This might be my wife's and my favorite place in Elmhurst--period. The sweets (and we've sampled most of them) are delectable. The breakfast burrito is the best I've ever had (with clean flavors that don't get washed out with some sort of sauce). And the Lorraine sandwich is a great way to spend $6. (My wife prefers the chilaquiles, which I have to say, are fantastic--though definitely on the spicy side.) I love the fun atmosphere, the tables outside in warm weather, and the great selection of tea--courtesy of Serendipiteaz, as I recall. Courageous Bakery has amazing cupcakes and our wedding cake was absolutely delicious. They were generally easy to work with, though sometimes e-mail communication took a little while. I think they generally do a lot more cupcake cakes than actual cakes, but our cake was not complicated and it looked good. We love, love, love Courageous Bakery! They made our wedding cupcakes and did an incredible job. After trying several bakeries, we were so delighted to try cupcakes that didn't just look pretty -- but tasted amazing. We cannot recommend highly enough the Key Lime Pie, German Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Reece's Pieces cupcakes. I wish I could only take off half a star, because the only issue was sometimes we wouldn't get responses to emails for a week or so. I love Courageous Bakery! I stop when I can for a delicious pastry. My favorites include the pistachio and almond croissants and biscuits and jam. The cupcakes are delish. My personal favorite is the chocolate peanut buttercup. My daughter enjoys the everyday vanilla flavor. I also thoroughly support what the bakery stands for--the fight against cancer. I wish more businesses put forth profits to good causes. The downside to the bakery is how unprepared they seem some mornings. They open pretty early, but the shelves are quite empty for early morning customers. I have often peered in while going by, only to leave disappointed because only a few pastries are out. And cupcakes are almost never out in the early hour. Overall, a bakery worth trying out. I guess just get there later, which I can't often do. read more

Boy was I pleasantly surprised by this place! The food was delicious (I highly recommend adding the caramelized onions and portobello mushrooms to your omelet. Tasty!). And, despite being understaffed, the lovely counter woman Laura went out of her way to accommodate my crazy family's needs (I have a rambunctious 20 month old). I was not taken with the cupcake fad because fads tend to legitimize the mediocre. But these cakes are splendid in concept and in execution! I bought two to try and was so pleased by the homemade but sophisticated taste. They are beautiful as well. I came just for the breakfast dishes but now I am a bakery regular . I have been baking for 40 years and have made many wedding cakes( including my own) and I greatly appreciate a bakery that creates such fine products. I also think their breakfast items are wonderful and I appreciate that they serve such great coffee from a local roaster. I now buy my coffee from Fresh/Ground a good ethical coffee merchant. Tomorrow is my wedding day, I received a call at 6:30 pm today and was informed that they are unable to provide the cupcake flavors that I picked a month earlier from their list of June flavors. They said they were, however able to provide carrot cake as a substitution. Great, looks like carrot cake it is. I asked to have the owner/manager call me as she was unavailable. She was the person I spoke face to face with initially, it is 9:40 pm and I have yet to receive a call, I guess you get whatever they have on hand, so if regular cupcakes is what you're looking for go to Jewel, Mariano's or or Wal mart, their prices are better, not to mention their service. read more

I tried both the chocolate peanut butter cup and strawberry shortcake cupcakes. The peanut butter frosting was awesome-- sweet, but not cloying, and my teeth didn't hurt after it. Excellent find. Traveling home from Chicago weekend. Stayed in neighboring town. Decided not to eat the free hotel breakfast. Found this cafe on Yelp and gave it a try. Very nice place. You place your order at the counter with a group of very friendly staff members. They later deliver to your table. We sat outside on the sidewalk which had a pleasant view of the downtown and the train station. Coffee was excellent - your choice of light, medium or dark roast. Food was also excellent. My one son had the biscuits and gravy which he said was good. The younger son had funny face pancakes and bacon. I had the Choripapa (chorizo, potatoes, cheddar, red onion, poblano peppers, cherry tomatoes, cilantro, two fresh eggs, salsa verde) - fantastic. Looking forward to our next trip to Chicago. I would consider staying closer to this quaint little town - especially if I could walk to Courageous Bakery & Cafe. read more

