While your food is tasty, it is cooked in an unclean, dirty environment. The service is poor with the lack of managment skills guiding the employees in the right direction. The people who work behind the counter have no clue how to properly interact with the people who are eating at their bakery. I will never be dining here again. read more

I ordered cupcakes for a baby shower and was so disappointed with how it all went. First, the bakers changed the order and did not deliver what we asked for. I confirmed on the phone and in person that a particular flavor was available (the favorite flavor of the guest of honor). Even after confirming it twice, apparently that flavor was not available on the day of the shower - which we ONLY found out when we went to pick up the cupcakes. We were not informed beforehand, despite the fact that they had our contact information and plenty of time to contact us. Second, the cupcakes were not nearly as good as the one I tried in the actual shop. Someone else at the shower told us that this was not the first time they'd had cupcakes from this bakery that weren't very good. Basically, if you are looking to order cupcakes for an event, go somewhere else. read more

I love there cupcakes and rolls. But we ordered a cake for 50 people. You never believe how it came on the big party. There was a cardboard top painted I was charged $40 for that. It was supposed to be fondue the cake was all frosted on top cracked and uneven. So embarrassed. They never called and said there was a problem. It's took almost 2 month to get some money back. I so much wanted to be able to give this a 5 star rating but the food just isn't there yet. They have so many other great things going for them that if they improve the food quality they will get there. I hope. First, the customer service is just awesome. They are so friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is warm and inviting and watching them parallel park the food truck into a tiny street space is pretty impressive. I went about 2:30 one Saturday to get lunch and they told me they didn't serve food after 2pm. Seeing how disappointed I was they gave me a voucher for a half price lunch sandwich and urged me to come back. Awesome. My son and I hit the bakery before seeing a movie on a Saturday. It was crowded and noisy but we were able to find a table with no problem. This place seems to be a kid magnet so if you can't tolerate kids running around all sugared up it is probably best to get your order to go. I ordered a tuna melt that came with homemade chips. I also got a chocolate chip cookie. The bread was good and it was nicely toasted and not greasy at all. The amount of tuna was tiny compared to the super thick slices of bread it was between. Since the cheese was thinly cut and the tuna was so sparse it was more like eating a bread sandwich. It would have been better with a little more tuna and half the amount of bread. The chips were unevenly cooked. Some were soggy and others were burned, but again they were not greasy. The cookie was a flat thin cookie that was crisp with a lot of chocolate. I prefer mine to be chewy on the inside, crispy on the outside and have an intermingling of chocolate, butter and vanilla flavors. I could only taste chocolate in this cookie. My son ordered the Hot Brown which came topped with arugula accompanied by a big pile of arugula dressed in a lemon vinaigrette. He said the sandwich was very good but it was arugula overkill with the salad. He thought the dressing was extremely acidic. We didn't complain but someone from the kitchen came out to see how he liked the sandwich, saying it was a new menu item. When he gave his feedback he as offered a different side or a cookie or a cupcake, which was very gracious. Their sandwiches are in the 10.00 range, which is pretty pricey for a sandwich and chips, especially in the suburbs, in my opinion. For that price I think they really need to raise the quality of their food to match their enthusiasm and top notch customer service. read more

I want tour like your place, the food is good, you're local and the mission is great. but, 45 min from ordering to getting food is unacceptable - especially with a 2 year old. The same excuses every time: were short staffed... We make our food from scratch. maybe you should hire more staff. Better yet, hire a manager who has experience and knows how to run a restaurant. The miracle bread is my favorite - it has a nice balance of crunchy large walnuts and cinnamon. The chocolate ganache donuts were good but my kids prefer the chocolate donuts from Weber's Bakery in Garfield Ridge. The place is bright and the service is friendly. Donuts prices are just a bit steep. I would definitely go back for the Miracle Bread and pistachio croissants. read more

Went here on Saturday with the BF after getting the plates on my new car!! (Super excited, first car I've bought!!) I've been wanting to go here since reading the other reviews of the ridiculously awesome sounding cupcake creations. We got three...because I was on a budget, and the BF may have made fun of me a little for wanting all the cupcakes. We tried the Dreamsicle, Peanut Butter & chocolate one, and the Chocolate Banana one. They were all fantastic. The Dreamsicle is my favorite, the frosting was soooo good. Both the peanut butter & banana one's were stuffed with their namesakes. Delicious. I'm so excited to go back and try more cupcakes...though I may have to limit myself to 3 at a time to avoid breaking the bank, lol. It's nice because 3 comes out at around 10-12 dollars, which is a perfect amount to spend on yummy cupcakes. read more

Ordered a dozen cupcakes for my wife's birthday and they really made it easy. I emailed and they replied back right away, were super friendly and very accommodating. When I went in to place the order, I also couldn't help but try one of their Bacon Cheddar Scones...I mean really, the thing was huge, extremely fresh and believe or not, pretty light and airy. Cupcakes were really interesting with some different flavors. I really wanted Carrot Cake as that was what our wedding cake was made out of but alas, wrong week for Carrot Cake. This place is fantastic. The decor is great, the staff is extremely friendly and the food is great! I had the country sandwich and the biscuit was perfect, bacon was delightful with a hint of maple, and the cheddar cheese complimented it perfectly! We had to get pastries to go because we were so full from the breakfast sandwiches! We got a dark chocolate cupcake, a vanilla fudge cupcake, a vanilla bean donut and a chocolate ganache donut. A-MAZ-ING! You can really tell they care about the product they put out there! The only thing I'm sad about is that I don't live in Chicago to go here more often!! So, leave earlier in the morning when you have to catch your train, and get breakfast here! read more

