Country Kitchen is a no-frills type place that serves up southern style food in an ambiance that is fitting for a restaurant that serves up southern comfort food. Our server was extremely friendly, helpful and had that southern server persona that only enhanced my overall experience. I went with the fried pork chop and for my sides, I went with turnip greens and rice with gravy. They also gave a choice between corn bread or garlic bread. Be warned the garlic bread is basically white bread, but it was still good and my pork chop and sides were very good. Also, the burgers looked good as they were coming out and the next time that I am here, I will probably try their cheeseburger. Country Kitchen keeps the menu simple, but that does not mean that the food is not very good. I will give here five stars and it definitely earned my recommendation. read more

A lot of folks had good things to say about Country Kitchen so we popped by for breakfast to see for ourselves. It's very big and open and has a lot of eclectic things on their walls, a very cozy atmosphere. I had their country fried steak bowl with a biscuit. The steak was sliced very thin and a bit dry, the gravy was great, wasn't too impressed with the biscuit. My husband had their spinach omelette with a side of pancake. He said it was ok, the potatoes were crunchy and lacked flavor. Simple . Simple. Simple. This place is just country. Everything you would expect from a country restaurant. There is some backwoods decor going on here with hub caps, license plates, and pictures of cows and John Wayne. It has a nice comfy feel and everyone is pretty nice and chatty. I had breakfast with country sausage. They actually whisked my eggs which is the only way to eat scrambled eggs in the south. The smoke sausage was a generous portion and cooked just right. I really didn't wait for my food and it came out steamy hot. I saw alot of other ppl plates going out with pot roast,country fried steak and I believe meatloaf. The green must be really good because they were out at 1pm. The price was too affordable. I had to look at my bill multiple times to make sure i had the correct ticket. My only knocks on the place is chairs up on tables while open. I think a host might be needed because a couple of times customers sat down and were not greeted or taken care of in order. A coworker and I have been to the Country Kitchen 3 times. We attempted two more visits but they were closed due to health and long vacations. On our most recent stop for lunch, as we have in the past, both ordered chicken fried steak, without looking at the menu. It's normally very good and worth coming back for. This time, we were served a dry piece of chicken fried chicken. My coworker flagged down the waitress hoping we could get what was ordered. She eventually came to our table and was very argumentative and rude. She tried to explain the difference between chicken fried steak which they call "country" fried steak. She brought the menu over to prove it and told us how many years she had worked there. Good for her! I know the difference and both are made with beef, cooked slightly different and served with a different style gravy. Regardless, neither is made with chicken. We ended up eating the chicken fried chicken, then got the check. Lo and behold! The ticket said, "Chicken fried chicken." After ordering and discussing (arguing) chicken fried steak with the waitress the bill was paid and we left. I still don't understand why she couldn't have said, "I'm sorry, I'll have them make a country fried steak for you. That's what we call it here. No problem." Very poor customer service. Unfortunately, we left with a bad taste in our mouths. And it wasn't from lunch. read more

I don't know why I keep forgetting about this place. It is a mile from home and next door to the Publix where I do most of my grocery shopping. For a nice balanced meal it is as good as going into town past I-10 to Cracker Barrel, Kasey's or any of my other favorites. Nothing fancy here, either in the decor or the food. Just a "blue collar" place to get fed and get on about your business. There are lots of tables and chairs to accommodate just about any size group and there are a few stools at a counter on one side. Breakfast has all the usual suspects: eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, toast and the like. No avocado toast here. The lunch options, which carry over to dinner, are stellar Southern choices. Vegans/vegetarians would be hard pressed to find much here as most of the veggies are going to be seasoned with smoked/cured pork or bacon and delicious for those of us who like our veggies cooked that way. For $7.79 you get 1 meat, 2 sides, bread and tea. The portions are generous and these days too much for me or my wife so the take home makes another meal. Today's open faced roast beef was tender and well flavored and there was lots of it. You get to choose if you want it on bread, mashed potatoes or rice. The Jambalaya