that they buy already made food and heat it up. Very disappointed. I won't be trying it again. The kitchen needs to make itself as wonderful as the outside. read more

I stopped here for a quick lunch before I needed to start getting ready for a wedding. I was staying at the hotel nextdoor so it was very convenient. The service was lackluster but the food was surprisingly decent. Huge menu with all sorts of home cooked meal options. I went with the pulled pork sliders and fries. Truly good people work here! Probably why the service is good and the people are great! If you haven't been to a Country House expect a lot of meat choices. This location delivered! I ordered a Clam Chowder and it was one of the best I've ever had. The main course offered a Patty Melt cooked to medium rare perfection and some fries. I will be back for more meat on top of meat. There is a lot to choose from and a lot more for me to consume. If you haven't been to one of these you should stop. Country House is an interesting place... from the outside it looks like a wonderful spot to have a meal: it's huge, there's always a lot of cars in the parking lot, and the name itself is just inviting. But they offer lackluster food and service that really disappointed me. We had dinner on a Saturday night and the dining rooms were busy but not crowded. Our waitress was nice but not very attentive, greeting us but taking an inordinate amount of time to return and take our orders (drinks, food). The food itself also took a while to arrive and was just warm, not hot, when it did. The menu was enticing but the the food failed to deliver on flavor. The portions were plentiful but when it isn't tasty it doesn't matter. I'm not saying I wouldn't return to give them another shot but I was pretty disappointed with our meal here. read more

TLDR: What a special place to eat, drink, meet up with friends or catch a game on the TVs in the bar. ____________________ When we arrived, the hostess met us with a warm greeting at the door and promptly showed us to our table in the lounge. The bartender, Kristen, was our waitress. She was very helpful making menu selections. Kristen was so speedy, taking care of all of the tables and the bar (superwoman). Shift Manager, Dave, stopped by our table and welcomed us to the restaurant. He is a really nice guy and made us feel right at home. Now for the food... We ordered a bison burger and an Elk burger. This was a half pound of an extra lean burger. We had the burgers with a side of steamed vegetables and a baked potato. Both burgers were really tasty (we could not tell the difference between the two). The price for the two burgers and one adult beverage was $50.00 including tax and tip. Since we were only visiting Geneva, I am not sure when we will be back, I am sure we will get there again someday. read more

It's hard to get to get excited about the food when the place is deep cleaning dirty and has huge chunks of peeling paint greeting you on the exterior of the building. To be honest it was average. The advertised Top Drawer Burger "the best burger you've ever tasted" was good, just OK like any other burger. The tenderloin sliders were just OK, overcooked and lacked flavor. Service was good but again it was what was expected. It did like the country feel which goes with the name itself. But would I return, which to me is the bottomline question, for me, that would be unlikely. read more

Still a great place - I'm so thankful they were open most of covid. We have only ever sat in the bar area. Yummy peanuts are provided on all tables. Went there last night to enjoy a nice dinner with my family, the duck tenders are always delicious! However I ordered the new jambalaya special..do not order this it had to been microwaved to be reheated because it was hot in the middle but cool around the edges, tasted awful way too much green peppers so it took all the other flavors of this dish away. The sausage was very chewy and so was the over cooked shrimp in it. The beans they served on the side were old and cold. Won't be back for awhile until they improve on customer service and because I told the waitress and she was just like aww I'm sorry. Well she wasn't the one who walked out of there still hungry because I wasn't eating microwaved crappy jambalaya or cold beans. read more

The food was really good and service prompt but the whole experience was soured by the poor attitude by staff. Our kids are generally very well behaved in restaurants but we felt immediately judged that we had kids with us from the start. We weren't even seated yet and heard comments made by the waitress about us. Also through the whole dinner could hear staff complaining about this or that within earshot. I really want to like this place. It's just one of those really dated, old-fashioned kind of places that feels a little cozy. I find it nice to stop by and have lunch in the winter time. The servers always do a great job. The food is just fine. My issue is with The host stand/greeters. There is always this old befuddled man there. I don't know if he owns the restaurant or what his role is. But he never seems to know what he's doing. He is always confused. And whenever I leave, he never says a word. I have never ever been greeted or thanked for coming into this restaurant. They just let people walk in and out And never say a word. Not sure how I feel about this place. The building looks amazing and big on the outside but inside was a little small and cramped I arrived at 5pm with a group of 4. There was a decent size group of people waiting but it was going quickly. And we were seated maybe 10 minutes later so it wasn't terrible. We arrived at our booth and it took a while for someone to stop by our booth. She took drink orders and then took forever to her to come back to get our food order. Not sure why there was a huge group of people waiting since there was a lot of open tables. Maybe they were understaffed? Maybe they will controling the crowd for the kitchen? Not sure but odd to see. The food was okay but it left a lot to be desired. It took forever for the food to be put in the system and it took a while for the food to arrive. When it came time to pay... it took forever to get the check. And it took forever to them to run the check. Again, maybe they were understaffed so I may have to give them a second chance. Started dinner with baked French onion soup- my favorite! So was so disappointed with how awful it was. Wanted to like it because I love this soup so much but all I could stomach was a few bites of the cheese. It tasted like someone poured a bottle of worcheshire sauce in it! Entree was shrimp linguine... had to spit it out! Horribly salty ... and I mean heavy, heavy salt like a whole shaker was added in. Had my friend try it and she too had to spit it out! Sent it back. Replaced that meal with a salmon salad. Salmon was super small but good. Stopped their because ... wait for it ... their Italian dressing was gross!