Today I decided to give this little bakery a try based on a review from a fellow yelper and the simple fact that it wasn't too far out of my way going home from work. The shop itself is small and simple, not really standing out amongst the other shops on the street. When you go inside you get a similar feeling as you did outside. In the counter are a few small display cases lined with whatever baked treats they have available. Unfortunately, I went late in day so I didn't get to see their full assortment. I ordered a blueberry muffin, a banana cream cupcake and a strawberry and banana cup. Basically the cupcakes were soft and sweet, loaded with little bits of their respective fruits. The frosting was a cream cheese based, a little sweet on its own, but would go excellent with a cup of tea or coffee. Actually the blueberry muffin was my favorite. A crunchy sweet crust over the top, a soft and moist muffin underneath and loaded with lots of plump blueberries. To me that was worth the side trip. Overall a nice little shop, well located next the train and in a fairly busy area (lots of foot traffic). Not exactly the cheapest bakery, but definitely worth checking. All this time I didn't know how great this place is! Sat outside for brunch with my hubby and was SO HAPPY. Smaller-sized portions and smaller-sized bills. The quiche was delicious and I was actually craving the caramelized onions for TWO DAYS. I've never ever craved a caramelized onion. I don't even like caramelized onions. But now that I know how good they can be, I'm making a date to return to Courageous ASAP. To add to this, the mother and daughter management team was sweet, neighborly and bubbly. The food was perfectly portioned and didn't stuff me. I am so glad I found a place that is "Elmhurst" to me. We'll be coming back here for a long, long time. My boyfriend and I both got the 5 for 10 yelp deal which got us a total of 6 cupcakes. We tried the: Sriracha Turtle, Cookies and Cream, Dark Chocolate, Strawberry, Pink Velvet, and Black and White. We got there at around 5:45 just before closing and surprisingly were welcomed with a pretty large selection. We didn't stay there to eat, however the bakery is laid out nicely and looks very cozy. My favorites are the pink velvet and the gluten free carrot cake. Last time I was there, we discovered they offered brunch on the weekends, and I had the breakfast burrito--soooo fresh and delicious. Bought on a weekday in the late afternoon. When I called to see what they had available, it was a decently long list. By the time I got there around 4:30pm, I was left with four options. Gluten Free, Vanilla Bean, Pink Velvet and Carrot Cake. All were great but I would have like more options. My own fault for getting there so late. What can I possibly say about this awesome bakery except that they are the BEST! The cupcakes and baked good are OUT OF THIS WORLD and their breakfast options are mouthwateringly delicious. The frosting on the cupcakes tastes like it is straight out of your grandma's kitchen and the flavors are always so unique and never disappoint! The vanilla frosting has real vanilla bean in it and they are my favorite because they taste like heaven. The carrot cake and apple pie flavors are also amazing, but truly I have never had a cupcake from here that wasn't delicious. Also, with their breakfast, get the warm homemade biscuits- they taste devine. Also, the service is always good and the refills on coffee keep us there for hours. This place is great. I had to jump off the train and found the area devoid of coffee shops. Not necessarily a bad thing but I was really dragging. I stopped in here and it's a lot more than cupcakes. Pretty solid bakery at reasonable prices. $1 coffee refill in their travel mug...$1.75 extra but you keep the mug. So for under $3 you get a coffee and a mug to keep. This was my first time visiting Courageous Bakery & Cafe and it was an excellent experience! We went in on a Saturday morning, typically a busy time to get breakfast, with a group of about 10 people. Despite being busy we were able to find tables to accommodate us all. We then proceeded to place our orders. The cashier was friendly, helpful and quick. With such a large group and normal patrons for a Saturday I thought perhaps we would have to wait a bit to obtain our food. I was wrong. Everyone at our table received their food in under 15 minutes. Now the food was not only delivered quickly, it was delicious! Our group order items ranging from oatmeal to pancakes and omelets. All of it was great! As we were celebrating a birthday we had the opportunity to try the cupcake and wow was it good. Laura, the owner, personally delivered it to the table. Not only that but she stayed to talk and make sure our experience was enjoyable despite being visibly busy. And enjoyable it was. I would recommend Courageous Bakery & Cafe to anyone, not just for the good service and quality food but also for the mission the Cafe stands for and the passion that comes forth from the employees. Whether it be the homemade cupcakes, donating part of the proceeds to fight cancer or simply making sure that the patrons are enjoying themselves this place is doing it right. We have been here for the weekend breakfast twice now and I have to say it is just great. The meal options are inexpensive but give a good amount if food for a good value. Their coffee tastes great, and everything we have had has been too notch. Also, it seems like if they have left over bakery items, they give them to customers, as we were given free churros. Also, after breakfast you can always pick up one of their cupcakes for later. What could be better? read more