was very flavorful for a diner version with shrimp, chicken and sausage. I did "kick it up a notch" with some added hot sauce. The turnip greens were fresh, not canned (I asked), and delicious after I doused them in my usual hot sauce and pepper vinegar. The zipper peas and big limas were good too. The corn bread muffins (we had the option of garlic bread) were sweet and enjoyable as well. There are also dinner specials that I noticed on a board on my way out. Didn't get a picture, but I did memorize Country fried steak on Monday, hamburger steak on Tuesday and Ribeye on Wednesday. Next time I'll get a picture so Thursday and Friday will be known. If you don't want any of the specials there is a menu to order from as well. Included in the sides are desert choices (including peach cobbler and banana pudding on the day we went) if you only need one veggie. The banana pudding tasted like my mama's which means they use a recipe similar to the one on the 'Nilla Wafer box. Maybe Nabisco was smart enough to publish an institutional version of that recipe. Service has always been very good and very friendly when we have gone. They will check on you regularly and will get you whatever you need. Definitely worth a visit. This is a classic Diner. They have excellent prices with a salt-of-the Earth clientele and staff. The entree of each meal is cooked fresh to order but the sides are showcased in a display that you can peruse before ordering. There is high-bar seating as well as table seating. Daily dinner specials make the price even better. The portions are your average homestyle full plate and maybe a bowl on the side as well. One problem with that display case is that it allows the sides to get cold pretty quickly when the weather is nippy outside. The front door is right in front of the case so the cold wind will just leach all the heat out. Not a problem in the summer but in winter, be prepared. The entrees and the soups are steamy hot, though. The flavor and variety of the foods offered are excellent. My son is a vegetarian and was able to find a full meal to suit his tastes. The style of food is your typical southern deep fried and covered in gravy but very well prepared. Service is excellent. The wait staff is perky and upbeat, not too chatty but very welcoming and accommodating. There is only one register and the lady running the till can be a little rushed, professional but not big on eye contact and extra words. She was nice but obviously quite busy. They lost a star because it is just not a candles and cloth napkins kind of place. Another star down because the dining room is less than comfortable. Still, I will definitely go back. Bottom line: If you seek out Diners (with a big "D") then you must come here once. It's a great experience on several levels. read on... I'm going with "5-stars in class" - This is absolutely an addition to my "awesome Tallahassee" list, or whatever I called it. This place is instantly inviting and friendly. The vibe once we entered was "hustle-bustle" with roughly 1/2 the tables occupied. (Thursday @ 10AM). There was no one seated at the bar, so we changed that. Greeted by a very friendly "Miss Margaret" who gave us breakfast menus and took our drink orders. My wife, an "unsweet tea" snob, took one sip and said it was good. (her "what's awesome" unsweet tea standards in TLH are Hopkins Eatery, Uptown Cafe). I went with water. The breakfast menu is substantial, and notably reasonable. I honed in on the ribeye with eggs special. Cooked precisely as requested (medium rare). Wife opted for a simple three-scrambled eggs which we discerned were scrambled to order (i.e., not sitting in a pan, waiting to be scooped out). What makes this place exceptional transcends the food. Taking a step back, one appreciates a pride in presentation throughout the restaurant. Walls appear freshly painted. The kitchen, largely visible from the dining area, has a place for everything. There are multiple "hands on deck" in the kitchen. The front-of-the-house also has a place for everything. The tables are all set up consistently. The clientele, I'm assuming, is largely "regulars". I got that impression anyway. There's a notable ease in the room that comes from established familiarity between the house and the patronage. That said, this group of regulars were quick to nod and greet as we entered. We never felt like we weren't "part of the club". On the contrary, club membership was granted once we walked in. Miss Margaret shared with me that today was the Country Kitchen's 24th Anniversary. Congratulations! She also shared with me that she had been here for 19 years. That sort of dedication is uncommon, and is a good sign of a healthy workplace that values the employees just as much as the customers. I got the impression she loved working here. In the kitchen, I understand "Miss Mamie" is the genius behind a lot of the food preparation. She's been there for a long time (19 years). There are daily specials - and there