This has been in my bookmarks for a long time but last weekend we decided to stop in and check it out. Well . . . good decision. We left with half a dozen cupcakes (20+ dollars but worth it). They were all SO good, we sliced them up and shared them all weekend. While we were there we noticed an extensive breakfast menu so on Monday we stopped in on our way to dropping our kids off at the airport. Another good decision. How on earth do they create such amazing, fresh, unique items in that little kitchen back there?? Wow . . . everything we had was fantastic. My husband had the pancakes and quite honestly, they were some of the best I'd ever tasted. I had the avocado toast with fruit . . . superb! I suggest you take a look at their menu online before going or you may be standing there for a long time trying to decide what to order! Such a great story behind this bakery. I have consistently been having the best service and amazing food. Although it is extremely family friendly (which I require with 4 children), I see many childless couples and meetings when I eat in. The pancakes literally melt in your mouth and the thick maple bacon is the best I have ever had. They make their strawberry jam homemade which I love to slather on their homemade multigrain bread and then sip on a perfectly brewed medium roast coffee out of a unique pottery mug... I could literally go on and on! Anna and Janike are the ones that take the orders and are super knowledgeable and always have a good recommendation for me depending on if I am on a protein, low cal/carb, or anything goes kick. Annalise helps serve the delicious food, grab any extras you may need, and jumps to help when my child spills water. Courageous: A+ on my entire experience with service and food. Unlike most reviews, my feelings about this place were flip flopped. The only reason I gave them extra stars was their customer service. They were quick, helpful in picking out cupcakes, and pleasant. The cupcakes on the other hand were not great. First off they were super cold as if they had been in the fridge or freezer. We let them warm up for a while, but they still fell very short. The cake itself was super dry and potentially a couple days old. The frosting was super dense and unpleasant. For spending $3.25 a cupcake I hoped for a lot more. Maybe their other goods are worth it, but I won't be buying cupcakes here again read more

Four visits and four home runs. Very fresh, delicious and novel. Most recently shared the Spicy Siracha Turtle Cupcake with a friend and it was amazing. The pumpkin bread pudding was truly exceptional. These are the kind of desserts that you may expect at a very fine restaurant or a very accomplished home cook. My husband and I went to this bakery yesterday with high hopes, as it is such a quaint looking spot. However, immediately upon approaching the counter our hopes were dashed. The girl working at the counter was extremely rude with a whole lot of attitude. First off, a coffee shop with no carpaccio? "No problem" I said. "Do you have tea?" She pints to the list. I ask if she has a regular tea. She points again and says we have the tea listed. So I pick one. She gives it to me so cold that the tea bag won't steep. I ask her to please warm it. She puts it in the microwave for 5 seconds and hands it back with eye rolls. I stuck my finger in it and it isn't even warm, I ask her if she could please microwave it for 1 minute. She glares at me like she is going to throw it in my face. Mi nicely tell her tea water should be boiled. Needless to say it was still so cold I just didn't bother drinking it. This was the worst customer service I have ever experienced! My husband and I were so disappointed and frankly by the time we left extremely pissed off. This young girl was beyond rude! Two customers were looking at the place as we left and we told them not to go in. This place will never make it with that kind of "help". read more

Very pleasant restaurant with a very nice owner/family member up front. Many nice customers. I am pleased with their purported charity donation, but there are some challenges. I waited nearly 30 minutes for a simple breakfast burrito. When it came I was, admittedly, surprised by its relatively small size for a $7 burrito. The ingredients were fresh, but not the most flavorful nor appropriately generous for a proper burrito. The greens used had a bitter aftertaste, and the chorizo was just ok. Their green salsa was flavorful and added a lot! Their coffee ($2.75) was excellent! I enjoyed it the most. A cute gesture was a gift of 4 or 5 donut holes. They were cute, but were not fried correctly. They were mushy, and had an unusual spice in them I couldn't quite place. Some free gifts are better left alone. To qualify my review, I used the $10 for $5 deal. At $5, my meal was reasonable. At $10, I would have been disappointed. Each item on the menu seemed overpriced. Perhaps it is really the diners who are donating to charity rather than the establishment. I will go back for coffee, but not breakfast. read more

I was wandering around OP and thought I would stop and and check out this new place.In the window it said OPEN and another sign said OPEN TUES-SUNDAY.Today is Wednesday,so I thought I was good.As I approached the open door, a woman blocked me from entering and said they were not open and to return tomorrow.Stunned,but willing to give her a chance for some reason,I asked if she had a take out menu.She barked back that they were being delivered today and again repeated to return tomorrow.Sure.Please learn some manners.This is not the way to treat new customers.You have lost me as a future customer as well as all the people I would have referred to you had I been given more polite treatment so I could return and try your food.Had it been good,I would have recommended you.It doesn't matter how great your food is if you do not know how to treat your customers.I am glad that you showed me who you are before spending any of my hard earned money. read more