are features throughout the week. I understand liver & onions (a personal favorite) is on Tuesdays. The decor is what I would call "Diner", with various themes throughout. A strong patriotic theme prevails as well. Truly, there could not be a less convenient place for us to go to on a regular basis. It's 10 miles away from home. Heck, crossing I-10 on North Monroe is usually a dead give-away that we're leaving Tallahassee, so this is far for us. Nonetheless, we're committed to returning because of the overall experience. If your thing is to discover cool and lesser-known places in town - and certainly places that don't have much Yelp evidence (one of the previous reviews had a polar opposite experience which I don't understand) then you've got to check Country Kitchen out. 11/18 Update: We've downgraded our rating to 3 stars from 4. Since moving into their new location on Fred George, service has been moving steadily downhill. The food, when it finally arrives is still good, but you won't get it quickly and unless you're eating alone, all the food at the table isn't likely to come out at the same time. The wait between folks getting their orders can be substantial. Also, pricing seems to be at the whim of the server. The same meal we paid $19 and change for last week was over $21 today. No, the menu prices didn't change (although they did raise prices when they moved). This problem is exacerbated by their archaic order system which still uses those little green order slips. There is no itemization, so you can't see what you're being charged for. I had hoped they were going to put in a POS when they moved, but they didn't. Previously I mentioned that they were closed on Sunday. That has changed. They are now open on Sunday and closed on Monday. Finally, the food is still worth the 3 star rating, but don't go in looking to get in and out quickly or to be impressed by the service. Original review: We eat breakfast here at least once a week, so we're obviously satisfied with place. Pretty much anything you want for breakfast is available, unless you want something frou-frou They don't do frou-frou. Service is good and the servers are friendly. A couple of them have been with the place for 20 years or more. The fact that the restaurant has been around for over 25 years says something as well. If you're into a la carte ordering, this is the place. Their a la carte prices are very reasonable, unlike some places that really jack up the prices for individual items. Review is based on one visit. Passing through. My veggie omelet was just okay. The tomatoes looked like they had been roasted. The peppers and onions could have been cooked longer, but I find that to be common. I usually ask for them to be cooked longer, but didn't have the time to wait and besides, it was freezing in there. Wear a sweater. My eggs on my omelet and my hubby's omelet were over cooked in places, brown and a little crisp. There was too much Velveeta type cheese on both omelets. You'll be able to see this in my pics. The grits were very good, but, they spread out on the plate and cooled off quickly. Hash browns were just okay. Pancakes were kind of tough. No real butter, only a whipped spread. Staff was friendly and the place was pretty clean. If we were passing through again, probably would try a different restaurant. I was there last night at the new location ok here it goes.... Took way to long to get the food... The food was terrible I got the chicken n dumplings which were very runny and not hot fork hooked lima beans taste really green and had a fish taste to them and I got field peas they were not good either with garlic toast that was the best thing I had. My husband got the same and was not happy either. Seems like it was better at the old location which really isn't saying much. The new place is really nice though. The food here is good, but you'll get old waiting for service. We've been in 4 times in the last 5 weeks and wait times have been ridiculous. We walked in and sat down. Servers walked by us and never even acknowledged us. Others who had come in after us were asked about their drinks, while we tried to even get someone to come to our table. It's a though servers randomly wait on tables. On several occasions we waited extended times for the food to come out of the kitchen. We won't be back. read more

By far the best restaurant I have ever been to. The comfort you feel here is comparable to the comfort you feel when going to grandma's for Sunday dinner. The decor is cheery and makes you feel at home. The sodas from their drink fountain actually taste fresh and not funky from not being cleaned properly. The service is immaculate! I do not know her name, but a gorgeous dark skinned lady has waited on us both times we visited. She has the most beautiful singing voice. Her smile and personality always put my family and I at ease and in a better mood. Our drinks never dropped below half even on a busy night. It is clean and smells wonderful.
